Dae Jang Geum watch: Director procured, never mind, no he’s not

So the Dae Jang Geum 2 saga continues. In case you missed all the dramz about this sequel, refer to this timeline of events chronicling the drama’s production starts and stops (mostly stops).

This time it’s news about the director, which surprised me because the reports that came out on April 18 gave a name that hadn’t been in the previous stories, PD Kim Geun-hong. Not that he isn’t well qualified, having directed big sageuk hits like Jumong, Yi San, and Queen Seon-deok, but because the name that had been hitherto attached was the original Dae Jang Geum PD, Lee Byung-hoon. The initial report stated that PD Kim had been confirmed as the director for the sequel, only to have MBC quickly issue an official rebuttal, stating that PD Kim was most certainly not confirmed, and that the position was still undecided. Following that, PD Kim Geun-hong said in an interview that he hadn’t even been offered the position. (MBC, GET IT TOGETHER.)

Furthermore, despite reports that the series’ star Lee Young-ae had agreed to return in the sequel, current reports state that they are still awaiting her final decision. She had apparently stated her wish to work with the original producers, and seemed very receptive to the idea of a Jang-geum who is now a mother, having herself become a mother in the intervening years.

MBC still hopes to put Dae Jang Geum 2 on the schedule as a Monday-Tuesday drama later this fall, after the upcoming contemporary melo Triangle and the fusion fantasy sageuk Record of a Night Watchman.

I am not very excited or keen on Dae Jang Geum 2 because I read somewhere that the story will be such that Jang Geum lost her hubby (!) and also her daughter, become the teacher for Keum Young's daughter! Dae Jang Geum without Min Jun Ho doesn't sounds interesting at all.

Just stop this obsessive madness already MBC. There is no more stories to tell. PD Lee Byung-hoon was suppose to retire after Horse healer. I bet writer Kim Young-Hyun doesn't even know that she was suppose to be the writer for DJG 2 just like PD Kim Geun-hong as the director.

I will almost be sad when (or rather IF) this starts since the behind the scenes drama is so much fun. On the hindside, someone needs to tell MBC that insane hype can only get them ratings in the initial phase; after which it mostly depends on the PD-Writer (which they clearly aren't too keen on establishing well).

Can we make a drama from the drama behind DJG2? Is Anthony available? LOL

Is anyone actually excited for or anticipating this? I never watched the original Dae Jang Geum so I have zero investment on this matter, but it just seems to be getting ridiculous.

Dae Jang Geum the original was actually very good. Lee Young Ae gave commanding performance. One of the most memorable and most popular sageuk.

Yeah. I have special nostalgia for this drama, especially because it was my first kdrama that I watched as a young child. I remember how I fell in love with cooking during the show-- like, really fell in love with cooking.

I didn't see the original one, but a neighbor who studies Traditional Chinese medicine tells me that Jewel in the Palace is a great mnemotecnic series, since the medicine she learns at the Hospital she sees in the series.

There shouldn't be a Dang Jang Geum 2 because it'll just be the same story and you couldn't help but compare it to the original.

Some dramas are not meant to be made into sequels. I just don't see how this would work... leave classics alone.

So basically nothing has changed since the beginning of time when they started talking about a DJG2. Good to know.
