The new KBS weekender also starts off this weekend — but yeah, all eyes (literally and figuratively) are on Queen of Tears, which climbed up to 14.1% this week. Omona.

Wow, Queen of tears had a massive jump for Sunday’s episode.

If not for the schemes and chaebol family taking too much time, I would call it a masterpiece. The scenes focused on our leads are fascinating and I would replay them again and again. Then comes Eun-seong and his badies squad and annoy me. The Hong household except for the aunt are all stupid.

It reminds me of kkokdu and moon in the day which I both dropped because of too many unnecessary characters and bloated screen time.

I agree they have been well and truly pincer manoeuvred except for aunt. I called the take over by the dodgy crew of baddies. They seem to have some weak links on the surface but the level of corruption is sophisticated. That level of nurtured evil scheming from a young age is scary.

It's very unfortunate because in Crash Landing on You, every character was lovable -- Jeong-hyeok's ducklings, the village ajummas, Dan's mom and uncle, Se-ri's team manager and insurance agent. Whereas Queen of Tears has me rooting for the chaebol family's downfall and advocating for divorce.

the Queen of Tears chaebol family can be frustrating but I think the show does a good job of showing how complacent and easily-fooled they (minus certain specific members) are once someone has their trust+ how they've been set up for the long con, while also humanising them just a little.

As for the divorce..... I think week 2 made it really clear what their issue really is and, without getting into spoilers, how one-sided the view supporting it would be.

"showing how complacent and easily-fooled they (minus certain specific members) are once someone has their trust+ how they've been set up for the long con, while also humanising them just a little."

Gives me somewhat Parasite vibes without, of course, the humanizing part of the non-chaebols gang. But who knows, we might get that too for some of them.

3

@kodra

lol, no, this family is as stupid as it goes. Like. The pure definition of stupidness.

Parasite is somewhere on Mars as compared to QOT.

3

@bomibeans
🤣🤣
They are the stupidest out of the two but I don't see the difference between them as much as you. I mean, the Parasite ones had a "ghost" living in their basement for years without them knowing and they were pretty easy to infiltrate once someone got working in the house. This easy infiltration is what I find similar, there are so many that got inside just like in Parasite. The difference is that in QOT they are more evil and with a bigger plan.

2

It's reminding me why I fell in love with Kdramas (which makes sense, because Crash Landing on You was what made me love Kdramas in the first place)

it's got higher ratings than Crash Landing on You did at the same point i.e. ep 6.

I think it's safe to say it's a smash hit with potential for smashing even harder, it's on track to become yet another Park Ji-eun classic and Kim Soo-hyun's biggest hit since You From Another Star (and Kim Ji-won's biggest hit ever, I can't think of a more perfect female lead for this drama I'm a longtime fan and have the fangirly comments on Heirs recaps to prove it but she's especially mesmerising here and her chemistry with Kim Soo-hyun is off the charts)

Oh wow that is amazing. Will it hold Sunday’s numbers as it has been up and down between Saturday and Sunday. I wonder if people want to watch Saturday’s show at a later point so the live watch is down but the actual number watching is still high.

It’s actually just because Saturday has a more competitive line up. This week QOT competed against the final episode of FXC. Considering that, 11% was mighty impressive as FXC itself has done tremendously in ratings. I think they broke double digits back in ep 8.

From next week onwards, it will be very interesting to see just where Queen of Tears will land with no more FXC. Personally, I’m predicting huge things for this drama but we never know. Maybe Escape of the Seven will prove me wrong. The ratings game is always fascinating.

I have noticed with a few shows over the years that the second day’s ratings are higher. I often think where there is competition one show may get the live ratings but the actual numbers watching including the watch later crew may be better for the other show.

3

@reply1988 yes 100%. Actually tvN got some flack last week (when ep 3-4 of QOT were aired) because on Sunday, they canceled a variety show that airs right before QOT and used the time to air ep 1-3 of Tears. It wasn’t exactly reported much, but yea, def the reruns are a big part of ratings overall.

Saturday in general would be the biggest challenge for all dramas. But Friday and Sunday are generally “easier” (for the most part). WW is a good example of doing well on odd episodes instead of even.

5

I usually don’t like predicting ratings because it’s literally never guaranteed. But yea, QOT I have to say for now looks to be… guaranteed 😂

Definitely KJW’s biggest drama. Happy for her - she’s amazing. I hope also that this drama does wonders for Park Sung-hoon, Lee Joo-bin and Kwak Dong-yeo. Particularly the former two are so good when given some screen time. They jump between innocent and evil like no one’s business. Kwak Dong-yeon hasn’t been given much which is UGH, but lots of episodes remain. And given how it’s 1.5 hrs, technically, lots of screen time for him to shine too.

Park Sung-hoon plays convincing villains but I much prefer him in his work in KBS’s INTO THE RING (2020) (Viki US). I hope he doesn’t get typecast as a villain along the lines of Kim Seo-hyung (who I loved as a non-villain in the terrific SBS drama NOBODY KNOWS (2020) (Viki US).

Just about to start my tenth rewatch of the terrific SBS drama NOBODY KNOWS (2020). It's truly in a league of its own.

4

Tbh, almost everyone calls him Jeon Jae-joon in Naver TV lol. But he’s fantastic and I’m not too worried he’ll be typecasted. YFAS did wonders for Shin Sung-rok as a villain - and he did it again for Last Empress. I hope this can be a platform for Park Sung-hoon to take on different types of roles. He’s so talented - he’ll be okay.

4

@midnight, 10th rewatch! Wow!
I remember when NOBODY KNOWS (2020) came along with KSH as FL. I was hesitant at first because my only other KSH drama was MBC’s COME AND HUG ME (2018) (Viki US) (Note to Viki: Please include Kim Seo-hyung in the cast listing for COME AND HUG ME). KSH was so evil as a Reporter in CAHM that after it ended
she walked right into the Kdrama Hall of Fame of Villains (Reporter’s Division). I am glad I took the plunge because she was great in NK.

@mandy, I had to look up ‘Jeon Jae-joon’. I think because of the subject matter I passed on Netflix’s THE GLORY (2022/23) but I gather PSH was quite villainous in that drama.

2

I didn't know anything about her, didn't remember seeing her in anything prior. I only started Nobody Knows for Ryu Duk Hwan and I was blown away by everybody and everything.

3

@marcusnyc20

SPOILER ALERT for The Glory just in case!

He was the psycho villain in The Glory, yes. Not as smart as Eun-sung I feel, but def as evil based on what we’ve seen so far. And because the drama is very recent, that’s what most remember him by…

3

Kim Ji-won has been a real revelation to me. I have been watching her in this show and her performance is perfect.

Poor Wednesdays and Thursdays! They can't get any love!

And here are we ---alongside South Korea's TV watching community--- wandering the streets on those nights, aimlessly, wondering what to do with our time.

Soon, we'll start picking fights with passers-by or something without filmed mid-week pacification entertainment.

I've an idea. Bring What's Wrong with my Mother-in-Law to life for real. Ideally, actually starring Lee Jae-wook as twins...gotta be better than Impossible Heir, right? (Apologies to the IH fans!!)

I have to say, the 2nd female lead is the only likeable character (and frankly, actor) in this drama. But… I don’t think Impossible Heir is the answer to our second female lead search. It’s not the answer to anything that leads to the play button lol

3

P.s. also, yea even KSH was *technically* a “2nd lead” in Producers… that drama was a 4 lead drama to me. Cindy was 100% a main character. She was iconic - the character trajectory, the eventual resolution, the adorable love story, everything. Plus how insane would it be to think KSH is the youngest KBS Daesang winner for a 2nd lead role LOL.

“It can't be worse than Impossible Heir.”

Is there something that can?!? 😂

"Queen of Tears" deserves it. It's true that the so far, the secondary storylines don't come close to the brilliance that is the main, but this is still an exceptionally satisfying drama. Hope it keeps up.

Even though the culprit of the main murder was neither unexpected nor welcome, "Flex" ended well and deserved its numbers. I look forward to more, and hope we don't have to wait more than a few months.

And I'm loving "Hide." It's nothing original--in fact, all the tropes of the genre are on full display so far--I'm hooked.

I am fast forwarding through the baddies now as it just raises my blood pressure re the cheek and sense of entitlement of the ring leader. It was so frustrating how they were interplaying the two stories in little chunks in the first few minutes so it was harder to fully control when to stop fast forwarding.

I feel like the baddies provide a certain degree of friction and potential rallying point which I think is a good thing for a drama- especially since our leads have already sort-of twigged to two of them separately and along with leopard auntie (<3 her) are basically the family's Cassandra.

(Baek Hyun-woo and Hong Hae-in are nobody's fools even if she's, er, distracted by the obvious and he needs to watch his back)

7
reply

Required fields are marked *

I like to know their reasons for the inticate con. Is it really just for the money? Or they have revenge in mind? I do not like any of them. But the Hongs are not likeable either like her Mom and brother.
Hyun Woo and Hae In will def fight back. They just need to resolve their issues first.

I am watching the drama because of the baddies too. The baddies definitely keeps the story interesting, as it gives the story momentum and yes... avoid the slump of no story to tell. Actually, this is not the writer's first attempt at including villians in her story as You From Another Star, Legend of the Blue Sea, and Crash Landing On You do have them.

Exactly. And I’m guilty of enjoying the crap out of both YFAS and CLOY’s villain. Jae-kyung was particularly a menace but his hate chemistry with Min-joon was pretty epic. Every time he got thumped, I felt so much satisfaction over it. I’m sure it’ll be the same when Eun-sung gets played by Hyun-woo.

3

I'm enjoying the baddies too. It keeps the drama interesting. I am loving the main leads, but I think I would get bored if the story line only focused on them. I'm also a big fan of PSH, even when he plays the villian!

Queen of Tears is doing so well. The jump between Sat and Sun is huge. It also jumped from last Sunday’s numbers. No spoilers but the acting in the drama is just WOW. Everyone - including the villains at least to me - are really killing it. But particular shoutout to KSH for both ep 5 and 6’s ending scenes. All the tears he shed, then all the tears he held back. The contrast in how both scenes were acted out is just *chef’s kiss*. Serious welcome back to kdramaland!

I’m interested to see how Hide will do. I’ve seen the drama vids trending on Naver. How similar it is to WW will likely play a factor in the ratings considering they are directly against each other. Love love love LBY so I’ll give it a shot if it’s not too dreary.

FXC did so well overall but a bit disappointing to have not ended in double digits. But still, a successful run for them and a season 2 for fans. Not a bad place to end at all.

Kim Soo Hyun is just fabulous. From episode 1’s comic tragedy to episode 6’s genuine sincerity. The journey to get there, from how open Hyun Woo was (to us viewers) on how much he suffered, those drunk tears, those breakdowns in the nursery; to then not allowing a single tear to escape throughout episode 6 right till the very end. KSH has such RANGE. I started this show not thinking much of either leads characters. But here I am; unfortunately on another KSH high 😂 I always move on from him when he takes these loooong extended breaks from acting. Yet every time he has a new drama, he sucks me right back in like a Dyson. It’s uncanny. He just picks the best characters urgh!

yeah the week-by-week Sunday jumps for Queen of Tears are the real story here. Given Park Ji-eun's track record this drama came with massive expectations piled on everybody involved (her and both leads) and it's early days yet but..... it's on track to meet them.

also I'm astounded by the range of both Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won and how three-dimensional they make Hae-in and Hyun-woo feel, there's a finesse and subtlety to both the writing and acting for the characters that really needed these actors to put it across. I believe we're both veterans of the db Producers recaps, he was already excellent nine years ago but with QoT it feels like he's unlocking new levels of skill like a Pokemon.

They both have so much range and it’s that chemistry and synergy that really makes this drama come to life. Both leads feed off each other so well, it’s such a treat to watch. And omg yes! He was amazing as Seung-chan and to this date, that’s my fav performance of KSH. But most likely by the end of this drama, another Baek would’ve taken over lol.

Also, can I just say that we’ve all been gushing so much about the writer and all the actors but haven’t given both PDs their due? My gosh, the cinematography of this drama is unreal. The scenes in Germany, the long air shots, the camera work of blurring certain surroundings, the running/biking around scenes. It’s got to be one of the most beautifully shot dramas I’ve ever seen! I know they have the money, but we’ve seen how cash is not guarantee for beauty lol *cough*Arthdal*cough*

Producers will always have a place in my Top 5, if this was PJE's Marie Antoinette (i.e. the ahead-of-its-time work you make after having a great success and studios/networks willing to let you do what you want) I will always respect it. It threw the whole formula around romance and cast billing right out the window and I love that about it. But QOT and its classic kdrama charms have got me by the neck here, I love it and yeah it's going to be a Baek vs Baek fight here too for which Kim Soo-hyun role I enjoy more lol.

and aaaah don't get me started on the PDs! I was already a fan of Kim Hee-won after Vincenzo (the sheer flair of some of those shots and directing choices, not to mention the absolute bounty of classic film referencing Easter eggs lol) but she also worked on CLOY and both PDs here - her and Jang Young-woo - are amazing at establishing atmosphere, it's shot in a way that feels almost cinematic but without losing that 'classic kdrama' soul.

(and Arthdal lol they spent a lot of money to shoot only half a drama - damn Netflix - and to this day I'm still a bit annoyed that a year of Kim Ji-won and Song Joong-ki's time was wasted in roles they couldn't even complete, I was still hooked though)

Our new Weekender is off to a good start dramatically, but the ratings do not reflect that fact. Given how well some of the other weekend shows are doing this may not be a surprise. The child actors who are playing the younger versions of the ML and the FL have been doing a great job in any case.

QUEEN OF TEARS deserves the love that it is getting- it is really good even if it is not everyone's cup of tea.

But I do not understand why the ratings are not higher for WEDDING IMPOSSIBLE. This is an unusually good romcom and deserves more love.

I absolutely don’t get it either. Even the recapper here don’t particularly like it. This is seriously the best k-rom-com in years and here we are. That dialogue along would win Emmy if it were in a western show. But what can you do, sigh.

So so so sad for Wedding impossible. It should have gotten to at least 6%. There’s no other dramas to watch at that slot too, what are Koreans doing on a Monday/Tuesday night? This drama is so good! The acting is decent, chemistry perfect and it’s written so well. The build up of the tension was pretty epic, so I thought it would’ve done well last week since the leads finally got together. Maybe the lack of star power is doing them in.

QoT ratings is insane. It’s actually on par with Reborn Rich and for a rom com, that’s crazy.
