Kim Ji-won makes Kim Soo-hyun cry in Queen of Tears

What happens after the happily-ever-after, when a mere commoner marries into a chaebol family? Dramaland normally draws a curtain over this answer… until now. tvN’s upcoming rom-com Queen of Tears digs into exactly this question. Starring Kim Soo-hyun (One Ordinary Day) as our small-town hero, and Kim Ji-won (My Liberation Notes) as the chaebol “queen” he married, we see that it’s not all rainbows and sunshine after you say I do.

The drama’s latest teaser gives us more to chew on than the first, and in the opening sequences we see the ultra-romantic moments our OTP shared. Our heroine Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won) promises never to make Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun) cry, and in voiceover, innocent-hearted Hyun-woo tells us “it was the wedding of the century” because it was between the country’s most well-known chaebol daughter and a regular company employee.

Then the undercutting begins. Hyun-woo appears at Hae-in’s desk with a gorgeous bouquet of flowers. “It’s our wedding anniversary,” he says. And she replies, essentially, with a “yeah and?” The remaining half of the teaser is quick cuts of the two of them, but we get a glimpse of how Hyun-woo is struggling, and we hear his thoughts in voiceover, ending with a verbal request for a divorce.

It’s pretty new subject matter for a K-drama, which sets Queen of Tears apart already, but the high-buzz title has also garnered a ton of attention for the main cast pairing (for obvious reasons *heart eyes*). But even more so, the project marks writer Park Ji-eun’s (Crash Landing on You, You From Another Star) comeback, and boasts PDs Jang Young-woo (Bulgalsal – Immortal Souls) and Kim Hee-won (Soundtrack #2, Little Women) as well.

tvN’s Queen of Tears premieres on March 9 in the Saturday-Sunday slot following Captivating the King, and will stream in select regions on Netflix.

Ok, after the 2nd teaser I'm DEFINITELY IN. Hope I don't jinx it ( lately happening whenever I have high expectations).

I trust Park Ji-eun as Crash Landing on You and You From Another Star are still two of my favorites... but honestly, I'm not keen on married couples because I love romances for the falling in love stage.

Ditto...on both points. I'll be watching because of my trust in the writer...and that stellar cast. A win-win.

It’s all about priorities and impact🤣

I know I need to manage my expectations but I am counting the sleeps as I miss seeing him on screen. I couldn’t see his last drama and currently watching him in The Producers is getting me more excited about the suited and booted version we will see. I am loving PHS in casual wear on Dr Slump but KSH is next level in all outfits.

I watched the film Secretly greatly and saw him in his disguise then saw what he looked like when he was first found and had to do a double take😱🥰.Why waste half the film with him looking terrible.

^^ "acting" un-handome tut tut. But then K-movie leads are styled to be opposite of what they look like in K-dramas.

Omo, KSH with his hair up....still remember when eh came to the family portrait in "It's Okay TBO" with his hair up and his brother was irritated that KSH had used his styling products!

Oh my gosh the cut scenes of Kim Soo Hyun crying.. this show knows what to market lol. He's an actor who knows how to cry really well imo, and it looks like we'll get plenty of it haha

I'm a bit worried based on this teaser though that the wife will be totally unlikable. She's the FL, yes? If so, I hope they do a good job of making her well rounded with strengths and weaknesses instead of just insensitive, which is kinda how I felt she came off here.

Totally on the same boat re:opinions on the female lead. I don’t want another Moon-young - the fl here definitely comes across as mean spirited... It’s okay to be prickly, but I can’t root for someone who’s downright heartless lol.

But I do have lots of faith in PJE. Ye-jin and Cindy were both sort of mean initially but it was just surface level. So 🤞 she’ll have layers because KSH’s character already has the audience’s sympathy and we haven’t even seen a minute of the drama 😅

And so dare I say it was Cheon Song-Yi. Not mean per se, but not your classic lovable heroine at first.

Song-yi’s definitely not the classic, sweet heroine - she was hilariously clueless and ditzy right off the bat but… she wasn’t ever mean or insensitive. Yejin and Cindy and even Joon-mo definitely were lol. I’m not concerned because PJE is the writer. Anyone else and I’d be very worried 😅

Song-yi was my love at first sight FL. 🥰
TBH if I didn’t know she was the FL and hence would be redeemed I would have been worried.
Problem is KJW does unlikable rather well. 😅

I'm fully prepared for a bout of amnesia that makes the FL forget the actual circumstances of her marriage and probably her personality. Lo and behold, she's likeable again!

There would have been “some” love to start with. Didn’t seem like a contract marriage. I too hope they don’t make the FL too unlikable.

They look so good together until it all falls apart. They really should’ve just started with this teaser because it’s sooooo good! I see the chemistry and I love how new this subject is in kdramas. The realistic struggle after the honeymoon phase is super interesting to me. Plus I’m so here for the PJE-KSH combo because the previous dramas they’ve done together were epic.

Can’t. Wait.

It’s interesting that this drama is called Queen of Tears but the teasers are showing the story from the ML’s perspective. Kim Soo Hyun seems to be playing a comedic role in this one, can’t wait to see that.

I think he actually is!!!
I mean my username might be a giveaway but like I do notice he is super good in differentiating 'crying' in different context!! Like you see his crying in One Ordinary Day where he was accused of murder vs his crying losing his loves in many of his romance drama vs comedic crying in this trailer and producer.

This is biased but I don't know if anyone could top him lol

I do wonder if we’d ever get a drama where yes the Main leads are deemed OTP but in the end they don’t need up together and whoever was least appreciated gets their OTP from the supporting cast… anyway, that’s just me thinking out loud. Like this drama, it seems the FL won’t appreciate the ML as a husband and what if they do get divorced and he meets someone else and ends up with them, from the support cast?

2
reply

Required fields are marked *

When they did that with Strangers again they were both single when the drama ended. If one of the leads ends up in a serious relations then that was the OTP and the other lead was a cleverly disguised second lead.

On pulling back the curtain to happens after "happily ever after." I was reminded of "Encounter/The Boyfriend" with this topic, the romance of an employee and the CEO. Now we can see the rest of the story.

I'm expecting lots of flashbacks and backstory in this drama. And looking forward to KSH with his hair back, in suits.
