News bites: February 11, 2017

Moon Chae-won

  • It’s disappointing that Moon Chae-won (Goodbye Mr. Black) has turned down Bride of the Water God 2017, but I couldn’t quite picture her starring opposite Nam Joo-hyuk (Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-ju), who is still the lead contender to play the water god, so perhaps it’s all for the best. A spinoff of a popular fantasy historical manhwa, the tvN show will be set in modern-day Seoul, and the hunt is on for a new female lead. Writing for the project is Jung Yoon-jung (Misaeng, Arang and the Magistrate) and Kim Byung-soo (Nine, Three Musketeers) will direct. Filming on Bride of the Water God 2017 is slated to begin next month, and the show will be 100% pre-produced before airing in the latter half of the year. [Joongang]
  • There’s a new tvN drama in the pipes that sounds interesting: Writers Kim Young-hyun and Park Sang-yeon of Six Flying Dragons and Tree With Deep Roots will be credited as the creators of sci-fi mystery Circle. A short drama that will air in two parts, the first, titled Beta Project, will be about aliens landing in 2017, and the second, A Fancy New World, will be set in 2037 and will check back in with the alien visitors. PD Min Jin-ki of SNL Korea will direct. [Joongang, MBN]
  • There’s been more progress on the American remake of God’s Gift — 14 Days, and Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol) has been cast in Lee Bo-young’s role in Somewhere Between (the American title). Cameras for the show will begin rolling in Vancouver, Canada in March. [DongA]

  • Sol Kyung-gu, Chun Woo-hee, Oh Dal-soo

  • I Want to See Your Parents’ Faces, a film about school bullying, is courting movie vets Sol Kyung-gu and Oh Dal-soo to play the fathers of troublemaking students. Chun Woo-hee (The Wailing) has been offered the role of a wise and warmhearted substitute teacher, and the film based on an eponymous Japanese novel will be directed by Kim Ji-hoon (The Tower) and will finish casting before heading into production within the next few months. [TV Report]
  • Choi Dong-hoon, the director of Assassination and The Thieves, is currently working on the script for a reboot of 2009’s Overheard, which starred Sean Lau, Louis Koo and Daniel Wu as corrupt police officers. Choi had previously snapped up the rights and will be serving triple duty for the Korean remake as a producer, writer, and director. He’ll collaborate with CJ E&M this time instead of previous investor/distributing partner Showbox, and production is expected to begin before the end of the year. [Star News]
  • Production on Deception and Murder had halted back in 2015, but the script has been making the rounds again and Joo Ji-hoon (Mask) is now up for the role of a killer (a job previously offered to Kim Woo-bin before the project stalled) in the thriller film. [Joongang]

  • Joo Ji-hoon, Baek Sung-hyun, Lee Shi-un

  • Engines are finally picking up steam for Father’s War, a movie that long ago cast Han Seok-kyu as a father out to discover the truth about his son’s death, which occurred while on active duty. Baek Sung-hyun (Voice) has been cast as Han’s son, and filming will begin at the end of this month and is expected to last for three months. [Joongang]
  • I’m really excited for this cast: Scene-stealer Lee Shi-un (W–Two Worlds) has been cast in Uhm Bok-dong, the first film from Lee Beom-soo‘s company, Celltrion Entertainment. About a famous Japanese Occupation-era cyclist, Rain was previously confirmed as the titular character, Lee Beom-soo his coach, and Lee Shi-un will collaborate with both men. Uhm Bok-dong is expected to hit theaters before the end of the year. [Sports Chosun]
  • In a show of loyalty to Remember—Son’s War director Lee Chang-min, Namgoong Min will make a special cameo appearance on Man to Man. Director Lee was reportedly hesitant to ask for the favor, given that Namgoong is currently busy filming Chief Kim, but was extremely grateful that the star didn’t hesitate before affirming. Man to Man will air on JTBC sometime before mid-year. [Osen]

  • Namgoong Min

Agree, it's good that she turned down the role, there's a huge age gap between them i wish they casted an older male lead, maybe she would've accepted if her co-star was an age appropriate.

Seo In Guk and many other actors from the year 87/86 would've suited the role.

Moon Chae Won is a woman and I still see Nam Joo Hyuk as a boy (maybe it's all those student roles he's played).

I agree, someone younger like Kim Jiwon would suit the role better. Besides, who doesn't miss that girl.

It would have been great, but I am guessing some are either enlisting or going towards other projects. I still like Nam Joo Hyuk. He is young, but I am hoping he will do a good job in the role.

I would have loved her to take it if they'd only had a different (more experienced) male lead :/

The way I see it, the wrong person dropped out - they should have kept her and offered the male lead role to someone who'd match her better.

I love that you gave her pinch-able chicks!

Now I'm wishing there was a drama-to-be about a plucky, young, genius, female poultry farmer who gets into a fight with a young, genius, male vegan. Hates him, then loves him. (And the 2nd lead could be the son of the market owner who buys eggs from her--too shy to confess, but jealous of the vegan lead.)

0

@Wag_a_Muffin - hahahaha now I want this drama!

0

@Wag A Muffin

Your drama idea sounds fun. Kinda reminds me of Drinking Solo. I didn't watch but I think there was alcohol elitism there?

0

Moon Chae-won was the reigning princess of sageuk in 2011-2012, you should check her out in The Princess' Man or War of the Arrows (especially the latter).

She's also good in modern-day dramas, and one of the very few actresses who is equally believable as a sympathetic 'bad girl' second lead as well as a more traditional female lead - Nice Guy was a great blend of the two.

I want her to back with sageuk. I love her in sageuk but not so much on modern (not that she is not good, she is indeed great, but sometimes actors shine the most in sageuk, and that's I love the most about her.

Of course good sageuk, and will be the best if it is female centric sageuk.

0

She kind of struggled with her speech but she gets the job done and more. I'd love to see her in another sageuk "Only" if the leading man is Kim Moo Yeol. (I'm picky, shoot me).

0

I remember her talking about being criticised for her speech in the early eps of TPM, but by the end everyone loved her.

She'd be great with Kim Moo-yeol, but I actually want to see what a reunion with Park Ki-woong would be like, they had serious chemistry in War of the Arrows even if it was what I call wrongness chemistry.

0

Love her since "Painter of the Wind" with Moon Geun-young so I didn't care much for the criticisms.

0

Yeah I'm happy Moon Chae Won is not with Nam Joo Hyuk, but the production team should keep her and match him with better actor. Maybe someone like Yoon Si Yoon or Lee Soo Hyuk (who looks every inch like the Water God).
She's good actress and I feel she's really underrated these days, buried with not-so-good actresses and idols.

@Grapes

How bout Lee Soo Hyuk? The male Lead needs to be mysterious from what I heard. Let him keep his Gwi hair.

Or Lee Ji Hoon who was just in LOTBS.

Is Sung Hoon too green? He was mysterious as the white-haired deadly flute boy in Faith.

Then there's Ji Jin Hee if they need to go older. He was foiiiinnee and ambiguous in Blood( yup, I watched that... that stuff. Bailed early though, tee hee).

Joo Jin No, I've not watched in anything( he has a nice butt tho) but I hear his a good actor.

Oooh ooh I just thought of Gat Byung Yeon! He of the flowing locks and mane of glory in MDBC *sigh*

More casting ideas please, its fun!!

Yes Lee Seo Hyuk would be also perfect for the role, he suits the fantasy very well, whenever i see him i still think he's a vampire because of his pake skin and red lips.

Ji Jin Hee was amazing in blood it was the first time I've seen him in anything. I watched Blood too till the end, although I didn't like many things in that drama specially AJH acting i hated him in Blood. But JJH is too old for the character I can't see him as Habeak

Park Hyung Sik, Yoo Ah In, Kim So Hyun, Song Jeon Ki.

Yoo Ah-in, SJK, SIG, even Park Bo-gum would be good in the role imo (PBG if he was still open to doing cable, and if you wanted a younger lead)

Park Hyung-shik could be a great choice - he's still young but talented and versatile, and has the screen presence of a god.

I mean, I do like Nam Joo-hyuk, just...... not for this role! Unless they rewrite Habaek to suit his puppy-next-door range, and then that wouldn't really be Habaek at all.

Park Hyung-shik has become quite the show-stealer in Hwarang, judging by comments by both netizens and beanies. I'm happy about this, he's talented and really worked his way up - good for him.

Also I just saw side-by-side caps for Defendant and Hwarang with PHS and Ji-sung, and it is uncanny how much he looks like a baby Ji-sung.

0

I have a hard time warming up to the guys even though they are very pretty. The writing sucks and I can't take them seriously.
The one Hwarang that I was ever really into was No Young-Hak in "King's Dream."

If Hwarang wasn't about the 3 kingdom era I would've dropped it at the beginning.
The one that is growing on me is Seo Ye-Ji. She also had a small part in "The Throne" but noticeable.

0

Honestly, I'm not even watching, and it looks like it's no loss. From what I've read the Hwarang guys are ok but the writing is what sucks.

I remember Seo Ye-ji seeming wildly miscast as a high school kid in Moorim School because of her voice, it's good to see she found a role where sounding mature actually works in her favour.

0

You are not missing out on anything pogo. Rebel is going to steal our hearts and the ratings. I really don't care if only 10 of us are watching. It's the most promising one so far.

0

Yasss, Park Hyung Shik matches perfectly as the lead based on the excerpt of the manhwa I found.

Too bad it's not possible for him to take the role...or is it?

0

@pogo @Kiara

Seo Ye Ji is one of rising actress which is noticeable. She is like another Gong Seung Yeon for me, I want to see them keep getting roles.

0

Park Hyun Shik is petty. But I'll take Lee So Hyuk over him. While I do think PHS is probably a bit better actor, I love LSH more. ?

I read the manhwa a bit, PHS delicate prettiness will not suit Habaek's grumpy personality. I want someone like Joo Ji Hoon as Habaek because he did grumpy pretty well in Goong and Mask.

Ah, the Moons I love! Haha I agree with what you said that MCW needed female-centric projects. That's one of the reasons I was glad she rejected this one, because while it's a really good story, it's said by many that the female didn't really have strong characterisation? Like it's so male-centric and I can't have that settled for MCW. Don't know how the drama production will handle the female character, but it's risky. Her aura and talent deserves legit strong, independent, character like in NG, TPM, WOTA, and GD.
Then MGY, I REALLY miss her. She's a bit out of luck with dramas post-CS, moreover it's mostly because of the behind-the-scene dramas of the making lol really unfortunate for her talent. Though the most recent, Achiara's Secret, was good, it had low rating. Hopefully she recovers well from the surgery and can choose what to work on next (the theatre perf is still not finished tho). She's gonna have a movie this year and I'm so looking forward to it.
Or can't we just have Moons combination again like POTW? lol I'm still waiting for that day, even more so now that MCW is under Namoo ;)

How come they even had thought of asking MCW as the female lead to NJH?
I like him, but we know that MCW is in different level. Okay, her previous drama was failed but it doesnt mean she's a failed actress. She has a lot of popular dramas in her hand. Good doctor, nice guy, princess' man something... Even as the 2nd lead in popular drama brilliant legacy.
NJH? His first drama as lead didnt make it even i love wfkbj so much.

Why they choose NJH? Well, who knows this drama will be a hit (just like many actors turned down dots, but look at sjk now) but then... We have no warranty.

Goodluck NJH, and i hope MCW will get a good script. Choose a hit male lead. Seriously, some lead actors need to refresh their luck in drama, just like lee dong wook.
Kyungho and leejinwook need to do it. Repetitively failed is not a good sign as lead. Shrug. Sorry not sorry.

I am not disappointed that Moon Chae Won declined the offer but my sentiments aren't the same as many.

I loved Nam Joo Hyuk in Weightlifting Fairy and perhaps because I am not a fan of the webtoon or a die hard fan of the man himself, I look forward to see if he can deliver. If he fails then his naysayers will have a field day and he will have to learn the lesson. If he succeeds then kudos to the guy for exceeding expectations.

Has he even confirmed the role? I hope we can get the answer quickly because I am quite tired of reading all the alternative suggestions.

Back to MCW, much as I like her I don't feel that she should take the risk. Maybe it has got to do with the fact that I can't see how this drama can be changed to modern setting. Also, if NJH is confirmed, he and MCW don't look immediately compatible. I want MCW to be in a more solid or serious genre, not a fantasy one. Goodbye Mr Black was absolutely dreadful so I hope MCW will choose carefully for her next project since she isn't someone who does one or two dramas a year.

I may sound contradicting when I want NJH to take the risk but not MCW. NJH is still young and he has plenty to prove. He should also try different genres. MCW on the other hand can be selective.

0

reply

Required fields are marked *

Yes they should just confirm it by now if NJH take it or not. I dont want to waste my time thinking on the alternatives, it is fun but not all dreams come true. If he accepts, well good luck for him. Just pray his partner will be at least as great as Lee Sung Kyung or maybe better.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I agree?

MCW is probably a little hesitant after her last show, who knows? I think young actors are good with taking risks & can probably bounce back in some way and I don't think NJH is untalented. If the writers and director seemingly like him so much we haven't heard any other offer they gave out for the same role then they must have a plan there.

But it doesn't sound like he confirmed either so that's why I'm not really looking that deeply into it. But I am very curious...

I have a feeling even Nam Joo Hyuk will not accept the role, my basis for this is from their interview for the Japanese broadcast of wfkbj, in the interview he said that he'd probably stay away from anything that involves swimming because he really got tired shooting his swimming scenes in wfkbj, and seeing that the title involves "water", I think there is some swimming involved (right? hahah) also from that interview, both joo hyuk and sung kyung said that they would like to take a break for a while, especially for joo hyuk who had shows that were only months a part. :)

I'm glad Moon Chae Won turned down Bride of the Water God. I like Nam Joo Hyuk but I feel like she and him wouldn't have been compatible.

But while I think this was a factor as well for her to turn the role down I believe Moon Chae Won is hesitant choosing her next project as well. GMB sounded good on the paper but was terribly written and a complete fail. Bride of the Water God - the premise of the manhwa sounds fun but I can't understand how it would work in a modern setting and maybe this is why Moon Chae Won didn't want it. It sounds a bit like a disaster in the making. Of course for the sake of the people who will be casted I wish the writer and the director know what they're doing. I wish them all the best.

And I wish Moon Chae Won all the best as well. :)

It's better to choose the next project wisely. I can wait a little longer for her to choose a good script. And hopefully one in which the writer is capable of writing a strong female role. Or even a female-centric drama.

People are being so harsh and RUDE towards Nam Joo Hyuk. You havent even seen him in the role yet and are already judging. Just stop.

I am 100% sure, if the drama doesnt get high ratings, due to poor writing, everyone will still blame him. Why? Because you all have made up your mind about him as a weakling already.

ALSO its so hypocritical while you are secretly gushing over his Joon Young character in WFKBJ but are suddenly acting like his talent is non-existent for new projects.

Just shut up and at least give a tiny respect.

I haven't seen any rude comments yet... am I missing something?
We're criticising, yes, but not being rude (at least, not the majority of us). True, we haven't seen him in the role yet and he could COMPLETELY blow our minds and be amazing, but we are choosing to think realistically, and judge his current ability based on his past performances.
The truth is that although he was wonderful in WFKBJ, this role is extremely different, and requires far more emotional weight. NJH simply isn't strong enough an actor yet, as far as we can assume from his previous performances. He was a delightful puppy, but a water god...? We reserve the right to be cynical.

Explain what kind of comment(s) that you think are harsh and rude. As far as I can see, no one is being harsh and rude to Nam Joo Hyuk. Or otherwise your standard of hard and rude treatment is different.

I think on sites like this, people voice their opinions on actors and they aren't always favorable. Of course, if I read an opinion that differs from mine, I am less pleased than if I read one which agrees with me. As long as comments are not filled with obscenities or trolling and personal attacks on other users, anything else goes. Even the most highly respected actor may get a negative opinion.

I loved NJH as Joon Young and I think he has the potential. I am also hoping that he will prove me right but I am not 100% confident of him doing well in this role. However, that doesn't mean that he shouldn't be cast or take the offer. You are right that he will take the fall if the drama doesn't do well even if it's not his fault. But that's part and parcel of being the lead, isn't it?

There is also a likelihood that people won't give him credit if the drama succeeds and he has a huge part to play in its success. Well, it can't be helped. There are more popular actors here in Dramabeans community and less popular ones. Not always correlated with ability.

If beanies aren't largely for NJH, don't think that it's the whole world against him. Diverse or intentional as we are, we actually form a very small part in the entire community of drama viewers.

Required fields are marked *

You are right. I have seen a lot of rude / harsh comments in other sites that I find DB is nothing. Disqus for example. Some viewers can be so extreme in pointing their views, to the extent to insult the actors' appearances, not to mention the words used. I think DB is still one of my favourite site because regardless how strong the opinion or argument, i do find it is tolerable. Of course sometimes the discussion can keep getting heated but it is also depends on how we see it. If I see some opinion that intolerable, i sometimess will just ignore and scroll down.

On Nam Joo Hyuk, what I see most Beanies love him thanks to WLKBJ. Because we love him, we dont want to see him taking a risky project. But it is up to him since he is the actor, he decides based on his confidence level, because it can be a hit or miss especially this drama is adaptation from manhwa which has its readers and it itself is risky.

0
2

Required fields are marked *

Exactly - he did well in Weightlifting Fairy but people aren't wrong to express misgivings about him taking on a role that doesn't seem like it would be a good fit for him.

Very well said @ET.

I do have to say I understand everyone's reservations, but I was reading the comments before Weightlifting, and there were A LOT of comments saying he shouldn't take the role, wasn't ready for a lead, ruined School 2015....

So sometimes it is just funny how things work out.

The thing is I didn't even think he was confirmed to play this role. I am not familiar with the source material, but I love the writer so I trust that aspect of the drama. However, that doesn't mean it will win a ratings battle so it is risky. I think the whole blaming the leads thing is kind of silly when so many other things - mainly writing - come into play. But those leads get paid the big bucks so it is what it is.

0

Haha, have you seen him in scarlet?

NJH was good in wfkbj. But he needs more experiences to be a real actor who can act in many genres. He was so good as puppy boyfriend in citt and wfkbj. But other than that?

People criticize him to make him better. Not because i or other hate him. I prefer him to be like yookjae from btob. Even he was not the lead in goblin, but he got a good character that made him known by public. People recognized him more and more. It's just about time he'll get his first lead status.

Even lee dong wook accepted himself as 2nd lead in goblin to make a comeback as lead in thr next drama.

That's it. Goodluck for NJH. I do hope he gets more recognition. I am a YG stan and he is a YG family. Of course i support him. So no hate hate yes. Hehe

Triple yes for MCW to decline those offering. I mean, it is not because i do not miss her in TV. I miss her so muchh, but it was a good choice. Maybe she has to carefully to choice, since her last drama is not really good. Good luck for you MCW!
