Drama viewership ratings for the week of April 15-21, 2024

This week, Chief Detective 1958 pounds through the gates landing over 10% with its premiere episode. The second episode saw a drop, but that’s likely due to the packed Saturday drama schedule.

Speaking of which, Queen of Tears has done it again, popping it up to 21.6% this week. We’ll see what the finale holds next weekend…

In other news, Lovely Runner saw a bit of a climb this week, but still deserves better numbers than this.

21.6% for QoT on Sunday night? This was so undeserved. It is basically a glossy soapy with a largely nonsensical storyline peaking in the last absurd ep. KSH is a witch for beguiling people with his constant crying. What a gig. That’s why he gets the big bucks!

Everyone already pointed out that QoT is like a compacted weekend drama, and I'm loving it tbh. Although it is super stressful to have this much hatred for a villain, still, it's a fun ride. Contrary to you, I wish they have more episodes :") but hopefully the drama duration makes up for it. As in weekend drama, I wish for a neat conclusion for all the characters and a decent amount of happy scenes post-villain era. I mean, they're already following the formula, they should've ended in the same way lol

Also I am more than happy to be beguiled more if it's by KSH and KJW acting haha

I wasn’t suggesting it hadn’t occurred to anyone before what was the nature of this drama. This is why I don’t come into the QoT recap threads to rain on your collective parade but chose here to express my view. This is neutral territory from my vantage point but not everyone agrees. So be it.

I also was not intending that it is a new fact, as I mentioned, everyone already pointed it out.

I am just voicing out my opinion here because it is related to how I feel about the drama's ending and its beguiling actors' performances, which (1) relate to your points and panshel's commments (2) hugely contribute to its rating esp in the latest episode ^^ I think it is safe to voice it here although it is a neutral territory, since its rating is highlighted in the above news

5

I respect your opinion and voiced mine. So all, good.
Just a further explanation, this being neutral territory, I held my tongue and didn’t unload initially. My initial comments were not hostile. Just sceptical/ critical. I reiterate that I didn’t go into the QoA threads and act like a troll to provoke others. I just expressed my views here as others did theirs.

2

"This is why I don’t come into the QoT recap threads to rain on your collective parade"

I tried raining on the parade at least once a recap but stopped around episode 8-9, because I was not getting any meaningful responses to my critiques. It's still cute reading faaaangirrrl comments, lol

2

They'll have two special episodes the week after the finale, so you'll get your wish. The Midnight Romance in Hagwon doesn't start until May 11th.

I heard that it just contains commentary of the drama instead of extra scenes, and that's kinda disappointing. I heard both ep 15 and 16 is gonna have extra 10 mins though, so that should help in giving enough time for everyone's happy conclusion and satisfying downfall of villains.

0

💯 agree. Perfectly expressed analysis of QoT. That "super stressful" bit is not helped by the actor playing it. Why can't Park Sung Hoon do a rom-com. We will make sure he gets enough "love". Apparently his (nonsensical) reason for doing villain roles is that he gets more love for being bad. Duh!?

Gawd...this drama makes me feel unintelligent. It's so dumb for want of a better word. I really hope it's just the KHS (and hopefully Kim Ji Won too) magic, otherwise it's making me anxious at the fear of a perpetual cycle of subpar storytelling, with writers emerging from their creative abyss to haunt us with more of the same for years to come.

The last 15 mins of EP14 was lacking a mandatory plot twist during an obvious roadblock for our ML. No wonder the real time ratings at the end was lower compared from last week because we know who showed up.

QOT is the drama that confused me the most about how I feel about it. On one hand, I love the OTP and am willing to watch them together for hours on repeat but the antagonist is getting on my nerves and it is getting hard to tolerate him. And this week, it felt writer-nim was trying to hype up the tension in any way even if it gets stressful for the audience to watch. Also, we are in ep 14, so why do I have to care if a certain character that I thought was single turns out to be married and has a son and both of them live abroad. What a waste of screen time.

6

I don't care about that character either, but they told us in ep 1 that she's a "goose mother" with a son studying abroad. Her husband potentially cheating on her is a definite waste of screen time, but because the episodes are so long, they're 90% filler anyway.

Don't get me started about the screen time 90 min per episode that can be squeezed into 60 or 70 decent ones. But what can we say?

Just like Byeon Woo Seok.

1

no matter how frustrating he is, I prefer this sociopathic plot device to the 'poor puppy second lead who's too perfect for the female lead to love' brand of second male lead, it works better in this story.

if anything he behaves exactly like a classic 00s 2nd female lead - you know, the type who doesn't seem to understand the word 'no' and acts like a jealous nut job to the female lead.

I must admit, I enjoy the various flavours of rejections we've got so far - "the sight of you makes me lose my appetite", "bitch, you thought?! I'd rather die of a brain tumour than accept anything from you" "I might have brain damage but you still don't stand a chance" and complete indifference to childhood sob story and ~fate.

While I hate the typical second male leads whose sole purpose is to support FL and get their heart broken at the end, 1D sosciopathic villains are more annoying. At least with psycho SLs it's a clear agreement for both parts (the show and viewers), that the guy is an annoyance. No one cares about them.

But when they're supposed to be good guys or wtv, the show tries too hard to convince us of loving the guy, when he's just equally annoying as the psycho SL. I still don't care about him. Just mind your business, man.

Others have already noted that Baek Mi-sun's husband and son have been mentioned occasionally in passing. QoT has sprinkled a number of cameos (the two guys spying on Hyun-woo in earlier episodes, "Vincenzo", Baek Hyun-tae's wife) throughout the episodes and I think it's likely that Baek Mi-sun's husband and son to show up at some point in the last 2 episodes.

Hitting the 20 percent mark for the Saturday episode even with the competition, I guess this was QoT's week to make a little point about its ratings.

I admit I find the last parts of episode 14 very, very frustrating but I've been watching dramas long enough to know that comeuppance is on its way in the next couple of episodes. so onward to the finale it is because this drama has me properly hooked to the live watch in a way no drama has managed since Vincenzo.

QUEEN OF TEARS has surpassed GOBLIN to be the second highest rating hit of all time for TVN. It truly deserves the love.

In many ways QOT is a compacted version of a Weekender but with higher production values which may explain why ratings have been relatively low for the new Weekender. But ratings did finally climb into Weekender territory for BEAUTY AND MR ROMANTIC this last weekend, which it should given that it is a much better crafted show than the last two which preceded it. One of the differences is economy of characters: Fewer side characters makes for a simpler plot set up. The use of excellent young actors for the three-episode story arc from our families' past that inaugurated this drama was a welcome innovation that has added considerable depth to the show.

Actually, I was inaccurate about ratings climbing for our weekender- they haven't really yet. This is what happens when you write before finishing your first cup of coffee. My apologies for not checking first- in fact they remain about where they have been. I am now not anticipating a ratings climb until QOT ends.

I agree about the weekender, BMR, and would like to add that the plot is moving quick as lightning! I'm still reallly liking it.

I'm not Korean so it is rather presumptuous of me to even try to analyze the Korean ratings for Queen of Tears.

But IF I was Korean, I think I would get a great deal of pleasure from watching cameos from a variety of old dramas; the reverse Cinderella story; the strong family dynamics - of both families, as they have grew stronger together. I've been struck by the many scenes of prayer in church - such a refreshing change from the comedic shamans and tragic destined souls that populate so many dramas. The easy-to-hate villains who are NOT part of either family. Heck, even the process of drying persimmons which perhaps has been shown in many dramas, but it was a first for me.

I'm fairly new to kdramas (2+ years) but I've become immersed in this drama like no other and I think there are many layers below the beautiful cinematography and drop-dead gorgeous couple that may resonate with viewers in South Korea which may help to explain the explosive ratings.

13

I've never seen those fancy persimmon-drying frames before- I've only seen them dried on string.. The plastic frames stand out a bit, If they were in other dramas you might not have noticed them on string in the background .
(I'm mostly new to K drama too, so cant tell you. But I know they were drying persimmons in The Makanai (j drama) )

5

Required fields are marked *

I agree. Besides the dried persimmons, I would add the references to meat and the makgeolli among others. The love and appreciation for village life because I am sure most have roots there. The scenery. And most importantly, the main story which is basically working the differences and the miscommunication in a marriage. Maybe the writers should take notice and make dramas that appeal to SK's way of life mostly because it is their values that they should care and not the globalism foreign ones.

I have said many times on various forums, from start to finish, kdramas are written by Koreans for a Korean audience and for the life of me, I don't know why non-Korean viewers get upset with the kdrama cliches, tropes, classic character personalities and other hallmarks of the quirkiness and appeal of the brand. I get upset with bad writing - such as missed opportunities, gaping big plot holes, circular/merry-go-round dialogue. But bad writing can be found anywhere - and Hollywood tops the list.

It is a complex question and it shouldn’t be regarded as a curiosity. We care mostly but not exclusively as a tribute to how good some of the acting is, how resonant some of the themes are about who we are as humans and how wonderful that we could engage - not because we want to objectify the actors - but because we as non-Koreans - understanding that we are not the audience that matters - still come together to talk, laugh, commiserate, learn a bit about another culture not from KDs but from credible sources and reaffirm our common humanity. This is why I care and why I’m here.

It is not that uncommon to see scenes of prayer in church in Kdramas. Roman Catholics (there is even a Korean Cardinal) and "Christians" (Protestants) are over 40% of the population, outnumbering actual Buddhists roughly two to one. K-dramas particularly love to show people inside Catholic churches (which are more colorful).

8

Required fields are marked *

I didn't mean to imply that the church scenes are unheard of and perhaps it is simply an indication of the type of dramas I watch, but church scenes are rare compared to shamans, destined souls, temples (Buddhist). But that was a bit of my point - Koreans are heavily Catholic/protestant and therefor the scenes in Queen of Tears may be very meaningful/appealing to a large swath of the Korean public and help some of the ratings.

Our planned trip to South Korea is beginning to take shape and visiting the Myeongdong Cathedral is scheduled - as is Daegwallyeong Pass 😊😊

2

Yes, I am jealous and do think of going there as well as Japan. China used to be tops on my list, but my interest has steadily waned to essentially zero.

1

Looks like I’m skipping this weeks QOT recap thread. I like staying in my happy bubble LOL. The thing is, while I liked seeing the Baekhong in their marital bliss, I think the snippets were good enough. I would have been pretty bored to see 3 hours of that and falling in love again thing for the finale. So amping up the drama and pumping some adrenaline is perfect for someone like me who really enjoys angst and fight against all odds type situations. It’ll make for a pretty epic reunion so I’m gung-ho about it all!

Anyway back to ratings - QOT achieved 20% on Saturday despite a new competitor that just achieved double digits the day previous. Well done! Can’t wait to see where we end up with next week.

Good to also see Lovely Runner doing better. It’s not gonna be a huge ratings hit but if they can somehow get to 5%, that would be quite something!

Two thoughts:
1. As a US viewer I wish MBC had done the right thing and licensed CHIEF DETECTIVE 1958 to Kocowa (which it is or was a co-owner) and then on to to Viki US rather than let the Disney+ death star suck it in. Apologies for the rant.
2. tvN’s QUEEN OF TEARS is obviously a 20 episode drama squeezed into 16. I have enjoyed it but may have enjoyed it better as a 16 episode drama with some judicious editing. It really was misnamed. KING OF TEARS might have been more accurate. This has been my first Kim Soo-hyun drama and there are 2 little things about his performance I have enjoyed. One, the tears, he is a master at that. Two, his drinking scenes are the only one I have been able to stomach in years.
