Come join me in Kdrama Addict Anonymous (KAA).
The first step to any substance misuse is to ACKNOWLEDGE that you have a problem. And here in KAA they let us talk freely. It's not exactly the most brilliant move on the facilitators' part because in no time the group therapy session becomes heated with arguments from opposite sides. One side supports samdong, and the other prefers jingook.

Damn satisfying though.

The last session I attended ended up with the participants all giddy and anxious to have drama rewind marathons. It was the post-Dream High/My Princess recovery session. We were shown flash cards of Kim Soo Hyun and Mr. Hand Towel from various scenes of their latest dramas - for the purpose of overdose. But it did the opposite of what was expected.

Happy Friday All!

It'd be happier if the rain would stop, but I won't complain. I have a job, my bosses are AFK, the guy I can never reach for the Friday Report got back to me quickly (albeit after reading me a gentle riot act about not giving him the whole morning to give it to me; but hey, I got it), and I am this close to being able to catch up on Twinkle Twinkle/Sparkling/All That Glitters. (Personally, I prefer ATG for the title, but no one asked me and I forgot to vote at dramafever.)

MJP, you asked me about whether I take/keep notes at my desk. I thought it'd be a good idea if I showed you...and then I discovered photobucket is blocked at work. Le sigh. I'll try to remember when I get home. But I can describe it! It's the side of my computer tow with about 5 stickies in different colors and sizes, a couple of printed notes/instructions taped to the tower, a smidgen of the stickies on the edge of my monitor, and some of the notes I have re the phones on my cube-wall. And now that I've actually described...maybe not so interesting.

Also, update on the cute Asian guy: I'm pretty sure he's Chinese (as if that matters). Unfortunately, he works the later shift downstairs, so unless I need something from his officemate -- never enough -- I hardly ever see him. He's gotta be about 6', with a shaved head (I wonder why) and no facial hair. Um...anything else of note? I said a whole sentence to him yesterday when he was looking for someone! Ack, I need the other cute guy to come back. He's more reliable eye-candy ;)

In drama news, Lee Shin Young just found out that Ha Min Jae was "playing" her for the fool and is giving him the cold shoulder! E.G., I'm up to episode 8 in The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry. ;)

aww I miss that drama. Is the asian guy on the 26th floor? does he have a semi-pompadour, hyun bin dimples, mouth, eyes? Or does he have short hair and an ear piercing? or is he a bit older but with an excellent body and long legs?

Option 3 with some mods. No hair, I wouldn't be surprised if she has a piercing on the weekends, he has a fab body and ver' long legs. I actually think he may be a bit younger than me, but I'm awful at figuring this kind of thing out.

HI! HI! HI! HI! HI! HI! HI! HI! HELLO!!!

Sorry to read that it's raining where you are at. I mowed/edged/blowed (my 3 yr old bubble mowed) the front yard today. It's the first nice sunny day for about a week. It was cool too 66F degrees (too lazy to figure out how to make the little circle).

Tomorrow is my birthday!!! My present is my husband helping me get yard work done!!! OOOOOOHHHHHH!!! I am sssoooooooooo excited!!!!!

I look forward to being able to see the office stickies pic's. I really need to figure out how to work Flickr (can't share my pic's yet.) I think if I act like it is a Kdrama, I'll be able to focus enough time on it to learn how to do it.

So cute office co-worker is actually cute office co-workers? I moved on from Kang-ah to PANTYMAN in my Kdrama love. :-) Kang-ah was sweet and PANTYMAN IS SPICEY!!!!!!!!! Yum!!!

Oh, I skipped that part in TWHWTM when I ran through it last weekend. I'll have to go back and watch it because it's a good part!!!

What are your plans for the weekend? Working?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! (it's midnight here, so it's your birthday :)

There are at least 2 cute co-workers...one Asian, one Latino, both taken I'm sure. And who is this Pantyman of which you so highly speak???! Share!

Oh you, with the ability to do yardwork! I have no yard to work, but it'd be nice to put my plants out on the fire escape some time this spring. And I'm afraid the forget-me-nots are never going to bloom, though God knows they've had enough water.

Anywho, have a lovely birthday. Hurray for husbandly help in the yard :D

My weekend plans include getting keys made, lunch w/either friends or mom, laundry, and dodgeball with friends, not at all in that order!

Happy birthday!!! I would tell you to wish for something amazing, but you already have a hubby who sits through (and supports!) your obsession with Pantyman! You've made all the single fangirls decide we won't settle till we find the same :)

Have a wonderful day noona! :)

Happy Birthday!!!!!!
Hope it was happy and that all your days of all this year will be filled with joy with peace!

bourbon and Jomo,

Thanks for the great fun on the OT!!! It's one of the best presents I could ever have hoped for!

0

And rehearsal! I forgot about Sunday rehearsal, which I am very much returned from. We have a our big show on Weds, then I get to reclaim my Fridays for the summer. Woohoo!

It sounds like you had a good birthday :D Hurray! And I second bourbon...I am now adding to my list of Future Spouse Qualities is a man who supports my obsession. He doesn't have to sit and watch k-dramas with me (though I bet if I found him an action sageuk I could make it happen!), but he does have to appreciate my semi-obsessive love affair with them ;) Your hub sounds awesome.

When I was working a desk job, I did the exact same thing, until "Lean" Six Sigma came along. Then all the stickies went into the inside of the drawers, out of sight of management and visitors.

0

When one of my previous jobs moved into a new space, we got all "clean space"-y as well, though not for efficiency's sake. I ended up hiding my notes on the interior wall of my space. You'd have to be inside my area or the one behind me and looking out towards the hallway to see the notes :) A lot of my old notes did end up in the drawer, however. Somehow, not as helpful that way.

Romance Town is surprisingly good. I didn't expect to be interested and, to be honest, I only watched the first episode because I found the recap on here impossible to follow. But I really like it. It may be my favorite offering on the rare Quality KDrama Buffet Line that we're currently experiencing.

Lie To Me is also quite good, though I feel Yoon Eun Hye is overacting a bit. It may just be my "You'll Never Top Your Performance in Coffee Prince" bias rearing it's ugly head.

I watched an episode or two of Baby Faced Beauty and enjoyed it but haven't had a chance to get back to it. I'm trying to find a way to fit it in because I hear it's gotten quite good. Thank God for extended maternity leave.

I just absolutely loved 49 days... it is just oh so awesome in so many ways. Of course, it's not without flaws but overall, it was just really lovely and enjoyable even with it's very tragic and sad stories. I loved YK and YS so much. Scheduler & Han Kang -- you will be missed. I liked the HK - JH story too. All the actors made me want to cry with them... they were so raw and real. I will miss them. LYW did such an awesome job playing the 2 roles. :)

I had such high expectations for BL - cause of the great cast and of course the Hong sisters. Well, BL does not disappoint in the least. I'm really enjoying it but I haven't really gotten super into it (yet). Dokko Jin - you are just tooo funny.

Despite the ridiculous script and meandering scenes etc etc, I am totally hooked on LTM. I know, what is wrong with me? LOL Something about YEH & KJH together that has totally sucked me into it. It's really quite silly cause other than the actors, everything else pretty much sucks and if it were anyone else, I don't think I'd even watch it. But all week, it's been this drama out of everything that I've been rewatching scenes and itching to see more. btw - I have never seen a KJH drama before, but I know he has good acting chops. I do love YEH in rom-coms. I really hope that the story gets better.

49 Days for me, was its message. I am a romantic at heart and really wanted JH and HK to get together but this drama wasn't about a love story. It was emotionally satisfying to me on so many levels and I think that the entire cast, especially LJW and JHJ did a fabulous job. What a dream team of a cast! I've got a few friends into it and we've been having "K-Drama Night" at my house, complete with bottles of soju and ramen. I'm re-watching it because of them and we are now on Ep 5. It's interesting to hear the questions and comments from them, knowing what I already know. I'll explain parts where its not clear, otherwise, they will have to wait to have their questions answered by continuing to watch the drama.

49 Days for me is MY FAVORITE drama to date. Going to take a break and wait for the newer dramas to get further along. I've now got my Wednesday and Thursday nights back! :)

Aaah asking the impossible!!! As I Kaedejun said in her first Romance Town Recap - it is the all dramas, no sleep season!

But if I must decide:

1. Best Love
2. Lie to me/ Baby Faced Beauty / Romance Town

Seems I can't do it after all...

And City Hunter seems to be quite interesting, too, sigh.

I am desperately trying not to read the ep20 recap before I can finish 49 Days...this is going to be a LONG weekend away from home! (gah, weddings!)

I would like to say, though, God bless whoever was in charge of 49 Days' soundtrack. It is lovely, poignant and a wonderful example of what background music should be, unlike some dramas I could mention (ahem*My Princess*).

I don't tend to like tearjerker dramas, but boy has 49 Days delivered something amazing. I'm a little late on the bandwagon because I wanted to marathon it, but I'm hardcore committed now.

That's all. :)

I cried so much yesterday as I watched and rewatched the last episode, I couldn't believe it... I felt so depressed that I had invested so much into the Ji Hyun/Kang relationship and that it wouldn't ever come into fruition made me sad. However the way they wrote it, the special picnic, the fact that she got to say her I love you's to her parents and shared time with Yi Kyung who'd been her blood related unnie without her knowing it was precious... I somehow wished that she'd found out, but I get that it's ok even if she didn't because she loved her even without that tie to her. I knew that YK was her sister, I was kind of expecting it so I wasn't disappointed in the fact that it existed as much as I was in the execution, since the drama had done so well in surprising us and moving the story on without relying so much on the k-drama staple of coincidences... aah well it's alright... but really this has made me cry buckets and buckets, and I'm so glad that Yi Kyung and Kang didn't become a couple, it just doesn't work... I'll miss seeing Jo Hyun Jae, Lee Yo Won and most of all Jung Ill Woo every week... they were the back bone of this drama and now I won't be able to watch them... I'm having Post Drama Depresion TT__TT

heyyy everyone! I've been addicted to kdramas since my friends introduced me to boys over flowers, and I have to say I am very dissapointed in myself to only have found this amazing site a few days ago. where were you hiding Dramabeans???

on the other hand, I just finished 49 days and it was one of those dramas that was truly special. although I am not truly happy with the ending, I respect the writer's decision and understand that such a finish is fitting for this drama. however, the problem with finding a drama as beautiful as this is that afterwards it leaves you craving for more, yet all the others pale in comparison. I tried so hard to get into dramas like Lie to Me, and Best Love, but I keep comparing it to 49 Days. These types of dramas (49 Days) only come once in a while, and when I find one my heart immediately sort-of snaps its fingers. "thats the one. you gotta watch that one." boys over flowers was the first, with a few following, and more recently there was IRIS, ATHENA, and Sign.

don't get me wrong, they were all AMAZING. however in the in-between periods, i'm always searching for a drama i never seem to find. lie to me and best love and such are really good kdramas, and I know I would love them if the timing was different. but i just can't bring myself to get past the first few episodes.

what do I do? has this ever happened to anyone before? :s

Welcome, wishingstar!

Glad you found DB and the OT!!!

In answer to your question, if you don't like the kdrama, drop it for a few episodes. Then pick it back up again to see if you like the current episode, if you do, then resume watching it. If you don't then just drop it permanently because there is something you will like better, wait and see.

WELCOME to DB!

I would like to echo MJP noona. If you can't seem to watch the first few episodes, then you should take a breather. I was having trouble with 49 Days because it started slow at first. I like to stick to a drama for at least 5-6 episodes before deciding whether it's worth my time. Which in the case of 49 days is TOTALLY worth my time.
Orrrrr... you can be lazy like me and just read the episode recaps. When your eyes & hands starts to get itchy from NOT being properly satisfied, then pick up the drama & watch it again. Hope that helps.

I get KDrama overload sometimes too, esp after a particularly satisfying drama and would feel reluctant to start ANY KDrama...at these times I would stay away from them(yes..I meant it) and move on to something else...maybe Jdoramas, TVB(HK), Taiwan or China's dramas. Because every country has a different style in filming their dramas it's like a breath of fresh air...then after sometime when I come back to KDramas, they'd feel like a long lost friend and I'd lose myself in them again...that's partly why I'm not always a live-viewer...

Distance makes the heart grow fonder...that's how it work for me....maybe you could try it?

Some thoughts:

I saw the article on Shin Mina and immediately started to miss Mi-ho and Woong-ah.

I was one of those unhappy with the ending of 49 Days. It wasn't because it was horrible. On the contrary, it was well-written and had a good message. Notwithstanding the long-lost daughter story element, which seemed like it was scraped up at the last minute as a fan service, it was better than most dramas' in my recent memory. I think I feel this way because I loved this drama so much. It's just that I was expecting a totally different ending, a more awesome and, perhaps, a happy one. I know the show didn't present itself as a romantic comedy or even a light-hearted drama. There were dark undertones from the very beginning. You know there's going to be a death or two. So I was under no illusion that a happy ending was a for sure thing. I think had it been a movie (a long one) or a novel, I probably would've loved it. With a movie, I often just go along for the ride and because it's continuous and often completed in one viewing, there's very little time for thought and reflection until after it's done. Well, unless you're neurotic and have access to the pause button, there's practically no philosophising. With books you set the pace on how the story unfolds. You get tired, you put it down. Or you read it all the way through in one sitting. Sometimes it's so good you couldn't put it down. Also little or no time for musing until the end (unless you're reading it for class).
With serialized TV dramas, there's plenty of time between episodes to speculate and form theories on how the story is going to be resolved. We can go to Dramabeans and share our thoughts and predictions to an audience and they share with you their own insights, and this thing grows like a bubble. It becomes this organic thing. More speculations and discussions feed this bubble and it gets bigger and bigger. By the finale, expectations would be at fever pitch and everyone gets wild with nervous anticipation and speculations. Is this going to be the most awesomest ending ever? Even beyond our wildest imagination? We go through this only for our bubble to be burst when we reach the end. More often than not I'm left with a feeling of "Is that it?", and forever questioning the wisdom and decision of the writer.

Thinking about sad endings last night, I couldn't help but think about the unforgettable ending of the novel Time Traveler's Wife. If it were treated another way, with the author giving it a happy or even a bittersweet open-to-interpretation ending, would it have left such an indelible mark on my psyche as it did? Contrast this with My Girlfriend is a Gumiho's emotionally satisfying, pay-offy, fan-servicy ending. There were rumors that the original tragic ending was changed at the last second because of the fans' clamouring for a fairy tail ending, which they got. Imagine if they took it another direction: where Mi-ho could only appear to Dae-woong during a solar eclipse. We could've had an epilogue with a globetrotting Dae-woong chasing after eclipses just to have a bit more time with Mi-ho. And he does this until his last days. We see him old and gray meeting with an eternally youthful Mi-ho who still enthusiastically exclaims "Woong-ah!" Wouldn't that have been a fantastic, and more memorable ending, though sad? Still, I like how it actually ended. It was better for my sanity :D

LOL!!! Those are SOME thoughts!!! I like it!!!

Thanks for sharing. I haven't watched MGFIAG.

With The Time Traveler's Wife, I wasn't disappointed with the ending the way I was with 49 Days. I think the storyline of the time traveler himself was so tragic that it was a relief (to me) for him to die. It was also tragic that his child then had to go through the same type of lifestyle. Naked, continually facing the unknown, it didn't matter what health condition the body held, it travelled anyway. Way, way, way different than the 49 Days situation.

Don't go looking for single incidents people mention like The Kiss when you haven't watched the whole drama. When scenes are watched out of context they are not nearly as satisfying. A story leads up to certain points in the drama and only then it is possible to savour them as a they are meant to be.

0

I think in the world of 49 days, there is a belief of a "next life", so I'd like to think that one day they'll all be reincarnated as a group of close friends. Maybe YK and JH will be sisters who get to grow up together and HK and YS will be BFFs.

But really, I didn't like the whole Yi Kyung is Ji Hyun's long-lost sister angle. It was not needed. I could believe everything about a ghost taking over a woman's unconscious body, but I couldn't believe that (rather rushed) storyline of a sister that wasn't mentioned until the last 30 minutes of a 20 episode show.

you know when I read the recap I agreed with you. but when I saw the episode I liked it. I understand why it was there and I think yikyung's disbelief was the perfect thing to bring it out of the"shark-jump" territory.

On behalf of all the guys with no facial hair & those unable to grow facial hair, I would like to welcome CSW to the club!
Dokko Jin makes women develop a weird fetish over men with facial hair, it's UNFAIR for No Facial Hair club members. Glad you gor rid of it, dude.

This is a link to a CNN report about the rise in plastic surgery in South Korea, as man and woman seek to transform themselves, as they seek a more "Western Look." People from China and other Asian country's are flying in to Seoul, to have eye, nose, and lip surgery, on order to look as they put it in their words more like American man, and woman.

I must say for a non Asian person like my self this is one of the most disturbing reports that I have seen, ass one of the interviewee put it this attitude of Koreans and Chinese, is an expression of "Cultural Self Hatred," and is something not to be proud about. Indeed this is a very sad report!!! : O {

@ahjummabunny!

You are absolutely right, that beauty comes in all sizes, shapes, and ethnicity's, I guess is hard for me since even tough I am ethnically 100% Hispanic, I have white skin, so if you see me you would think that I am of Caucasian decent, I guess since I do not base my self worth in the way I look, It is really hard for me to understand the concept of having plastic surgery to alter my look, I love the Asian cultures as a whole, I believe that the Gods made a wonderful creation when they created the Asian race specially the tridimensional beauty of the Asian woman, but I have never desire to to look Asian, or any other race, I mean I am like all humans I am not always satisfied with the way I look, but I do not let that ruin my day let alone my whole life!!!!! : O }

"It is really hard for me to understand the concept of having plastic surgery to alter my look"

But then again, you are also a male.

"to look as they put it in their words more like American man, and woman."

I used to buy that too, but the Western-centric argument is about as bogus as Heidi Montag's boobs. Asian beauty culture value tiny faces and extremely fair skin; you can read poetry going back a millennia and those aspects are written down. The eyes are more controversial, but in Chinese culture, having large double-eyed eyes (more typical of Southern Chinese and Hong Kong) was always considered very attractive.
