Drama viewership ratings for the week of Dec. 4-10, 2017

I can’t believe there’s a show in dramaland that has 16 seasons, but tvN’s Rude Miss Young-ae just kicked off its 16th installment this Monday (the first season launched in 2007, so they’ve been churning out the seasons with some speed). The show has had some ups and downs in recent years but has by now amassed a loyal fanbase, and I expect it to pull in similar numbers for the rest of this run—modest, but respectable.

KBS’s brand-new workplace comedy Jugglers performed pretty well; its 5.6% and 7.0% are a fair bit below its predecessor’s last numbers (Witch’s Court wrapped with a 14.3% last week) but the trajectory is promising. Its competitor shows did okay for themselves, too; Jo Jung-seok’s Two Cops and Yoon Kyun-sang’s Mysterious Il-seung both upticked from their premiere numbers last week.

On Wednesdays and Thursdays, two new shows hit airwaves: KBS’s fantasy melodrama Black Knight and MBC’s romantic comedy I’m Not a Robot. I’m not even going to pretend to understand those numbers with Black Knight pulling up to a 9.3% on Thursday and Robot settling at 3.1%. I mean, normally I’d be more reserved about ratings opinions, but I watched both shows and Black Knight was kind of painful. But who can understand ratings?

I liked black knight.. i don't see what people hated so much.. gotta say KRW and the two witchy ladies and that fog (reminding me of chicago typewriter).. got me..

I loved Black Knight as well. Very much. I found it quite intriguing, I don’t understand the hate either. Just because it’s a Supernatural Fantasy romcom doesn’t necessarily mean it should be compared to Goblin. Each drama should be judged on its own merits.

Agree cause people think that it's like a goblin before watching it first. I like black knight i don't know why but maybe because of Kim Rae Won (I watched all his dramas and movies) and the mystery of the two witch. At least in here it's more realistic as both of the leads are human.

Is there hate? Recappers aren't even picking it up. I think it's interesting after watching the first 2ep,, but I rarely finish any SSK drama so.. let's see. It kinda reminds me of Ann Brashares My Name is Memory.

Even though I dropped Nothing to Lose after the first week due to its ho-hum writing, I am still happy that it is receiving decent ratings for nothing else but for the fact that Park Eun-bin, Yeon Woo-jin, and Dongha will continue to have more opportunities to pick hopefully better dramas in the future.

JTBC and Jin Goo deserve it, and I'm probably going to watch it on winter break 😁😁
PS. Congrats to Mon-Tue slot for finally giving all the shows normal ratings. Even if they're not much at least they're the same.
PPS. If I'm not A Robot korean viewers got triggered because of the army exception scene, they won't come back. Sorry INAR, not much to do about ratings now 😯

I have just started Prison and I, for one, think that it is the best show of the three. It has good writing, a gazillion of heart, good acting and I even find Krystal bearable (probably the rest of the cast made of real actors makes me easily forget her short apparitions on my screen and she is not as bad as she was in the other two dramas I have seen her in before). Considering this is a cable drama, its ratings are so much better that the other three contenders, in my opinion.

I dozed off in the middle of episode 2 and woke up some what 10 minutes before it ended. I didn't really understand where the plot was going to but I'll stick with the show for a little bit more because the scenery was so beautiful and I'm curious about the Joseon backstory.

although BK isn't there with loving each minute.. but it was a nice premier week.. plot captured interest.. did not seem to run helter skelter

I was initially surprised by INAR doing so poorly but I think the strike might have affected it badly. If it could've started straight after Hospital Ship ended, the strong lead in would've boosted it. It's the kind of show that would probably do well on tvN. If MBC rerun the episodes over the weekend (like they did with Two Cops), hopefully it could rise next week. I'm not hoping for amazing ratings, but I hate seeing shows I like doing 3%. :(

I'm happy Money Flower hit a new high this week - it's getting better and better and I'm glad that's reflected in the ratings. I hope with the success of this series MBC just gives up on longer dramas in this timeslot and instead focuses on high quality mini series. I remember Marriage Contract also doing well last year (love that show <333). I feel like SBS are on the brink of giving up on their weekend dramas again.

I'm going to credit Black Knight's success mostly to KRW's popularity.

1

Required fields are marked *

I hope they will be firm with their decision because we never know, once the rating is stable again, they might come back with 50 epi weekender again! Even Man Who Sets The Table was also being cut-off to 36 epi instead of original plan for 50 epi.

2

Required fields are marked *

I agree about the strike affecting INAR badly, it's too bad because it's a fun drama.

1
reply

Required fields are marked *

The strike may have affected INAR, I don't now, but it seems like from reviews, Koreans did not like the premise which is pretty hard to overcome.

I'm happy that Money Flower keeps increasing. I really enjoy it. I get with MBC airing both episodes together why the ratings for the first episode are lower, but I don't know how people can tune in for the second hour and know what's going on lol.

3
1
reply

Required fields are marked *

I think that's fair enough. It's definitely not for everybody.

ikr??? lol that happens alot with weekenders and I never understand how you can do that. Especially with MF - the writer has constructed mini arcs each week that climax in the second hour and you miss out on so much skipping entire episodes. O.o

I love KRW, but I couldn't even get past the posters for BK (maybe I'll check it out later- could get better who knows). Enjoying I'm not a Robot so far, so really sad to see such meager ratings.
I've heard lots of people say ratings don't matter, but they do. The next batch of dramas are going to be modeled after what is popular and what draws the biggest crowds. If shallow writing with big sweeping romantic moments is in, than that's what networks will produce.

5
2
reply

Required fields are marked *

I like both INAR and BK. But if BK is shallow, how is INAR so much deeper than BK? Once in a while shows with great scripts come along but most are just for entertainment (while they last) and consumption. You just watch what appeals to you.

I personally didn't think it was bad. I was slow but that's nothing new to Korean dramas. If this is a genre you like and if you have the time give it an honest try.

5
reply

Required fields are marked *

Not that bad, and not that great as well, the storyline is kinda intriguing but the editing is kinda a turn off. Since INAR is doing badly in rating, Black Knight has to be the punching bag. lol. It won't happen if the rating was like Jugglers for example, despite of being on the last place. Nevertheless, it might change on the second week, who knows.

I was not a fan, but I've seen worse dramas. I thought it was boring and that the chemistry between the leads was meh which is make or break for this kind of story IMO. I'm not really a fan of this kind of genre though. I get why the ratings went up, however.

The current drama ratings landscape is so unpredictable. I hope this will not discourage the production team of dramas with low ratings. I'm really affected when the shows I like don't get the ratings they deserve. I can only hope that the production team will not compromise the quality of the drama and remain true to the vision set by the writer/director/producer.

I guess it's a matter to each their own. I watched Prison Playbook, Black Knight and I Am Not a Robot. So far out of the three I like Prison Playbook the most with Black Knight coming in second. Not understanding the hate that Black Knight is getting. Sometimes it seems as if certain people like or dislike a drama then people have to follow suit. What I hate most is when we start to blame Koreans for liking something we do not then turn around and praise them for good taste when they like what we like. Comes off as being fickle.

Congrate to Money Flower cast and crew. I think this is one of Jang Hyuk best character after 205. Let's face it, Voice is popular but it's focus more to the case rather than mesmerize with his acting.
I need to slap myself for doubting him taking this role before coz it's a weekender. lol. On the other hand, I kinda relief LDH rejected the role coz it will be comparing with Chuno. Or maybe it will be called Chuno modern reincarnation, with all the longing look that he give PSY character also with all the revenge and leading lady married someone else. Haha.
Similarity aside, Money Flower still a solid drama with good acting and interesting plot twist and far from typical weekend family drama.

I wanted to see Han Chae-Ah in this drama, but I think Park Se-Young is doing fine in this role.

This drama has great cliff hangers, and I like how the instrumental music elevates the emotions..kind of bittersweet and hypnotic..I don't know, but it works. On paper, the story is makjang, but the acting grounds it and makes everything plausible.

It's not very surprising that INAR has low ratings, it's a youth romcom airing in a time slot that stood empty for a month.

But I'm happy for Mysterious Il-Seung and Jugglers, they picked up well, MIS even got slightly ahead of Two Cops to be top on Tuesday.
