Gonna be a super nerd here, but did you ever see the commentary where he talks about how it’s super important that he’s not wearing a tie in this scene? I just remember thinking “Yeah it is, because you needed maximum hotness to end the drama on, obvi.” I think all the other actors also were just “Yeah, he’s fiiiiiiine”
I read that he writes diaries for each character that he plays, including Thornton, so I don’t doubt that he thought out the tie not tie dilemma very carefully.
I feel like “Yeah, he’s fiiiiine” is exactly what Henry Lennox thought when he saw Thornton at the train station at the end. 😉
I always find it so amazing how Beanies all seem to have the same good taste! None of my real life friends know North and South (a travesty really), so I’m extremely glad to find like minded people😀
Same! And the similarities between beanies continues. They didn’t even know Austen so I had to introduce them to her first. I think only one friend took my advice to watch it, but we haven’t seen each other in a while😥
It’s because Gaskell doesn’t get her due outside the literary set. She was totally underrated. Though I had to read Ruth in my Victorian lit class and it made me ragey, but it was an excellent commentary on that kind of bullshit story that was so popular at the time. I mean, it was basically a Candy story, but with pregnancy.
I love Gaskell and will defend her to ends of the earth. If I had had to read North and South serialized I would have been driven crazy. You know, I think one of the reasons Beanies love kdrama and North and South is that the structure of a serialized novel is similar to that of dramas.
YES The serialized novel is definitely a precursor to dramas. I think you can likely trace serial novels in newspapers to the cheesy serial novels of the early 1900s to serialized radio series preceding the advent of televisions which finally brought dramas into being (of course there was evolution within each media to bring us what we think today of each form)
I wish I was still a student with university access to look for articles about this.
Oh, I straight up know for a fact that my love of k-drama comes from my love of literature. My timeline is:
Loves books –>Majored in Lit –> Became Obsessed with BBC Costume Dramas –> K-dramas (because law school ruined tv for me).
I think my favorite Gaskell stories always involve her fights with Dickens when he was her editor. He tried to convince her that he knew the BEST way to write serial novels, and I love that the writers of this miniseries tried to adjust the plot to reflect her original ideas from letters.
I love that as well. Gaskell was a badass, and North and South was basically an FU to the critics of Mary Barton. She is one of the authors at my dream dinner party.
Why has no one made a movie or series about this. It would be fantastic.
I forgot that. I always forget Dickens was the most ridiculous person and yet he’s held in such high esteem today. (I mean, I love him, don’t get me wrong.) Is Gaskell the one who also got back to churning out chapters within days of giving birth? I feel like I remember something about that too but it’s been too long since university for me to remember.
@mollyp I don’t get on rabbit unless I’m on my laptop (it’s one of my failing measures to be online less), but I will add all of y’all to my group for Thornton’s Swooning Admirers next time I log in.

Henry Lennox took one look at Thornton without his cravat and was like, “Yeah, I’d leave me for that too.”
