King of Masked Singer: Wow, Rock is in Every Emotion had a 9-consecutive win run – the second person to achieve this amazing feat in its history. I won’t give away her identity, but she is impressive!

Does anyone remember the name of the K-variety show that took place in a sauna the first half and then moved to a kitchen set up with celebrity recipes for the second half? Yoo Jae Suk hosted.

    Was it called Happy Together?

    6
    1

Yes! It was a fun show that introduced me to quirky and lovable aspects of Korean entertainment! They were big on featuring actors and singers.

      4
      1

I used to watch it when I was younger. I remember a good episode with Seo Woo (whatever happened to her?) and Suzy.

        2
        0

It was the really old format OG format of β€œHappy Together”

    3
    1

That’s what Ivwas wondering, I remember the more recent format, so this was old school. I liked it back then because that’s how I got to know a lot of Korean actor names and faces ! The recipes were just a fun side thing. What a weird format if you think about it, sauna/restaurant counter!

      4
      1

Yes!!! And I agreeβ€” lots of formats and games from Korean and Japanese game shows seem odd, but they seem to work!! I think that’s why Hollywood is now also remaking their own versions of many Japanese and Korean (game & talk) shows, more so the latter

        2
        1

Between Happy Together and another older but interesting show, Strong Heart, I learned much of what I know about who’s who in Korean acting and singing! It helped me connect the actors in K-dramas and learn about idol groups and their agencies and relationships!

          3
          2

I’d definitely say that as a viewer, a person will definitely get a more sincere and honest feel of who an artist is as a person in the older shows and formats. Nowadays, the veterans will still be the same honest selves, but the newer generation of artists are either showing a super vague and generic version of themselves or not themselves at all but a packaged version of themselves made by their agency. There’s pros and cons of both variants

            2
            0

Radio Star is another good show to get to know celebs. Of course you mentioned the agency control that exists, but sometimes there are comments that give a personal glimpse that are sweet and insightful. I noticed these days an actor or singer appears on several shows in a two or three week period as a comeback or promo. Recent celebs who have done this are Daniel Choi and Lee Joon (they even appeared on The Manager together for a swoon episode)!

I finished Queen of Tears in over 5 days, so glad I watched it. But I have some things to say – coming soon 😉

QoT: Can you really get hit by a car and have severe liver damage, and then get shot in the back and still be okay in the next episode? (After going to jail unjustly no less)! Makjang

Don’t get me started. This was the turning point of their love story for me. Everything from start to finish began to bore me out, and love declaration of theirs got the classic eye roll from me.

    2
    1

I guess it isn’t K-drama if there isn’t a lovers at the crosswalk car accident scene or a patient who rips out their IV and goes missing or a kidnapping that isn’t a reportable crime in and of of itself. But we get all three of those in the last couple episodes Plus more! Even an avid drama fan like myself can’t just say “OK I like it, continue with the story. “

Just another day in dramaland apparently. 🤷‍♀️

So, I’d have thought severe kidney damage from the blunt trauma of the collision… which, unfortunately doesn’t reverse to normal on its own accord.

But liver damage from a car accident? Making magic…

They seemed like a bigger menace during live watch. I found it difficult to relate to Beanies who felt sorry for Eun-seong (much like the ajhumma who wacked Park Sung-hoon) but I get it now. If you’ve read the recaps you’ll see how many of us want to see him as a ML in a rom-com but apparently he feels he gets more *love* for his villainous roles. 😂

    2
    1

To think that I first noticed him in Jealousy Incarnate as Go Kyung Pyo’s secretary, glasses and all, and thought him a cute ahjussi! I was shocked when I saw him a few years later in more prominent roles!

Stardom is a rare mix of fate and timing. Hard work aside there is no accounting for or fixed formula for “success”. Did you see him in Memorials (Into the Ring).

        3
        2

          True every single word👌

Yeah… I’m in the rare minority who didn’t like Memorials🙈 I pushed myself quite a few episodes in but had to give up.

          3
          8

I have to clarify that the directing and the style was what I didn’t like, not the story/characters/etc. I couldn’t focus on anything because of the directing.

            3
            0

Can I request you to elaborate on your comments about the directing. I must confess I’m not at the level of dissecting a drama technically. If it hits the emotional notes it’s a yay for me but if I don’t vibe with it, its bye-bye time.

I love reading the Beanies analysis of dramas and I learn so much and get a different perspective. It definitely increases my appreciation of the dramas.

Memorials has a very distinct directing style and camera work.

The angles of filming, the fish-eye style, the loooong silences, the loooong stares, very crowded sets (like too many chairs, too many tables, too many everything that nearly swallowed the actors), sometimes inaudible audio like a person might not hear some parts of a sentence in real life (but this is not real life, I need to know what the characters are talking about or how would I know what is going on?), etc

I think it is considered very artistic, and I apparently don’t do artistic well.

            3
            0

Tbh i can’t do artistic very either. That is why I can’t watch European cinema.

Okay thank you. You have beautifully analyzed and expressed what I found tricky but was unable to express it. The Matchmakers was brighter and perhaps more *cinematic* but I agree i need to know what our characters are thinking than just how they are looking or how creatively they are photographed.

            3
            0

European cinema. That is exactly how Memorials is like, and I didn’t put it in in my previous comment for fear of offending someone.

            That’s not artistic. That’s boring 😂

@minniegupta1 Well most Beanies love Memorials, so it’s definitely not boring. Just not my style.

He made a lasting impression in me as the timid yet argumentative secretary in Jealousy Incarnate – but I never expected back then what a desirable ML he would become one day.

The old school kkdramas like Coffee Prince, City Hunter, and Coffee House were good ones, but the endings were all vague. I think it was an acceptable style, but these days viewers and a much wider audience demand satisfaction, and not just a wrap up. So I’ll be viewing it with that in mind!

QoT is no comparison to the writer’s previous works like CLOY or My Love From The Star but it’s still very watchable and entertaining. The two leads would be sufficient reason to watch it. Ep 10 is great as pointed out by another Beanie.

And, we have rarely had big scale multi-plots/characters romance dramas these days.

    2

Well, I’m finishing up 9 right now and am prepared to stay up for ep 10 with such intriguing comments. The cast is amazing, and you’re right, I am up for big scale romance 😀

As for the underwater dream/timetravel trope, the only one I really loved was when IU jumped in the water to save a child and emerged in the bathing pool of 7or8 princes in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart

Really? A Kdrama remake or something else? Who will be the actors? I am so curious!

originally it is a chinese drama.. remade into Kdrama with IU.. and now thailand is making a version..

line up is most of biggest most good looking leading men of GMMTV.. and in general Thailand has been doing good remakes (startup where SL did not get sidelined by the FL .. lol, Gangam ID, Boys over flowers, etc)

I will keep an eye out for it, alasecond, thanks for the info!

btw they r also releasing a remake of a A love so beautiful (again Chinese, which is brilliant.. Korea did a remake as school 2020 or something with Yohan.. and now Thailand is doing it)
