Shin Hyun-joon gets stitched up

Shin Hyun-joon (Cain and Abel) is taking on the part of a police detective for his latest movie, the thriller Family Picture, and has sustained an injury to his finger while shooting an action scene. I know, “finger injury” sounds mild, but the accident must have been fairly significant, because it required fifteen stitches (oww).

The incident took place as Shin’s character and his partner, an officer played by Lee Ki-woo, get caught up in a fight scene with their suspect during a raid of a loan shark’s office. Apparently it wasn’t an elaborately planned scene, but rather a down ‘n dirty fistfight, and the staff had been nervous prior to the shoot. Evidently for good reason. Shin Hyun-joon’s hand injury resulted when he was so absorbed in the scene that he threw punches hard enough to break his own skin. He continued filming the scene through the night and headed to the hospital the next morning, where he received his stitches.

Family Picture is described as a crime investigation thriller of two cops working to find the culprit in the shocking murder of a child, and takes a realistic (read: gritty?) tone. (Generally this type of movie isn’t my bag, but plotwise Familiy Picture sounds a bit like Gone Baby Gone, and if this is anything like that movie, it’ll be a good thing.)

Another actor collapses on set

This is probably callous of me, but another actor faints on set and all I’ve got to say is: Ho-hum.

It was belatedly revealed over the weekend that Kim Bum fainted on the set of his SBS drama Dream, and was released from the hospital visit after a brief stay and an IV drip. This occurred last week — he shot a fighting scene over the 11th and 12th, then lost consciousness just before filming was scheduled to begin on the 13th. Honestly, I can’t recall if this is the first or second time he’s collapsed on Dream, because news like this is so common these days, and Kim Bum has already taken several trips to the hospital this year as he filmed his last drama, Boys Before Flowers.

Baek Sung-hyun shakes off minor filming injury

Twenty-year-old cutie Baek Sung-hyun (Our School E.T., Stairway to Heaven) is currently playing a movie star’s rebellious younger brother in KBS’s Accidental Couple and had a minor injury while filming the drama.

In Episode 5, his character gets into a fight with Hwang Jung-min (who is entering into a contract marriage with Baek’s sister, played by Kim Ah-joong). He hit a wall and scraped the skin from both hands, and while I’m sure that stung, this is such a minor story that it’s odd to see it in so many media sites. (In fact, at first I thought it must be a motorcycle-related accident, since all the articles were using photos of him seated on his bike.)

I wonder if it’s only being reported now to drum up ratings; while the Wednesday-Thursday drama ratings have been relatively even across the board so far, City Hall is in first, its most recent episode posting a 14.6%, with Accidental Couple in second with 10.3% and Cinderella Man slipping into last with 7.9%.

I liked the first couple episodes of Accidental Couple, but I’m starting to lose interest in this drama. Anyone watching think it’s going to get better and should be worth sticking around for? These days I just don’t have the time to stick with a “maybe-but-probably-not” series.

Kim Seok-hoon rejoins filming

Actor Kim Seok-hoon of the currently airing drama Iron Empress (Empress Cheon-chu), who was in a pretty serious car accident two weeks ago, is back to work.

The weekend historical series had found itself in a tight spot with their lead actor out of commission, and Kim had felt guilty for missing filming due to his hospitalization. What’s a little unsettling is that apparently the hospital was against Kim checking out, which he did against their recommendation. Released on April 24, he will return to the hospital two to three times weekly for follow-up care.

To accommodate the actor’s condition, in the drama series, Kim Seok-hoon’s character is laid up in bed after being stabbed. Even so, Kim is still suffering from the injury to his lower back and neck, and finds it difficult to walk. The production team is doing what they can to keep the character lying down out of concern for the actor. (Although I say, if you were really worried about Kim’s health, how about you insist he listen to medical opinion instead of succumbing to guilt about delaying the shooting schedule, and just write him out of the plot for a couple of weeks, huh? I mean, this drama is scheduled for 50 episodes, and surely their writing team can somehow whip up some narrative magic to account for an actor’s serious injury.)

Kim’s accident occurred on April 11 after leaving the film set for the day; his vehicle collided with a 5-ton truck while changing lanes.

Kim Seok-hoon hospitalized following car accident

Over the weekend, actor Kim Seok-hoon of the current weekend sageuk series Iron Empress [천추태후, or Empress Cheon-chu] was in a car accident, and apparently the injuries are more serious than first guessed.

The accident occurred late on Saturday night, when Kim had been traveling back to Seoul after filming. According to one source, at the time of the accident, Kim had no external injuries, and they were relieved that it appeared he was not severely hurt. However, as with many car accidents, pain grew steadily worse afterward, and he was hospitalized. Kim’s management explained that he cannot move his hip or neck, and therefore has to remain lying down. He cannot walk, and finds it difficult to sit upright. It’s very possible that he will not be able to return to filming soon.

Kim plays a main role opposite the lead character, played by Chae Shi-ra, and his next scheduled shoot for the drama series is on April 14. If he’s unable to make the shoot this week, Iron Empress will not be able to air its upcoming episodes (to broadcast on the 18th and 19th) as scheduled. A rep from Kim’s side said, “Kim Seok-hoon keeps worrying about the drama’s filming schedule from the hospital room. He keeps repeating, ‘I’m so sorry to the staff.’”

Best wishes for a full recovery. :(
