The three dramas in the gifs have my most favorite umbrella scenes.
Ummies are pretty ubiquitous in K-dramas and somewhere down the line they tend to get jumbled up – but I do remember the transparent one in I Am Robot and the yellow one in Business Proposal.
I can remember having seen a lot of those Bingo examples, but there are only a few where I also remember which drama it was.
ANd then I tried to put the card in an app so I could write in the slots and THAT would have taken me several hours. But if I just go with what I definitely remember seeing in some drama, I have at least two whole rows.
What is “TYU”?
That is an amazing article, they did such a great job!
My favorite umbrella is the one in She Was Pretty, it looks like a typical black umbrella outside but inside is a famous Impressionist painting (that I canโt remember).
I love the poems quoted in Goblin and Because This Is My First Life.

Those umbrellas are gifs beautiful!
I believe even before watching any K-dramas I had an introduction to the subject from Kotaro Lives Alone, where the serious little boy explained, that when a gentleman held an umbrella for a lady, his shoulder would be wet. The umbrella couldn’t cover both completely, and the wet shoulder showed that he prioritized her comfort over his; a gentleman.
In my bingo card, the slot about umbrellas says: “How do you know who loves whom? Umbrellas and Rain”. And that is true, but it is more than that.
I have noticed in the rare K-drama where the heroin is in no danger and doesn’t need saving, that the hero even before he knows he loves her, feels a sudden urge to “protect her”. It was easier notisable when it this urge was triggered by no danger at all.
In western tradition (I think) umbrellas are first and foremost a good excuse for a meet-cute and a chance to walk close together, and maybe to “have to” follow the loved one to wherever she was going.
But when first you think of umbrellas as protection, they also show when a lonely person knows how to take care of herself. Or someone overprotected that have fawning servants who run towards his car with several competing umbrellas. Or someone who is totally losing it โ just unhappily being drenched, alone, hardly noticing it.
Sometimes (in K-drama) they even make close-ups of bespoke shoulder. In Answer me/ Reply 1988, when Bo-ra sat crumpled in a corner in the street, crying, as I recall, in the rain, there was suddenly an umbrella and Sun-woo, of course, holding it for her.
They meticulously made sure audiences could see his shoulders – his broad shoulders – got to see how that Good Boy and Gentleman had his shoulder drenched for her sake.
I have made a “rain on my shoulder” dramazinho for you guys.
Nice article. They mentioned SITR. It was my gateway drama so the red umbrella scene is seared into my memory. I think another drama did a parody of it that was quite funny as well.

The scene with the yellow umbrella in Business Proposal was one of my first “umbrella scenes”. I barely knew that was a trope.
One of my favorite scenes is from The Best Hit (before what I call the โLa La Land sequenceโ).
And that scene in Go Back Couple (it’s in the article too): two couples, two umbrellas.

You are so right! I always say nothing goes unnoticed by our Beanies!! 🧐
It is a painting by Renoir called Dance in the Country.
They also have a jigsaw puzzle of the painting in the drama.

I think Be Melo had parodied the red umbrella scene from Something in the Rain.
