Right??! And for such a deserving show in my opinion. It didn't break the limits of what a drama could be in any way.. it was just a really, really fun drama executed well. I still want my kiss for our OTP though.

It is the kiss, or rather the not-kiss, that has divided Beaniedom! It’s been fun to read the range of opinions.

And ofc, the ratings are well deserved. It’s really hard to pull off an action-comedy sageuk about an oppressed ninja widow that squeezed in a romance we all wanted more of. Who woulda thunk.

And that ending!!! I now have come to agree with the who Beanie mentioned it first that it was part of Jeong’s story and not the actual FK drama. I have to say, double bastards!

I read that and refused to believe it. 😅

3

I never needed or wanted a kiss between them.

Like there's some pairing that make you go "and now kiss"
Yeo Hwa and Soo Ho never had that energy (to me)
And a kiss isn't needed for a happy or romantic ending (to me).

I'm a firm believer that was a perfect ending for them.

Same. They work fine the way they are. They had enough chemistry to sell the romance.
I remember Bossam. They also didnt kiss. 😅

4

Oho I haven't read through many of the comments for Knight Flower, so I didn't know it was a bit of a debate hehe

I think I'd land on the side of "I wish I'd gotten a kiss". Their chemistry for me was incredible, and I just feel like especially the ML was so ardently crushing on her I wish I had the absolute knowledge that he'd been able to take that next step towards her instead of just feeling like it probably happened.

Knight Flower deserves a round of applause, confetti, AND a reward vacation because its 18.4% finale rating broke the record for MBC's highest-rated Friday-Saturday drama previously held by The Red Sleeve at 17.4%.

Well dang! Way to go Knight Flower! I also hope they get a reward vacation or something.

Also, way to go MBC. I feel like they don't get that "highest show ratings" unofficial award often enough. Maybe Sageuks are like their thing?

For public channels, it is usually SBS or KBS that dominates. MBC seldom gets the chance. But, ever since they embarked on the "rediscovery of saeguks" thanks to the phenomenal achievement of The Red Sleeve, the highest show ratings are no longer out of reach.

They haven't been doing well in the past few years, but MBC has a long history of dominating the ratings with their epic sageuks and Melo dramas since the 1990s. Returning to their roots was the best thing they've done.

With four successes (including the Red Sleeve from 2021), thanks to their saeguk forays, I am sure they will continue to produce more saeguks in years to come

4

I don't know much about South Korean channels but when the director of Knight Flower praised their open set I looked it up. They must be serious about their sageuks if they own a permanent set like that.

6

*open air set

2

@seyhan I didn't know they had an open air set either! That's cool. I hope they make a lot more Sageuks in years to come.

3

MBC and KBS have had their own sageuk sets for a long time. They'd reuse costumes and sets to save money.
MBC's "Dae Jang Geum"(2003) set has become a popular tourist attraction due to the show's global success. It's on my list of places to visit.

5

On a slightly related note, I read today in the Washington Post that Jumong (MBC 2006) is very popular with Taliban fighters who have moved into Kabul.

3

@bbstl,
I'm not surprised. MBC's JUMONG was very popular in Korea but overseas. I used to babysit for a couple from the Middle East, and they were big fans of the show. It was one of the first dramas that we were able to kind of live watch, like 2 days later. 😀 I can't believe how spoiled we are with same-day subs.

5

Kiara I've now looked up the MBC and added it to my list of Korean locations to visit hahaha thanks!

4

@cozybooks,
That's awesome! If you get there first, please take many pictures and share :).

2

Kiara, will do! Unfortunately I don't think it will fit into our plans this trip, but my husband and I will definitely be either going multiple times or making a life change longer term stay at some point, so I'll get to it. Someday. Hehe

0

@seyhan yeap. Thus, they take the pains of creating these sets and recycle them to save money and crime to create them. It is also profitable, as @kiara has kindly pointed out.

I really love this idea of preserving the set and costumes. 😍 It would be so exciting to visit. 😊

3

@Cera (@Seeker) Me too... Visiting them and being able to see them right in front of us would be a good experience.

3

^^ It would be awesome to recognize places where our beloved scenes from our dramas were filmed. I wonder if they do a virtual tour like they do with some art galleries.

5

And it's more of a "feel good" comedy. From what I understand, The Red Sleeve is very serious and dramatic with sad ending.

It's nice that something like Knight Flower shows it's possible to have a fun show, even with its drama, still be successful.

I wonder if the Knight Flower cast will get a reward vacation or something.

It has a social commentary to it, not just mere comedy. Not forgetting a brilliant cast, especially Honey Lee. The Red Sleeve held a special spot (no matter how serious and sad it is) in the Korean hearts, as it is related (well even if it mix fiction) to a real well-beloved Joseon King. It basically thank to this drama that MBC went on to create My Dearest and the Story of Park's Marriage. MBC does not have much success with its' modern-day dramas though...sadly.

@Cera (@ Seeker) It brought much-needed fame, ratings and success not just for the television station, but also to Lee Jun Ho (the least known 2PM member).

4

Not to be bitter, I'm still waiting for that someone's new show since The Red Sleeve (because KtL doesn't count) ^^

2

More Junho please. 👏

3
3

@ Healer 's, I am still patiently waiting for Jun Ho's superhero drama. Not a fan of KTL too.

2

^^ Well I thought Junho was already pretty well known. 😅 But yes his acting chops gained immense recognition. I never thought of it like that but I'm happy and grateful that The Red Sleeve was not only successful in its own right but in a way opened the door for so many noteworthy dramas.

Once can check a Bean's tag by right clicking on their display name and going to their fanwall. In the url address of the fanwall page, the last word is the tag. For example Healer's fanwall url is:

Thus her tag will be claire2009

@seeker Thank you for helping me again.

1

@peiyeelai No worries. Always happy to help. 🫰

1

Also don’t leave a gap between the @ and their name then as you type it should start to suggest some options. This is great if you have know the right tag and if the system is working well sometimes the wait for the suggestions/confirmation is just too long so I just chance and hope it has saved it as a tag when I gingerly press send.

4

@reply1988, this is a good tip. I have lots to learn about this tagging thing. It is helpful to me as I am from Malaysia and work/sleep/play with another time zone. So, this will help me communicate with you guys, @seeker too.

3

@peiyeelai I am still learning too and forget to proofread before pressing send so sorry for all the typos in my last response.

4

@peiyeelai @Reply1988 We are all learning. The best part about DB is that Beans comment / respond as and when they are online. It's not always possible that we are all online together but we all look forward to our notifications to reply. 😊♥️ Sometimes of course if we are online together its fun to "live chat" as well. 🥰

2

@reply1988
I just don't stress about it and don't judge when I see it in others. Proofreading is hard because I write on my crappy phone that has a 4×3 cmm box and I don't have autocorrect or spelling check because I write in my native language too and it gets annoying when I have it. Sometimes I loose my train of thought but get lazy or don't have enough time to correct myself. Oh well, it's just writing on a kdrama blog and not brain surgery. 🤣

3

@reply1988 I am okay with typos. Can understand when one types too fast on their phone, laptop or PC.

3

@peiyeelai
If you stick around you will understand why some are concerned about it. Few beanies are also writers, have their own blogs even. It is a pleasure to read them, one of the reasons I joined this blog, but also, as many that love their profession, they see it as high offence if the language is "butchered".

4

Maybe, it’s not so much you don’t like sageuks, but that you have a standard that most don’t live up to. MBC on the other hand, read your spec sheet and deliver to your requirements☺️

2

@reply1988 I like that - and it sounds about right haha I tend to like fusion over serious, but not too campy. It can be a hard balance to strike.

Congratulations to MBC’s KNIGHT FLOWER. Well Done! KF is my most enjoyed sageuk experience since tvN’s UNDER THE QUEEN’S UMBRELLA (2022) (Netflix). Honey Lee (my first HL drama) and Lee Jong-won were a great match and gave great performances. LJW aced his sageuk audition in spades. I hope to see more of both in the sageuk genre.

Btw, are ‘reward vacations’ still around? The last one I can recall was given to the cast and crew for an early favorite of mine SBS’s DEFENDANT (2017) (Viki US). Click here if you are interested on where they were sent:

O/T. Another young (ish) actor that gave a nice performance in his first sageuk was Kim Woo-seok (1994). As 2ML in another MBC sageuk THE FORBIDDEN MARRIAGE (2022-2023) (Viki US) he received some nice reviews. Lol, in the shipping department I was on team 2ML. KWS is off doing his military commitment but when he returns it would be nice to see him back in the sageuk genre also.
(Lee Jong-won has already completed his military service.)

Kiara, I was watching one of the vids with 이종원 which didn’t have subtitles and understood some of what he was saying in Korean. Two answers were delightful: (1) The explanation behind his name: Spread like the sound-waves when a bell is rung. He also said that his grandfather chose his name, and (2) The fact that he reverts to 사투리 when talking to his mum and dad!

LJW looks gorgeous in sageuk costumes. His facial features go so well with the hat and accessories. Usually I find Korean actors more handsome in modern outfits, but it's the other way around for LJW. Yesterday I randomly watched short clips of Hospital Playlist 2 to see Jung Kyungho and Kwak Sunyoung's moments, and realised LJW played a nurse in that show. I didn't notice him the first time I watched it.

I've decided to wait until all 12 episodes are out and then binge the remainder (I stopped last week). The one-episode-per-week schedule is a KILLER for me. Also, it's slow-paced and not much was happening in each episdode.

I don't think it would count as underrated/underappreciated because it's far from being a gem. I'm sorry to say this one has earned low ratings. I found it dull and depressing, and the sepia filter makes it gloomy-looking, too. I struggled through almost 6 episodes before dropping. The once/week schedule does it no favors but I tried waiting to watch 2 episodes at a time and that didn't help, either - for me, it's not just the schedule, it's the show. It might look different if you had the opportunity to binge or FF as needed. According to MDL, it has only two episodes to go (10 total).

I do wonder what this means for Donghae's acting career - he's had two shows in a row with ratings almost too low to measure. I don't wish him ill and like @britney, I feel sympathy for the cast and crew who work just as hard as they would on a successful show, but hard work alone doesn't entitle a show to viewers and ratings.

I would strongly suggest you to avoid GK War; if war, politics, back-stabbings are not your cup of tea. Romance virtually does not exist in this drama. Besides, it is a really HEAVY historical drama. It has 32 episodes, instead of the usual 12, 16, or 17 episodes.
