Speaking of Queen of Tears, this Kdrama also became the top-rated Kdrama of the week ending April 7, 2024 and weekender Beauty and Mr. Romantic became runnerup.

Is this a first? Where a weekender has lower ratings than a show? I don't believe I've seen that in my short time following the ratings. And is tvN paid but KBS not?

QoT at times feels like a high budget fast track weekender to me with its large family and focus on characters and relationships. There had been a focus on family this weekend so I am not surprised.

I mean, I am surprised but also not 😂😂

4

This has also been my impression, viewed from afar, @mayhemf (that QoT is structured like a weekender). The two previous 진짜-weekenders were so tedious and poor that QoT outstripping them doesn't surprise me either what with its star power.

And it's too bad--BMR is sweet and there are already more interesting story arcs happening than in all of LYOL.

Ah well--the weekender beanies will be over here in the corner, in it for the long-haul :)

7

Oh spot-on you and @attiton. I'm finally catching up to QoT, and I started by ffw'd all the side plots, but now I care about a few of them a fair bit. It really is a weekender in disguise, a really well done one.

But, yes, BMR has a long run ahead of it. If it's good, it has all the time to make up the numbers.

4

Spot on, @mayhemf! It follows the Weekender formula but has a high budget, fewer episodes, and many familiar talents.
I watched the pilot eps, then jumped to the latest two and felt like I didn't miss anything in between.
Korea will never get tired of their chaebol dramas.

4

You are exactly right: QoT is almost compressed version of a weekender.

4

QoT follows the successful formula of CLOY as a large ensemble piece built from the ML’s and FL’s contrasting worlds. The latest in-laws countryside sojourn reminds me the North Korean ducklings’ visit to South Korea, down to the T even in episode count. It’s indeed like a family weekender.

Nevertheless, you need to have both the budget and writing- as well as acting-craft to make it en engaging run to be a mega hit. Few dramas could achieve this though.

4

It is the first tvN entry to outrank a weekender since they changed their sched to Sat-Sun in 2017.

Not the first, but it’s one of those rare times where a weekday drama surpasses a weekender. KBS has been sleepwalking in this time slot for too long.

Required fields are marked *

Oops, I guess it wouldn't be a weekday drama but a regular weekend drama. LOL

3

Yes it’s the first time a tvN drama has overtaken a terrestrial weekend drama. Not even CLOY was able to do that. But to be fair, the current KBS weekenders are just not faring well. The last time a KBS weekend drama reached 30% was 2 years ago…

Given its middling finale, I think Wedding Impossible scraped by with a respectable 3.7%. And how could Wonderful World lose half its audience from Friday to Saturday. Maybe they were all watching QoT if they overlap on Saturday.

Oh my! QoT rating 😱. It even exceeded a weekender!!

WI ended with decent rating.

Happy for NU! I think this show picked up and ratings have marginally improved.

I am losing interest in Hide. Ratings are staying put.

Nothing Uncovered actually has quite the knetz following. It doesn’t translate too well on the ratings side but it’s literally the only other drama being talked about on the major Korean social media cafes.

Not the best metric to lock in the nod.
Baeksang is not a ratings based award ceremony (I've quite followed its trend) so...

I'm holding to that hope especially when we literally had Kim Hee-ae and Lee Sung-min winning their nods for the Top 2 cable dramas. And KSH has a decent track record at the Baeksangs anyway so one big🤞

3

It is based on the jury's decision. Otherwise, why Boyhood and YYS are nominated?

YSW convincingly played a high schooler as a 35 y/o, while YYS nailed his as a psychopath far from his usual roles. But again, never say never for the jury to suddenly sway into the popularity side.

1

@aunttim I know what you mean, and your examples are accurate but I also don’t think KSH necessarily needs the “help” per se lol. There are 6 more episodes left, and he’s been getting a lot of critical acclaim right from the get go. I’m pretty sure his best scenes are still to come so I’m sure he can win by merit.

3

I'm rooting for Ryu Seung-ryong to win Best Actor.

Ryu Seung-ryong or Namkoong Min for me. I have my gripes with MD, but Nam was just fantastic in this role.

4

@kiara I'm rooting for Ahn Eun-jin to win Best Actress, though I predict Ra Mi-ran will win.

4

Ra Mi-ran has the advantage for sure.

3

It looks like tvN has has gotten its goove back first Marry my husband now Queen of tears doing big numbers, i have yet to see the latter but i love Kim Ji-won, she is extremely underrated.

Hide's veiwership numbers have been quietly inching upwards despite very little promotion or hype, never underestimate the star power of Lee Bo-young.

Weekenders continue to struggle, i wonder if this is a case of changing veiwership patterns or just the fact that the last few weekenders have been mediocre and a far cry from the classics like "Once Again" and "Father is strange"

The last few weekenders were just plain bad, but weekenders in general are slowly starting to see decreasing viewership. 50 episodes is too much of one's time, so without much substance, fast paced storyline audiences' interest will wane.

My hypothesis is that it is the lack of writers capable of handling the multiple plotlines of a weekender. It has only been two years since YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN was posting ratings in the 30s- even the mid 30s for a few episodes. The writer of BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC is the same writer who gave us YOUNG LADY AND GENTLEMAN. So, we will see.

But the other factor is simply that more shows are now crowded onto the weekends. When one of those shows is as good as QUEEN OF TEARS (which is my favorite currently broadcasting show) even if it does not broadcast at the exact same time, it still has an impact as people have only so many hours in the day and have to choose when they will be watching and when they will do other things. But QoT's run will end soon and we will see what happens as it is unlikely that we will see another show that catches fire like that.

Yes agreed. There is too much of a crowd for weekend dramas irrespective on time slots. There’s only so much free time one has on the weekends so be sitting down and watching multiple dramas in different time slots. Particularly not when one drama’s run time including ads is almost 2 hours lol. QOT is a bit of an outlier but in general, even if it’s exact hour on the dot, I wish they’d just distribute it to the weekdays!

I keep harping on this, but if someone would just take the risk and put a high profile drama on a weekday, it can still reach the 15%+ mark if it’s good. For example KES’s new drama.

"The last few weekenders were just plain bad". Exactly.
I think I dropped the past 4 or 3 weekenders in just the first two or three weeks.

And there's too much to watch on the weekends these days. Practically all the shows are airing those days.

I feel like it's better to just watch the regular dramas during the weekend, and watch a daily drama during the week.
Maybe the times are changing.

Watching a daily drama during the mid week sounds good because no one airs anything during mid week, but daily dramas are on a crazier level than weekenders. The only fresh content with daily dramas is they give chances to newbies and unknown faces. Great way to start a acting career.

Not lately tho.

Be My Dream Family, The Smile in Your Eyes and Unpredictable Family were way more focused than any of the last few weekenders I tried to watch.

Weekenders these days don't feel like "family" dramas imo. There's just a bunch of annoying and frustrating characters in one show. But the daily dramas I just mentioned knew exactly what they were about.

Be My Dream Family was such a gem. Family goals, and top tier character development.
Unpredictable Family didn't stay behind either.
TSIYEyes wasn't all that, but the main family was adorable.

Except for It's Beautiful Now, I feel like the last few weekenders almost made me pull my hair out.
3 Dumb Siblings was the most painful weekender I've watched in my life (and I only watched half of it). People say TRHC was even worse...

Then yeah, daily shows are doing great. 😂

4

@enriquequierecagar That's great to hear because I dailies I randomly tried to watch were makjang. Maybe I'll check out the ones you have listed here.

1

I think I know what type of daily dramas you're talking about. Like the "food slap" type, or the "controversial birth secrets" type. Hahaha.

I would mainly recommend Be My Dream Family, since it was my healing show during the pandemic. That's probably the most relatable family drama I've watched ever.

I have a soft spot for Kim Ji-won. I loved her so much in "My Liberation Note," I'd love to see more of her in that kind of show—those without fanfare yet memorable.

The deterioration of weekend family drama is sad to see. The lack of good quality writing, annoying characters and yes....good actors (except the veterans) are turning me off to see...Putting Im Soo Hyang as a FL is not helping. Anyway, can the new one hit 20% soon....I don't think so especially QoT and newer dramas in April and May will make it harder.

They really shot themselves in the foot with TRHC and LYOL unfortunately. I'm quite intrigued by the weekender Iron Family, which will follow BMR in the fall. The lead actor will be Kim Jung Hyun, who, despite all the personal problems he's had, is really a terrific actor.

Queen of Tears is breaking boundaries already. 20% and over this week.

I'm glad Nothing Uncovered is gaining traction. I'm not watching Hide yet, but the recaps show this show has some very good substance going on.

QoT's weekender ratings are 🔥.

Wedding impossible ended well, initially I hoped for 5% but now I am glad it got to 3.7%

It would be great if Queen of tears got into the 20’s this weekend and stayed there for the duration. The golden era of dramas reaching high figures and staying there seems to be over but if any drama can do it this is the one.

I really hope QoT cracks the 20 percent and goes as high as it can, we're looking at a tv landscape where dramas themselves are thin on the ground (midweek slot gone entirely, only KBS even airs weekday dramas anymore) so hopefully this one living up to the expectations heaped on it helps at least some people keep faith in the format and in old-school kdramas (which is the heart of QoT, behind its gloss).

Tbh, I’m hoping that with QOT and King the Land being such big hits, it would propel some more old school kdramas. It’s so hard to find good rom coms these days. Either the genre is just not done anymore, or it’s done terribly. Before Netflix, this was what made kdramas popular in the first place. I wish the current type of genres can coexist with old school because frankly, if I wanted to see gory, revenge and time loops, I don’t need it to be a kdrama 🤷🏻‍♀️

As Blue Mayhem pointed out above QoT is very much like a high budget and compressed version of a Weekender which may explain why the ratings for the weekender are lower and QoT is higher. QUEEN OF TEARS deserves the love.

That being said BEAUTY AND MR. ROMANTIC is actually off to a very good start dramatically and the introductory episodes have built a solid basis for a fifty episode show.

6

QoT being like a compressed weekender and scoring ratings accordingly, makes sense since good weekenders generally are like the peak kdrama - you get romance, family entanglements, amusing and engaging supporting characters, the big emotional moments, all of it.

The only thing QoT has that's generally lacking in weekenders, is an identifiable villain that isn't just circumstance. I feel like 'sociopath 2nd lead' is an ingredient that's really meant for prime time, not the meandering 50-episoders.

Because it is not plain old romcom alone from the start to the end. The director and writer are renowned for mixing genres and do away with romcoms that has a boy-meets-girl-fall -in-love-then-no-more.

crack on, QoT! A drama with a pedigree like it has (writer's track record, cast track record, that budget) certainly came with a lot of expectations attached - not sure of the exact ratings mark at which tvN would have considered it a success but whatever it is has probably been comfortably cleared.

I mean, it's now one of tvN's top 2 dramas of all time and on track to overtake #1. I'm just glad to be along for the ride in real time like I was for You From Another Star ten years ago, QOT is the kind of quintessential kdrama that reminds me why I fell in love with kdramas - and we haven't had one of those in a while, forget one as perfectly done as this (high-budget and gorgeous, yes, but with a heart).

I started "Beauty and Mr. Romantic" this weekend and so far, so good. It's definitely better than the last two weekenders, so I'm hopeful it won't completely disintegrate or stall out around the 15 ep. mark. If it avoids those pitfalls, I think its ratings will go up once "QoT" wraps. The "Midnight" romance that's coming to take its spot will hopefully be amazing, too, but I doubt that it will be able to capture the same amount of viewers as "QoT," which is clearly a cultural phenomenon.

I’d like to see just how far QOT can reach. Disappointed at the timing of this drama. If only it aired a month earlier, it would’ve been in quite a lot of Baeksang major categories. Particularly Best Drama, Screenplay and PD. Very unfortunate.

There’s a decent buzz on Nothing Uncovered in Korea. Particularly the leads and Yeon Woo-jin who is always amazing. Too bad the ratings don’t reflect that, but at least it has good reviews!
