2012 KBS Drama Awards
by | December 31, 2012 | 257 Comments

And closing out the year-end drama awards is KBS, who didn’t stray too far off the beaten path. The big winner tonight was You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly, the big ratings pull for the station this year. Taking home the Daesang was its star, Kim Nam-joo, who continues her reign as queen of the small screen. She certainly deserves to fill a room with trophies just for her fabulousness alone, but that also means there were no big shakeups this year. Nice Guy was the other big winner of the night, taking home top awards for its actors.

It’s funny how I always think each broadcaster had so many shows on its roster, but once you split them up, they always turn out to be such a small pool. But by and large KBS had a great year with dramas that were both popular and critically-acclaimed, so their banner shows (You Who Rolled In, Nice Guy, Gaksital, Equator Man) all had plenty of trophies to split among them.

Yoo Joon-sang & Kim Nam-joo (You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly),
Writer Award: Park Ji-eun (You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly)

Kim Nam-joo took home the top honor for her hit drama You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly, but more importantly, she wins the red carpet. I don’t think she’d have it any other way. The see-through black lace was all over the red carpet this year, but none of the looks quite hit it home for me until I saw this dress. The detailing is so playful and girly, but overall the look is sexy and chic. I’m not even sure which I love more — the front or the back. There’s just nothing quite like commanding attention, even when you’re walking away.

Yoo Joon-sang won a top acting award playing Kim Nam-joo’s hubby in You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly. He arrived with his MC co-host Lee Jong-seok, and even did a quick-change during the show. He looks dapper and adorably nerdy in both tuxes, just the way I like him.

Song Joong-ki was born to walk the red carpet. He walks like he owns the joint, and why shouldn’t he? The Nice Guy star took home an Excellence Award as well, and looks so confident and pretty, I just can’t stand it.

Moon Chae-won scored an Excellence Award right alongside her Nice Guy co-star, but what on earth is she wearing? Sigh, she’s one of the prettiest young — I repeat, young — and talented actresses of her generation, and she looks like she’s dressed for church. She’ll be the prettiest girl in church, but I’d much rather see her be the sexiest starlet on the red carpet.

At least her co-star Park Shi-yeon dressed it up. Though I can’t say I’m that impressed with such a simple black gown from her. There’s just way too much black and white this year, and the dress itself isn’t anything to write home about. But damn if she doesn’t rock a dress, this woman. I love her sleek hair, her gold jewelry, and how she makes a black dress sexy by being in it.

Park Shin-hye came to pick up an award for her Drama Special Don’t Worry, I’m a Ghost, and doesn’t stray from the evening’s theme either. I swear, someone must’ve written Black & White Ball on the KBS invitations this year. She looks beautiful and is strutting confidently, which I love. I wish desperately her dress was a bright beautiful color, because she looks fantastic in the cut.

So. Cute. They came together? Han Chae-ah was the night’s luckiest girl on the red carpet, when she showed up with not one, but two hot dates — her Gaksital co-stars Joo-won and Park Ki-woong on either arm. I wish I could shoot that orange animal that died on top of Park Ki-woong’s lovable adorable head, because that’s pretty much the only thing wrong with this picture. His suit’s not the most flattering cut either, but gah, he’s so cute I can hardly care. Joo-won looks flawless, which makes me wonder if his stylist is a genius or if he just looks good in everything, which… no fair. Han Chae-ah’s dress is another white in a sea of white, but she looks pretty and happy. Not hard to guess why.

Jin Sae-yeon looks fresh-faced and adorable, and she’s literally smiling like this in every picture. It makes me love her a little, even though her acting leaves much to be desired. If you can believe it, this is actually one of the more colorful looks on the red carpet, and though it sort of reminds me of a prom dress, it seems perfectly suited for Jin Sae-yeon — not entirely memorable, but sweet and pretty.

New husband and father-to-be Uhm Tae-woong just looks so happy these days. He took home an acting award for Equator Man, and looks as winsome as ever. And his tux is pinstriped! That pretty much made my day. It’s crisp and dapper and a little fun, and he looks like he’s having a great time.

His co-star Lee Bo-young is having a great year with two big dramas, but I really wish she’d worn something more interesting. She looks beautiful and it’s a beautiful dress… that I’ve seen about ten thousand times. Also, it’s white. What’s with the white?

Lee Sang-yoon, her co-star in the hit weekend drama My Daughter Seo-young, looks tall and lean in classic black. I do want to straighten his bowtie and stop his hair from swooping to one side, but maybe it’s a concept.

Park Hae-jin (My Daughter Seo-young) is lookin’ snazzy. I love it when stars strut, and he totally had that swagger down. I kind of want it in motion, so I can put it on repeat while I’m doing my hair and makeup every time I go out.

Lee Kwang-soo (Nice Guy) is the total opposite, still hunching and walking funny because he feels too tall. But that’s his dorky charm, and that smile would melt even the coldest heart. His jacket has this brocade detailing that’s actually eye-catching and fun because he pulls it off with his quirky charm.

His co-star Choco (Lee Yubi) is wearing yet another white dress, but I love this look on her because it’s the exact kind of princessy dress you’d want to wear when you finally got to step on that red carpet for the first time. The young actress looks just the part — bright-eyed, bushy-tailed, and glowing.

Lee Jong-seok came to MC the event, but also got to take home an award for his heartbreaking turn in School 2013. His coat is so King-of-Dramas-Anthony-esque, especially when he oh-so-casually drapes it over his shoulders. But he looks even better without, in just the sleek black tux. I can’t wait to see what he’ll do after this breakout role. But first: MOAR SCHOOL.

His co-star Park Se-young did some kind of magic quick-change, because she went to the SBS Awards too, which were going on at the same friggin’ time. Her dress actually has a hint of color, even though it’s pretty damn close to white. But the cut is flowy and beautiful, and she looks fantabulous in it.

Yoona came to pick up an award for Love Rain, and wears a sweet pink poofy dress that seems perfectly suited for her. It’s another of those dresses that we’ve seen about a hundred times, and she looks rather like a wedding topper, made of pink whipped cream roses. Her hair looks shampoo-commercial perfect though, doesn’t it?

Suzy’s look is far more interesting, not that it makes it right for the occasion. I actually like the dress — it’s different, flattering, and fun despite being black. But it’s also not very formal, and looks a lot like a pencil skirt with a top. Just too plain for the year-end red carpet, even with feathers. But I love her simple ponytail and fresh-faced makeup. Adorable.

Seo In-gook! Take off your coat! I get that it’s freezing. But damn, if the actresses can do it wearing little more than a tissue’s worth of fabric on their bare skin, you can manage to take off your peacoat. You’re pretty, and I love your confidence, but I didn’t come to see you bundled. I came to see you rock an outfit.

Thank you, Oh Yeon-seo (You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly) — your splash of color was a godsend. Beautiful, eye-catching, and flattering from head to toe. It’s not hard to stand out when everyone else is wearing black and white, but she looks amazingly pulled together on top of it all.

Park Jung-ah (My Daughter Seo-young) in another of the sheer black dresses. Ho-hum.

Namgoong Min (Drama Special Still Photograph) looks nice, but a little stiff. He’s not doing a whole lot of smiling, and looks a little more dressed down than the average man here. Mostly though, I just want him to take his hand out of his pocket in every goddamn picture. Do you even want to be here?

Wang Ji-hye’s dress is doing too many things for me to love it — it’s a minidress, and it’s not, it’s lace, it’s chiffon, it’s all things and not anything. But it does have the cool effect of giving her this dramatic train while she’s walking, and in some shots it just looks like one whole dress with a huge slit, which looks great. It’s just that on closer look, it doesn’t come together the way you thought it would. She wears it with confidence though, which goes a long way.

Yay, Lee Beom-soo (IRIS 2). Anything is better when you’re present. I wish you’d shave that mustache because it kinda creeps me out, but otherwise you’re looking amazing, walkin’ with a skip in your step, and wavin’ like you won all things.

Jang Hyuk and Lee Da-hae came together on the IRIS 2 train as well, but they look more like they’re leading the funeral train. Seriously, who died and why is everyone dressed for mourning today? And turtlenecks… I HATE turtlenecks. He’s wearing one, and she’s turned one into a dress. And I don’t understand why.

Nam Ji-hyun picked up a Youth Acting award for her drama special Girl Detective Park Hae-sol, and though her dress isn’t my favorite (I actually think the blue stripes are more interesting than the black lace), it’s a cute minidress for a young rookie, and I like the overall effect.

Lee Hee-jun is currently being a bad wizard in Jeon Woo-chi, but he’s here to pick up an award for You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly. It’s nice to see him him looking sleek and sharp, and well, not evil.

His co-star Jo Yoon-hee also picked up an award, in another white dress. She looks pretty and happy, and the dress gives her a nice statuesque silhouette. It’s just a lot like every other dress ever. Pretty but safe.

Kim Dong-wan picked up an acting award for his daily, Be Strong Mr. Kim, looking chiseled and perfectly dressed.

Choi Jung-yoon for some reason decided to add twenty years to her age. I don’t care how cold it is. The fur ages you. At least the dress has an interesting graphic element to it, even if it’s still rather matronly and — yet again — black and white.

Noh Young-hak won a youth award for King’s Dream and looks so adorable in blue that I just want to take him home. Someone hem his pants though.

Choi Yoon-young (My Daughter Seo-young) in another white dress, looking bridal. I do love her bob and headband, though I wish it were more ornate for the occasion.

Do Ji-won (I Miss You) in another of the black see-through dresses that don’t look put-together. Is it mesh? Is it polka dots? And what is going on with your right sleeve?

Aw, it’s little Kim Tak-gu Oh Jae-mu (here for Be Strong Mr. Kim)! So little. So cute in a tux.

Shim Lee-young (You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly) wears one of the night’s rare spots of color, though I really wish the cut of the dress were more interesting and more flattering. It just looks like a pageant dress — look, it even has the space for the sash, all ready ‘n’ waiting.

Jin Kyung was in both of KBS’s two big dramas this year: Nice Guy and You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly. I wish she’d take the jacket off, but at least she’s wearing gold.

Yoo Da-in picked up an award for her drama special Ordinary Love with Yeon Woo-jin. I’m happy she’s wearing red, but the dress itself is put together all wrong. It looks like it was once a bigger dress, pinned to her smaller frame. And it drives me crazy how washed out she looks.

Ajusshi! What happened to you? Kim Sang-ho was also in You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly, and I don’t know if coming to the awards was a last-minute decision for him, but he looks like he rolled out of bed unexpectedly and landed on the red carpet. Dude, I know you play this type of character, but put on a tie, and brush your hairs. All ten of them. It makes a difference.

    Thank you!

Yeah, thanks GF, this recap is so hilarious and just wan to know your thoughts? What dramas and actors were you rooting for?

I have a few questions: Javabeans said about these awards (at least the ones from the broadcasting stations) that there are mostly about politics, and I am curious about that and I would like to understand it better. Another blogger compared it to a company giving prizes to the employees that made/brought the biggest sale numbers.

My understanding of politics (in a company) is that the one doing it is trying to get or stay in someone’s good graces (in case you need a favor later), and calculating for things that one might need later. As such (if my understanding is right), in whose good graces are the TV stations trying to get/stay in? Is it the production companies? The management companies (of the actors and actresses)? Is it the actors and actresses (who don’t work directly for the TV stations, right? So why is it that so important)?
Also, is that the reason why in one episode of the King of Dramas, two of the workers (working for two different production companies) mention giving some end of the year gifts to the TV stations (because it is common practice? And what does that ensure or mean?)

I am not judging the process, I would just like to understand it. Thank you for any light shed on this. Happy New Year, everyone!

I’m not Korean but I’m Asian and it’s all about one thing—face. You can’t make anyone lose face or he may not be on you side. So you try to please everyone and when te next big drama comes rolling in, he’ll be more likely to take up the project since the trophy you gave him last year is sitting pretty on his mantlepiece.

And unfortunately, like reflected in KOD, it’s all about ratings. Hence, whether an actor gets a prize is highly dependent on how high the ratings for the drama is.

On a side note, I think these award shows are laughable. And they really are shows. All winners have been informed, hence that explains the no-shows of non-winners. (KMM filming during the SBS award show? Really?)

And the drama! All the crying and sniffling. Urgh, that should be an award in itself.

  2. Annie

Sounds an awful lot like the who’s who of KBS’ highest rated miniseries + dailies, but I can’t say I disagree with most of them.

  3. Huong

    haha, so funny recap…Great……..

Thank you for posting these reviews!!!

  8. lovin it

why didn’t cha tae hyun get anything? :O 🙁

    otherwise pretty predictable..

    • 8.1 thehaydn

yeahh i thought maybe cause Jeon Woo Chi didn’t end yet he wouldn’t get an award… but Jang Nara & Lee Jong Suk got an award (for School2013 which also didnt end yet). o.O so not fair. taehyunie also deserves some lovin’ from KBS.

    • 8.2 zekwana

Why wasn’t he at the awards ceremony, I really wanted him to be there w/ JW and UTM!!:)

      • 8.2.1 zekwana

      • 8.2.2 glo

When he received his best entertainer award at KBS Entertainment Award, he mentioned on his speech that he didn’t get any invitation to attend KBS Drama Award. T_T

        • henii

He was nominated in 2 categories so why wasn’t he invited?

  9. MissLuxedo

Honestly, I’m kinda bummed for Joo-won that he didn’t win the Top Excellence Award along with Song Joong-ki since he kinda deserved to be recognized and awarded for his role in Gaksital…

I get that he still got an award for it but maybe I’m just being greedy….

    • 9.1 ajuma

I’m also sad that Joo Won didn’t get the top excellence, IMO he really deserved it!:(

But on the bright side, he won 2 awards!:)

    • 9.2 Merrily

Me too. I was quite perplexed seeing how Gaksital was one of KBS’s top hits. It even had higher ratings than Nice
Guy. Joo Won was excellent in his role – he carried the show. His acting deserved the Top Excellence more than Song Joong Ki’s in my opinion. But I guess KBS wanted to have a pair of couples for Top Excellence (they did that last year with The Princess’ Man too). Moon Chae Won certainly deserved her Top Excellence.

      • 9.2.1 naya_marie

That’s what I was thinking too, they wanted a pair for Top Excellence, and they didn’t give it to Joo Won(who IMO deserved it out of all the nominees) because he has a new drama for MBC and if he won Top Excellence, he’s gonna get a lot of buzz and people will flock to see his new drama in the rival network!

    • 9.3 bluemoon

Bummer. I feel that Park Ki Woong deserves to be recognized along with Joo-won in the same categories. I really think both of them deserves to win Top Excellence Award, not Song Joong Ki. I feel that both the role of Shunji and Kang To were more complex than the role of Maru.

oh well…………my boys will prove their acting again, and will be rewarding for their awesomness in the future.

      • 9.3.1 janice

Park Ki Woong was awesome as Shunji and even if Joo Won is the main lead, PKW should have also been nominated for Best actor w/ Joo Won, they were both amazing and equally deserving, but I’m thrilled he won for Best Supporting actor…

Why wasn’t there a best drama? I really want Gaksital to win.

        • ladysarahii

I had wondered if Park Ki-woong being cast as a second male lead was the reason he was awarded as Best Supporting Actor. Do second leads ever get the Top Excellence award? (This is my first time following Korean awards; I really have no clue.)

But if I were in charge, Park Ki-woong would have gotten Top Excellence. He made me feel moments of extreme sympathy for a character who was unsympathetic, and his line during the last episode where he simply says “Alone?” was so well done.

I do think he’s one of those actors where you don’t see his full talent until you see other stuff he’s been in as well. He truly makes each character different, bringing in different mannerisms to each of his characters.

      • 9.3.2 janice

Agree with a lot of poster here, Joo Won deserved the Top Excellence more…he poured blood, sweat and tears in to his character, his acting was hands down one of the best performances this year, and he should’ve been recognized fairly for it!:(

But, I’m happy that he got to do the opening number for the ceremony, it was a great performance!

And, bummed that Had Chae Ah didn’t win but she was already a winner because she got not just one but two of her co-stars as her date!

      • 9.3.3 Vinn

Well, to be honest I thought the acting was better in Nice Guy all around (great acting in both dramas though), though Gaksital is the more popular drama. I was actually surprised to see Nice Guy taking the top excellence awards not because I didn’t think they deserved it, but because Gaksital was the higher rating drama and well.. usually broadcasters award for ratings (yeah, MBC… >( what the hell was that with Sun/Moon?). So I’m pleasantly surprised that KBS didn’t cave like that?

Regardless, most of these wins were pretty deserving. And I thought that at least 90% of the people attending were dressed well (albeit perhaps boringly so). I love love love the recaps of award shows, so yay! Thanks dramabeans 🙂

        • Kgrl

I agree, which is also why KBS is credited with more legitimacy with their drama awards. Though, they aren’t above rewarding their top rated dramas with something, I was surprised that JW didn’t get Top Excellence. I personally felt PKW’s was the more natural actor and wished he would’ve been nominated for more.

I don’t think I’m the best judge of Gakistal since I only watched 8 eps, but 1/3 of a drama series is normally more than I would give to gauge a drama’s production quality and acting. I felt the acting was slightly over-dramatic for my tastes based on what I’ve seen. I prefer more sedated portrayals laced with warranted intensity. That said, I still think Gakistal was a great production with a great message to tell. If JW had shared the Top Excellence award with SJK I wouldn’t have thought it unfair.

    • 9.4 Miss D

Me too! Gaksital deserve to win big and they did win many awards but but but I wanted Jo Won and Park Ki-woong to idk get even more praise cause their acting brought me to tears!

Just gotta say, Han Chae-ah was the biggest winner of the night because she got not one, but BOTH of her hot costars to take her. She won hands down.

      Except…what’s with the orange hair?!??

      • 9.4.1 janice

That’s for a movie PKW is doing!

        • lemonade candy

but that orange…ORANGE! RANGE! RAGE! WHY?

    • 9.5 JoowonLover:P

I agree to all of the statements above. But, I’m still super proud of our Joo-won. He exceeded all my expectations and more last year and more power to him for Level 7!

      • 9.5.1 addylovesbwood

^^^Thank you guys^^^ for supporting Joo Won.

I was shocked that Song Joong Ki got Top Excellence.

I went into KBS awards expecting Joo Won to get it…

I can the see the reason behind SJK getting the award.

He truly has come a long way as an actor… but in all fairness… JOO WON DESERVED IT MORE.

  10. 10 LangitBiru

Jin Kyung also in Cheer Up, Mr Kim! She looks nice here.

  11. 11 Phemmy

Park Shi Yeon totally rocked her dress!

    • 11.1 AnotherFan

I agree! And I like the fact that she has a more “mature” figure to really carry the dress (as opposed to let the dress outshine the person in it). BTW, I really don’t get the whole “super-skinny-cutesy-innocent-mannequin” look the Asian entertainment industry is going for…

  12. 12 DEANA

    Thanks girls…

    Just a few thoughts…

-I wish Joo Won’s Gaksital opening number was longer and I wish there was a cheorographed fighting scene whenever he wasn’t singing because he only sang the chorus and he was just standing most of the time and i prefer him wearing the Gaksital costume while performing.

-I really wanted Joo Won and Park Ki Woong to win for Best Couple!!Bromance OTP!

-The IRIS opening scene for part 2 was great but I still can’t get over Jang Hyuk’s ridiculous new haircut.

-So happy Kim Nam Joo won the Daesang!!!

-But why wasn’t there an award for Best Drama?

    • 12.1 SS

about the Gaksital opening number, Joo Won sang the exact thing he did in the Judgement Day ost. It’s not an easy song at all especially to sing it live. I wish they had turn down the volume of the recorded background music and singing. This man can do live without lip syncing. Thankfully I still managed to hear his live singing above the recorded version. Same for the tenor, he didn’t need any aid either.

Choreographed fighting would have rocked but I doubt there was time to prepare and practise as he was busy with filming 7th Level Civil Servant. In fact, he came from there and rushed to the awards just late afternoon.

I too was wondering how will he appear on the red carpet in a tux or suit then changed to Gaksital costume and back. Turns out that he needs that magical Gaksital tree or Horsital to do the suit-costume-suit stunt.

      • 12.1.1 zekwana

Joo Won’s opening was great but I wanted more, it is pretty hard though considering he’s busy and wouldn’t have time to prepare more!

        • Sintia

I love his performance very much! He is awesome.

          • R

Yes me too, his live singing voice was very good !!!

          • R

The opening performance (Judgement Day – Gaksital OST) feat. Joo Won & tenor Lee Jung Hyun

      • 12.1.2 Nooni

I wanted more too!!!!! but that was epic opening ceremony ^_^

actually I missed that opening then i went crazy for a while but thanks to god i managed to find in the internet later xD

    • 12.2 zekwana

      Congrats to Kim Nam Joo!:))

    • 12.3 Ivoire

Hello, where did you guys watch the KBS awards? Is there a site to watch it online (do you know of one), please? (if possible, with English Subs). Thanks!

      • 12.3.1 henii

I don’t know about them but I watched it in KBS World without eng subs last night!

They might air it again, just check the schedule here:

        • Ivoire

Thank you henii! I appreciate it.

          • henii

            You’re welcome!:)

  13. 13 Jae

I always love the funny parts at the end. Thanks and Happy New year!

  14. 14 hanna

A sort of am not happy with SOME of the winners.

  15. 15 Kayt

Am I the only one that got mad that Park Siyeon didn’t get anything?
Why did she have to fight with 2 lead actresses for the Best Actress Award why she was the 2nd lead?
It’s unfair. She deserves to win something for her performance in Nice Guy…

    • 15.1 karecity

i totally agree. well she was kind of lead in that role. but she deserves to win something for her excellent performance. i was more invested in her character than in the main OTP of nice guy.

      • 15.1.1 Kayt

        me too tbqh 🙁
It’s sad that she didn’t win anything when SJK and MCW won many … TT, not that I say they don’t deserve it, because they do
        And so does Shiyeon

      • 15.1.2 pogo

I do agree! She was so good in that role, I wanted her to get some recognition for it too :/

        • Kgrl

I was honestly upset she didn’t at least share an award. She was the biggest “loser” in this award ceremony. I know politics come into play and she’s a low-key actress, but they should have awarded her an award for her great portrayal.

If felt like KBS wanted to compensate by asking her to present and for the cameramen to give her more individual shots. Seriously.

    • 15.2 shiku

I am mad do as I thought she deserved better. She rocked her role and I was more invested in her character than in the OTP.

    • 15.3 mel

Yes. I liked her more than Song Joong-ki and MCW in Nice Guy. I hated her character, but couldn’t get enough of her on screen. She was amazing.

    • 15.4 eny

Yes my biggest dissappointed is joo won didn’t get best excellent award beat by song jong ki because i think he deserve that award more than SJK not because i don’t like SJK, i watch this two drama and I always think Maru should be more deep and in Nice Guy i think PSY is the one who did good job, she deserve award more than two leads

    • 15.5 bluekimchi

Yeah I don’t get why she was up against female leads when she was the second lead, not fair.I was also wondering why they didn’t nominate the secondary female from equator man(don’t remember her name)when they nominated the other 3 leads, and even the actress who played her younger version. But anyway I agree with you Park si yeon should’ve gotten an award for her portrayal in nice guy she’s come a long way from her “my girl” days.

  16. 16 kopi_adik

are we all just gonna ignore the fact that there’s no Jang Geun Suk in sight?? where is the man? O.o

    • 16.1 lizzie

must be winning his money on Japan with his fan meetings/concerts, an award show that he knew he wouldn’t win no bother to show up.

    • 16.2 pogo

I don’t mind his non-appearance, if it means he’s going to pick another drama – and soon! (hopefully, a decent one this time – no more M3s please)

  17. 17 Mystisith

And… I am proven wrong: I was expecting more for Gaksital. Not that I mind.
About those who have a place on my radar:
    – Newcomer Award, Actor: Lee Jong-seok (School 2013). Hmmm. Someone forgot to read his filmography. LOL.
    – One-Act Special, Actor: Yeon Woo-jin (Ordinary Love). I would have preferred a prize for his role in Arang but at least he is not invisible.
    About looks:
    – Park Ki-woong and orange hair: Someone lost a bet or is still traumatized by Full House 2.
    – Park Se-young’s dress is my fav. The color changes depending of the lightning. And that actress is just gorgeous.
    – Lee Beom-soo (than I love) should throw away his face self-tanning lotion. I guess it’s a leftover from Salaryman…
    – Kim Sang-ho looks like he had a mad laugh just before arriving. I want to be in the loop!

    • 17.1 canxi

Park Ki Woong came in his movie hair (for that film he’s shooting now) lol! Don’t hate him ladies!

Also loved that Sung Joon won an award for his One-Act. Is it his first?? It feels like it is. I’m happy for him (:

    • 17.2 DeeDee315

I just watched Ordinary Love today & I was very impressed. Great acting by both leads & a terrific story. Congratulations to Woo-jin & Da-in. Well worth watching.

Ok, are we now officially done with Gaksital? Not all of us were enamored with this drama. There were several better drama’s out there this season.

  18. 18 Aiya

    Acckk~! Song Joong-ki!! <3

    • 18.1 Korazy Lady

Can that man get any better looking? Omo, omo, omo! I couldn’t even concentrate on the rest of the winners after those pictures!

      • 18.1.1 Alexandra Si

Luv watching him on screen. Also Congrats 2 Oh Yeon Seo who picked up the “Best New Actress Award” @ both KBS and MBC, plus the “Rising Star Award” @ the K-Drama Awards. The above pics doesn’t do her justice… she was Seriously Stunning. Thanks DB

  19. 19 Kate

Han Chae Ah is soo lucky! She should date Park Ki Woong~

  20. 20 rainbow

    a really nice post 😀

  21. 21 RoseRivera

I have checked the past 3 years’ awards… the actresses always wear white… “wedding theme”

  22. 22 Kayt

And congrats Shinhye to win for her drama special DWIG.
All she has done this this year was this 1 episode and I didn’t expect it to bring her an award. But it did.
And I can’t wait for FBND
    1 more week to go…

  23. 23 Ga-eul

    – Lee Jong-seok looks SO handsome in that tux. I’m not digging his coat though.

    – Park Se-young must have a Time Turner. It’s the only possible explanation.

    – I’m pissed that Jin Se-yeon won simply because Gaksital netted high ratings.

    – I’m positive Park Ki-woong’s stylist hates him. Seriously, what is THAT THING on his hair? It’s even worse than the hairdos in FH2.

    – Still crying over Jang Hyuk’s hair. Just… just why?

    • 23.1 addylovesbwood

the same way Han Ga In won @ MBC for Moon/Sun

  24. 24 jademwong

Thank you for these recaps of the award shows. I look forward to them since you guys do it just right. There really was a ton of black and white jeesh but Oh Yeon-seo’s purple and blue dress was stunning! My favorite of the night.

  25. 25 Andrea

OMGGG! Thumbs up for Nice Guy! They deserved to receive awards!
    Joong Ki Oppa, why teary-eyed?

  26. 26 ladysarahii

Yay, Park Ki-woong won! Definitely deserved it.

  27. 27 BellaMafia

I am trully disappointed,.. I’ve been waiting for KBS award drama just to see how many awards Gaksital would get. And.. they didn’t win.. *sigh*

    • 27.1 Ga-eul

They DID win. They just weren’t the biggest winners of the night.

      • 27.1.1 BellaMafia

yeah.. that’s what I meant. I thought they gonna win big, however..whatever that drama who won a lot really rolled in unexpectedly.

        • Kiki

          Is that a pun? Lolzzz

  28. 28 Maris

Kim nam joo and park shi yoon are glamorous and fitting for the red carpet even though in black. Love park shin Hye ….looks lovely but did want to see her in colors other than white, black and red. Still liked her simple elegance in dress and hair. Am so happy she won the award.
Most of the dresses are forgettable except kim nams. Did not like Suzy ‘s black fringe around the waist. Overall looked so much older than her age.

  29. 29 @liss@

I agree that Joo Won should win the Top excellence award instead! He totally deserves it considering the difficulty of his role and the ratings that BM got. KBS was hailing BM as a national drama and yet, the awards that the lead actor got for the role seems too unrewarding.

SSK was great and I liked him before Joo Won, but frankly as a fan of both, and having watched both Bridal Mask & nice guy, I actually felt that Joo Won deserves the award more…I guess popularity plays a part.. since SSK has both more fans and is more senior than Joo Won..

Was also disappointed that JW & PKW did not win best OTP 🙁 their chemistry rocks in the drama!

    • 29.1 henii

I’m still pissed that Joo Won didn’t win Top Excellence even though he deserved it more, and I watched both BM and NG and I agree with you, popularity plays a part…here’s hoping that BM gets a lot of nominations for Paeksang!:)

      • 29.1.1 Merrily

I know, right? I’m still upset Joo Won didn’t win Top Excellence even though I slept on it. Overall, I felt like Gaksital did not get enough accolades it deserved. None of the lead actors get Top Excellence and why wasn’t there a Best Drama award? I also agree with you that Song Joong Ki only edged out Joo Won for Top Excellence because his popularity, especially after A Wolf’s Boy.

Joo Won, please participate in a movie and be amazing in it so you can get the award you deserve next time!

    • 29.2 oz

I always wonder, because i’ve been seeing this everywhere. Does SSK stands for Song Joongki? Why not SJK? I always read it as Shin-sekyung whenever i read SSK.

    • 29.3 Sam

Who’s SSK? Song joong ki? Spell his initials right yo. But I felt SJK nailed it in nice guy, his acting was understated and quiet and JW was more shouty and tears. That’s my opinion.

      • 29.3.1 @liss@

Typo.. I meant SJK (Song Joong Ki) not SSK…

        • Sam

Lolz I realize I sound a bit rude up there. Not trying to ruffle anybody’s feathers…

          • @liss@

no…I dont mean offense to SJK fans too. I like i like SJK too. i’m happy both SJK & JW won an award. But for the roles they portray, if I can only choose only 1, this time I would hope JW to win Top excellence. The best is they can share the award. Just disappointed that KBS put JW on one level lower..

          • me_gusta

SJK was great as Maru in Nice Guy but not as amazing as Joo Won as LKT in Gaksital, he gave the character range and depth, he made us feel more emotionally attached with his character, we rooted for him as mask vigilante Gaksital and made us hate him as vindictive LKT, playing 2 characters is a hard task to do especially in a historical action drama…but he gave justice to his role, we couldn’t picture anyone else to play such a bold and daring characters…and that is why IMO, he deserved the Top Excellence more!:)

      • 29.3.2 Sam

Same goes for me. We will never meet eye-to-eye on this. I could say SJK has depth and range as well, I cannot picture anyone playing Maru, etc. etc. it’s just a difference in opinions I guess. I love NG and you love Gaksital. Both of them are amazing. I just feel that SJK fully deserved that award. In the end nothing should stop you from knowing who and who is the best actor as nothing matters more than your own opinion. And this award business thing is useless. There are some other awards more credible anyway…

      • 29.3.3 ruby

I agree with you! Joongki’s acting is more controlled, method acting…No need to be over the top to show anger and pain. Excellent facial expression!! And it is being recognized..more awards are coming for SJK!!!

    • 29.4 minny

SJK’s facial expression in Nice Guy reminded me of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. It looks somehow uneasy & awkwardly sad. It fits his character there, but I prefer a more agitated & lively character of JW in Gaksital.

      • 29.4.1 Sam

Hell Peter Parker was cute…I remembered having a crush on Tobey for ages.

    • 29.5 lizzie

”considering the difficulty of his role”

lol but the stunts did everything that was hard to do…

It is not like JW did every action scene…

      • 29.5.1 custodiasn

Actually, Joo Won did most of the stunts himself, except for the first few episodes, because he wasn’t Gaksital by then. There were a ton of action scenes he played as Lee Kangto and Gaksital.

I think the OP meant by his role being difficult not in terms of the action scenes but the emotional scenes that he had to do justice, he played 2 characters, and both are complex and intense characters.

  30. 30 amkst

where is park siyeon’s award??!! no matter how good song joongki was, it never would have worked on the whole without the way she played jaehee.

at least she rocked the red carpet, i guess……..

  31. 31 haibara

top male excellence award should be given to SJK and Joo Won.. popularity, quality, rating wise…
but no one can’t beat MCW to get top female excellence…
and for psy.. i wished she win female excellence award.. but overall.. KBS is fair at diving their trophy.. both NG and gaksital won 4 trophy..
so.. can i say? kbs>sbs>mbc in term of award their dramas…
ps:mbc is in the last place because they go away with K2H..

  32. 32 haibara

i mean dividing.. not diving.. typo..

  33. 33 missjb

Moon chae won and song joongki received top excelence award are well deserved. both of them rocks in NIce Guy. I wish Park Si Yeon get the recognation she has deserved as well. She is awsome as Jae Hee.

I didn’t expected MCW and SJK can beat Gaksital’s star considering that drama get a higher ave. rating. I’m sooo happy!
both of them really deserved TOP excelence more IMO
Song joong ki just feels so much sublety. And Who says Jin Se Yeon acting is bad? She is one of those talent actress if give a chance and work hard more, she will become a good actress. I love her performances in earlier episode.
    happy new year evryone!

    • 33.1 ilikemangos

“even though her acting leaves much to be desired.”

I actually thought jin sae yeon’s acting was pretty good too, for a newbie.
To be honest, if i had not known that about her, i’d think she was just your average k-drama actress.

  34. 34 toritorisan

So glad that Uhm Tae-woong won for Equator Man. That was probably one of his best drama performances to date. Other than that, happy to see Nice Guy get some wins. It wasn’t my favorite drama of the year, but my favorite KBS drama of this year.

    • 34.1 henii

      Yeah! Uhmforce for Equator Man!:)

  35. 35 @liss@

Typo.. I meant SJK (Song Joong Ki) not SSK…

  36. 36 grumpy

Park Se Yong is so pretty! She has been into 3 KBS production this year, yet no award?

  37. 37 rs6066

I’m just sad that Park Hae-jin didn’t win for his acting in My Daughter So-young.. Honestly, his character always successful to bring out the emotion in me.. His expression and all.. I don’t get any feels from Bo-young & Sangyun & even the appa whom are the main characters in the drama.. And i can’t relate to them at all. I would give kudos to Park Hae-jin, Park Jung-Ah, Choi Yoon-Young and also Choi Yoon-Young’s father in the drama.. That’s the strongest arc of the drama..

    • 37.1 Elle

I totally agree with you! Park Hae-jin is my new best find in MDSY and what keeps me tuned in.

      • 37.1.1 elise

yes!! finally someone mention park hae jin! i felt his pain when he had to break up with mi kyung. i was much more interested in sang woo and mi kyung’s relationship compared to woo jae and seo young. and i know sang woo will end up living a happy life with ho jeong but for now, i can’t accept it. i need some time to love them as much as i love sang woo and mi kyung.

  38. 38 shinhwa

    3 words… Kim Dong Wan ^_^
    Happy new year!!

    • 38.1 'dalia

yes i’m a Shinhwa Changjo! so happy for him!!!

      happy 2013!

  39. 39 Noelle

While I can still type words I will say to all of you a Happy New Year!

  40. 40 OMG

what is up with the dress choices for all three award shows….was there a memo sent to every one that they should wear either black or white….and if u wear any other color, ur in trouble!!!!!!

Personally i don’t care who won what because we all know they kinda don’t mean anything if all they want to do is give awards to all the actors who were in any show on each channel….what i would like to see is one or two universal (main three stations and CABLE channels) award show that actually gives out the right awards to actors, writers, directors and such who deserve it…not a lets give every main actor on our shows an award….

  41. 41 pigtookie

Congrats to Kim Nam Joo and Yoo Joon Sang! Haven’t watched their show yet, but they were hilarious promoting on Happy Together 3. Too bad Joo Won and Park Ki Woong didn’t get that couples award though.

And yes, I did feel that these awards were in general a little more deserved, but that really depends on the fare each station gave for 2012.

Park Se Young, Kim Nam Joo, Han Chae Ah, and Song Joong Ki are drop dead gorgeous tonight, and I protest that Seo In Guk is rather cute bundled up like that.

    • 41.1 pigtookie

And that IRIS 2 intro looked interesting, can’t wait to go watch the beginning of this ceremony!

  42. 42 dany

Hahaha! thank you. Some outfits were just weird (see Da hae and Hyuk)

  43. 43 yumi

    Nothing for Daniel Choi? 🙁
I think he should get an award just for existing.

There are always so many complaints on Dramabeans about the styling of the male characters hair and I’ve never understood it. To me most of the hair looks fine, be it permed, long, short [not the bowl cuts] and works especially when it tells you something about the character..

today for the first time before even before reading the critique I went yikes when I saw Park Ki-woong bit of orange sunshine on top of his head. He looks lovely and compelling the way a talented beautiful proportioned actor can, but the orange sunshine. . . Yikes!

    • 43.1 yumi

Not compelling. In these picture he looks attractive but more in a wind up idol doll way than in a compelling.

Wonderful actor, compelling when he is working.

    • 43.2 quirkywhit

I totally agree: Daniel Choi should get an award for just existing. 🙂 And here I thought I was the only one that felt that way.

      • 43.2.1 bjharm

well he did get a thrill at presenting his co-star Jang Nara with the female version of the award and she did mention him in her little speech

        • yumi

I’m enjoying School 2013, but I am perplexed by one thing.

Who is the stylist on that show? Why does the boys school uniform pants look so awful from behind? The butt always look like old-fashion baby nappies do after the baby is in need of changing.

All the male students look just awful from behind. Did the stylist do it because it is the authentic look of Korean school uniform pants. Or does the stylist hate the male actors–except Daniel Choi?

    • 43.3 ladysarahii

Choi Daniel should get the “You are so adorable you should be cloned” award.

      • 43.3.1 yumi

This sums up my view on that. Ain’t Nothing like the Real Thing/

        • ladysarahii

Haha, true! Actually, I’m watching Baby Faced Beauty and I’m becoming more convinced that it’s Choi Jin-wook who needs to be cloned.

          • yumi

            Talk about helpmate–he was wonderful.

  44. 44 bonn

I’m just sad that joo won didnt win the top excellence award. He wrked soo hard, sacrificing his sleep plus doin all those fight scenes and the tight schedule that is live shooting. Sigh… at least he’s looks satisfied with his awards.

  45. 45 belle

MCW looks beautiful, but I wish I could say the same thing for her dress. I wish she had worn something more suited for her age. This one looks rather…matronic. Nevertheless, I’m so happy for her that she bagged 3 awards, which include the Best Couple with SJK. 😀

  46. 46 henii

Gaksitaaaaaaaaaal won 4 awards, that’s great but I still wished Han Chae Ah won something and Joo Won won Top Excellence!

    • 46.1 Kiki

      So did Nice Guy! Awesome.

  47. 47 Matt

Our queen Moon chae won looking beautiful as always <3 although a bit conservative.

    Park shin-hye… gorgeous.

Yup that's all I got lol.

  48. 48 R

Joo won really deserved higher award for his great performance in gaksital !!! The gaksital trio looks lovely on the red carpet !!!

    • 48.1 addylovesbwood

The only way I will feel better about Joo Won not getting Top excellence award is if he wins something @ the 2013 Baeksang Awards

  49. 49 ladyana2j

Okey, so Joowon won excellent award while soo jong ki won top excellent award???!!! This is totally dissapointed me! I am not fans of both actor but really adore them,
but but I just felt that joowon’s acting in gaksital is really a masterpiece!
And even more surprising, no best drama award????? when they have many great drama of the year, they didnt give any award????? This is really piss me of! I Kinda hope Gaksital aired by MBC instead by KBS, so gaksital as one of highest rated drama can win so many award!

One think I is Pkw finally win his first ever award!!! YAY!!! Congratulation park ki woong!!! You are totally deserve it!

SBS drama award is more satisfies this year for me than other two! Well, at least Gaksital get most award from dramabeans…

    • 49.1 bee

You hope gaksit aired by mbc?? Didn’t u know what a mess mbcda created this year?what with han ga in won best actrees, yoochun didn’t get popularity(impossible),ha ji won n lee seung gi didn’t get anything, than what will happen if gaksital on mbc?we’ll don’t know, but… Just but.
I think kbs is the best than other, with sbsda what’s wrong with their new star awards?just give all of them an awards,n what’s with every category for the awards have excellence n top excellence, then who is the”best of the best”actress, for actor we can took the one who got daesang as best of the best, but who for actress.
Kbs bad one is just that they give the top excellence award not to the one who truly deserve it,the other thing is okay.

Sorry if too long n if u didn’t agree n sorry for my bad english 🙂

    • 49.2 me_gusta

If Gaksital aired in MBC, it might not have been popular and successful as it was in KBS….and MBC’s drama awards are messed up!!

Great points about Gaksital though and kudos to PKW, he deseved the award!:)

  50. 50 canxi

Lol, I dunno I never like anything Moon Chae Won wears? But she’s pretty!

Yay!!!!!!!! for Park Ki Woong for bringing home an award. He deserved it and I am rooting for him 5ever. I think the only thing that throws the suit off is the bright orange/blonde hair, lol. Ahhh movie hair…it’s either good to you or it’s not (seriously curious about this character now) but he is so good-looking anyway, I can’t stand it.
