Our Queen of Tears gets a second chance romance in teaser

Okay, tvN really needs to stop taunting me and give me this drama already! The latest teaser for Queen of Tears starring Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day) and Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes) just dropped, and with the premiere just around the corner, they’ve spared no tears in their final bits of promo.

The teaser opens with flashbacks between our lovey-dovey leads, the rich heiress Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won) and the average Joe Shmoe Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun). When they first got married three years ago, they couldn’t get enough of each other, but now their marriage is what Hae-in describes as an AC you turn on during a summer night — something that never really gives you the temperature you want.

Now, when Hae-in so much as throws an icy look in his direction, Hyun-woo quakes in fear. On his end, love has been replaced with abject terror. While he might be able to unconvincingly choke out to her chaebol family that he’s *gulp* so happy, when we cut to his reality of screaming, crying, and slaving over dinners like an overworked daughter-in-law, we see that Hyun-woo, indeed, is not happy: “I chose to break my arm by getting married.”

But despite Hyun-woo’s view of his wife as an emotionless tyrant holding him hostage in a loveless marriage, when the teaser shifts to Hae-in’s perspective, she isn’t all what she seems on the surface. “The truth is,” she says while Hyun-woo pulls her out of the way of an oncoming bus, “I was scared.”

So perhaps hope isn’t all lost for our pair of opposites after all. We see Hyun-woo’s jealousy-dar enter the picture when a wealthy investor Park Sung-hoon (The Bequeathed) starts approaching Hae-in with a charming, yet calculating demeanor. And when someone in the voiceover asks our couple, “Weren’t you guys in love three years ago?” the reminder of their past seems to melt the ice between the two.

And slowly but surely, the two start to make steps toward each other again. A vulnerable Hae-in admits, “I just wanted to keep going home with you” while the two rekindle their relationship with quiet moments of romantic gestures: Hae-in leaning on Hyun-woo’s shoulder, him surprising her with a gift.

By the end of the teaser, they’re crying, I’m crying, everyone’s crying as the two run into an embrace that’s narrated by Hyun-woo, “I was confident that no matter what happened to Hae-in, we’d be okay. But now it’s not that easy.” Someone get these two a happy ending! And a box of tissues!

Written by Park Ji-eun (Crash Landing on You) and directed by duo Jang Young-woo (Bulgalsal – Immortal Souls) and Kim Hee-won (Soundtrack #2), Queen of Tears will premiere March 9 on tvN and will be streaming in select regions on Netflix.

What if the end is an amicable divorce?

One, where, I don't know, they agree to spend a few weeks of the year in Switzerland together?

Lol, I see what you did there. The writer has habit of separating her leads even if they are still together.

I think CLOY fans definitely got the short end of the… endings stick lol. The Producers and YFAS both had such lovely, thoughtful and perfect endings IMO. And I know most don’t associate LOTBS to PJE - but she also wrote a really sweet ending for that drama too! I’d say CLOY is the anomaly (and hope it remains that way lol)

You from another star was similar to Crash landing on you so isn’t The Producers the odd one out because they have a happy and physically together ending? I don’t know about any of the other endings to know if they are more conventional too.

Hmm, I didn’t realize there were issues with YFAS’s ending tbh. I’m sure most here have seen it but **SPOILER** alert just in case.

While Song-yi doesn’t know when Min-joon may be forced to leave, she specifically mentions that every time he comes back, he can stay longer on earth and that the last time he was able to stay for 2 years. So already, we know that in that very last scene, he’s staying for at least another 2 more. She also talks about how learning to value time with someone you love because it’s precious and can be taken away without warning. I think that’s such a beautiful and lovely message about the importance of living in the moment and being thankful for what we have. It’s as happy an ending as a story like YFAS could have without ruining the very essence and premise of the drama. At least to me anyway.

CLOY on the other hand - I dunno what the thought process was after making the drama all about the epic love story. It was probably the worse way it could’ve ended amongst probably multiple options. And don’t get me started or the second leads lol

@mandy I agree it’s a contrast to Crash landing for both couples. I also guess having a husband who disappears without warning, who knows how long for, with no way of contacting him whilst he is gone, is business as usual for K-drama land, even when the couple are on the same planet😬

@reply1988

LOL - I mean, that happening whilst being in the same planet just reeks bad relationship woes to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

I can justify it wholeheartedly in YFAS. But a regular couple going through that sounds like the *start* of a drama (we’d hope) lol

Jeeez - and I thought I was cynical! 😂😂😂

How can you be so good-looking when you cry? Ask Kim Soo-hyun.
I'm afraid I'm gonna fanboy for another 8 weeks.

Admittedly, this was the sort of teaser I’ve been waiting for from the day the first stills were out. But I can see why they’ve saved the best for last. Because my excitement just went up 20 notches up lol. This is gonna be so good. It HAS TO BE!

Now, can they please stop teasing us and release the drama already?!

P.s. Kim Soo Hyun is such a good hugger lol. That shot of him in tears holding onto KJW’s head is just *chef’s kiss*

I have no idea who the leads are (never appeared in anything I've watched). Call my cynical, but if this is a 16 ep drama and the teaser is for the 1st . . . what?. . . .6, maybe 7 episodes?

But. . .I smell chaebol/nefarious corporate shenanigans (a favorite of mine) so I'll tune in. Happy ending is a foregone conclusion - it's the journey that counts.

I was confused about whether it was a love marriage or a contract marriage so this trailer has made it much clearer.
Not many sleeps to go now yay!

Omgg so first off to the one writing theses episode descriptions on Dramabeans I AM A FAN!!! I am currently seeing Little Women but reading it here first just makes it more palatable so kudos to you for using such discerning words for the description that it makes me want to watch the drama!
Also people here saying they cannot wait to watch the drama, for me I cannot wait to read what you have to say and describe it for us!

PS : Kim Soo Hyun is a total package the man is an amazing kisser (cue his kiss in Its Okay To Not Be Okay), hugger, crier idk i guess he’s just a phenomenal actor and i hope a person too. Very excited for Queen of Tears 👀

I admit, what really got me is Kim Ji-won going 'so you can't sleep because of me??' it's the first time since 2013 that we're seeing her portray an ice-queen type of character and I shamelessly admit that I've watched that one fan-made edit using footage of her from Heirs with Kim Soo-hyun from YFAS, wayyyyy too many times in an attempt to scratch the itch until the QofT trailer came out.

Park Ji-eun is one of the best at writing female leads who are prickly, demanding and outwardly tough but peel away like onions to reveal multiple layers - she did it with YFAS, she did it in Producers with both female leads, she did it in CLOY and between her and Kim Ji-won, I have faith they'll make me love this particular prickly rich-girl lead too.

I mean, this drama already feels a little like I'm getting my 'what if Yoo Rachel was the main lead?' wish-fulfilment from 10 years ago lol.

Partially because of Netflix availability and partly because I haven’t joined the party on a DB ‘biggie’ in awhile and partly because I have seen only one Kim Soo-hyun project (the enjoyable action/heist film THE THIEVES (2012) (Viki US-free!!) I will be jumping on the bandwagon and watching tvN’s QUEEN OF TEARS. I have skipped the trailers and got the gist of what the drama will be supposedly about but will start with almost a clean slate.

PS. Something must be off. There are no ratings up there ⬆️ yet!

Ah! So the first person rated it at 1 and the second at 10 therefore we have a nice average of 5.5. 😂 Okay good going guys.

Apologies. I was messing around about pre airing ratings because I noticed another currently airing drama (with a certain fanhood) had received some 10 ratings before episode one aired.

Confession. My rap sheet is not totally clean in this area.
Only once (on a lark) did I give a rating before the airing of episode one and that was a 10 for Taec’s HEARTBEAT. I thought it would be great. It was most of the way until that horrid ending. My final rating was adjusted down to (a still generous) 8.

4

@marcusnyc20 😂 I was the one who noticed the 10 rating in the currently airing drama, then of course it got "adjusted". No worries, it's all good.
Heartbeat was really really good ... till it wasn't so there's that. 🤷‍♀️

2

I have seen the episode ratings during airing which goes up and down as is to be expected depending on the storyline which is a shame as impacts on the overall rating of the show.

Yes ... but pre-air ratings!! 🤷‍♀️

Haven’t been so excited for a drama in a long time. Kim Soo Hyun always deliver, so it’s going to be good. But what’s with the 1.0 rating before the drama even airs? Someone seems to be determined not to like this, lol.
