Drama viewership ratings for the week of January 22-28, 2024

Marry My Husband is plowing ahead towards some well-deserved double digits, which it’ll surely hit in the second half of its run. As for Love Song for Illusion, it’s set to whimper the rest of the way through.

Over in the weekend slots, Knight Flower sees more huge growth (YAY!) topping out at over 12% this week. Considering those numbers for Knight Flower, SBS’s Flex x Cop also had a strong premiere with a big jump for its second episode. Our other premiere of the weekend — JTBC’s Doctor Slump — did pretty well for itself, and Captivating the King also saw a big jump this week.

Well, FWIW (and that's not much), I agree with LYOL's Sunday ratings. That episode really kept my attention!!

0.3% is about right for Between Him and Her but @reply1988 and I are still watching--a few others too--and I think it's like a really slow weekender. It's going to take 16 weeks to show 16 episodes, so that's sort of like 32 tightly-written weekender episodes. It'll make a nice binge--you just have to ignore (so far) the lame, main couple. Everyone else is quite interesting.

That FxC beat out Slump in their premier weeks is gonna be a hot topic below, so 🍿.

Are those shows in some kind of competition? They are so different, and don’t even overlap completely.

Different as night and day, including the airing days.

These two shows aren't on the same page since one is on public channel and other's on cable. When FxC gets 1.5-2 times of DS's numbers, then we'll talk.

FxC is on SBS, not unusual if the rating is higher than JTBC, cause SBS is a free-to-air TV station whereas JTBC is a cable channel. I still think that the first two episodes are still too early to judge the performance of the ratings yet.

I agree a binge watch will be the best way to watch this and they should have done themselves, and us, a favour by realising it as one drop.

I’m still watching Between Him and Her! But it’s the summer holidays here so there has not been much time for dramas.

I’ve been watching Panda and Hedgehog recently and i think the problem is a lot more to do with the female lead being painfully stupid there 😅 maybe it is of its time; it’s slow going these days though, i can only take so much of her

2

Painfully stupid.

She wants to own a bakery but can't bake. Does she learn to bake? No she finds a man to do the baking.

She wants to drive a car but can't park. Does she learn to park? No she finds a man to do the parking.

This leads her to ask her actual nemesis to park her car for her and then she gets surprised when he steals her car.

I still remember her accepting money from the male lead and then getting outraged OUTRAGED at the suggestion that he may want something in return for it.

She was 😱🔪

2

@leetennant i can live with her wanting to employ someone to bake for her (but seriously, if you’re that incapable at everything, maybe time to rethink running your own business) but the car?! 🤯🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Isn't Flex Cop on public channel?

So happy for the big jump for Knight Flower and Captivating the King.

They really need to spread out the dramas better. Weekday looks so sparse in comparison. Since Marry My Husband is doing well. Its possible to get great ratings on M-T and W-Th too.

Agree. Weekends are packed. I am able to keep up now since it’s winter where I live and don’t have any plans for weekends. Come spring summer, it’s going to be impossible. Slump could have been a Wed-Thu drama.

It seems to me that in total the percentages watching are quite high. Perhaps lot more TV watching in winter in SK too?

Good numbers for Marry My Husband and Knight Flower. I am glad that two of my favorite dramas obtained high ratings. I am going to catch up with Sejak/Captivating the King now, since my friends are giving glowing reviews, after watching four episodes.

Yay!!!! Can't wait to catch up. I have an essay on Captivating the king too but it will have to wait, the load at work is brutal.

2

@minniegupta1 I have the WHOLE ESSAY on Captivating written in my head too, but it needs time to be written.

2

Looking forward to see some good numbers/ratings on Wed and Thurs as Queen of Divorce will premiere on 31 January.

Knight Flower is rolling!! loving the rating spike.
I expected Slump to start higher given the star power. Surprised Flex is doing better than Slump!
Should I check it out in the dark side??

My very subjective response is that I watched Flex and was more impressed than I expected to be. And I can't seem to muster the energy to start Slump. So do with that what you will 😉

I can see Dr Slump getting to 10 in no time great start and it can only get better.
Between him and her has done well not to fall off the chart with their ratings so low. If they manage to stay for the duration, I will be shocked.
I am really looking forward to something to fill the week days.

I feel bad for the folks involved with Between Him and Her because why is the show doing so bad? It can't feel nice to see numbers like these.

Brightside: they've likely already finished filming so morale won't be affected.

Regarding Love Song for Illusion, I was hoping it could at least stay in the 2% range. It seems the people who watch it and like it *reaaaally*" like it.

Hmmm... I'm still watching Love Song because it continues to be compelling enough. I think the problem is that the cast is green, which probably kept more than a few people from even trying it. The story is niche (fantasy supernatural sageuk), so the audience was already going to be smaller. And there's too much else to watch. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm watching it too. It's a bizarre show, but it's not that bad! I could do without the chaman, and some histrionic moments, but I'm enjoying the rest. Park Ji Hoon is a good actor. He can express a lot with his eyes.

I'm still watching it too and yeah, I think maybe less is more with the shaman.

The show is a weird mess but it's still addictive to me. I wonder where things will go and how it will go.

I am liking Park Ji Hoon's performance cause he does have a different vibe as both characters and I think it's cool. You're right about his eyes haha

Dang! This is impressive, given that there are so many competing channels now, and many people in the US at least don't watch shows on tv anymore but rather wait for a streaming service to pick it up. Does anyone know if all the drama access we have on Netflix, Prime, etc. is also available in the Korean region?

Making your question more specific I think that what you meant to ask is does anyone know if all the shows which can be accessed online outside of Korea are also available on streaming services in the Republic of Korea?

Required fields are marked *

Yes, this is my weekly question! I'm not clear on how these shows are broadcast in Korea and whether they can be watched at any time, as is possible internationally. Also, which broadcasters most people have access to. As far as I can tell, these ratings are based on the shows Koreans are watching "live" (first broadcast), which may be skewed based on the popularity of the broadcasting station itself.

Someone here told me long time back that these shows air on Korea's channel (public and/or cable) and are available on TVING (streaming) for SK and Netflix for international viewers when the airing ends.

That makes sense. TVing being like Hulu, for example.

4

Between Him and Her is being released on Netflix Korea at the same time as it’s broadcast so I can’t imagine that’s helping its ratings. I don’t know what kind of market penetration Netflix Korea has compared to other streamers/broadcasters though.

It sounds like the viewership numbers are becoming less and less meaningful? Behind the scenes, the producers are probably looking more at total views across platforms that don't share their information with the public (e.g., Netflix).

1

Actually, streaming numbers are important but are kept separately from broadcast numbers. The numbers here are just broadcast numbers.

1

@oldawyer, are streaming numbers made public?

2

Only one show in the Wednesday - Thursday slot (which was pre-empted on Thursday?)? The schedule is too lopsided.

Our weekender is doing better than it did before but is still underwhelming.

I love it when the ladies are doing well with drama ratings!
I'm not watching MMH, but it would be nice to see it break into 2 digits on the M/T slot. It's unfortunate to see this time slot in single digits. It's not what it used to be.
FLOWER THAT BLOOMS AT NIGHT continues to be fun, and general viewers are more likely to enjoy it with the not-so-heavy-handed widow theme.

AFC's upcoming match on Tuesday, January 30, will be South Korea vs Saudi Arabia. I'd expect those 2 dramas on the Tuesday slot to be preempted or decline in ratings.

Love Song for Illusion is bad in every way but in the chemistry between the leads. It works. Chemistry is such an incomprehensible and hard to define thing. They are angsty, sad but also playful and vulnerable with each other. Also, if they’re CGI-ing Park Jihoon’s tears, they’ve perfected it as it is the most realistic human tears I’ve seen in a while in KDs. Those sad eyes of Park Jihoon also do a lot of heavy lifting in this nonsensical story.
