From ep11 to ep12’s ‘mistake’ TT__TT

We are now entering angst territory. But I feel like, with them, it’ll be alright. We will go back to ep11’s ‘mistake’ in no time.

But I sort of get this. It’s angsty, but I don’t feel like it’s stupid or insensible. That scene where Seongyeom’s dad came and ranted at Mijoo really got to me, as did the crying in front of her door in the hall. I don’t blame her for calling it quits. His dad has done this stuff to her already. With this recent escalation, and given his statute, I would honestly be afraid as well, not to mention humiliated and embarrassed.

And she was so clearly shaken by what happened. It was played so well. This was beyond the “nasty arrogant Assemblyman treats orphan like peasant” trope. He metaphorically shook her so hard that her teeth rattled. It was intense and visceral, and SSK played the interaction with him and her subsequent feeling so well and so realistically. It was hard to watch MJ and SG in the last scene, but this time, painful though it was, it made absolute sense and I felt sad but proud of her.

        Agree with everything you’ve said.

Mijoo has alluded on some occasions to her difficult early life. She talked about how she was mistreated. She talked about how she acted out (she “wasn’t a good kid”), how she tried really hard to blend in, etc. But this really was the first time it became clear how poorly she was treated growing up. No wonder she had such a difficult life and no wonder she thought of herself as a bad kid. Everybody else must’ve thought that about her, too! After all, she’s the orphaned girl who’s leading the good kids astray.

Against that backdrop, when she said to Seongyeom that she had worked hard and “lived well”, it felt like a punch in the gut, at least to me. I felt so bad for her in that moment. It’s such a simple phrase, but it’s her way of re-affirming her self-worth in the face of the difficult odds she has faced.

I felt really bad for poor baby Seongyeom — his dad is a total asswipe and it sucks that it’s affecting Seongyeom’s life — but I honestly understood Mijoo in this scene and I honestly felt the same emotion as you. Sadness mixed with pride.

Best moment was when she informed him that she would call the police. That like never happens in dramas, the victim usually just succumbs to the threat.

So proud of her when she said this.

yes!! I was so proud of her for holding her ground, for keeping her agency and essentially telling him that he’s way over the line! This was so much worse than the “throwing water” trope. He was all in his face, raging like a bull, *this* close to hitting her!!

Definitely. She also explained why she had do it. For herself, after being alone for almost half of your life, you gotta stand up for yourself. She had her reasons unlike any forced break up/noble idiocy trope we’ve seen on dramaland.

I was feeling uneasy since the start of the episode except in dan ah and young hwa scenes. I predicted antsy but not the ‘mistake’. But I was totally with mijoo there.

I actually don’t mind this angst. It’s not coming out of nowhere. It’s been an issue since the start, and I totally understand Mi-joo. I would have given up too. I hope this will lead to Seon-gyeom, his mom and sister all standing up to his father together.

It felt like she is at end of her ropes….Seongyeom’s dad refuses to acknowledge that his son has his own thought process and Mijoo isn’t a catalyst. He needs to deal with his father first. Mijoo deserves better and she has the right to be weary here. So far, she has fought back where she can…But I have faith that they can overcome this. They both are straight forward and non BS people. They are sincere and genuine to each other, it will come through by the end.

Interestingly though, we haven’t seen Seon-Gyeom stand up to his father on Mi-Joo’s behalf. Seon-Gyeom confronts his father about his life and Mi-Joo confronts his father for Seon-Gyeom. This probably adds to her uncertainty, especially given Seon-Gyeom’s history.

Mi Joo stands up where she sees its needed and appropriate by nature. Songyeom is growing on his own. They are separate but his father thinks it has a cause and effect relationship. And he had the gall to do that, after he shamelessly tried to pimp his daughter’s skinship to older men on the downlow. It made my skin crawl.

Father pimping out his daughter DEFINITELY needs to be addressed and condemned.

Agree. And Seongyeom is slowly standing up to his dad.

I agree with you and with all who have commented that we all know where this angst come from, and she clearly told him she needed time for herself, to think. What I liked the most is how SeonGyeom kept the distance, gave her space. He could have opened the gate and get into the house, he’s already lived there. But he called and called and asked her to get out to meet him. This guy know how to respect boundaries and he didn’t make a scene or told her “I will end this”. He was just there, listening and letting her know he understands why. And Mijoo finally explained to him how she felt and why. They were communicating and didn’t need any translation. It hurts, but it will pass, because each one is the strength of the other.

I agree, I really appreciated how he let her come to him, he respected the space she wanted, and also that he gave her his silence so that she could speak. You could see the pain, and the panic, on his face – but he didn’t make it about him, nor did he try to “hold on” to her. I also think that they can overcome this. I think MJ just needs to be good about what she needs to make it be okay for her, and so does SG when it comes to his family.

There were no shouting and I love that fact.

As Seon-Gyeom patiently waited and called out to Mi-Joo, I was impatienly staring at the gate, sending telepathic signals for him to just open it, like most other Kdrama ML would. I am now glad that he didn’t. Thanks for that insight.
