Wonderful World: Episodes 7-8

Following a case of mistaken identity, our heroine pieces together the misleading puzzle pieces to reveal a scheme that had been hiding in plain sight. She’s quick on the uptake, but our antihero has been arranging his chess pieces for years, and he’s a ruthless player.

EPISODES 7-8

Now that we’ve learned the truth about Seon-yul, the intricacies of his plan come to light, and it’s been a long time in the making. His stint volunteering at the prison had been a ploy to get information about Soo-hyun, which is how he found out about Hyung-ja and began preparing to assume Min-hyuk’s identity. In the present, he finally gives Hyung-ja’s notebook to Min-hyuk — who has a sprawling burn scar on his back. Incensed by the reminder of his past, Min-hyuk demands to know who Seon-yul is, and all Seon-yul says is that Min-hyuk’s like him.

Needless to say, the darkroom reveal had been a misdirect. When Seon-yul claimed the blackmailer was someone skilled with cameras, he’d really been talking about himself, having picked up those skills while working for Joon. Still, for all that he’s exploited Min-hyuk’s identity, he doesn’t simply leave him out to dry. Using his payment from Joon’s aide, Seon-yul pays off Min-hyuk’s hefty debts and even buys him a box of rice.

Wonderful World: Episodes 7-8

Having realized that the details of Seon-yul’s story don’t add up, Soo-hyun retraces her investigative steps, and they lead her to a very different conclusion. For one, the arson victim’s parents have been laid to rest at a columbarium, not the grave that Seon-yul had supposedly been paying respects to when they first met. Soo-hyun connects the dots quickly — we love a smart heroine — and confirms her theory with evidence that Soo-ho used to be in med school and keeps a photo of the accident victim in his locket necklace.

Soo-hyun asks Seon-yul to meet her at a cafe, where they talk in circles about the driver’s son, both acting unaware while clearly knowing Seon-yul’s true identity is no longer a secret. Resolutely meeting his gaze, Soo-hyun asserts that she can bear any torment as long as her family is kept out of the line of fire, but Seon-yul counters that the boy had his family destroyed. What once brought them together in empathy now drives them apart — neither can see past their own pain.

Now that she’s opened her eyes to the extent of Seon-yul’s scheming, Soo-hyun pulls herself together with a renewed resolve. Not only does she dedicate more effort towards showing up for her family, but she also continues forging ahead with her investigation into Seon-yul’s background.

Unexpectedly, she discovers a connection with Joon, whose foundation has been covering the hospital bills for Seon-yul’s mother. Then, as she returns home, she happens to witness Joon entering Hye-geum’s house. We see them embrace tenderly, only for the moment to turn sinister when Joon coldly tells Hye-geum to leave town temporarily with her son — he won’t hesitate to eliminate them if they get in his way.

In another series of coincidences, Soo-hyun finds out that Hye-geum had been overseas on the day of the affair photo. When confronted, Hye-geum admits the truth — Soo-ho had approached her to convince her into exposing Joon, since he’d found out she was laundering money for him through her art gallery. He’d promised to protect her from the inevitable fallout, and Hye-geum taking the blame for the affair had been his way of protecting Soo-hyun, too. Supposedly, Soo-hyun “must never find out who the other woman is.”

Wonderful World: Episodes 7-8

With his political goal inching ever closer to his reach, Joon has begun making more proactive moves, and one of them is offering Soo-ho a spot in his political party. As expected, our righteous journalist staunchly turns him down. On his way out, Soo-ho passes by Seon-yul, whom he recognizes as Joon’s lackey from the background check he previously did.

Having noticed Seon-yul in Soo-hyun’s vicinity, this immediately pings Soo-ho’s suspicion radar, and he looks into Soo-ho’s background with the help of a friend. When he discovers that Seon-yul is the driver’s son, he’s understandably alarmed, and he immediately rushes to the junkyard — where he finds the affair photos in Seon-yul’s truck.

Meanwhile, Seon-yul is setting his next attack in motion. He sends his friend to Soo-hyun’s house with a made-up accident, requesting Soo-hyun to check their car’s black box. It’s a deliberate ploy to lead Soo-hyun to a specific night, and Soo-hyun realizes this, having recognized the man from the junkyard. Despite her apprehension, she watches the footage, which had captured Soo-ho and Yoo-ri’s confrontation outside the house. Yoo-ri previously claimed that she’d been scolding Soo-ho on Soo-hyun’s behalf, but the recording of Soo-ho proves otherwise: “Shall I tell her that you’re the woman in the photo?”

Soo-hyun is left reeling, her worst fears confirmed. While her turmoil surges within, another upheaval is happening outside. Yoo-ri finds herself blindsided at her workplace by the sudden arrival of her abusive mother, who’d been estranged all this while until a certain someone sought her out. In the lobby, Seon-yul reclines with his earphones in, relishing in the chaos he’s engineered.

Wonderful World: Episodes 7-8

Whoa, Seon-yul is not holding back in the slightest. I really like how the drama has set up our leads as foils to each other, which was perfectly encapsulated by one scene in particular. When Soo-jin asked Seon-yul why he’s going to such lengths and taking a roundabout route in order to approach Soo-hyun, he’d replied that he needs to become someone precious to her in order to rip it all away. While Soo-hyun wanted to punish the perpetrator with the same crime he committed, Seon-yul wants to inflict the same pain he had to endure onto Soo-hyun. He’s calculating and methodical where Soo-hyun was emotional and impulsive, and he’s suppressed his emotions for so long that they’re now bubbling up in vindictive anger.

Given how Joon had extended a hand to Seon-yul after his father’s death, it does seem like Joon may possibly be Geon-woo’s true killer, manipulating Seon-yul’s father into being his scapegoat. For the sake of subverting predictability, though, I hope it doesn’t turn out that way. I’d like to see Seon-yul grapple with the implications of his father being a murderer, and the complexity of loving and mourning someone while also condemning their actions.

Amidst all the double-crossing and dredged-up secrets, Soo-hyun remains a compelling heroine, and I think a large part stems from her deep empathy. Despite all the revelations she’s had to contend with, she still made the effort to reach out to Min-hyuk. He may have railed at her, asking what an apology from Hyung-ja could possibly change, but Soo-hyun saw through his defensive anger and pointed out that Min-hyuk’s self-destructive tendencies ruin no one but himself.

Once again, Soo-hyun’s sincere words and her own painful past have resonated with another wounded soul. As for Seon-yul, it almost feels as if he’s doubling down on his long-held opinion of her character — an unremorseful murderer that destroyed his family — in order to avoid being swayed by the person she’s proving herself to be. His fury may be misplaced to some extent, but he’s clinging onto his vengeance as a way to cope with the way his family’s lives abruptly fell to ruin. That mindset, alongside the years of public disdain, has turned Seon-yul into a bitter shell of his former self, and all we can do is hope that Soo-hyun will be able to pull him back from the brink.

After 8 episodes, I'm still feeling we are at the beginning of the show...

The 3 characters are searching for truth and causing more difficulties to each other.

I don't specially feel empathy for Soo-hyun, she's quite inconsistent with her wish to help Min-Hyuk. She never showed any remorse for killing Kwon Ji-Woong but she thinks she's in a place where she can help him? Or when she thinks Seon-Yul can hurt her but not her family. She killed his father, she hurt his family and him.

It was interesting to see how Seon-Yul plotted everything and how he has the same baskets than Min-Hyuk :p

For the affair, again, if it happened after the accident, I have no issue with it. Yeah, she considered Yu-Ri as her sister but they're all adults.

The question is still if they had an affair before and if there is a connection with the son's death. We know how Kim Joon got the famous mysterious video, he knows the neighbor very well.

She got on my nerves in that scene, when she told him that a mom is capable of doing anything for her child and for protecting her family. But this included killing a man without giving any thought to his family and to his kid who had to grow up as the son of a murderer. So she had no right of being so haughty to him.

I feel both soohyun & seonyul are similar in so many ways. Kind, successful. When soohyun lost her son, all she wanted from the culprit was a sincere apology & admit he did wrong and when she didn't receive that, she killed him. Similarly, when seonyul lost his father & went to trial, all he really wanted from soohyun at that time was that she regrets killing his dad. The way he plays that part in loop proves that's what triggered him. He also went outside when they were taking soohyun to kind of confront. I also believe that he would have done the same to soohyun what soohyun did to his father if she wasn't sent to jail. To confront her, if she regrets and if she didn't thn boom. The only diff is that soohyun got her instant revenge whereas seonyul was burning in rage for years, going through the stigma of a father who killed a child in a car accident. He doesn't know how his father treated her when she begged for an apology from him. We saw that as an audience. All he saw was that in trial, his father admitted his mistake, apologized for his mistake in the court & was punished by the law.

But I am also wondering if seonyul knows something about Kim joon? Why was he hampering with the package that he delivered to that corrupted politician? And the way he said I will not leave anyone who hurt my parents had a similar vibe to what he asked soohyun - do you know what you did to me? I am not defending anyone here, but I am pin pointing the similarities & why they should heal each other & fight against the common enemy.

Cha Eunwoo and Kim Nam Joo nailed as Seonyul and Soohyun. Eunwoo's acting gives me goosebumps.

The Seonyul and Soohyun face-off scene give me chills. I definitely hope he is pulled back from the brink before he goes too far, but right now I'm enjoying my delicious villain Eunwoo meal!

Now that Seonyul's identity is revealed, I'm curious how this face off between Soohyun and Seonyul will end. Will Soohyun eventually apologize to Seonyul for killing Jiwoong? Will Seonyul stop? I'm quite sad for GoEun and TaeHo. Will it really become a wonderful world for the both of them?

If Soo-hyun apologizes to Seon-yul for killing his father, then this drama should never have happened. And it'll be one hella disappointment.

Cha Eun Woo can't help but improve his acting when his co-star is Kim Namjoo. And this drama showed me that he doesn't have good instincts about acting. Case in point: a scene at his comatose mother's bedside. He is smiling creepily like a deranged psychopath. Dude has no idea what he's supposed to be doing with his face in this scene. I just think at this point, he's been in enough dramas to know the basics. At this point, there is a growing line of actors who can do better than him, and he is in my opinion wasting valuable roles that could go to someone who can emote much better. I feel like every actor in this drama except for Kim Namjoo is expendable. The actors playing her mom and her sister too, they're all kinda bad especially when placed face to face in the same scene. Kim Namjoo is taking what could be just another mediocre forgettable makjang revenge story and giving it life, humanizing it. Everyone else is overacting (her mom & her sister) even Kim Kang Woo is guilty of theatrics. The only one that seems real and human is Kim Namjoo. She's the only one I trust in this group of actors, the only reason I'm watching. She makes you care about a premise and the characters around her that otherwise fall flat.

He deliberately did that expressions coz he wanted to show how far he has gone in his revenge. He was soft when he was looking at his mother but what happened to him and thinking that led to that expression. He in fact reshot that and director and he both agreed that expression nailed it. They actually wanted to show how far he has gone there. Your hatred towards him just make you guys blind to everything he does. He is doing his own stunts, he request for 2nd shot even when director says ok coz he wants to show his best and at the end, director ends up putting his final shot and agrees that his vision was better. Kim Namjoo has openly praised how well he acts and take advices and seek for advices

@shiny. Its jealousy. I've realized it's Jealousy that he is succeeding so well ,while their faves are not doing as well and are not as popular. They nitpick everything he does and "hatewatch" his dramas to find fault so they can spew hate. Ordinarily if you don't like an actor, after watching their dramas once or twice ,you watch something else ,you don't give a damn about their dramas or their life, you move on to something else. But this cew hate crew, they keep crying about how bad he is but keep watching his dramas. They only have negativity to spew.In scenes where he does well and people praise him, they ignore those scenes, then latch on to whatever scene they claim to hate. They will never give him credit for anything positive. Thousands of kdramas, different genres and tons of other actors, but it's the five lead roles he's done that has upended the kdrama market,it's the source of all their displeasure and is the reason why their "fantastic faves" are not cast as lead.
They are the all knowing experts despite never filming a 10 second clip. They know better than the director, producers, crew ,other actors and millions of CEW fans that enjoy watching him.Our positive opinions don't count, they want him to stop acting despite having millions of fans, him being a very bankable actor who has won numerous awards and no one forcing them to watch. Senseless talk.

If you cannot take a criticism directed at your favorite in good faith, that's on you. To go ahead and question the judgment of someone who does is arrogance, especially if the person gave a pointed example for doing so.

Kim Nam-joo openly praising how well he acts and takes advices and seeks for advice doesn't eliminate falling short in a scene. What it does is show his willingness to improve.
And, requesting for second shots even when the director says it is okay cause he wants to show is best is quite good. But if it is a constant thing, it is not good at all,nor is it attractive. Take it or leave it.

And, the vitriol you gave made me check through your profile and I saw you're a Cha Eun-woo apologist. So let me just end with this.

Cha Eun-woo is a good actor when he is not going against anybody. ML or SML, I've seen him do better when the writing does not pitch his character against the other lead. I've seen him flop times without counting when the writing does so. It's not only him, it is a trend I've noticed amongst actors of his age range. To give you a good idea of what I'm talking about, Cha Eun-woo became better in Island 1&2 when he stopped acting like the romantic second lead set to woo the FL. Watch the first 8 episodes and then the last 4 and you'll see the difference in his acting. The moment he stopped doing that in the last four episodes, his demeanor generally improved to a point where I had to acknowledge it.

Peace!

that's an interesting observation about Island you made! since I enjoyed the FL's acting in that drama, I think I will pick it up again where I dropped off before. it's true that actors praising each other is not a good indicator of how good their performance actually is. from my experience, it seems like the more actors talk about how good the drama is, how much they enjoyed the filming, or how wonderful their co-stars are, the worse the actual finished product is. good works speak for themselves, that is what I'm noticed ^^

I'm a Eunwoo fan and proud apologist,so it makes every bit of sense to defend him. What doesn't make sense and amounts to hate is criticizing him in every drama but then still watch his dramas......LoL....can't be me.Judging him harshly with a different standard compared to others by nitpicking every facial expression.Contrary to what self styled acting instinct experts say, acting isn't only about facial expressions and contorting your face(a different conversation for another day).At the end of the day,it should be how well did he play the role of Seonyul,a traumatized victim/villain? Did he embody the character? Not nitpicking every little facial expression and coming up with "he has no acting instinct",despite the fact that that the scene was okayed by directors, script writer.
Slyly trying to start a hate campaign that Cew should not be cast in dramas and leaving that comment on several SM sites. What is more hateful than that? Leaving such a comment despite the fact that he is loved by millions,is the most followed Kidol-actor on instagram, his name on a script is able to garner millions of dollars in funding and profit and his dramas are aired and re-aired on foreign TV networks. If he was a commercial failure,he wouldn't be cast as lead and he's not a commercial failure because millions of people enjoy watching him on screen and tune in. Arrogantly and hatefully wishing to deprive millions of his fans a dear source of entertainment, when she can just stop watching his dramas and hit the off button.Saying everybody else except KNJ are bad actors is honestly comedy gold."

I think in that scene he succeeded in conveying Kwon Seonyul's feelings perfectly, his gentle expression came out when he called his mother while holding deep anger over his mother's condition, the scene was executed superbly. Likewise with the other actors, they have done a great job. Every week I always look forward to the new episode.

It is a totally YOU problem .You obviously lack an understanding of the nuances of his character. His expression while holding his comatose mom perfectly portrayed the paradox of him being both a victim and a villain at the same time. It's exasperating when ignorance of a character is called "bad acting instinct" ...a non term. You are not an acting expert of any sort, especially when you spout off comments like you just did. It's ludicrous to pretend that you know the script better than the director, the script writer, the crew and all the actors. You've never set eyes on the script, never directed any drama so your hubris is simply unbelievable or is it hate for CEW that makes you so irrational?
1.You nitpick his facial expressions and come up with a scene he actually totally nailed to critic him.
2. There are thousands and thousands of kdramas.Cew has been lead in just 5, but somehow those five bother you so much....
3.Since you think other actors are much better, why on earth are you torturing yourself by watching his dramas? Did CEW force you to watch his dramas? Once again 5 out of thousands of dramas to chose from.
4. Directors and producers privately fund their dramas and decide to cast CEW,It's their money,it's their time, their energy, he is very bankable and they get their robust dividends ....Why are you so pained?
5. You go all over SM leaving negative comments ...that shows you have an agenda.
6.You come off as an irrational hater.Maybe spend your time promoting the actors you care about, not cew's fault they don't sell or better still,go source funds, write your script, cast your hearts desire, then produce a drama and lets see how great your good acting instincts are.

I understand it can be difficult to read a critique of an actor we love. But let’s focus the rebuttal on the specifics of the critique and not the beanie making it.

@db-staff I’m not sure if this thread violates the site policy against attacking other commentators, but it certainly feels against the spirit of Dramabeans.

I wish I could enjoy his acting as much as you do, every actor does need fans who support them unconditionally. Your comment was clearly upset but it wasn't hurtful, so I appreciate your restraint ^^ it's true that I am very critical of his acting in key scenes. as I said before in another comment somewhere, his acting here is watchable and bearable. but the bedside scene was not, in my opinion. I try to avoid his dramas but this happened to star Kim Nam Joo so I had to watch it. He is very pretty but in dramas being pretty is less important than pure acting chops. I guess my frustration is directed mostly at the casting director. There are lots of actors in his age range out there, but casting picked him. I am not very convinced that the decision was made based on acting ability alone. cheers ^^

Does anyone remember if Geun-woo's tablet was ever retrieved after his death? He ran away to record a message for his mom's birthday, and then he was hit, probably by Joon, who asked Seon-yul's father to take the blame. The tablet probably fell at the place of the accident, but would Joon have taken it? Did the kid manage to record something he wasn't supposed to on that tablet?

I think Joon most likely has the tablet, we still don't know what was on the video Joon showed Sun-Ho to stop him digging into the accident. We also don't know who left the door open for Geun-Woo to get out of the garden, as I have said before Sun-Ho was very nervous when Soo-Hyun unexpectedly came home. I suspect that he wasn't alone and whoever it was slipped out of the house undetected and forgot to close the door...Yu-Ri maybe?
