Good Doctor writer comes back to KBS with Chief Kim

KBS is busy filling out their drama lineup for the rest of the year, and is currently considering a series named Chief Kim (working title) to fill the post-On the Way to the Airport timeslot on Wednesdays and Thursdays for late fall.

Chief Kim will be a drama from writer Park Jae-bum, who wrote heartwarming medical-human drama Good Doctor, medical-crime mystery drama God’s Quiz, and paranormal vampire-doctor drama Blood. There’s a clear motif there, but Park will be stepping away from the medical genre that has brought him success (well, most of the time), taking Chief Kim instead into the office workplace.

In the “office human drama,” the main character goes from being a CPA to working at a standard office, where he becomes the “ordinary Chief Kim.” The drama purports to tell stories that stand up for people and take the side of the weak, so I envision a slice-of-life workplace drama that combines touching emotional storylines with a lighthearted touch — something like Good Doctor for the office. That narrative combination certainly worked for Good Doctor, which was a hit when it aired in 2013, which I attribute mostly to its feel-good plots and starring performance by Joo-won, which let us overlook the simplistic medical cases and storytelling style. Let’s hope it’s more Good Doctor than Blood, at least; I will contend that Blood only seemed like a disaster because of the awful acting, and that the plot could have been workable with better leads, but it did still have its problems of pacing and awkward genre-mashing.

In any case, if Chief Kim gets confirmed for that timeslot, it will premiere in November, following On the Way to the Airport, which follows Uncontrollably Fond. Two other dramas that were in the mix for the timeslot are Savage Heat, a melodrama from writer Yoo Bora of Secret, and Ice World, which is based on a Japanese mystery-suspense drama, although currently it looks like Chief Kim is the leading contender.

Sounds interesting. I'm not 100% convinced yet, but I'm always up for some slice-of-life genres. With good leads and right pace of the plot, it can certainly become a good drama in the making.

"The drama purports to tell stories that stand up for people and take the side of the weak", I wonder what kind of office that is?
Anyway, this will go up against Legend of the Blue Sea...good luck Chief Kim (and Weightlifting Fairy over at MBC).

If they want to at least get decent ratings going up against Blue Sea, they should go for the Secret writer's drama...

KBS drop too much project. Can they choose only one project to air? From Savage Heat and Ice World, now Chief Kim. Can they just star casting soon?
SBS lineup is good now and they're only one now can take a break. While MBC and KBS so tired to choose dramas to air.
The lineup of MBC and KBS on Wed Thurs (except W) are hopeless. They can't fight against SBS with dramas like that.
Am the only so curious why KBS don't choose big project to air at weekend timeslot? Their drama in that timeslot always have high ratings, so they don't need to worry about it?
