I don’t care about the ratings as such but I do wish the shows I like do decently well mainly because hopefully more shows like that are made, or the quality of the show is maintained and it does not suffer from episode cuts. I don’t care if they break any records or not.
Yes, that is were I see the importance of ratings because it can boost other projects by the same writer, directors, or actors.
But sometimes it seems as if people take it as a sporting event or as if a higher number is the only indicator of value.
Personally, I prefer dramas to have good ratings, I want the cast and crew to feel rewarded for their hardwork. No one wants to fail. I feel bad when I see dramas have super low ratings and hope the crew can still get paid for their work.
Ratings are one way to measure success. It doesn’t mean anything for us international viewers but it does mean a lot for the cast and crew of the drama. For fans, they want their favourite actors/actresses/writers/directors to get good ratings and positive reception. The fact is: ‘No one is never not happy when a drama they’re watching hit high ratings’. Usually the ones complaining or getting defensive about ratings are those who feels their drama deserves better.
Very true. It just feels like the discourse around the ratings can be a little negative or heated.
I like Park Min Young and haven’t really paid attention to the ratings on her last couple dramas, but I remember a couple people using the numbers to negate others positive comments on her.
Or some LMH fans taking the lower ratings very personally.
From my observation….it’s usually hallyu star fans or stars with big fandoms (not only LMH’s) that are more into the ratings ‘fight’. No one is complaining much when dramas like Munchies, When The Devil Calls Your Name, Born Again got super low ratings. But when a Hallyu star is involved it’s a different story all together. Interestingly, just like some comments for TKEM before, I have also seen a comment made by IOTNBO watcher calling others dumb because some ‘can’t get’ the drama and the ratings fell for ep 2. Wanting a drama to be successful is okay but the negativity is really uncalled for. Huhuhu
Some of my favorite dramas have had lousy ratings.
A couple I have mentioned before are I AM NOT A ROBOT and A POEM A DAY. I give credit to both dramas for maintaining high production standards notwithstanding the poor ratings.
Re INAR. In an interview after INAR aired Yoo Seung-ho said he was shocked at the poor ratings. He said at first he couldn’t look Director-nim in the eye.
In both cases I think the Writer and Director share the blame.
In both dramas the main characters were introduced so negatively In the first episodes that I think a lot if viewers were turned off and never returned.
Sorry for the mini rant.
Honestly, I sometimes think the viewer forgets there is supposed to be an arc in story telling. That the first eps are just the starting point.
Though, yes sometimes first eps can be an indicator if the show is to your taste.

I get that ratings are important, I do.
But am I the only one that doesn’t care if the show I like isnt #1 in the ratings? Or even top 3?

I never consider ratings when watching a drama. If I like a drama then I’m watching.

You’re not alone!! I don’t intentionally watch a show based on hype and ratings— I watch what I want to watch, and like what I like 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

@bcampbell1662 that is a good point I’d forgotten about. Unfortunately those of us outside S Korea have no say on the ratings. 🙁
