The McRib is back! (Next Tues to be accurate). My stomach and fingers are ready to inhale one. It's such a deadly food item.
If anyone is looking for a wonderful, romance, beloved-yet-underrated genuine romantic K-drama, I've got a recommendation for you.
It's Rain's best drama EVAR, and one of writer Lee Kyung Hee's best works (IMHO). You laugh, you'll cry, and if you're like Thundie, you'll promptly re-watch it two more times afterwards.
Now I'm off to go buy the Sang Doo official box set!

This one made me cry. And then laugh. And then yell at my computer. And then fall in love with Rain. And sob. And wish I was a little girl who could call Rain daddy.
It was also the first time I watched cheesy MVs about a Drama.

Right there with you, brookeve.
I can't even hear the refrain from My Love without tearing up. I was trying to find an MV to post and ending up spending an afternoon sobbing in the office.
I hate for anyone to think this drama is a sob-fest, it's not. You cry because its so beautiful to watch.
This one for Sang Doo is wonderful:

I love me some Sang Doo.
My older sister and I bonded over watching it. We laughed, laughed, and laughed some more. Then there were tears.
Now Rain is all beefy and I'm not interested.

Hai Veronica, yes sometime i have that kind of feeling too, can't wait for friday so I can say something about drama that I had just finished on OT.
ha, ha, ha but my comments are never serious, like you know some people always have that kind of skill to make comment about drama deep and insigtfull. mine is like joke, like after watch Will It Snow For Chrismast, I just want to say Good Kdrama God, this is no.1 kdrama that has at most time skip ever (has 4/5 time skips in one drama isn't that many?) or what's up with that title? in fact that I knew it has 16 episodes, after 9 episode, everytime the scene shows falling snow, time skip, & the OTP look happy together, I thought it was the final episode. And heck the final episode doesn't have falling snow scene or I think it isn't even at chrismast time. I know maybe the title doesn't mean literaly, but Ugh.
Sorry to rant over :) Why is Housemaid awkward? I'm more curious about it than cyrano agency.

Hyungjoon is talking about how TOP and Jaejoong sound when he calls them on the phone. With Jaejoong's impression, he says, "Hyungjoon, you bastard, why don't you call anymore, you bastard." i don't know how much to say without spoiling anything, and anyway i don't think i understood everything 100%, but yes, there was definitely a hint of romance, though it wasn't present throughout most of the episodes. it would have been out of keeping with the rest of the series/their characters, but for once i honestly just wanted to see one full episode with hyung-do and yoon-yi doing romantic, couple-y things together, joseon-era style, before the ending. i mean, episodes 9 and 10 were pretty random, though thematically consistent, and for some reason all i wanted in their place was angst followed by resolution and full-blown romance (manly, i know) after all the mind-warping drama of eps. 7 and 8.

Thanks. Lol. You mean like drunken piggy back rides, and a trip to the karaoke bar? Joseon style? I would have liked to see that too, but episode 9 didn't even have Yoon-yi, and 10 wasn't bad...at least they both were in the same episode, AT the same time, which is saying a lot. But you've made me all excited to watch the finale!! Considering roughing it, and watching it raw but I don't want to spoil myself.
ilovebinderclips
October 31, 2010 at 2:44 PM
haha i wouldn't be that excited about the finale... the only real hint of romance was at the ending, and even then... sigh. most of the last two episodes was scifi/mysteryish stuff.
i dunno, i *really* want to hear what other people think about the ending, and the series as a whole -- i have my own theories about what's going on, but i'd really like to know what other people are thinking.

**Spoilers for all that is holy don't read if you have not seen What's Up Fox.**
It is my favorite drama. Love it to pieces. PIE is great. Ko Hyun Jung's drunken "chuuuul Sooooo!!!" basically had me completely won.
They also have the best scenes of jealousy and historical relationship development I have ever encountered. It adds so much layering. He has always loved her but never dreamed of being with her. After coming back from his attempt at forgetting her. They sleep together. Ahhhh! It really is too delish...and she had these weird mixed up feelings for him. Motherly, sisterly feelings that sort of crossed taboo lines, unspeakable lines because of his age and closeness to the family.
The jealousy scenes too...oooo. HIm on the roof of the car, or outside of the house drunk and screaming for her when he knew she wasn't there but wanted her to be.
Heck even there first encounter on screen is fabulous. Him all messy and half naked her weilding a large lamp pole. Then the "springy butt" sequence. Ahh the memories.
Now I know what I will watch when I get off the plane. What's Up Fox Marathon here I come.

hehe,
I'm on episode 9, Started watching in during my layover in NY. Heheh. Yeah I barely finished unpacking. And I have seen this thing a gazillion times. Problem is when I start watching I don't stop. And then there is the rewind issues. Like I just have to see that scene again You know that scene from episode 8 where your heart gets torn out and handed to you repeatedly while you are also cheering and happy to no end that it is happening. Yeah, I love this drama.
Laundry doesn't take much work so long as you don't fold it or iron it after it comes out of the dryer. Step 1 Washer. Watch drama for 35 minutes and then while Changing disks, buffering, or whatever move clothes to Dryer. 90min later throw clothes on any clean flat surface for later. Laundry finished! Drama interruption minimal!

Laundry must be folded. It is one of my OCD things. In fact, any random article of clothing near me must be folded or I start to have a nervous breakdown. It's completely annoying. (Other random nonsense that I have to deal with: papers/books must be stacked, caps must be screwed on bottles, a light must be on in a room that is occupied... and I'm a lot better than I used to be.)
I just finished episode 11. I love these characters. I want to take them home and feed them and pet them. I will make them tacos.

One more thing I absolutely love... PIE's man-handling! It goes over the top in some Kdramas. The guy gets all wrist grabby and forceful and it looses something in purpose. But here it has so much meaning since there is that age difference. Every forceful act is his own emotional scream for male dominance/acceptance in a true relationship. You want to cheer every time he does something aggressive. That is a sign of good acting and great writing. It isn't just a wrist grab, back-hug, or forced kiss. It is a declaration of "you will look at me and love me". Her reactions too are tempered and real for the situation. She reestablishes as the elder in the relationship and the one in control and yet she is so emotionally out of control.
I swear It makes me a giggling idiot to watch it.

Well after Watching "Whats Up Fox?" for the second time around, I came to the conclusion that some of the older dramas like
"Stained Glass", "Attic Cat", "Phoenix", "Spring Walt's", "Que Sera Sera", and of course "Whats Up Fox?", seem to me that the whole "structural synthesis", not only in the writing, but the consistent thematic of the over all approach of how this Dramas where constructed are far superior than some of the dramas of the past three years, like "Will Snow for Christmas", "Cinderella Sister", "Prosecutor Princess", "Take care of Young Lady", "Coffee House",
"Road #1", even I dare mention "Chuno" in the mix.
Some how the older dramas tend to have a very cohesive story line, even with the crazy approach as to subject matter, and the way the angst create tension all trough the drama.
But some of the newer dramas specially the "hybrid Rom/Com/Melo's", that has become popular in the last year e.g "PP", "CH","IML", some how the structural consistency not only in the story, but in the over all construction of the drama where, the "Open Story Line" takes precedent, and no one knows from one episode to the other where the commitment to a "Hard Story Line" is set, thus creating such a great amount of tension within all the subplots that the last quarter of the drama totally falls flat by the time in some case that episode #9 comes around in the case of "WISFC", or #12 in the case of "PP", and #12 also for "CH", even "Cinderella Sister" suffer after episode #4, I do not know what the causes for this type of anomalies in this particular dramas maybe to much fluff and not enough substance!!!!
Well I do not know, but what I know is that after all this years "Whats up Fox?" still one of the best dramas around!!!!!!!

Hey, long time, mah bro!
Hear, hear! I get you on that a lot of shows these days tend to turn into WTFery, drop in quality, digress from the heart of the story mid-way through *cough*EoE&PP*cough*, and all that. But I adore WISFC. I adore Lee Kyung-hee too, WISFC did have a few flaws thus was probably not amongst her best quality works -- that would probably be the more unconventional Thank You and the acting wasn't as strong as it was in say, MiSa, but in terms of story, WISFC was the more wonderful one of the bunch... y'know the whole deal with Kang-jin's pendant and everything. I think episode 9 made a lot of sense, he called back a certain boyhood theme in which he turned self-destructive, it fit his character and it was understandable given his shock after learning the true price of having his pendant returned.
I have been watching it this weekend and I realise I truly love so many things about it, from Cha Madam, Sancheong bridge, that damn pendant, Song Joong-ki as Ji-yong and the background score which sounds like it's something straight out of a Miyazaki fairytale anime -- it's a classic.
The Seasons Dramas ain't got nothing on Lee Kyung-hee.
On the subject of Lee Kyung-hee, I'm tempted to watch Sang-doo now, I was deterred because of Rain, since I didn't really like A Love to Kill, but I'll have to check this out sometime.

My dear Supah!!!!
I got to give you that one fair and square!!! The only reason why I have pointed out "Will snow for Christmas" is in great part because it is the first drama that "literally broke my heart", I will agree with you that as far as the content of the story line is concern few dramas will match the intensity and brilliance of "WISFC", but indeed the last quarter of the drama fell flat IMHO, and I was so distraught, Honestly!!! That I could not continue watching the rest of the drama, the last part felt like we where on a different drama altogether, having said that to be fair to "WISFC", I think is one of the best K-dramas of the last 10 years!!!!!!!
Last but not least . I really like the way you always takes time to spread the love for "WISFC" all around, and always takes issue when the drama receives a critical comment!!!!! CHEERS!! : O }

Mate, I'll take your last comment as a compliment and not as hidden sarcasm. ;)
WISFC started out enchanting, and the initial episodes had been filmed late summer/early autumn when everything was green and lush and crickets chirped in the night. The difference in the closing episodes couldn't have been more stark. They had the signature Lee Kyung-hee; melancholy, mundanity, a heavier almost suffocating atmosphere against the backdrop of a cold, harsh winter. I think that was enough to turn people off. There were a few callbacks where they tried to recreate the magic and here's a clip from episode 15, where it worked: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqJ3S3Q41jI (love this scene!)
*shrug* the story remained consistent for me, though crazy in parts, it still made narrative sense to me overall.
I honestly don't intend to combat your comment or try changing your mind, I LOVE that you have your own set of reservations about the drama, any drama. But I do feel an itch to slip in a comment here or there (and appreciate these kind of comments coming back to me too, serious) about a drama that's being criticised and saying ''actually, I liked that'' and stating a couple of reasons why I did like it. Like say I'm criticising Fugitive and someone pitches in and says ''hey, I actually like that, Rain is quite talented and overall it's working for me.'' That's cool.
And I'm pro-individuality like that (screw the establishment!) I'd hate if we were all to join hands and sing ring-o-roses whilst praising the same dramas and hating on the same dramas. Bleh.

Before reality set in Young Shin was a princess....
Yeah I do like Lee Kyung-hee, sometimes it's a hit sometimes it's a miss. For the record:
Will it Snow at Christmas? : Ok, I don't consider it a masterpiece like you but it's watchable.
Thank You : One of the few dramas that made me cry. (What is this "crying" you speak of)
A Love to Kill : No, just No. I'd rather stare at the image of Lee Ki Woo in a trench coat holding a baby for two hours. If I could find that image I'd be doing that right now. Internet, I think that image might be gone because it's so good. Like, we don't need to have people getting heart attacks from hotness overload here.
Beating Heart : Quirky, Weird, not a lot of people watched this or liked this, it was okay.
Sorry I Love You : Epic, Got away with a lot of stupid plots, got away with a lot of good plot, amazing, haters gon hate on my man Jung Kyung Ho (who has a better batting average now - I'm looking at you So-ji Sub, daaaanggg), ruined my plans every week - ruined my life
Drama City Special "My Older Brother" : Amazing, the best
Sang Doo, Let's Go To School : Delightfully heartbreaking and warm mushiness. The ending someone debated, which I thought was both humorous and soul-crushing.
Of them all My Older Brother is probably best for its brevity and overall inventive story. Second, MiSa and third I'll say Sang-doo as I watched it in 2003. Well I haven't since then so I can't be sure it holds up. I watch everything. Except for A Love to Kill. I mean I have priorities here.

Awww... There's such a picture of Lee Ki-woo out there? Isn't that like, too much? Only seen him in The Classic, where he epitomised adorkable.
OMOWTFWHAHUSAYHUHWISFCISDABESSSTTT!
Can only concede when it comes to Thank You (took me aaages to get past the first four eps, but once I did, I hit gold!) and MiSa. Both of them; la qualite!
My Older Brother, is that the short drama with Lee Min-ki and it's narrated by someone playing his kid brother or something? Roger that *jots down on neverending list of k-must-sees*.

Oh and Beating Heart is on my radar anyways, it has Bae Doo-na and Shin Sung-woo in it. Those two? One of the best kdrama couplings, ever!

Also for all the '"newbies"
out there, the Unofficial KBS series "Endless Love", which comprises
* Autumn in My Heart (2000)
* Winter Sonata (2002)
* Summer Scent (2003)
* Spring Waltz (2006).
It's a must see in order to gain a more in-depth knowledge about this dramas that help launch the "Hallyu" wave around the world.
From this 4 dramas "Summer Scent" is my favorite from all of them since my Second Favorite Korean actress is the lead (Son Ye-jin) in this drama, "Spring Waltz" is my second favorite, the lead actress is the girl from "Shining Inheritance" (Han Hyo Joo), the third one is 'Winter Sonata", and the last
"Autumn in my Heart" with (Moon Geun Young) playing the younger version of the lead character. They may not be their "Cup of Tea", for a lot people since some of this dramas are @10 years old, but after all this years they can still hold their ground against what is being produce know days, in some respects they are even better!!!!!!!

I think that I get what you're saying.
It's like people who like sonnets or haiku more than free style poetry. They're more fascinated by how people manipulate the rules instead of how they ignore them. I think I'm like that, too. I like knowing exactly what to expect, so that when surprises happen I'm genuinely shocked, vs. the kind of WTF feeling that a lot of dramas can give you. Maybe this is why I like Asian drama so much? It is very formulaic?
I can't watch all the new series, either, to be honest. Sometimes I can't tell you why, just that I don't like it. Just like I can't explain why I like Dr. Champ.

Well I am kinda the same, being to logical is one of my "Handicaps", since I can over analyzed something, and if all I want is pure "unadulterated Fluffy sugary Romance", than dramas like "Playful Kiss" will do for me, but if I want to be intellectually stimulated, than I like a story line with a decent, coherent, and cohesive, story line, and lately a lot of the New dramas have been everything but cohesive, take "Road #1", I was really anticipating this drama since "Kim Ha-neul" is my third favorite Korean actress, but after the third episode it was evident the it was lacking, and on the other hand "Comrades" turn out to be a far better drama in that genre!! So I know how you feel, we may like different genres but at the end of the day even my "love" for
"Kim Ha-neul" could not keep me watching "R#1", some dramas just do not gel quite right even when the cast have a lot of star power!!!!

Who is reading The Hunger Games trilogy?
I had the best discussion of His Dark Materials months ago here *sobs, my Lyra and Will*
Would love to chat if anyone is reading it. I'm midway through Catching Fire and I have HUGE reservations about what Collins is taking her story.
I can already say without reservation that she's a excellent writer, I think better than Rick Riordan and JK Rowling, but below Phillip Pullman. It would be an insult to all of these excellent writers of certain YA phenoms to lump Stephanie Meyer in here.
I know when I'm done I'm going to be rabidly wanting to start casting the upcming movie.
I'll be honest in saying that I am bi-polar shipping BOTH guys, but while my heart says guy1, my mind says guy2. Oh Katniss, you sure have it tough, and not just with respect to guys. The Quarter Quell? Aigoo.

Giant 49: Awesome episode. Firing on all cylinders. 'Nuff said.
Oh and MOAR Royar Crub shenanigans, sil-vous-plait.
It only took me all of four hours to finally work up the courage to watch it.
Courage. Rarrr!

You gotta watch 50. Like nowwwwwwww
I wish you watched previews. There's a particularly epic lulz-worthy scene for next week. I guess I will have to wait it out. But it could be my favorite.scene.ever.
Mi-joo was channeling some Marilyn Monroe in ep 50. Well, sans the hair; I think you'll know who wins crazy hair this week.
Giant was supposed to end today, but here we are - and on we go...still on the edge of my seat. Spoilers for this show: a double edged sword. Knowing is not really knowing half the battle here.

50th episode, chingu!!
[SPOILERS!]
You wanna know the best scene, ever? The scene when Min Hong-ki is handed a red rose, and CPY's looking like he's going to vomit. GOLD! http://i789.photobucket.com/albums/yy176/supah5/Giant/1-7.jpg (Feel your pain, dood, there was lame music, lame ambience and lamer company.)
And no need to look thus flabbergasted Min-woo, alas, 'tis true, you are a da... da... erm, daeryuk construction destroyer. ---And may the ghost of Daeryuk's dead president come bite YOU in the a**, and not bite the person in the previews, cos person in the previews is... well, sexy and sexy's gonna Bring It, next episode. Wheeee!
I digress, I think MW kinda redeemed himself for me, in the last couple of episodes... I don't know he's suddenly cooler and less of a tinman. Must've eaten something funny but lately I've started shipping all three OTPs, and-not-just-the-one-at-the-heart-of-the-story-which-leads-to-doomsville.

MW goes all breaking glassware when things are told to him, so it's no wonder they don't. Sheesh.
The look on CPY.. that was my favorite part too!

Yeah, that face, followed by MHK's rose-sniffing, euphoric bliss-face. Ahahaha! Add to that Cha Soo-jeong being cloyingly sweet. Seriously, if he hadn't made that face, I would have.
About MW, I liked that rain scene. I don't know, was it naïve of him? But bless him for giving it his utmost. And the Royal Club face-off, and the cockfight in the lobby between him and Gang-mo -- which Mi-joo ends up overhearing. Haha! Classic! That stuff will NEVER get old. I hope they continue the fist-fights even after they get their (possible?) happy endings, they can fight over who pays for dinner and stuff and then go smashing glasses and tables and stuff. Hurrah! Also GM's unabashed flirting with JY and the little smiles. Never thought I'd say this about anything in this show, but: squeeee!
On another note, really hope we get to see the 90s soon. If they jump from 1986-2010 it'll leave too big a gap inbetween. Sigh, so many things yet to be resolved. Looks like it'll keep its very final episodes to hone in on on Jun-mo and SM x CPY. Pace is still perfect, they've yet to really drag anything out.

Anyone else looking forward to the new drama 'Once Upon A Time in Saengchuri?'. It takes up Joseon X-Files spot, starting this Friday.
The only two actors I'll be watching out for are Lee Young-eun (adorbz!) and Kim Hak-chul (who's fecking hilarious in comedy).
Written by the dood behind the High Kick series (meh!) but judging from the trailer, it all looks pretty promising. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tUTm-9nOI8

Everyone is too busy with Mary stayed out all night. Except for me. I am disappointed in the lack of death metal or goth whatever music the main guy was supposed to be playing. For shame.
I wasn't super paying attention to that trailer, I almost mistook Lee Young Eun for Han Hyo Joo for a moment. I need sleep.
But I loved them in Summer Whispers (Ha Suk Jin & Lee Young Eun were together in that film) So I'll give this a watch.

I know man, I'm the same about it. It's not death metal at all, it's flower power hippy... cutesy stuff, and I'm afraid my cuteness tolerance doesn't extend beyond Ghibli films and Lee Gang-mo.
But I'm following your logic on this one; the anti-male harem rule. I'm gunna stick to that one, fast.
I like LYE in general, in another drama (which I won't say the name of) I fervently shipped her with Song Joong-ki (oh, his cuteness? Only acceptable when he sells it alongside his talent, only, honest) -- and they even got married in the end. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2665/4463589854_93abc11ca1_o.jpg No, the groom wasn't Suh Ji-suk.
But yeah, this sounds fun, and pretty original.
