Kim Hyun-joong cast in remake of Kimi wa petto

I say this without snarkiness (a quality I think is growing far too overrated these days anyway): One would have thought that idol singer Kim Hyun-joong’s stiff, uncomfortable acting debut in Boys Before Flowers earlier this year would have convinced people to STOP casting him in high-profile projects, but alas ’tis not the case. He has just been cast as the lead in the film adaptation of popular Japanese manhwa-turned-drama Kimi wa petto, or You’re My Pet. The j-dorama aired in 2003 on TBS.

Like Boys Before Flowers, the Japanese original starred the popular idol-actor Matsumoto Jun (opposite Koyuki). The romantic drama unfolds as a woman fashion-magazine editor who is perfect in looks and talents comes to live with a good-looking young man. She and the man, who is first taken in and affectionately called her “pet,” gradually fall in love. The female lead is still currently casting.

The contract has yet to be finalized, according to Kim’s management, but should be made official soon. The film will begin shooting as soon as the casting is complete, and aims for a release date next year.

(I really thought Kim Hyun-joong would go the way of Se7en, as in, he’d realize that he was sorely limited in the acting arena and focus on his music. Coupled with his seemingly indifferent attitude toward acting in the first place — he had to be persuaded to take the BBF role by management who were eager to heighten his name recognition — I figured he’d fade from acting, not be cast as the lead in another high-profile remake. Again, I mean this without sarcasm, but I sincerely hope he hies himself to some intensive acting training if he wants a career in the field.)

  1. no way ‘kimi wa petto’ SERIOUSLY?!?!

Matsu Jun was really cutesy and over-the-top adorable in this drama…. it was pretty enjoyable but not memorable IMO.

and I totally agree with you Javabeans… I don’t really see how KHJ’s going to pull off crazy cute for this drama but then again I’ve only seen him in BOF and not variety shows …. oy.

  2. I love this jdrama! I love this guy! I hope they’ll love each other because I don’t want to see both of them wasted.

  3. KHJ is waaaaaay too stiff for this role. he needs to act a cute, open, fun personality. that takes skill, which, sorry to say, he just doesn’t have. (in acting.)

  4. Who thought this was a good idea? I mean, really? I literally howled “NO!” when I read this. I might watch at least one episode of this for the train wreck potential that this has, but seriously? This guy?

I really enjoyed the j-drama. MatsuJun may not be the best actor but I liked him in the role.

  5. If they were going for the BOF actor, then they should have chosen Kim Joon. But even then…bleh. There’s plenty of other Korean actors who can be bubbly cute on command, so why the need of an idol “actor” ?

  6. NOO! kimi wa petto holds a very dear spot in my heart! im sure KHJ is a nice person, but i dnt think hell be able to view the warm, quirky, lovable shoes of MJ

    :(

  7. I could see Jang Geun Suk in this role and I’m not just saying that because I’m on a You’re Beautiful high. He has the acting range to do the job and he has the affinity for weird/off-beat roles.

  8. NOOOOOOOOOOOOO….
    what is this??
    seriously??
I don’t think he can do it, sorry with a lot of 55501 activities, it’s hard for him to study acting
    psh!!!!
because I’m all in You’re beautiful, Jang Geun Seuk maybe the right choice
    kekekeke

  9. Well, here is more proof that the beautiful do rule the world.

On the other hand, even though Kim Hyun-Joong is acting-challenged, he is infinitely beautiful, and I was perfectly happy just looking at him during his many (undeserved) minutes onscreen during BBF.

Hopefully some intense coaching will bring out that charismatic, impish, mischievous, and very intelligent young man that comes out when he is on variety shows and interviews. One hopes…

I am, though, still amazed that he will be leading a drama!

  10. OMG. DNW.

there is NO WAY he would do a good job acting as momo. seriously, i REALLY loved kimi wa petto to bits and i think matsumoto jun did a really good job at it, but lo and behold! they cast kim hyun joong to bastardize the drama. casting directors, if you’re going to cast someone as momo, cast someone who can act all bubbly and bratty and whatevs. this is just wrong.

  11. Kim Hyun Joong, please stick to your regular job. I love you, but just not your acting.

  12. I LOVE YOU HYUN JOONG OPPA!

I’m looking forward to his performance, who knows what the future may bring!

  13. Hoooolayyyy-moley. Okay, “warm”, “quirkly”, “bubbly”, “cutesy”, “over-the-top adorable” – these are the adjectives the first 7 commenters used to describe the role.

Does any of these adjectives conjure up in my mind KHJ? Uhm, hell no. I think “perfect”, “handsome”, “chiseled from Greek marble”, “OMG, he’s so good-looking”, etc.

This is going to be hilarious, guys. I totally would give KHJ a chance were he cast in the remake of ISWAK (as Joe’s character), not that he is the best choice, but the cold, aloof role he can probably do okay. Cute and bubbly? Hee, I’m totally on board to watch and maybe snark, and coo over his handsomeness as well, of course.

  14. I agree with #7… as much as I love Hyun-Joong, I am sorely disappointed in his acting, and the casting. I too would appreciate and look forward to Kimi Wa Petto if Jang Geun Seuk were cast. Anyhow, hopefully with the experience of BBF behind him Hyun-Joong will improve greatly.

  15. I agree with most of the comments here…but then again, maybe KHJ could pull it off because of his ‘4Dness’ in real life…maybe he was just miscasted in BOF…

I would prefer LeeHongKi for this role! he can totally pull an cutesy role..hehe

Just being optimistic that’s all :D

  16. Kimi wa Petto is my favorite jdrama.
MatsuJun seems a tough act to follow with him jumping all over her when she comes in the door squealing “Sumire-chan”! He did seem like a wonderful pet.

I think Lee Min-ki would have been wonderful.

  17. I can kinda see KHJ acting quirky and off-beat due to We Got Married. Now, if only they’d pair him with hwang-bo.. I’d be in heaven!!! =)

Jun-chan was adorable in the series.. and I actually enjoyed it(except for the ending)… Actually, the whole role is to be as “cute” and “pretty-boy”as possible.. and I think KHJ can pull it off as it doesn’t require THAT much acting.. I mean come on if Hong Ki whose acting is questionable can pull it off in YB why not this idol-star who has questionable talent as well!!! ^_^

  18. Oh my god! I can’t believe this.

“Kimi wa petto” is my forever top favourite manga. How could they do this?
I love the manga so much that I would surely hate HJ for taking the lead role. (He is not my favourite actor but I’ve never hated him.)
And he is too tall for the role. Momo gave up his dream of ballet and went for modern dance because of his height. There’s no way that HJ would fix in this descripsion.

…why can’t they cast Heechul for this role… Please ignore this, it’s just a fangirl thing.

  19. Dang his acting sucks……. Though he’s pretty cute.

  20. seriously kim hyun joong?!?! are you kidding me?! WTF….
i thought his acting was absolutely the WORST in BBF….now they are going to cast him as lead in another drama? what were they thinking?! the only expression khj can do is the “confused blank stare.” I don’t think he has enough range in order to pull off matsujun’s momo role honestly >.< i don't want to sound like a hater but ANYONE acts better than hyun joong…even yunho! (and I thought his acting was pretty bad in heading to the ground). definitely will be skipping this one….

  21. Kim Dong-wook, where was your agent when they were casting this drama, honey? You was robbed!

  22. I’m not sure how I feel about this. I wasn’t impress w/KHJ in BOF, but I did find him cute and funny on We Got Married. I enjoyed Kimi wa Petto a lot because of how well Matsujun did Momo. But I can’t picture KHJ as Momo, but I guess who knows right? And a side note, it feels like after BOF there has been a wave of Japanese manga to Kdrama adaptations.

  23. If anyone has read the manga for Kimi wa Petto, they will probably cringe at the thought of him playing that role. *sigh* I LOVE kdramas to no end, but I CRINGE at the thought of the industry wrecking another manga series after the industry killed BOF.

To Kim Hyung Joong, I loved you in We Got Married, but you need to learn how to ACTUALLY act!

To whoever cast him and the person who is putting this drama together, please don’t kill another Japanese manga series! I’m sure I’m not the only who has thought this.

  24. HORRIBLE CHOICE..that is one of my favorite j-dramas and there is just no way he can do it justice. Maybe he’ll surprise us but I highly doubt it.

  25. @dlslk: love you so much for the comment.

Please, don’t destroy my favourites manga. Cry!

  26. Hmm, I agree w/ everyone here that KHJ has long ways to go in acting. However, I have to disagree w/ you that he is not suited for the “warm”, “quirky”, “bubbly”, “cutesy”, “over-the-top adorable” character. In fact, I would guess that such character is more suited for him than the quiet, aloof character of Yoon Ji-hoo he played in BOF because of his real-life, 4D personality.

Acting in a film gives actors more time to practice their lines and analyze the character. I am willing to give him and this new movie a chance, and then judge after I see the final product.

  27. I mean this in the nicest way possible, but it’s time to stop the guy from relying on his pretty face.

I’m sure he’s a wonderful person but even a cross-eyed octogenerian with astigmatism can clearly see that the dude can’t act!

  28. thats one of my favorite jdramas…

i love hyun-joong, but his acting isn’t good enough for this…
    at least not yet. >__<

well if he does it i will still watch it. haha
hopefully i won't give up on it halfway like i did on BOF.

  29. He probably got cast because he once said that he resembled a puppy.

    http://popseoul.files.wordpress.com/2009/02/kimhyunjoong-090227.jpg

So of course they would cast him as the “pet”

  30. I wonder who the producer is for the korean version of Kimi wa petto. Not only is his acting not good, i think he already has enough on his plate with SS501. That guy needs to relax! he even got swine flu a few months ago!

well i hope the criticism of his acting from BOF combined with the new opportunity from this drama will improve his acting.

  31. OMG the role is ridiculous i dont think he could do it no offense to him but it’s just a very off-beat role!
and besides that was the only part in which that i actually enjoyed watching matsujun

Koyuki played the part of the woman! i adore her i hope they find someone just as suitable

  32. ARGH!!! no! I wouldn’t want KJH have bad reputation after my strong feeling of the drama’s failure….

Kimi wa petto lead…I would think of LEE HongKi!!! Oh come on! Just look at how good he is in You’re Beautiful…

If they want to remake it..I hope they make it quite memorable with a very adorable, cute and good actor …

I hope they will change it!!!

  33. I’m not a fan of KHJ’s acting either, but strangely, I can totally see him in the role.

  34. “He has just been cast as the lead in the film adaptation of popular Japanese manhwa-turned-drama Kimi wa petto, or You’re My Pet.”

this is going to be a movie right? why is everyone saying it’s a drama??? i love HJ but like most everyone here, not really impressed with his acting in BOF. I hope he’ll at least be paired up with a good actress so that it won’t be a complete disaster if ever. But then again, this is a movie which means a shorter version. So I guess 2 1/2 hours will be bearable just to watch his pretty face lol!

  35. OH SNAP! They’re going to ruin another Japanese drama!! Don’t mean to bash KHJ, but I’d be damned if the Korean remake of Kimi wa Petto can outshine the original, especially if KHJ remains the lead male character (cringe). I know he’s an amateur in the acting field, but DON’T give him the lead male part. I’ve forgotten how many times I’ve smirked and laughed at the BOF scenes when KHJ tried to be emotional or romantic. I hope the productions reconsider the casting…PLEASE!!

  36. The only description of the character that suits him is “pet”… he’s cute as a puppy, but that’s about it!

Since he has already signed on, he better commit himself to a rigorous acting workshop!

  37. Is there such a thing a lesson learned? KHJ got a lot of slack
playing Ji Hoo and now they want him to play someone
quirky? He needs to put a LOT of work into playing that
role…I wonder who the older woman going to be?
Hopefully someone who packs a lot of heat and
    has the acting chops.

  38. I missed the word ‘film adaptation’ when first reading the article, since my head and heart was screaming “NOOooooooo” in fully anguished screams – though I’ve since recovered. Kinda. I never cared for Matsujun, as an actor, in Hana Yori Dango (the whole drama was kinda blergh to me, lol) but he really captured my heart as Momo in Kimi wa Petto.

Kimi wa Petto is one of the strangest quirkiest dramas I’ve ever seen, and I can’t see it being squeezed down successfully into a film – never mind who’s acting in it. The whole gimmick captures the viewers/readers, but what really makes the drama/manhwa *work* is character-development, the slow-moving ‘romance’, and all the interactions between Momo and his ‘owner’. The whole concept that they ‘need’ each other took time to develop in the drama (which was around 10-11 episodes, if I remember correctly…?), which overall lead to a successful ‘relationship’. LOL, so many ‘quotes’ that I’m using. Their relationship was rather hard to characterize with generic terms ^_^

Anyhow, I cannot see how KHJ can successfully pull this off. KHJ acting cute? adorable? pet-ish? *sighs* They better get an equally-awful lead actress, so I can just bow my head, sigh, and move on ~

  39. Ahh poor KHJ. He is very pretty, but I have to agree with all the comments, that he is too stiff and wooden. But I think he would be perfect as Tenjo Nighto in Absolute boyfriend/Zettai Kareshi.

  40. His acting needs work….but surprisingly enough this role fits him way better then ji hoo. If you watched We Got Married…you can really see how charismatic this guy can be. Let’s hope he doesn’t kill his career with this!!!

  41. Whao~~ Seriously? I can’t imagine him in this role. Jang Geun Seuk , on the other hand, would have been a more hopeful choice. KHJ though, not gonna lie, sure is a pretty boy.

  42. I have much affection for HJ after watching WGM, but ugh…BOF was just unbearable. What’s with all the Jmanga remakes all of sudden, are they trying to find romantic comedy material for “idols” turned “actors?” lols.

  43. OMG. Seriously? Kim Hyun Joong for Kimi Wa Petto?! No way! I can’t imagine my Momo like that T_T I’ve always wanted Heechul for that role!!!

  44. i loved khj on we got married but i skipped all his parts on BOF after wincing through the beginning. enough is enough! i mean it’s not his fault the writers put him so many scenes but it along with other things ruined BOF for me. just the fact that ji hoo had so much screen time bothered me as it almost felt like he and jandi were the main couple. and this version of rui spent a lot more time on screen then for the taiwanese version and (probably) the j version which i didn’t watch. he should be aware that his acting wasn’t very good in BOF and he gets credit for it since it was such a hyped up drama :/

  45. oh gosh, why kimi wa petto? and with him (is it due to his past ‘we got married’ variety show)? i really like that japanese drama, so good and heartbreaking when i watch matsumoto. *preventing the urge to rewatch it again…not…a…good…time…finals..close…*

  46. That’s great. I don’t have to watch it.

  47. I think people have forgotten that his role in BBF was that of an autistic person. So if he was too stiff, it shouldn’t be regarded as bad acting but just doing his part!

    He might be better here

  48. @26
“Hmm, I agree w/ everyone here that KHJ has long ways to go in acting. However, I have to disagree w/ you that he is not suited for the “warm”, “quirky”, “bubbly”, “cutesy”, “over-the-top adorable” character. In fact, I would guess that such character is more suited for him than the quiet, aloof character of Yoon Ji-hoo he played in BOF because of his real-life, 4D personality”

Thank you for saying that. I totally agreed with you here. I saw an interview of him (can’t remember where) when he was talking about his childhood and he was “warm”,”quirky”,”bubbly”,”cutesly”, and “over-the-top-adorable”.

    Aja Aja Kim Hyun-joong

  49. @pennylanechic…i just read your comment, good thing it’s a very recent comment…I just thought of that right now :) Heechul would be perrrfect, that cat-like young man. Seems like a role that befits him. I wouldn’t mind him taking the role of matsumoto. Oh heechul, he’ll have to wait some more for his fitting role. aakk, i don’t know anymore.

  50. No! You’re kidding! There are some many good lookings who can act!

  51. I know I shouldn’t judge before seeing it, but allow me to vent:

Why is he ruining another character? He’ll ruin momo!

Ahem…please prove me wrong Hyun Joong. Please.

  52. Really mixed feeling here……excited to see KHJ’s pretty face on screen, but not too enthu about his stiff acting……I may give it a try and see if he’s improved from his much criticized acting in BOF.
I guess wether I watch it will also depend on the female lead casted too…..if the remaining cast seems interesting and fresh enough, why not?!?

  53. @heya
You think so too? ^___^ I love Heechul but I’m seriously not being biased here. When I got to know him better I instantly thought of Momo LoL.

But I think Min Ki would also do a great job, Hongki could also act the part but I think he looks too young for the role?

I just can’t imagine Hyun Joong as Momo T_T Not Momo please T_T

  54. Hmm… no disrespect but if all you know of KHJ is from what you’ve seen on BOF, then I can see how this would be a disaster waiting to happen in your minds…

I don’t think he did a terrible job in BOF but he was definitely acting mainly because the character was so far removed from his real self. And I actually enjoyed his Ji Hoo as compared to say…the taiwanese version of BOF or the Japanese version.

I think he’d be totally suited to this role because his actual character is closer to the quirky, cute, and slightly spacey….if anything, he wouldn’t have to try to act because he’d probably identify with the character a lot more and it’s a role a lot closer to his real life persona (from what I see from variety shows).

And younger guy and older woman? Like some others have commented… Go watch him on We Got Married with Hwang Bo… totally hilarious…he can totally pull off a comic role without even trying too hard. Anyway, he’s an idol star so I guess it doesn’t really matter whether he flops or not…people will still love him…*LOL

I can so see him playing this role with better success than BOF! Looking forward to seeing how he does.

  55. @pennylanechic: You really speak my mind.

    so sad….

  56. I liked the drama and I’ve thought of different Korean actors that would fit (Lee Minwoo mostly for the hair and hyper personality, not to mention dance skill) but never once would i have thought of this guy. I’ve seen only parts of BOF and I wasnt impressed with his acting at all. I hope he can live up to this character because it’s such a fun story.

  57. @ Masaya

I am so with you on that one.

  58. ugh, LOL?
I didn’t see the original, but now i don’t plan to watch the remake either.
KHJ totally killed it (in the bad way) in BOF for me, My sis and I still have hella fun imitating his (non-existent) facial expressions in BOF. =)

  59. No. Just; er, no. I’ll stab my eyes out before I watch it. Momo is actually an extremely dificult part to play, and although I think he did a good job there were even parts that MatsuJun had trouble with. He got the playful, quirky, funny part down, he could play the pet really well, but what made the manga SO interesting was the tension between Momo the pet and the real desires of Momo the man, and how Sumire had to sort out her conflicting feelings for both “halves” of his character.
The jdrama really played down that aspect – in fact, they changed the end to totally get away from it, I think because perhaps they just couldn’t go there; it was more comfortable to stay with Momo as the cutesy pet. A film could really get into the more serious relationship dynamic – but no, not with that casting choice. This sounds like Kimi wa Petto with a 12-year-old audience in mind. Sigh. Did they maybe get their manga mixed up? How about Hana Kimi? (Hey, one word is the same…) I can totally see KHJ as that lead.

  60. Oh, geez. Forget the problem with KHJ’s acting, I just wish they’d stop remaking Japanese manga/dramas! Korea produces perfectly good dramas on their own, so why the current trend towards remaking everything Japan’s ever done? The Taiwanese drama industry has done it already, and look at some of the messes they made of it. Recently, it’s like a bunch of people up and thought, “Hey, let’s remake everything that’s done well on Japanese TV screens!”

  61. @julie 7- I totally agree with you. This is such a quirky, off beat role. I loved Matsumoto Jun in it because it was pretty different from Domyoji for him. And I loved the woman they picked to play opposite him.

I can’t see Kim Hyun-joong in this. At. All. No offense to him but I hope he gets some sort of personality transplant or acting lessons before taking this on.

  62. woah, was he really “forced?” wow, I didn’t know he was initially indifferent about his role in BOF..
    I saw him in that weird sitcom where he was a golfer (back in the day when I used to worship SS501.. LOL), and in that he was worse (with his stiff-ness) than in BOF O_O;;
haha it’s so weird because he usually had a pretty up beat personality so if he just USED that when he acted.. it could be helpful :/ (well for this drama it seems.. what a turn in character!)
I’ve never heard about this j-drama.. but It’ll be interesting to hear more about it!

  63. It’s just wrong for a guy to be this pretty.

  64. ok…this is a catastrophe in the making…i can feel it in my bones!!! lol

but seriously, I think it would be really hard for a lot of actors to top MatuJun’s acting in Kimi Wa Petto, and Kim Hyun-joong is not the best there is…really I think he won’t be able to pull off Momo…

  65. My first reaction was What?! NO!!!… Why are they remaking Kimi wa Petto at all?

Its such a cute and quirky jdrama. It should stay as a jdrama.

With KHJ, I’m a little torn. I agree his acting BOF wasn’t great, but he’s great in We Got Married. I just just started watching it and I am hooked. I love it to bits.

So I don’t know. But I wouldn’t ming seeing JGS in it. I can just picture JGS in that scene where Matsujun is on his knees with a cheeky smile and his paw out. hehehe

But KHJ is really kool and funny in We got Married, so im torn..

  66. Oh well here goes another one of my fave jdorama’s killed by crappy acting.
*sigh* Hana Yori Dango murder all over again =/

  67. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…..

+_+” I think the guy is extremely handsome (borderline can-pull-off-as-a-girl if he wants to) but he can’t really act… TT___TT

Kimi wa petto is one of a few enjoyable jdorama of my liking lists. I mean I’d love to see a korean remake version but why not cast someone else who can show a broader range of emotion as needed for the role?

Matsumoto Jun is did a really good job in the show pulling off as cute-puppy looking guy. +_+” I can’t really see KHJ as puppy-like….

    >_> Let’s hope for the best.

  68. ooooh! Kimi Wa Petto remake! interesting…. I’d like to see it!

  69. oh no! :( Kimi wa petto is one of my favourites.. It has a very special place in my heart.. when I first read the premise of the story, Momo’s character seems like a very difficult role. I can’t imagine how anyone can pull it off. But MatsuJun did and I fell in love with him even more *sigh* hehehe..

I’ve only seen KHJ on BOF so I might not be the best judge. But… but.. I really can’t picture him playing Momo. Well, let’s just wait and see I guess..

  70. @skelly: I totally agree with you.

I’ve never watched the J drama but I love the manga so much.
And as far as I know, Momo is a very deep character. Cute, funny,… is a small part (and easy do act) of Momo.
The human Momo is completely a playboy, a man with past, desire and dream.
So of course, the’s no way KHJ can act the role.

    …even his appearance doesn’t fit.

  71. Yes his acting really needs polishing. I think he got cast because of his popularity and they need that for ratings. I was rather dissapointed whenever he was chosen over Lee Min Ho for acting awards and popularity for the BOF project. Lee Min Ho was probably too natural in his acting that people dun knw how good he is.

Hopefully this time round, his emotions will come out more. I think his problem with acting is that he is too cool a guy evident in how he conduct himself interviews. Most good actors tend to be more dramatic or emotional in their personality.

  72. Oh.
I’m sorry to offend anyone at all, but I don’t think KHJ is particularly handsome, a particularly good singer, or a particularly good actor. I think he was decent in BOF because Ji-hoo had to be a really hidden sorta person (though probably not as hidden as KHJ made him seem). The problem is they’re giving him roles that have already been established…
Oguri Shun as Hanazawa Rui… i LOVED him. That guy can pull off the cool (as well as in Hana Kimi…)
MatsuJun in Kimi wa petto… that guy’s proved he can do quirky.
Personally, I just can’t see KHJ as “quirky.”
But I do wish him the best of luck… I don’t want this drama to become laughing stock. If KHJ is fortunate, this will turn into another huge wave that he can ride on, like BOF, where it doesn’t really matter if he’s a good/bad actor.

  73. @ 29 Jasmin — LOL. That picture is so FREAKING FUNNY. Reminds me of that one time Makino calls Domyouji a dog and a puppy is superimposed next to his face like a comparison shot.

Anyways, HYD-Korean was a bit of a let-down (except for that single glorious pool catharsis moment in 25), so I’m not expecting much for this one. That’s probably best; if KHJ ends up wowing us, all the better for him. If he doesn’t, then I can probably say “Yeah…I saw that coming…”

  74. Bad acting aside, he can be my pet any day :P

I agree with many of you… He probably won’t have to act too much since the 4Dness of the character would be close to his own… definitely got cast because of WGM’s sucessful pairing of him and HB.

Hope they don’t ruin the original… I like the Jap version even tho I’m not a big Matsu fan… this drama got a lot to live up to, despite the low expectations we are seeing here.

And poor female lead… they must be having a headache picking the right woman who will win the audience approval and not attract a ton of hateful responses from fans, which will probably make her life miserable. With an idol/pretty boy like this, some fans are really just crazy and things could go to extremes either way (really approve or really hate) All I can say is – Good luck!

Although I can totally see how Jang Geun-Suk will rule this role, as I’ve comment a long time ago about BBF, he’s making very wise choices not to involve himself in these remakes or dramas that draw the hype from a previously famous work -
Because He doesn’t need that… he’s established enough to carry an Original drama like YB now… and should continue doing that!

  75. Who cares? Kim Hyun Joong is in it… I’d watch it even if my eyes bleed. just as long as i get to see his beautiful face and smile. I know he’s not the best actor but he got better. And that’s what actors do. they get better by acting in more movies and dramas. GeunSuk is okay. I like his movies and other dramas but in you’re beautiful… he just seems stiff or over the top. And if you think about it… you’re beautiful is not even a very good. It’s way over dramatic over little things that aren’t even that big of a deal and it moves too fast.. one minute she’s a nun next minute she’s a boy in love with another boy. not that i don’t like it, i still watch it.

  76. The producers must be blind or suicide for choosing KHY, he can’t act at all, he killed HYD for me (one of the jdrama i love beside Kimi wa petto, Matsumoto Jun was brilliant). I absolutely loved him in We got married with Hwang Bo but seriously i can already feel the dissapoinment.

Is this new confirmed yet? They could probably cast another actor if the criticim is bad??

  77. i quite like him as himself – seems like a generally nice guy – but oh man oh man, him as the lead for KwP? not working for me, i’m not convinced.

true enough, he better buck up cos otherwise darn, they’ll just spoil the goodness of the japanese version. now i’m anticipating the reveal of the female lead!

  78. we will see =]
he’s really expressionless, if he really good to act as puppy boy so I will give him two thumbs up, but if not i will skip his drama forever

  79. I hope they won’t mess this up… Kimi wa petto was one of my fave J Drama.

  80. If Kim Hyun Joong as Momo then the Sumire Chan should be Honey Lee, i Wanna see the sparks fly as she is his Ideal girl hehehheheh

  81. This role is an extremely tricky and difficult role to pull off, even for a veteran actor. The actor has to be able to teeter between being adorable like a pet and yet, manly enough to establish a female and male relationship PLUS exude sophistication and sensitivity.

I had hesitations about Jun Matsumoto playing the role. However, it was a pleasant surprise to find that he was actually very impressive in the role.

This role would be a killer for anyone without strong acting skills. And, it could turn out to be the comedy of the year, instead of the romance of the year.

  82. Kim hyun Joong and Honey Lee as his heroine :D

  83. WTF… And I am a fan.

    Sigh.

  84. am i blind? *yes you are?* his looks doesn’t appeal to me, but heechul’s looks does. but both have that girly look. it’s the personal preference thing i guess. I was hoping heechul would get the part. atleast he acts a bit better and he’s all funny outwardly, but he’s got that serious side he doesn’t show in public as an ‘idol’ (lol) so i’m ok if it was heechul playing the complex and adorable momo.

  85. Kimi wa Petto is my fav story! (I have not watched the Jdrama). Oh my, I don’t think I will watch the movie if the acting is bad since it will spoil the characters for me!~

  86. EEEWWW!!!! I have never heard such horrible casting!!! It’s so off the mark. Kim Hyun Joong would have to show a variety of emotions as a pet (if he is taking that character), I can’t even imagine how he’ll look as a pet. MatsuJun sorta fit the role, he’s weird enough to, I’m no Kimi Wa Petto fan though, the plot weirds me out but I have watched bits of it… SS501 fans must be thrilled.

  87. I, for one, jumped of excitement to learn that he was casted in a movie.

I’am a fan of his, but not because of BOF. I became a fan after BOF while watching WGM (In episode 26 of WGM there’s a particular scene where he acted very cute).

In real life, KHJ has a very quirky and chipper personality. There are dozens of clips of reality shows, variety shows and interviews in youtube that he’s been on with the other members of SS501 that can attest to that (search for ‘Chunderella’).

He’s not a trained actor and the filming of BOF was rushed. Even for actors who had done well in previous dramas or movies can falter under similar circumstances (Remember Jung Il Woo and Yoon Eun Hye in My Fair Lady?) It usually takes several weeks or months to shoot a movie, whereas on TV, they can’t afford to do that due to schedule restrictions.

Studios want to make money with commercial movies with popular actors for young audiences (I watched a lot of teen movies as an adolescent) so that they can finance artsy films for sophisticated audiences. Kim Hyun Joong can be a boxoffice draw. He got over 25 million votes from netizens as most popular actor at the Seoul International Drama Awards last September; way ahead of Lee Jun Ki, who got second place.

Let’s give the kid a chance and not be too harsh for only his acting in BOF, if that’s the only thing you’ve seen him in.

    Good luck KHJ!

  88. dammit NOO!! i loved the jdrama, i loved the manga, and i liked matsumoto jun in it. kim hyun joong is gonna ruin it fo sho. mrarrghh!!! he is the total opposite of the warm personality that the role requires. sigh… i can only hope that he drops out before it’s finalized.

  89. In new manga drama??
in some interviewed he said that Ji Hoo is not him at all, in words, style or expression. He said he is totaly up side down with Ji Hoo character. He is more like him in WGM. So, may be this is a chance for him to prove that he is not Ji Hoo, that he is cute, bubbly, funny and etc….. Let’s give him a chance to explore what he is, if he is not Ji Hoo. KHJ, fighting!!!

  90. oh. no. heechul or JGS perhaps.

  91. LOL ….while I was reading all the comments I sorta imagined a collage of cringing faces then the end clip of KHJ as Momo wanting to be petted….disaster!

  92. Face the facts, he can’t act..

  93. [...] to Javabeans, Hyunjoong has been cast in the Korean remake of the Japanese drama Kimi Wa Petto. I have [...]

  94. KHJ as MOMO, No Please!!!
when i heard Kimi Wa Petto being remade into KDrama, my mind immediately goes to Lee Minki, i can totally see him being the adorable/quirky/slightly strange Momo…
i haven’t watched WGM at all (any pair for that matter), but i believe WGM is NOT a drama, it’s a scripted variety show, I know the 4D of KHJ, i’ve seen some of his interviews, but in BOF his acting made me cringe sometimes

well if the PD really want this casting continues, KHJ really need to polish up his acting skills and they really need to find an amazing actress as the main lead…

  95. This is a bad idea, imo…

I CANNOT believe there are people in the K-entertainment industry who think that KHJ has earned the chance to act in ANOTHER high-profile drama remake. Honestly, I can name TEN actors who deserved this role more than KHJ right now.
    Un-freaking-believable.

And to think that an actor as awesome and superbly talented as Jang Geun Suk had to do numerous dramas and movies before he was cast as a lead character in one…it boggles my mind!

Somewhere in Japan, Matsumoto Jun is shaking his head in disbelief….LOLL….

  96. one of the best jdramas i’ve ever watched and they casted kim hyun joong as the “pet”????? gimme a break…. i watched him in boys before flowers and i gotta say that his acting flopped big time, cant they pick another actor??

for koyuki’s role, im not sure if there’s any k-actress who could do the role as good as koyuki herself… no one comes to my mind as of now… but i have to say that she must be tall as hell!.

  97. they could’ve casted jang geun seok or lee min ki or whoever else besides kim hyun joong!!!

  98. As much as i love him i would prefer him to be an awesome singer than an lousy actor !

  99. maybe i shpuld give this guy another chance to prove himself in the acting industry….

  100. um. No.

As much as I enjoyed BOF for what it was (and I did, with the exception that I thought that it needed some serious editing in the middle to tighten it up), and as pretty as KHJ is, that’s a role that needs some serious acting talent. Can anyone here see him bounding up to his “owner” at the door? Didn’t think so.

I’m trying to visualize any of the current younger men who could pull that role off – both the human and pet side of the character – and it’s a toughie. I actually quite like SS501, but I’m a fan of the guy harmony genre from Motown to today.

(And no my name has nothing to do with Kimi wa Petto, I’ve been Momo for 45 years, first Momo-chan, then Momo-san – stupid nicknames stick with you for your whole life. )

  101. Is this a drama or a movie?

  102. I LOVE KHJ

    <3

He's cute and funny in real life, but like the 100 comments before me,

    HE CAN'T REALLY ACT.

That's rather sad, but I'll acknowledge that.

CAN HE PLS DO SOMETHING THAT HE'S MORE APT IN?!?

  103. i like Kimi wa petto but i wasn’t really crazy over MJ’s acting. i like him personally and i thought he did a decent job but not great like some claimed. and as for KHJ remaking this character, we need to cut this boy some slack since we’ve only seen him as Jihoo. there are a lot of actors out there who acted in many dramas/films yet still failed to impress me with their acting ability.

when i watched KHJ in BOF, i cringed all the way to ending ‘coz i love oguri shun’s rui and to me, no one can play that character but shun. however, after watching WGM i was totally impressed with his real personality. i can somewhat see him doing this character. i thought i read somewhere when this news first came out that he’ll be acting opposite Su-Ae. i hope she’ll reconsider :)

  104. his acting is not the greatest thing out there but he is MIGHTY HOT ^_^

  105. KHJ should be remaking Absolute Boyfriend instead, I would certainly “buy” him as a hot robot;-)

  106. what the hell im beginning to think Koreans dont have any original ideas

  107. he should stop acting and focus on his music . i gave up watching BOF becoz of his terrible and annoying performance there. Kim Hyun Joong, please don’t torture us anymore….

  108. Oh mannn. So conflicted when I saw this post! I love 10-episode jdramas (and was particularly charmed by the plot of Kimi wa Petto), but I’m not a kdrama addict for nothing and can’t deny I’m looking fwd to a Korean remake.

KHJ is indeed beautiful to look at, and giving him the benefit of the doubt…he might be able to pull off quirky onscreen. The question (or should I say instead, hope?) is whether KHJ can pull off the depth behind the character. He seems like a hardworker, so who knows…maybe with a dynamic script and good directing, it’ll be grrrreat! *fingers crossed*

Btw. Really interested in who the leading lady is gonna be–I hope the producers find someone tomboyishly sexy. I think that might be an interesting match opposite KHJ..doesn’t he always say how his type is the “sexy lady”? Good chemistry between the 2 leads is a MUST for Kimi wa Petto to work, imo.

And of course, I can’t help my current crazy crush for Jang Geun Suk go unmentioned here. Definitely do agree with others that he’d be an awesome choice for in this role because he already has the right mix of boyish charm, quirkiness, & emotional depth in his acting.

  109. And @104, pleeeeeeease no!

Absolute Boyfriend deserves a better male lead (despite KHJ’s picture-perfect pretty boy looks). Hayami Mokomichi totally owned the complexities of Tenjo Night.

And at that thought, all I can imagine is a BOF JiHoo’s wooden acting in a robot role….and that’s absolutely nightmarish to me!!!

  110. I don’t know, KHJ always seems so tired and like a dead fish to me. Something about his eyes. Maybe it is because he was so emotionless in BOF. I can’t imagine him being quirky and energentic as a “pet”.

That being said, we should not be too quick to judge…..give the guy a chance and see what he can come up with. Maybe he will do the part justice…..is it possible??

I will watch the series. I too think Honey Lee will be awesome as the female lead. She is beautiful & classy.

  111. Oh god this is going to be terrible. Something tells me he was muscled into this by his agency, like BOF. That poor boy.

  112. Lol my reaction was the same as many others: Nooooooooooooo! I like KHJ and all, but he’s not a good actor.. and to be the main lead in a role I can’t see him pulling off..just imagining him in the role igives me goose bumps.

Besides, I’m not sure if Kimi wa Petto would translate well to a Korean story. It might just turn out a bit awkward.

  113. I like the idea of KHJ in Kimi wa Petto, three reasons
    1) I think his real -life personality is closer to that of the ‘pet’ than to Ji Hoo in BoF. My theory is that he’ll, if not nail, at least come off better on this one because in live shows (like We Got Married) he has a fun, quirky sense of humor, and so long as he keeps that for the show he really doesn’t need to be able to act for this.

    2) KHJ is, by reputation, I’ve never seen any examples, a good dancer right? I’ve a little dance training and I was disappointed in the scenes of Jun’s supposed world-class modern work. I expected better from a professional band member (which these days means you should at least be able to dance with confidence plus show some mix of fluidity and posture right?)

3)Did I really have to mention I’m quite partial to his _unbelievable_ good looks? :) (I’m a YB addict, but I have to admit, for sheer looks, KHJ pretty much leaves the YB cast in the dust… ouch! Don’t hit me! I really do love JGS more! Just being honest… )

Though I want a _very_ good actress in the lead role, for three reasons

    1) I think it’s a tough role to pull through and to be honest the original KWP i thought didn’t have a lead actress who could do that

    2) A good actress can be the anchor of a good performance and inspire even usually mediocre actors to do better by example/chemistry generation/maybe straight up acting advice (my favorite example of this is from the HK-China movie “Comrades- Almost a Love Story”, before that I thought Leon Lai was just a pretty face, but when you put in on one screen with Maggie Cheung, suddenly even he seemed like a Cannes-level actor… well… almost! :) )

    3) I like the role of the lead girl here- it sounds like cave-man talk to an American audience, but the choice of a man who is simply and entirely just devoted to you and not accomplished in the traditional money-earning ways, shorter than you and who comes into your life as a play thing, is a brave decision still in Asia.

Thank you again JB for all the news- I’m one of the masses of grateful illiterates who depends on generous people like you to get my K-drama hits! ;)

  114. My initial reaction O.O NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

WTH casted him on this role? If it’s the Group8 ppl then that’s understandable since that company really DOES NOT know quality!!!

What is up with Koreans adapting Japanese mangas? Why won’t they instead make a live action for manhwas that hasn’t been done yet. Let’s see there are:

    Hot Blooded Woman
    Can’t Lose You
    You’re So Cool
    Chocolat
    Bring It On
The Bride of the Water God (fantasy genre they can totally pull this off like The Legend)
    Snow Drop
    They Too Love
    Hush
    Bird Kiss
    Angel Diary
    Model
    Masca
    Replay

    … must I keep listing?

So why are they remaking Kimi wa Petto? Matsumoto Jun owned that role (he was so darn cute and lovable in it). Didn’t the Man Who Can’t Get Married do poorly because of the Japanese humor aspect of it. Why can’t they see that this will amount to the same thing too or maybe poorer since they’re casting Kim Hyun-joong (man is indeed beautiful, but for a lead ACTING role … he has none!)

  115. I was never a fan of him to begin with, and his acting in BOF totally put me off. He is quite pretty to look at though, but I often find that when ever i look at him on screen his nose seems to draw my attention, which can be annoying LOL.
I haven’t seen the japanese version of the show, but will defininately watch it as it seems interesting.
I find that picture of him quite funny, what’s with his expression…the mounth…

  116. I don’t see it, nearly every other Korean actor is better looking than this guy so I don’t see the whole “he so good looking” things. Anyway this is gonan be a disaster, the drama was edgy and very different, Koreans tend to do overly violent or cheesy and to get the girls in I bet it won’t be very daring. Can he act like MatsuJun did? I highly doubt it.

  117. All I can say is NOOOOOO!!! I mean jis acting in BOF was painful to watch, why not give Momo’s part to a upcoming actor or someone better.
@goldliIys, I wonder that myseld sometimes(not that I read any mahwa I prefer manga) but maybe because the japanese comics are far better known or the mangaka is so famous or that the jdorama or movie version was so huge that they hope to mimic the success( a la HYD and Meteor Shower)

I though So Ae was already cast as Koyuki’s character ?

  118. Not that I think that he would fit the role but I think that I saw improvement in his acting during the entire run of the BOF storyline… I forgive him since it was his first acting job and Jihoo-sunbae part was really quite passive even in the manga version.. (it was just Shun Oguri of the Japanese BOF was so good in his role as Rui that I think he became a basis for the role)..

On the otherhand, I think that MatsuJun’s character in Kimi wa Petto is so quirky (and bubbly and I admit that he did such an amazing job in that drama) that I have no idea how KHJ is gonna pull it off… whenever he had to do cutesy things even just a little, he would cringe and openly admit that he doesn’t like doing those sort of things… so maybe the part must be given to a more suitable actor who can do cute and quirky.. Actors that come to mind are Heechul, Hongki, GeunSuk (as long as he’s partnered with PSH!!!!), Jaejoong (despite the controversy he’s facing at the moment, he can do cute and quirky!).. Hell, I even think Hyung Joon would be able to pull it off better than Hyun Joong!

  119. are they really only thinking about ratings nowadays. I am pretty sure the rating will be high for this remake only with KHJ fans but NOOO WAY!!! how could they just cast him for replacing Matsumoto Jun. Jun has this charismatic acting that KHJ will never have even with few months of hard working!

He destroyed the character of hanazawa rui and I was crying on BOF now he will make me have a heartattack with this remake

CROSS MY FINGERS that he will take some serious lesson of acting (work hard dear!!!)
Sorry don t want to be mean

  120. @104: “KHJ should be remaking Absolute Boyfriend instead, I would certainly “buy” him as a hot robot;-)”

I haven’t seen Absolute Boyfriend yet, but when you said KHJ should play the role of a “hot robot”, it just made me laugh =) …. and now I feel bad for laughing. I’m sure he’s a nice guy..

Also, I love kdramas so much that when they said they’ll do the remake of MG before, I was so excited. After BOF, not so excited about remakes anymore =(

  121. i can’t see him as Momo but this is gonna be a must watch XD

  122. I really liked KHJ in “We got married”, watched it after BOF and was suprised by his real self ;)
If he acted in WGM than this man actually can act :) )
On the other side I can’t see him playing Momo, thats to weird.
    How abt casting Song Joong-ki?!!
He is my choice as Momo :) ))

  123. Maybe he wasn’t really immersed in the character he was playing in BOF, that’s why he was very stiff as Ji Hoo. But I saw him in WGM and he was very funny and spontaneous so if his character in this new project is quirky, maybe there’s hope.

This makes me curious so I’m going to give it a try although I’m not a big fan of KHJ.

  124. #goldlilys: I agree with you that a lot of mangwhas have not been turned into drama or movie. Having said that, from your list, the one which is truly worth making into a drama is bride of the water god. Everything about that story is so breathtaking, original and reflect Korean folklore.

Kiwi Wa petto is such an unique manga. The same goes for Old Boy, which has been brilliantly transformed to a movie by a Korean director. But that’s another story altogether!

  125. woah woah woah woah!!! Hold the phone.

WTF are they doing to my Kimi wa Petto??!!?? And I’m not even talking about casting KHJ (bad idea). I’m really curious to see more of a plot synopsis for this movie, because aside from a successful working woman living with a younger man, I don’t see many remaining similarities to the manga I hold so close to my heart.

Sumire was written not simply as a successful woman, but an “Elite”, having graduated from Toudai AND Harvard. She worked in the International News department of a major newspaper until her reassignment, and was also model-gorgeous, taller than about 75% of the men around her, with a distaste for the fake cutesy-ness rampant in Japanese females of the day and a love for professional wrestling. Sumire Iwaya was everything a Japanese woman should not be, and she was successful at it, which made her that much more of a character to be ridiculed/envied by her co-workers and others. On top of all this she was still rife with her insecurities and flaws. From the sound of this synopsis (for the K-movie) they are taking the character out of the male-dominated news industry and placing her into the safe and fluffy world of a fashion magazine (*gasp* not that!! how many fashion mag scripts have been thrown around this year?). The only way I see them doing justice to the character with this premise is if she starts as a reporter for a major global news magazine and then gets reassigned to the fashion one. They had better find an amazing actress to fill this role, and one who’s taller than the 180 cm listed on KHJ’s D-wiki profile.

*sighs* and we won’t even start on KHJ being Momo… it just hurts my head too much to even fathom it….

    ugh.

  126. Some of you people are a little bit harsh.. Just because KHJ’s “character” in Boys was a little bit stiff, doesn’t mean that he is.

Give him a chance to act different characters.

    I hope he does well.

  127. Hehhhhh? Seriously, this is really bad casting. KHJ was not acting in BOF, he was just there.

LOL at the idea of him as a robot – totally believable. Perfect looks, stiff as a board!

  128. I LOVE Kim Hyun Joong. I AM his fan! I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY love him. I Do! I REALLY LOVE HIM!

BUT… When I read this article, the first thing that came to my mind was: ‘REALLY? Oh, no!’.

I wish he would focus on his music career because acting is really not his thing. He improved his acting while ‘Boys Over Flowers’ was airing, but I still think the drama would have been better if other actor played his role and other actress played Geum Jandi role.

I think this is probably his management forcing him to accept this role. Because he said many times, that he never had ambition to be actor. And I don’t think that he enjoys acting that much either.

Besides that, as much as I don’t like Matsumoto Jun, he’s experienced in acting and has proven many times that he’s capable of acting. So Kim Hyun Joong will have a hard time trying because he probably won’t be able to top Jun’s acting in that drama.

I sound like I am Hyun Joong’s anti, right? I AM NOT!

I’m his fan and because I love Hyun Joong so much, I wish he would stop embarassing himself by trying acting again.

  129. Hm…
Looks like my list of “Things to watch so I can bash them with clear conscience later” is getting longer.

  130. Omo… did I read correctly?

    L.E.A.D.!.?

@125: Being a fan of Hyunjoong, I know that he himself is a fun, lively guy who can easily make others laugh. Sad to say, his acting is bland. Not to mention Rui is a very “simple” character, yet Hyunjoong still looked like a dead fish.

It’s not about the “character” or role, it’s the fact that Hyunjoong cannot emote feelings/emotions that well.

As far as giving him a chance, I don’t think people would care if he got a role if it was a side character. Until his acting improves, couldn’t he just get a side role or second lead? But goodness gracious, the LEAD!? THAT’S whats so bothering, it’s not even funny.

Now. Kimi wa Petto. I wholeheartedly agree with amhracas.

    *sigh*

On the topic of mangas turned into dramas/movie, Korea has a real advantage with the serious dramatic plots over comedic ones (although there were great comedic dramas made, the vast majority ended up during the second half of the serious in the usual dramatic… stuff.)

In fact, there’s so much drama about tragic deaths and etc, I couldn’t help but laugh when I was reading a manhua (Chinese comic/manga) when I read this page:

    http://www.mangafox.com/manga/the_one/v04/c024/5.html

But if it’s a Japanese manga that should turn into a K-drama, I only pray for Nana. The story plot is, as usual from Yazawa, amazing (it’s the slice-of-life type, not the plain cute/comedic stuff).

  131. wah!! hongki is way better for this role!!!! for those who have seen this drama.. look at his picture here:

    http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m6/zycerlyn/4526_113834115808_76437470808_26334.jpg

don’t you think he’d make a more fitting momo???? ne? ne? ne? no offense to his fans but i really do hope hongki will replace him instead..

  132. PS:

    ‘39 Angie – Nov 9, 2009 at 8:51 pm
Ahh poor KHJ. He is very pretty, but I have to agree with all the comments, that he is too stiff and wooden. But I think he would be perfect as Tenjo Nighto in Absolute boyfriend/Zettai Kareshi.’

^That’s true… If he’s going to try acting again, he could play Tenjo Night of ‘Absolute boyfriend/Zettai Kareshi’ instead. He would be able to be convincing on that role (I’m not saying this in a sarcastic way).

  133. Hahahaha. I am SO watching Ep 1!

Hahahahahaha. I’m going to hell. Haha. Hah. Heh.

  134. KHY is one of my fave korean stars…
but how the heck could he play the role of momo just like the cuteness of the ever gorgeous Matsujun?

    >>>>i can’t take it anymore…it’s really unbelievable…
    this is insane…

  135. @jacqueline: Agreed with your comments.

KHJ acted cute in “We got married”. But I think he is quite “cool” in real life. He did not thank his partner in “We got married” when they received the best couple award…… But Hwang Bo said thank you to KHJ’s fans lah. Sigh….

His acting in BOF is a disaster – “without any facial expression” or “with only one expression – day-dreaming”. He was like this when he acted in a short drama in a variety show a few years ago…. So no high hope on KHJ on acting. Maybe he is the lady verion of Kim Tae Hee…Nice to look at but is quite intolerable (not just boring) to watch them in movie/drama.

But KHJ must be really popular in Korea. The director of BOF has said many times in one interview that he made the right decision to select KHJ (not even Lee Min Ho) since he brought the high ratings to this drama.

Box office numbers/ratings may be a more important factor to consider when the director selects the cast….Sigh again………….

I have not watched the Japanese version since I do not like the male and female leads. So very likely to pass this k-movie lah…

  136. Oh. It’s a movie. Tears of laughter blurred my vision.

In that case, I won’t be watching it anyway.

Still, it makes me giggle to think of him trying to act like Jeremy. It’s harsh, and maybe we’re all completely off base. But, I’m basing this also on his performance for BOF, which was abysmal. I can’t think of a role less appropriate for him. Which, invariably, makes it hilarious.

BTW, what is Lee Min Ho doing, besides Dunkin commercials?? Huh??

  137. Hopefully, this won’t be confirmed because I’m a little skeptical about KHJ being able to pull off the Momo role. It would definitely be too difficult for him to live up to MatsuJun’s acting. This drama however, would probably do well regardless because of KHJ acting in BBF and the fact that this is a highly popular manga.

  138. What’s up with this article? Trying hard to bring in readers, and to stir up one boring blog. No surprise! You can do a lot better than being one sore/biased writer

  139. I thought he would never act again based on his reaction after BBF… Where the hell is Lee Min Ho when the less acting skilled singer/actor has decided to come back and the best and most popular guy with lots of acting talent has disappeared…. i am so disapointed….

  140. I think Javabeans, you are being too snarky, even through you said that you are not being snarky. but seriously give the poor guy a chance. there are alot of his fans worldwide, and some of the comments you make about him is just nasty.

  141. 140 comments already………………..

  142. I think we should give KHJ another chance on this one. I get the impression that his character in BOF was quite a hard one to play (reserved but caring). I’m saying this just from looking at other dramas where the second lead’s acting falls down because of a too reserved character, recent examples being My Fair Lady and You’re Beautiful (not saying that those dramas are on the same level or anything, but they have the same breed of second lead)

The writing in BOF was shocking, and I’m really hoping that the writing in Kimi wa Petto will be different (I loved the manga/drama as well) enough to bring out KHJ’s talent as an actor.

I could just be saying this coz I love Kimi wa Petto, but I do think the ‘Rui’ role was difficult for him to pull off in his first acting stint, he’s just not as talented as Oguri Shun.

  143. you were too nice. this guy sucks. he may be a nice person but he didn’t deserve this chance over talented people who actually work hard at acting and love the craft.

  144. I grant you that he did not show any considerable acting talent in BBF, though he was given the most interesting material, character wise, to explore (the reason I kept watching him and grew attached to his face and demeanour, the way one is attached to guilty pleasures). However, subjective pathologies of taste and desire aside, I think he does have an alluring screen presence, there’s something of a solitary handsomeness about him, which raises him slightly above the ‘cute face’ label, or better still, it turns anti-cute in its very sweetness. Now if he trains and educates that formless something which he, in my view, possesses, then it may blossom into something really interesting (a profound sheen, a teasing suaveness?). In this respect he may be good for the part (if he does the work as few have already pointed out ) as I don’t think the part calls for a ‘cute’ guy, but for somebody full of the bewilderment of youth, of ravenous experimentation, and of the terrors arising from youth’s utter conviction of its own indestructibility. And he (the actor) must deliver all these with a light hand, the hand of a painter adding a detail on a canvas.

  145. OMG KHJ I love you and I think you are a great person and I love u in WGM but you need some serious acting classes buddy…..before you start filming this movie…..this a Japanese manga classic……

My observation (besides the fact that he needs to improve his acting skills) is that this guys is being overworked by his company. I mean the guy is promoting SS501 new album , CF, and modeling jobs…..and now a movie this guys is going to spend half of his time in HOSPITAL………is not funny I know but come on when he has been overworked he ends up in the hospital…..

WHAT HAPPEN TO THE REAL YOUNG ACTORS??? I GUESS THAT MY REAL QUESTION…..

by the way JB you have the right to be bias anytime you want this is your site……if people don’t like it too bad….

  146. On a Remake of KWP: Yay!! I hope it covers the whole manga ’cause I absolutely loved it. I hope they adapt it well
On the Actor Dude: Uhhh. Ok, we’ll see how it goes…. best of luck, its a tough role

  147. …i hope everybody could keep an open mind about KHJ’s acting ability (or lack of therein)…cuz if only he’d be given the right project, acting coaches & a less harried schedule…so as to just concentrate on acting alone…i think he could actually make it big!!! he was hilarious in WGM & so beautiful on screen!!! love him to bits!!! looking forward to a better, much improved KHJ!!!

  148. OMG! Love Kimi wa petto! I love, love, koyuki and jun matsumoto! i had so much fun watching this series. Made me laugh and cry….the ending wasnt great…kind of hanging…but i love their chem!

Kim hyun joong as JM’s character? mmm…. i like kim the best among the BOF (coz he is the cutest! haha! i know, very superficial..still…), but am not really sure if he can do a good job or top JM’s crazy acting in KWP…..but I will give this a peek and see…maybe this will turn out to be a good series….

am curious who the lead female will be……

  149. Add:
“The romantic drama unfolds as a woman fashion-magazine editor who is perfect in looks and talents comes to live with a good-looking young man.”

Oh-No!!! A fashion Magazine AGAIN???!!!!! Bleh!!! *makes a face*

Like Amrahncas @125, I like the fact that the lead female was working in a newspaper company, an office dominated by male employees. It adds to the lead female’s strong character(a contrast to her sweetness with the lead male character)…. i mean, being an editor also gives a high, elite, strong character but, editor of a fashion mag is sooo cliche, dated, ….. bleh!!!

Reminds me of the “….with EDGE…” lol!

  150. Ok… I know he didn’t do well on his 1st drama but let’s give this guy a break… Let’s give him a chance to show a different side of a character other than the stiff Jihoo that he potrayed. He might not do as well as the original but he might also not be as bad as most would think and surprise us. If he bombs this drama, then hopefully it will be his wake-up call and quit acting all together. Let’s not bash the guy before the drama even starts…

And Javabeans, I’m really disappointed about this particular blog. I know you and everyone are entitled to their opinion. But I thought you would be bigger than this. You are believed to be a very credible blogger and lots look for your objectivity. You have a very big influence in netizens out there and to stir up something like this is beneath you. I could just imagine the many negative comments he probably is receiving in his personal homepage.

I’m not a big fan of his but I can’t help feel sorry for the guy. He’s just probably someone who’s not letting any opportunities slip by him. So give him a chance to prove himself.

  151. [...] is the article by Dramabeans –> click here [...]

  152. my first reaction is “oh no!”. popularity wins over talent these days. i blame his teenage fan girls and noonas.

  153. Breaking News (veracity yet to be verified):

Su-Ae has apparently been cast as the leading lady!! I love Su-Ae, she is an absolutely gorgeous and mesmerizing actress, and another situational lovestory, I actually think she can guide KHJ. Hopes raised! This may just be a twist on 9E2O (fim version).

    See below:

“This drama better known as Kimi wa petto in Japan, was a very popular drama in 2003 and originally based off a manga (comic). The basic premise is that of a female editor (Su-Ae playing Ji Eun Ee) at a fashion magazine whom finds a good looking young man that ran away from home (Kim Hyun Joong playing Kang In Ho). When she finds him, she invites him to live with her in her home and she calls him “her pet.”

  154. I love Kim Hyun Joong, but his acting is TERRIBLE.

  155. Wow !!! ALOT of ANTIS here =]] I’m Just enjoy the Show =]]

  156. How is this post “disappointing” and how is JB supposed to be “bigger than this”? Man, fans getting so offended by an inoffensive post just shows how unreasonable FANS are, not the blogger. There’s nothing here that’s a bashing comment or unreasonable. We all know KHJ’s acting is not good.

    Rock on, DBers!

  157. I hate people who call others an “ANTI” for having a real reason to think someone’s acting is subpar. Being an anti means you bash for no reason, you make personal slurs or you throw insults because you hate the artist. If you think his acting is great, big whoopdy for you, but don’t call me an anti for thinking he’s godawful when HE IS GODAWFUL.

  158. Jacolian, you are wise!
    What is your blog??

  159. HyunJoong needs to be cast with HwangBO in the lead :P the main girl is older known as the office ultra cool beauty that knows self-defense/kicks asses and is a workaholic……doesn’t that remind you of Hwang Bo?

  160. I’ve seen a lot of his activities captured in Youtube and his BOF drama and I’m totally amazed at KHJ’s attempts to explore what is out there for him . Not many young people have that kind of guts . Let him do all that as lost exuberance of youth is difficult to capture back . I understand the pain he must have gone through being away for 5 months and even more after to promote BOF from the group he painstakingly have lead and cared for . How the poor guy must have been torn between his duties to his group and to his personal dreams .

I agree with what the few others said to give him a chance to try a range of roles .Let us be supportive and not to put all the blame on him in his past acting (I’d say for a first timer It was not bad at all ). By the way , he is not in total control here, remember there is the script and the director who wields vast control . I read somewhere that directors in Korea are very meticulous and they shoot straight for many many hours in the most forbidding season (winter ). They always show their actors immersed in snow or crying and getting drenched in the rain .

As a parent , I would like to give KHJ my warm hugs in support of making his dreams come true -to pursue what he thinks is the best -although also to learn to rest and to relax the natural way . Learn a lot along the way ,not to forget the people who offered you their love and understanding and most of all enjoy your youth . Good luck and have the best of health.

    I

  161. Its not snarky to state your concern. I really enjoyed kimi wa petto more so than hana yori dango so to it would be such a waste to have it ruined with a lead who to be honest has shown very little acting ability.

  162. I am willing to give HJ another chance at a drama, but if he screws up this one, it might be hard to recover. I do think he was by far the worst Rui out of all 3 versions. It was very very hard to want to watch him and he had soo many scenes in BOF. But for me, people should be given another chance, so I don’t have a problem with that. I didn’t think Vic was all that good at Rui either but eventually he did some really decent roles. And his personality in interviews and shows comes across a little bit like HJ back then – a little young and immature but definitely had a fun and cute and quirky side that could be drawn out. Anything is possible – I think he can do it even though his first attempt was not good.

I have seen KWP with Matsumoto Jun back in the day and I only thought it was ok. He was quite young then as well and he was a little over the top but then again I think to play that kind of character, one kinda has to be over the top. I have seen him in WGM and that was interesting… so I think with some hard work and dedication, he could pull it off. I’m not a fan of his, nor do I think he’s particularly good looking, but I do think he’s a decent singer/musican which of course does not translate into anything in terms of acting. I’ll see what happens.

I can see both sides of the opinions here… HJ did do a pretty poor job as a first timer so I think people are justified in their opinion/concern. Everyone has an “equal” opportunity to support or not to support this drama, and we should all respect that.

  163. Wow. Just wow.

His looks do nothing for me, and his acting is even worse. KHJ, you seem like a good guy- why not just stick to your regular job?

  164. KHJ? Seriously? *sniffle*
I mean I like the guy…but Kimi Wa Petto?!
What is with all the MatsuJun dramas Korea’s been remaking lately?
    It’s frustrating and annoying!
There’s a reason kdramas and jdramas are two entirely different genres and people enjoy them as such! aish..

I agree with a previous comment…they should have waited for KDW to get out of the army before doing this if they have to. Haha! He’s the only one I can see in this role…or maybe Hong Ki or Jang Geun Suk. And why another fashion mag? It was a Tokyo newspaper!! I beginning to hate fashion mags in tv now.

Whatever they do I hope they won’t rush it like BOF and ruin it

  165. So many comments, it will take a while to read through them all. I haven’t figured out if this is going to be a film or a drama ?!?

True, Kim Hyun-joong did’t show well in BOF – but I saw him on a variety show and he showed better. He definitely has a sweetness about his personality that could work in KimiWaPet. I thought the direction in BOF stank – so perhaps given better direction he may pull this off.

Jun showed that adolescent/young adult untainted fearlessness that draws me to this dramas. I thought he was memorable and am still an avid fan.

Most of Kim Hyun-joong’s really bad BOF scenes were interacting with the old guy and the girl/woman. I thought he mirrored the HYD actor pretty well, actually.

Let’s hope Kim Hyun-joong does well opposite an older more versatile actress. I think it should be … Kim Sun Ah :)

Thanks for being able to comment -

  166. REALLY?????
who’s the female cast????can’t wait to see it!!
are they going to make more interesting than japanese…got to wait n see…

  167. Kima wa Petto was hilarious but I have serious doubts on this considering KHJ’s acting skills. I mean seriously he needs more acting workshops before jumping into lead roles. No offense but his take on Hanazawa Rui in BBF was as stiff and fish-eyed as one can be. I know he was autistic but I just didn’t get anything from his character. Hopefully he proves everyone wrong.

  168. Okay, since everyone here is bashing poor KHJ — and I did my share as well — I will throw in something positive.

First of all, BOF was a stinking pile of cr-p so maybe we shouldn’t judge actors based on their roles in that…piece of stinking pile of horses—t.

Considering how BOF was shot, how completely senseless and incomprehensible the writing was, and how the writers and PD of BOF were content with just showing off pretty faces, it is hard to gauge what an actor’s ability might be. Not everyone is a Lee Min Ho or a Jang Geun Suk…Some people are natural actors and some are not.

I hope that KHJ does take serious acting lessons, study the craft, evaluate his shortcomings, and really try hard to do well. I think I recall from BOF days that he would call his acting coach for advice — and that kind of commitment and drive should be rewarded.

I don’t think he is relying on his good looks! He is a very intelligent man, from what I have gathered. I admit to having a strange kind of crush on him and have watched most of the subbed material on him. So I think he is sincere in his efforts. His management people, on the other hand, might be using him more for his looks…

So all the best to KHJ!

  169. @131 matsuzy – yeah that is more like Momo!! :-) What a cutie!

What does it say on the sign?
    http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m6/zycerlyn/4526_113834115808_76437470808_26334.jpg

First KHJ was compared to Oguri Shun, and honestly, most actors would come up short there. Now he will be compared to Matsujun. If he (or his management) really wanted (him) to do more acting, why not do a role that nobody had done before? It’s brutal this way. :-(

  170. After the destruction of Domyoji character (previously acted by Jun Matsumoto i the Jdrama version) in the Kdrama version BOF by a non actor called Lee min ho (crybaby weak vasool unnatutaly funny and violent Domyoji) This momo turn to be destroyed in an upcoming Kmovie with another terrible actor who acted too in this S..t drama, Booze Over Flowers called KHJ.
However momo character maybe easier for KHJ to act compare to Rui character (silent calm cold rich, elegant but at the same time imposing, and not a sissy) but the problem here is : can KHJ be momo (not feeling he acts but he is the character ) ? Indeed Jun didn’t acted momo but he was momo (like he was Domyoji Tsukasa in HYD or Sawada in Gokusen…)

AND PLEASE NOM KITTEY STOP INSULTING JGS BY SAYING HIS NAME IN THE SAME SENTENCE THAN LMH. LMH A NATURAL ACTOR ?? LOL HE ACTED NOTHING LIKE DOMYOJI IN THIS S….Y DRAMA ! Can’t act funny, can’t act violent, overacted crying….

  171. Ahhhhhh noooooooooo

I love kimi wa petto, it’s so cute and fun and silly…no way in hell can he pull that kind of character off.

  172. I personally would have chosen Heechul.

But people lets give Hyun Joong our support , and pray to GOD!, that he doesn’t murder the fond memories we have of our “Kimi Wa Petto”.
If we’re really lucky maybe the kiss scene will still rock as hard as it did with Jun.

    ” Momo”

  173. Erm..wow

    So many comments..=]

I’ve heard of kimi wa petto before but I’ve never watched it and i’ve heard of the manga Tramps Like Us but i never put 2 and 2 together =/

But from the sypnosis, honestly I thought Hong Ki would suit this role but imho, i thought Soo Ae would be the kick-ass female lead too.. :S

But i just thought there would be an obvious age gap between the two.

I also thought KHJ was lifeless as Ji Hoo, maybe he was just exhausted…

He was definitely the stiffest actor out of all of the BBF cast, but the writing didn’t do any justice either. I mean Ga Eul was my favourite character but she turned clingy. However, I still love KSE as an actress =D

But let’s give KHJ a chance, eh? =)

@ Lily, please don’t try to force your opinions on others =/

  174. Wow, feeling the response on this post alone….this remake drama is has some huge hype!

  175. Sorry if I sounded harsh but it amazes me when people still put JGS (who can forget himself to act his characters like it’s showed in HGD, YAB, HJY, Happy Life, Baby and I…) on the same level as “actors” like LMH when the latter (so called Domyoji) was nothing like the character (prince charming dancing in boysbands, afraid of everything, try too hard to be funny) and was only good at showing overacted crying.

  176. I read a day or so ago that this news was false…can anyone clarify that properly please?

  177. DB: may I please have the pic of KHN that you have posted. OMG, He is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cuteeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee in the pic.
It will be for my personal collection. **blush**

  178. I think we are all on drunk on you’re Beautiful cos loads have sad JGS for the role as the cute adorable puppy boy. I can’t see it myself, as much as i loooove him and would love to see him real soon – i don’t think it would suit.

The role is an odd one, someone like one of the boys from Shinee – that sort of look, i’m not suggesting we subject ourselves to a “idol attempt at acting” ordeal or anything.

  179. i agree with Chocolatetree…if Jang Geun Suk is chosen to be the leading actor then i’ll def. be excited about this Dont get me wrong…I loved KHJ in BOF but he might not be the one for the role. Well i guess we should give him a 2nd chance…what do we know..maybe he made improvements on his acting skills…

  180. Kimi Wa Petto has a special place in my heart as it was my first J-Dorama.
Did I mention I am absolutely furious that they are making a remake??!!!
Not so much on the fact of the remaking itself but just going by the casting of Kim Hyun Joong… I don’t think they are taking this seriously enough.

It was a wonderful drama and it portrayed the gender prejudice that still exists for the women of Japan along with fun love stuff in a different way.
With the announcement of this remake, I have a bad feeling its going to be “poppified”. As in bubble gum candy boys over flowers.

Shoot me if that ever happens…

I know remakes hardly ever do as well as the original simply because it isn’t the original. I know I am biased in that sense. However if this drama doesn’t produce some good writing and strong leads.. well, its best to leave it to the imagination.

  181. @ 170 and 175 lilly,
I have to disagree, although I am amused by the intensity of emotions in this thread…MONTHS after BOF last aired :-) . Does say something about why BOF was such hit — it hit a nerve.

Lee Min Ho showed that even in the face of sucky writing, even suckier story lines, and super sucky everything else, he could still get into character and do it justice, despite the extreme suckiness of the character he was playing.

My point is that under the worst of circumstances, LMH showed that he could at least act…

Jang GS — I have seen enough of his work by now (including his very cute movies) to know that the boy (man?) can act. He is definitely talented and in a league of his own.

Lee Min Ho has not been in the industry as long as JGS, but what he has done so far does point to his having some natural talent.

Seriously, we should direct our anger at the writers and directors of BOF.

I think we are taking out too much of our anger on the poor actors.

  182. Sumire is supposed to be taller than Momo…

  183. MOMO!!!!!
Of all the people they could have cast… Hell, even I make a better Momo!!!

  184. @ 181
    1) Actors like JGS, MGY, ect… are at another level than “actors” like KHJ, LMH…
This is a fact because mainly as you said the formers have experience (they have acted different roles since they are in the industry) what the latter lack.
    2) Alright you disagree with what I said and you tell me the script and the character’s writting sucked but at the same time you say LMH showed talent, maybe. Yet the man acted a totally different character was not Domyoji (maybe it was himself, even perma was starting to disappear ). Gu Hye Sun characted writting sucked too (her acting either) but I can’t help but admit the girl cried good even much better than LMH (he sucked at the airport scene or at epi 5 when he was about to knock the wall) and I can’t remember a memorable funny acting of him…

  185. a) I LOVE KIMI WA PETTO.
    b) I LOVE HANA YORI DANGO.
    c) I LOVE SS501 (when theyre not singing live)
    d) IM NOT AT ALL IMPRESSED WITH HIS ACTING.
    e) I HOPE THE KIMI WA PETTO DOESNT TURN OUT A DOWNER LIK BOF DID FOR ME.

  186. @183 Melissa
    Thats so funny!

  187. I can see why he doesn’t want to fade from acting. I mean Se7en’s drama was a flop. BOF was a huge success and he received so many popularity awards for his role. I mean his ego isn’t going to say.. you know what.. let’s stop now. Even if his acting is only limited, he’s not going to stop ..his pretty face and popularity is going to take him places.

Didn’t I read somewhere that Su-Ae was the lead actress?

  188. @181
I disagree with you. Why blame the casting crew? I know they want hugely popular actors for certain role in a drama to boost that drama popularity. But like JAVABEANS said, KHJ should have realized after BBF, he’s not cut out for it (like 7 and stick to his regular job). OR go to a intense training camp for acting. Seriously, no offense, He’s one reason, I stop watching BBF after episode 2 or 3, can’t even remember. I just want to have good old memory of that series and stick on re-watching the Taiwanese (season 1only) version and the best Japanese version of the drama. As for MOMO!!! there goes another good japanese adaptation ruined! I’ll wait and see though, maybe KJH took all our comments to heart and did some intense training. So I’ll keep an open mind and wait. After all he’s new to acting but then again so is JUNG YONG HWA of “YB” but that boy can act !

  189. # 184 lilly,

Isn’t that a bit harsh? I mean, I’m not a huge BoF as well, but I admit that I was part of that fancraze and I’m glad that it’s way over. I will have to agree with Nom_Kitteh here, and say that it is the writer and the director’s fault why BoF turned out this way. Actually no, make it mostly the writer’s fault. I still admire the crew though for working really hard, but it just so happened that the drama turned out into a mess.

JGS just happened to be on the spotlight first than LMH, as his dramas and movies were popular. Unlike with LMH, he has been doing some dramas before (2 leads I think and some were a side role) but he didn’t have the luck to shine into stardom with those. BoF gave him the big break that he really needed, for I think he did very well as Gu Jun Pyo. And can we please not compare Gu Jun Pyo with Domyouji Tsukasa, as they are different entities? I love HanaDan, I’m a huge fan of this Japanese series, and I think that the Japanese adaptation really defined the manga characters. With BoF, this is a Korean production, so of course, they would deviate a bit, with the writing and the characters. Sadly, the writing was very horrible, for it did not capture the true essence of Hana Yori Dango. I think Min Ho was amazing for he totally personified Gu Jun Pyo. Like he owned that character, and he’s the only one who can do it, same as there’s no other Domyouji like MatsuJun.

Alright, let’s say that LMH is no where near JGS’s level. But I think with a bit of experience in the field he can definitely hone his skills. I saw that in BoF, and I just hope that you can see it in his future dramas.

With regards to KHJ, I have nothing to say. He didn’t impress me at all in BoF. Sometimes I even think that Shin Woo of You’re Beautiful should’ve been Yoon Ji Hoo. And sometimes I think that there should’ve been another actor to play the Korean version of Rui.

Haven’t seen Kimi wa Petto, and I’m not planning to; although I did hear that Jun played his part really well. Knowing that some manga and drama adaptations are being made, I’m afraid that this might be a new trend in Kdrama. Adapting BoF was understandable; it’s HanaDan. But adapting these mangas into a Kdrama, heh. I wonder if they’ll do Hana Kimi next. I’m curious.

  190. if Lee Dong Wook was younger he would just perfect for this role…but Kim Hyun Joong? I mean, he’s handsome but we always had the same expression on his face during BOF…he never showed emotions…even when we was “happy” he looked sad/cold!

Kimi wa petto is also one of my favs, I don’t think how am I going to support this project after watching Matsumoto Jun doing such a lovely role and obviously been force to compare…

I just can’t picture KHJ been that cute and bubblish! I hope he get some acting lessons ASAP or the press and fans will kill him!

  191. I really think that this is an amazing role for KHJ! wayyyy better than ji hoo! i mean ji hoo was totally not him, and he had to be all quiet and reserved… and if i know anything about KHJ, it’s that he’s SO NOT reserved!! :) so this cute role is perfect for his 4D-ness and randomness that he shows so much! just act natural oppa!

  192. “And can we please not compare Gu Jun Pyo with Domyouji Tsukasa, as they are different entities?”

That’s why I says “maybe he acted himself” (the weakest Domyoji)
Indeed like KHJ who ruined Rui (his acting was so fake that he became the most open and smily Rui). At the end I start feeling a little more sympathy for KHJ here. Indeed he does an as bad job (maybe worst) as LMH but he is the most bashed (I admit including by me)…

  193. lilly,

I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you said he acted as the weakest Domyouji. That, I will not disagree. I think as well that the character was very weak, very un-Domyouiji or un-Jun Pyo like, but I think it’s not Lee Min Ho’s fault for acting like that because he’s just following what the script and the director says. In the first few episodes the writing was good; but on the next ones there were a lot of character inconsistencies, not just with Jun Pyo.

  194. KHJ is the wrong man for the role. Kimi Wa Petto is one of my favorite mangas of all time. Momo is cute, SHORT, smart , and funny. KHJ should really choose projects where his Lack of Skill wont show. I really hope they at least choose a Tall actress to play Sumair, though where they would find one taller then KHJ I don’t know.

    p.s.
Someone like Jang Keun Suk would be much better. He’s a bit tall, but , Who cares, since this boy can ACT.

  195. Shouldn’t they have casted Lee MinHo… if they wanted to cast MastuJun’s counterpart??

  196. This is a lead role! I hope he will prove critics wrong…..
there’s room for improvement from BOF…he’s lucky to land this plum role!

maybe additional reason to watch this drama is to check his acting..even this reason will bring viewers in..time to see if he can bring viewers as main lead!

  197. Lee MIn Ho as Momo would have been perfect he can do cute, adorable :D

  198. HEY javabeans! i think that you should be a bit more optimistic about this since honestly im expecting KHJ to do a really great job
especially since his personality in real life is completely different than Jihoo’s character and his real life personality is really playful, hilarious, and 4D so
yeah i think he will be perfect in Kimi wa petto

  199. Yes. Although whether he really can act well is up for dispute, it 100% fact that Lee Min Ho is a better actor than KHJ. Just how the balls rolls.

In fact, I’m over my initial hilarity enough to see how unfair it is that *he* is getting this job, instead of a talented actor, of which there has to be many, right? What is Lee Min Ho doing ,exactly, eating choco pies and playing wii??

I hope this movie has lots of intense, emotional scenes in it…happy, sad, confused, whatever! It’ll be unintentional comedy. :D

    There. Gleeful snarkiness. ^.^

  200. poor KHJ, please prove your detractors wrong that’s all i hope for.

  201. Ack! Love KHJ as the broody, pretty boy in SS501 but can’t see him do a better job than MJ in the original.

Edit: No wait! If he acts like his real laidback, humorous self, i.e. the way he’s been coming across in televised interviews, it may work really well. I mean, look at him! He is such a cutie! xD

  202. They should cast HWANG BO as Sumire!! They would work really well together. Im not sure if he could do it with anyone else, because of his personality, but he kind of opened up to Hwang bo.

  203. the whole brouhaha over bof was ridiculous!! i preferred hana yori dango anytime. the acting and storyline of bof was bad. the japanese version was so much better! now they are taking kimi wa petto and putting their korean version…hmmm i feel a dread …. just my opinion…no hard feelings!

  204. First: People should stop bashing on DB and other users who have a different opinion…Really, one can say whatever they feel like, that’s why it’s called an OPINION not a fact…geez

Second: There is no way Kim Hyun-joong can beat MatsuJun’s acting (though I would love to take that back once I see his acting)

Third: Many other BETTER actors could’ve been cast for this role, but once again the director cares about the popularity of the show..sign…

Fourth: Is it me or are there too many k-dramas that were based on mangas? What are they going to remake Gokusen, Hana Kimi, etc. next too?Aren’t there any other NEW stories to be filmed…

    ok…I’m done

  205. “p.s.
Someone like Jang Keun Suk would be much better. He’s a bit tall, but , Who cares, since this boy can ACT ”

    i totally agree with this!

  206. khj has a great sense of humor …..just watch him with hwangbo in wgm give him chance……

  207. I ABSOLUTELY Loved Kimi Wa Petto!!!!!!
    Matsujun was perfect as Momo.
KHJ as Momo may just be adorable. Best news all day ever!!!!!!!!

  208. i really wish that jang geun suk would be cast instead. jang geun suk would totally be able to pulll it off! he’s sooo cute like a pet!

  209. hi arashi fan here :D i’m the 130th person who commented XD
actually im really against the idea f remaking KWP ne!! i don’t think that anybody can live up to jun’s version of momo.. but when i saw this ( http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m6/zycerlyn/4526_113834115808_76437470808_26334.jpg) picture of hongki i really can’t help but think that he’s absolutely what were looking for!! i really wouldn’t mind if it was him!! i can definitely see him as momo just as i did with jun! i hope im really not offending anybody but can’t we do anything to replace KHJ??

@169 artemis: THANKS!!! :D but to be honest i can’t read what’s written there.. XD

  210. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m6/zycerlyn/4526_113834115808_76437470808_26334.jpg

here’s the pic again.. sorry the link doesn’t seem to be working.. XD

  211. Well, I’m not going to be fair and generous and loving to the poor hardworking boy. I think he is a horrid actor, and I won’t watch him wreck one of my favorite mangas. I couldn’t make it past Episode 5 of BBF because of his bug-eyed woodenness, and I see absolutely no reason why I must be kind in my opinion.
If you like him, that’s great. As for me, I’ll cut him a deal; I won’t make him read my dull technical manuals that I slave over, and he won’t make me watch the bletcherous acting that he spends so much time on. We will both be happy in our ignorance.
So if you want to bash someone, bash me instead of JB – she is much nicer than I am.

  212. @ matsuzy :

I agree with u, i think Hongky is really like puppy boy……..:D

  213. Bad actor but I’m still looking forward to it.
Let’s give him a chance : acting isn’t easy and most of the actors weren’t good when they started.
Anyway I wanna see the Korean version of this manga ;)

  214. I just love Kim Hyun jonng, can’t wait to see his drama which is gonna shut the mouths of his critics, Saranghae oppa fighthing, I’m sure that the drama ll be sky rocketing success!!!!!!!!!
    ~Regards from India.

  215. Sigh where is Lee Min Ki when you need him? Perfect blend of smouldering manliness and little-boy charisma! To top it all off, he’s played quite a few quirky and fun characters (Mixed-up Investigative Agency) as well as lead roles in romantic comedies (Dalja’s Spring). Cast him already!

  216. Whoaaaaaa…….. I’ll pet him in a heartbeat!! give him to me! … :-)

  217. @215 lee minki! i agree so much, how could the casting team didnt think of him
i love the 4D leader of ss501, but im sorry he’ll wreck another fave drama of mine,

can’t kdrama creator be creative and create their own script? if i want to see ‘tramps like us’, i’ll just watch the original ver

  218. I’m going to have to go watch Kimi wa Petto now just to see what the hype is all about. But the news that KHJ is acting again just scares me. Really? Is he not doing well enough with SS501? I think Japan is going to have to have words with Korea about who they choose to remake their jdramas. :D

  219. i’ve seen almost all of the variety shows hyun joong’s been in, even before i knew about him, and my instinct is telling me that this is a role that would suit him.
can’t wait for him to prove everyone wrong. i mean this without sarcasm, but i can’t wait for him to prove javabeans wrong.

  220. sigh. again, a drama is mentioned in a comment thread. again i get addicted to said drama.

i am now 4 eps into kimi wa petto; it’s totally adorable (even though matsumoto jun looks a little too much like mike myers for my taste.) i haven’t gotten to the part where momo shows his deep side yet, but from what i’ve seen so far, khj would do a fine job, especially since it’s a movie, which means that a) it’s shorter and b) there is a little more wiggle room for reshoots, etc. the big problem is that he’s too tall! he’s close to 6 feet – how are they going to work the script around that? and i read elsewhere that su ae is going to play his owner – i rather like her and think she will do a fine job, but she’s like 5 inches shorter. that changes the whole thing around somehow…

but from what i have seen, outside of bbf, at least, he’s a charming, funny, amusing, goofy, adorable guy, and if he doesn’t have to spend the whole time moping about, he could be quite good in this. the logistics of his height, the unfairness of a world in which cute pop idols get favorite stories recycled for them, and the sheer joy of snarking aside, that is.

  221. I have not read all the above posts. However, I would say that we may all be surprised when this drama comes to town. I have also not seen the Japanese version.

Hyun Joon is a laid back ,very witty and intelligent kind of guy. If you watch him in a variety show he seems to be shy and not mixing in but suddenly he says something and everyone is howling with laughter . Also he can cook and knows how to find stuff they need in that show called (I think) ‘HAPPY SUNDAY’.

He is older than when he did his first acting in BOF and I rather think he will be more assured and probably doing a role he can get into with more enjoyment.

I could be wrong but I am very hopeful.

  222. As much as i love Hyun Joong..i dun think he suits dis role of Momo-chan..i watched d j-drama n it was absolutely one of my fav..but in dis drama there were a lot of scenes when Momo-chan was treated as a pet *in literal way, i believe* n i can’t imagine HJ being treated as a pet..he is cute and funny *and weird, if i must add* but his humour n cuteness IMO is not aegyo (acting cute) like what Momo-chan did..he’s funny bcoz he is blunt-spoken n said anything that crossed his mind at dat time..it juz happen that due to his 4D personality his way of thinking is kinda different from ordinary ppl..n dat makes him funny..i certainly can’t see him acting cute though..*myb it’s just my own definition of aegyo..i dunno..*

I’d prefer Hongki for d role anyway..i can certainly imagine him being Momo-chan.. *myb dis is due to YB’s addiction anyway..=p*

But if HJ will indeed play dis role..i wish him luck! I’ll certainly be watching as i want to see how he potrayed Momo..but i won’t expect much..

  223. Annyeong guys,
Guys, give him a chance. We might be surprised if he could pull this through.
KHJ, I love you so much, you are so cute but just take all comments with a pinch of salt. Love you….

  224. loved him in WGM but blah in BOF so if he’s really doing this, i’m hoping he gets paired w/ hwangbo again coz they seem to have good chemistry and maybe he won’t be awkward anymore since its not his first time acting/working w/ her. they were voted as best couple by netizens as well during that time so maybe there’s more to this project than what all the other commentators just said. so for now i’m keeping my fingers crossed and wait as to what happens next-positive thinking everyone-hehehe^_^

  225. I love KHJ in WGM and although Hwang Bo is not really into acting, i positively wish they will be paired in this movie if it will push through. One, it wouldn’t be as stressful when they do work together since they know each other already-they have good chemistry in WGM and really left an unfinished story among fans. This will be just another story in a bigger story like the “To the World!” mystery they have created. Really so profound and only people who have watched and analized the dialogues they have in WGM will understand. Think positive always as they have conveyed in WGM.

  226. i don’t see anything wrong with it.
im actually pretty looking forward to it.

but PLEASE cast a good female lead.

  227. On WGM, KHJ natural personality fits this role’s personality to the T – cute, lovable, funny, etc. One could argue that by revealing the opposite character in BBF would be GOOD acting ability. This remake will be a must-see!

  228. ammm i think that kim hyun joong should make this drama.. the story is cute and even if it seems that the character of the guy doesn’t fit him i think it would be an occasion to dimonstrate to all of us that he is really good actor.. i already know that he’s talented but i want to see it one more time in other drama..

  229. I don’t see why it is impossible. I’m looking forward to watch it.
He’s pretty funny & cute. And the stiffness in BOF seemed to be placed there on purpose too within his role, wasn’t it ? as part of his supposedly rigid character following the parents accident in BOF ?? which was why he’s supposed to be different & more quiet compared to the other 3 boys.

He’s pretty funny in interviews, even in WGM ..
so I personally think it’s going to work well. After all, he’s people’s favourite for a reason.

  230. Just make sure the lead actress is pretty, so that they can match, lol.
Because if anything, mismatch in casting is going to be the key factor that can ruin the whole thing.

  231. i think kim hyun joong can be good at pulling off his role as momo. he was really cute and fun in We Got Married. he remarked once that his character in BBF/BOF is very unlike his real personality…. maybe momo who is the exact opposite may be an “easier” role for him?

  232. I totally agree with you JB, at first i was (like all others who simply fell in love withKHJ in BOF) was looking forward in seeing him again but then i realize something is OFF with this person, since i finished watching BOF middle of this yr and researched on this person a thousand times(devoting my sleeping hours just to see him in all his activities after BOF). I came to realize that he only have looks (SORRY). YES HE HAD SOME SOLO IN SINGING AND HE CAN MOVE BUT YOU KNOW WHAT HE GOT SOME ATTITUDE PROBLEM………………….recently i have watched him on some variety shows and he does not even smile often…..is he like that or just so dense or just in that character of JI HOO….imagine u r in a variety sow and everything is funny and yet he does not laugh or smile…………….something is OFF. KHJ i love u to pieces but id rather have someone THE likes of LEE HONG KI doing this project because he can act and can definetly fit in the charater in my pet

  233. are u serious ? did you seen in the variety shows ? i think you’re totally wrong.. he smiles a lot.. i watch them all. and even if sometimes he’s really serious.. there is time when he die of hapiness.. so please dont say things which are not true.. and if you jnow he’s a hardworker.. even of it’s difficult he’d do anything to reach his goal.. that’s one of the reason ‘cus i admire him too..

  234. Hey I’m sooooo looking forward to Hyun Joong in this Korean remake of Kimi Wa Petto. I think he should be able to fit in this role well. Those who have watched “We Got Married” will probably agree with me. I’m soooo hoping Hwang Bo will be the female lead! They have lots of chemistry together!

  235. i think, lee hongki would be good as well for this role , after seeing him in YOURE BEAUTIFUL..cute, funny and joyful!! :) :)

  236. I’m not in the position to react about this because:

    1. I never finished BOF so I can’t judge Hyun Joong’s acting based on just 7 episodes.
    2. I never watched Kimi Wa Petto
    3. Matsujun is like my JGS of Japan lol. He is the first Asian guy, I totally fell in love with <333 so I would definitely say Matsujun is better(best).

SO… in the end, I'm just gonna watch it to see if its a success or a failure. haha :D BUT if i'm going to pick someone who can be 'Momo', definitely JGS, I always thought they were similar. Domyouji and Hwang Tae Kyung are like brothers! o.O

  237. I could see him in kimi wa petto. I look forward to it :)

ivych: the reason he may seem off to you is because he is 4D!

That just makes him more attractive in my view.

  238. Duh! He’s GORGEOUS! No matter how much he will or will not suck in his scenes, people will tune in to watch the show anyways.

Especially teen girls. They rule the world now. That’s why the sucky Twilight franchise takes in so much money.

  239. At some point, I agree with you KHJ was a replica of Se7en during those times where all those SS501 BTS diaries leak, however a turn for better happened ever since he did We Got Married. I suppose a human side of him being documented w/ Hwang Bo shot his stardom up and beyond after that, and those dimensions claim more than what Se7en has offered the world so there’s that difference.

There’s a formula here… catch on? I think there are lingering feelings from JoongBo fans to see KHJ in another “older woman+younger guy” acting relationship. I suppose fans are waiting to see more sides of KHJ where he lacks not shown to Hwang Bo to offer in this new role. Time for Hyun Joong to feed those appetites.

  240. KHJ is not that bad ya’ noe? He’s actually quite a quirky person… And he does NOT only have looks please. I went o youtube searching for him and all, and he actually has quite a funny personality. Oh, before he’s involved in this entertainment industry, he’s quite stiff and he even have to practise smiling. But now, look at his smile! he’s not that bad. So, just hope for the best for his cast in Kimi Wa Pet. ^^

    Cheers

  241. And anyway, his cool personality totally pulled of in BOF! no matter what u guy says. Especially when he potrays his pain! urgh… please pepz… Don’t be too judgemental on him. His acting is not as bad as what you guys think.

  242. forget it everyone… Kim Hyun Joong has declined in acting in it already.
    http://community.livejournal.com/omonatheydidnt/2420539.html
good for you all who despises him in his acting skills.
Sad for those who’s waiting to see his boyish face as MoMo…

  243. he is sooo handsome kin hyun joong i love you
