Shin Hye-sun considers becoming a queen for tvN fusion sageuk

Actress Shin Hye-sun (Angel’s Last Mission: Love) is positively considering a new project. It’s a tvN fusion sageuk called Queen Cheorin, after the wife of the illiterate King Cheoljong. According to her agency, Shin Hye-sun has received an offer to play the main character, Kim So-yong, and is currently in negotiation talks, although nothing has been confirmed.

Written by Park Gye-ok (Doctor Prisoner, Inspiring Generation) and directed by Yoon Sung-shik (Babel, Hwarang), Queen Cheorin is a sexy comedy taking place in the Joseon era, when strict rules about men and women were enforced as the social norm. I’m excited to see what Shin Hye-sun does with this drama because she does comedy really well, and I can’t wait to see all the preeetty fusion sageuk dresses.

No other information on the drama has been released, but here are a few notes on the historical figure Queen Cheorin. When King Heonjong died without an heir, the rival Jo clan and Kim clan scrambled to find a weak-willed puppet to put on the throne. They found Cheoljong, who was a distant cousin from a branch of the royal family that had been sentenced to exile and lived in poverty. In a play for power, the Kim clan married a clan daughter to Cheoljong, and she became known as Queen Cheorin. Unfortunately, they did not produce any surviving male offspring, and she was later relegated to a powerless dowager position.

Upcoming drama Queen Cheorin is slated to air on tvN in the latter half of this year.

Awww.. I liked her so much in My Golden Time though I think the ending is such a disappointment. She played a struggling character really well. Normally, I’m not that much into Saguek, so I can’t say I’ll check this out; well, SHS is quite appealing here.

I'm only going to comment about the photo. Why choose a photo in which she's so photoshopped? Her left arm is ridiculous.
This woman is pretty enough and has a wonderful presence to make her look thinner.
Glorification of skinny shouldn't be a thing.

She is amazing but also her last three parts have been such strong characters - Forest of Secrets, 30B17 and Angel's Last Mission. She could make great things of a fusion sageuk if the script was good. And I'm more excited about the genre after last year's Tale of Nokdu and Rookie Historian. I'm therefore mildly optimistic (bearing in mind she hasn't taken the role yet).

The scriptwriter screwed up Inspiring Generation but was relatively well received in Doctor Prisoner, from what I heard. So there's quite some uncertainty for this drama.
The history of the chosen period seems interesting, though I am not sure the "sexy comedy sageuk" would be the right direction for this seemly sad historical period.

@asiandramaniac, @kiara,

I haven't watched INSPIRING GENERATION, but thoroughly enjoyed DOCTOR PRISONER, mainly because of Namgoong Min and his battle with rival jailhouse doc Kim Byung-chul.

Eureka! Cast NM as a savvy smuggler operating out of Ganghwado who is the extremely-close childhood friend of the fisherman who will be king. He's the son of the local quack. (Tip of the gat to NM's performance in GU AM HEO JOON, his only sageuk role I'm aware of). On the side, he cooks the books for the local magistrate, who is relatively benign as Joseon political appointees go -- and a Ganghwado boy who made good. Satto has a hearty appetite, but tries to go easy on collecting the taxes and tribute levied on the impecunious residents. Such a unicorn! When the fisherman gets drafted as King Cheoljong, he finagles to bring his fishing and drinking buddies to court with him.

Cheoljong gets hitched to Queen Cheorin, who has more on the ball than her illiterate-but-honest-and-honorable spouse. Her birth name is Kim Sam-soon, and she is the eldest surviving child in a family of 7 girls and no boys. Her father, a Confucian scholar, educated her and her sisters as if they were sons. She's a sharp cookie with a strong sense of ethics. Royal hubby Cheoljong is tickled pink at the prospect of relieving the citizenry of poverty and starvation, which he knows only too well personally. Queenie, the money dude, and Satto are just the folks to give his dream legs and make them happen.

"Sexy comedy" is code for "epic bromance(s)" and "sexy brains." Queen Cheorin is a big fan of hangeul, and teaches hubby reading, writing. and 'rithmatic on the sly. He continues to pass himself off as a dunce for protective coloration.

How's that for a synopsis?

@kiara,
With the great-great-great-grandpas of Kim Sung-ryong and Seo Yool aiding and abetting Queen Cheorin and the King, that's a big batch of sexy brains engineering the hit on yangban pocketbooks. The descendants of the Noisy Hongs would make a fine bunch of collaborators in parting the yangban from their wealth. ;-)

I have come to refer to 2019 in the kdrama world as “The Great Sageuk Year of 2019”. So now I can probably add, “late of happy memory”.
Anyway, I have been waiting to see what if anything would be coming down the line in the sageuk genre. QUEEN CHEORIN is the first that I have come across.
We have some beanies here who are really knowledgeable about Korean history and share that knowledge so watching a recapped sageuk for me is a real learning experience.
That being said, after a very quick and cursory look at the history at the time of King Cheolong (1831-1864) and his Queen Cheorin (1837-1878) I really don’t see where the comedy will come from.
I loved Shin Hye-sun as Seo-ri in THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN.
I guess I will have to wait for more information to be released.

@marcusnyc20 bong-soo,

In light of the historical events of the time period (such as the persecution and martyrdom of 10,000 Joseon Catholics over the span of a 100 years by 1866), I can't image anything remotely funny.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Martyrs

King Cheoljong and his kin lived in abject poverty on Ganghwa Island. He remained illiterate his whole life. In this show, is the "Woodcutter Prince of Ganghwa Island" going to go to school? Can we anticipate a high school musical or something?

Maybe QUEEN CHEORIN will be a black "sexy comedy." In addition to his queen, Cheoljong had 7 concubines... and no viable successors. I still got nuthin'.

It is entitled WIND AND CLOUD AND RAIN which according to AsianWiki will be coming in May.

You both are probably familiar with the Director.
It appears that the drama takes place at the time of
King Cheoljong.

Oh, heavens, @marcusnyc20 bong-soo, I'm glad to hear from you. Thanks for tagging me. I saw your earlier note the other day, and just haven't gotten back to you. I'm glad to hear that you're okay in the Big Apple. We’re fine in the Garden State. Keep well, please. ;-)

Thank you for the reminder. I spotted the casting news for WIND AND CLOUD AND RAIN on the AsianWiki blog in mid-February and added it to my to-watch list.
http://blog.asianwiki.com/korean-dramas/park-si-hoo-ko-sung-hee-cast-in-tv-chosun-drama-series-wind-and-cloud-and-rain

https://wiki.d-addicts.com/Wind,_Clouds,_and_Rain

My take on WIND AND CLOUD AND RAIN, which is related to King Gojong's predecessor, is that it could involve Christianity in Korea – and Donghak. Park Shi-hoo and Ko Sung-hee play the leads, with Jeon Kwang-leol portraying Heungseon Daewongun, the great villain of MR. SUNSHINE and NOKDU FLOWER. It sounds like a latter-day version of THE KING'S FACE. (Can we get a cameo by Shin Sung-rok, pretty please? He scared the pants off me in TKF. It came as a shock after seeing him play a mooncalf cop in THREE FATHERS, ONE MOTHER.)

Song Seung-heon turned down WACAR in favor of the male lead in WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE DINNER TOGETHER, which sounds like a much better role for him. Even so, he looks terrific in hanbok and acquitted himself well in SAIMDANG, LIGHT'S DIARY, which was also directed by Yun Sang-ho. I can't blame SSH for giving Heungseon Daewongun a pass. His drama is also set to premiere in May.

I'm not really all that up on directors and screenwriters. @kiara is the expert on that count. ;-) That said, I was tickled to see that Yun Sang-ho directed THE STORY OF THE FIRST KING'S FOUR GODS / TAEWANG SASINGE, set in ancient times, Gojoseon, and Goguryeo. I loved it – a real swashbuckler, with a humongo cast, including Bae Yong-jun, Mr. Hallyu himself – and your fave Kim Mi-kyung as a blacksmith – with many young actors who are now adults. Plus one of Yoon Tae-young's relatively few sageuk roles. He was magnificent as Kuchon in THE KING'S DAUGHTER, SOO BAEK HYANG, and is a badass antagonist in this, too. Male lead Yonsama was badly injured on set towards the end of filming, which made for a rushed and unfortunate live-shoot finale, but overall I still loved the show. It was more coherent and better executed than ARTHDAL CHRONICLES, for which I watched TAEWANG SASINGE as a precursor and introduction to the Korean higher beings and metaphysics.

Re: Sung Hyuk

Ah, so that's why he looked vaguely familiar in 365: REPEAT THE YEAR. Dang! I loved him in HWAYUGI / A KOREAN ODYSSEY as gelato seller General Winter and his sister, the fairy bartender. What a great, nuanced dual performance. Sung Hyuk was such a scene-stealer. HE played the hunter in TRAP?! Yikes! I dropped the series because it became too violent for me, but I was still watching during the hunt.

On a more serious note, I hear your lament about the show's potential that wasn't realized. It almost seems that the drama was born under a bad sign, with a case of epically-bad cosmic timing or something. I only knew that the vibe I was getting was incompatible with me, and that was that. I was already looking forward to REBEL, whose screenwriter was a known quantity to me, as were many of the cast.

I had a similarly empty feeling after watching THE GREAT SEDUCER / TEMPTED to the bitter end. What a fiasco. Woo Do-hwan and Kim Min-jae could not save that show. The queen bitch female second lead who started out as the original trio's queen bee -- and all of the so-called adults -- were such awful characters that I ran out of brain bleach as I attempted to expunge it from my memory. Yesterday I got a rude awakening when I realized Moon Ga-young is playing the female lead in FIND ME IN YOUR MEMORY / MEMOIR OF THE MAN. But now she sounds as if she's channeling chirpy Jo Bo-ah in SWEET STRANGER AND ME. Yikes! I will stick around for Kim Dong-wook, since I never seem to learn. I loved him in COFFEE PRINCE and THE GUEST aka COSMIC FREELOADER FROM HELL.

The only good thing to come out of Hwarang was the crack videos. Oh and this episode of 2 days 1 night: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cEmmgyO_jac

Yes, I could see beneath it all the bones of what could've been a really interesting and meaty sageuk, but alas it was lacking too many ways.

This may sound insane... but I actually liked Jo Boah in SWEET STRANGER AND ME. I know... I know. Hear me out.
The second half of that show dragged unbelievably, since they ran out of plot, and so tried to drag out the whole "We can't be together because you married my mother" thing for five episodes (which was just stupid), so the only thing keeping me going was her antics with Soo Hyuk. I just found her most amusing and hilarious. She wasn't the unnecessary bitch anymore (because there was no reason for romantic conflict from her anymore) so I just found her entertaining and even started rooting for her to get some kind of development and ending.

Currently MDL still lists Song Jae Jung as a writer for FIND ME IN YOUR MEMORY, so I will personally not be touching that unless you all want me to start shitposting again. ahem.

Aw, @marcusnyc20 bong-soo,
I didn't mean to make you feel bad. HWARANG just didn't grab me after watching SWEET STRANGER AND ME. I took a gander at my Kdrama log, and see that my plate was already quite full. I had exceeded my quota of flower boys who couldn't act in MOON LOVERS: SCARRED HEART, was already watching GOBLIN and VOICE, and preparing to tune in to SAIMDANG, LIGHT'S DIARY for Yang Se-jong -- while squeezing in HONG GIL-DONG before REBEL premiered in late January 2017. And that was only the currently-airing shows (aside from HGD).

Thank you for this casting news for Shin Hye-sun, @tineybeanie. I've enjoyed her performances in ANGEL'S LAST MISSION: LOVE, THIRTY BUT SEVENTEEN / STILL 17, LEGEND OF THE BLUE SEA, and her romance with Sung Hoon in the excellent family drama FIVE CHILDREN / FIVE ENOUGH. Her turn as Korea's first Kpop star during the Japanese occupation in HYMN OF DEATH was utterly tragic.

I'm pleased to see that screenwriter Park Gye-ok has penned a number of movies and dramas that I've enjoyed:

HEAVEN'S SOLDIERS (2005 film) With time travelers, a missing tactical nuke, and Yi Sun Shin, what more could you ask for?

SWORD IN THE MOON (2003 film) Sageuk bloodbath deluxe.

DOCTOR PRISONER (2019, KBS) features a delightfully wacky romance between a prosecutor and a jailed chaebol hospitalized for a fake illness concocted by doc Namgoong Min -- in the midst of his gripping cat-and-mouse game with Kim Byung-chul.

KID GANG (2007, OCN) The few episodes I've watched had funny sight gags. Alas, the subtitles weren't up to snuff.

BISCUIT TEACHER AND STAR CANDY (2005, SBS) Gong Hyo-jin and Gong Yoo in an iconic noona romance. I just re-watched the first 4 episodes, and they are wild and crazy.

Yoon Sung-shik has directed two dramas that I really enjoyed: THE KING'S FACE (my first encounter with Shin Sung-rok in villain mode) and the epic SLINGSHOT / STORY OF A MAN. I still haven't gotten around to watching his GAKSITAL / BRIDAL MASK, considered by some Beanies to be Joo Won's best performance to date.

I must admit that the concept of QUEEN CHEORIN as a sexy fusion sageuk comedy gives me whiplash. The history of the period is grim, so I've got a case of whiplash as well as cognitive dissonance. Between the writer and the director, however, I think they have the chops to pull it off. On the other hand, until the rest of the main roles are cast, I'm adopting a wait-and-see attitude.

You're welcome, @oldawyer. It really pays to take a closer look at the screenwriters' and directors' entire filmographies. One dud shouldn't be the kiss of death to an otherwise decent portfolio. As a fan of Admiral Yi, I loved HEAVEN'S SOLDIERS. It has a wonderful scene of a modern-day Korean soldier encouraging the hapless young future hero by reciting one of his own poems to him. Very touching.

Dang, I've forgotten the "golfer couple," but that's what I get for binge-watching FIVE CHILDREN. The only golfers I can recall at the moment are the antagonistic biddies in MARRY ME NOW? Sheesh.

I'm going to tune in to QUEEN CHEORIN, too. I'm stalled at half-way through CRUEL PALACE: WAR OF THE FLOWERS because Injo's scheming concubine has gone into overdrive and has Sohyeon Seja and his spouse in her crosshairs. The actual history is so sad I'm dreading how this plays out. But I will get back to it.

One weekender that I have been slowly working my way through is YOUR'E THE BEST LEE SUN-SHIN (young IU in the title role, Yoo In-na was also in it). The standing joke is that the poor title character is a girl who is actually named for Admiral Yi. This was emphasized in the first episode when IU stands in front of the admiral's statue, after failing at a job interview, and says "Lets just keep this between ourselves, OK?".

I so glad SHS in a Sageuk !!!
I don’t know if there is a romance ( I hope there is no romance) but if there is
I worried about the man lead... If he can’t act there will be a huge difference.

Shin Hye-sun has the ability to teach her male lead how to act- more by example than instruction. Case in point: L in ANGEL'S LAST MISSION. At the beginning he was what we expected but by the end of the show he was actually giving a very good performance- to the astonishment of us all. L's newest show is about to air- I am going to watch just to see if the lessons stuck.

L’s acting to the beginning to the end was bad for me. But if you liked his acting then is good for you. :)

@oldawyer,
I'll be watching WELCOME / MEOW: THE SECRET BOY, too, to see how L is doing. He's been making steady progress. I liked his performance in MS. HAMMURABI, and thought he did okay in RULER: MASTER OF THE MASK, which itself was not the greatest show. He did well in CUNNING SINGLE LADY and SHUT UP FLOWER BOY BAND. I'm looking forward to his feline instantiation. On the other hand, I feel bad for Seo Ji-hoon, who seems to be consigned to Second-Lead Hell. On the upside: two fave veterans are in the cast: Ahn Nae-sang and Kim Yeo-jin, plus Jo Ryun (wife of ubiquitous character actor Woo Hyeon).

@oldawyer,
I've been having a blast watching L in WELCOME / MEOW, THE SECRET BOY. I really enjoy it. With all the dark and depressive dramas currently airing, it's a breath of fresh air.

My wife loves it and I agree that it fills a real need- Light and fluffy is especially needed now.
