Myung-wol the Spy unable to complete shoot, to air special

Oy vey. The reports are conflicting, the response is growing heated, and confusion abounds over the immediate fate of Myung-wol the Spy, which was thrown into chaos over the weekend when its star, Han Ye-seul, didn’t appear for her scheduled shoots.

The trouble began on Saturday the 14th when Han, who was scheduled for an early morning shoot, didn’t appear. Her side seemed as confused as everyone else, and stated that the shoots had gone so far into the night that she only had two hours after being released before her next day’s call time. Then stories emerged that Han and the PD, Hwang In-hyuk, have been at odds since the very start, which has only grown more contentious as filming went on. They’d fought fiercely on set earlier in the week, and Han had repeatedly requested a PD switch. A new PD was brought onboard but PD Hwang remained, which appears to have been a halfhearted non-attempt to appease her.

According to a production rep, Han expressed her problems with the schedule, and when those differences were not resolved, told the director that she wouldn’t make the Saturday shoot. The explanation was her ill health due to the shooting schedule, but apparently the crew still expected her, and the cast was in standby mode until shooting was eventually cancelled.

Han didn’t shoot on the 15th, either, and with the drama up to its neck in live shoots, that left the show with only 40% of its scenes shot for this coming week. KBS and the producers met on Sunday for emergency meetings to try to resolve the conflict, but ultimately the show was too far behind and they decided to go with the time-honored solution to many a last-minute broadcasting emergency: a special episode, whipped up to fill the timeslot.

That’s the plan for Monday; producers are still not sure what to do with Tuesday’s broadcast.

Okay, so those are the facts. To be honest, this story doesn’t add up for me, which is why I hesitate to make any declarations. I recall that Han had made the request before the drama began that the shoots adopt a less killer schedule, along the lines of a five-day workweek. Those rumors faded once the drama got under way, which suggests that she found a way to reconcile herself with the schedule. Or perhaps (and now I speculate) she was assured of a lighter load, only to be worked to the bone anyway.

I do think that Han’s behavior is clearly unprofessional, but because of the way this story has been reported and sensationalized in the past day, I’m not ready to condemn her yet. She would have to know how damaging to her image it would be to refuse to shoot — and she’s already getting lots of heat from netizens — so I wonder how bad it must be for her to risk it anyway. Then again, maybe she didn’t think. Who knows what the real story is?

As we know, the K-drama live-shoot system is hectic, possibly dangerous, and definitely crazy. It’s flawed, but as long as productions believe that the rewards (freedom to adjust on the fly, cater to ratings) outweigh the costs, they’ll keep doing it as long as they can get away with it. But one can’t help but wonder when the broadcasters will get sick enough of the madness to impose some rules from the top down to create some safety nets. In the case of Myung-wol the Spy, it’s one actress refusing to shoot, but in other cases, a delay of just a day or two from accidents and injuries can take a drama off the air (see: Boys Before Flowers, You’ve Fallen For Me). Surely we need more buffer time than that.

If Myung-wol fails to air this week, on the upside (glass half full!), perhaps they won’t need their two-episode extension after all. The story doesn’t need the extension, and it was more out of consideration for follow-up drama Poseidon than for Myung-wol anyway. If Myung-wol resumes broadcasting next week, it can end with Episode 16 and still let Poseidon premiere as scheduled.

There, I turned that frown upside-down. It’s sort of a twisted grimace, but hey, it’s not ALL bad news, right?

(Also: I say this because of the massive derail in the thread below, but let me just remind you to please, please keep things civil. Arguments fine, attacks not fine. Don’t make me come over there.)

This might be the best time for me to ask this, being a kdrama blog newbie and all... I've come across several references to HYS and Lee Da Hae and how much they are disliked, but I don't know why and I can't tell if it's the netizens that don't care for them or the actual industry. I've only seen them in dramas and I liked them there so I was wondering what the stink is about. Can anyone fill me in? Thanks!

The thing with Lee Da Hae is that she is known for dropping dramas and movies half way through. This is mostly because the parts she played had a really limited role, maybe 2 or 3 minutes parts in the drama. The production company is then forced to replace the part with another actress. That got her a bad reputation amongst the people, but she's still wanted as an actress because she's a high profile actress.

I've never really heard much about Han Ye Seul being a diva until this mess started happening. She's had plenty of dramas without much drama so I don't know what happened. There have been a couple reports of her being rude and disrespectful but they've come from unreliable sources so I can't confirm anything. Han Ye Seul's also known for being the CF Queen, so she's highly wanted.

Thanks to you two also! It's nice to know I'm not the only new person here- and the links are so helpful! I absolutely love this site- everyone is so helpful and informative :D I just can't even imagine the mind job these celebrities have to deal with on a daily basis, you know? There are many links here on DB concerning LDH. You might want to take some time and read the various postings here about her. Just type her name into the search box. Also, look up East of Eden, her movie - it was the basis for a lot of her problems.

Thanks for the info and for pointing me in the right direction - I appreciate it! I found them so likeable in their roles, so when I'd come across something negative about them online I was kind of shocked. Sad but true. I fall for that actor charm hook, line and sinker every time. Isn't horrible when you realize you've sat through hours of something that by all accounts was god awful but you were too captivated by eye candy to realize it? The brain kicks back in after the lust fades away and shames you. Damn brain.

I can't believe how big this is turning out to be. Now that she has left the country and her own company is suing her, I have a strong feeling that this whole thing isn't about following or not following some contract. There must be something major going on- whether externally or within HYS's mental state (an ill-timed nervous breakdown?). No actress would shoot herself in the foot like this unless something was seriously wrong and she has never had a history of such bad behavior after being in this business for years. And here people are acting like she's Lindsay Lohan, without the drugs and alcohol.

I'm curious why the PD would have hired her in the first place if her contract stipulates that she won't have to work weekends. I know of no drama in live-shoot that has a 5 day week after they hit midpoint. How can he even promise such a thing when she is the titular character with 90% of the scenes?

And I'm tired of people bring up Park Shin Hye as some shining example of how HYS should act. Don't get me wrong, I love Park Shin Hye! But I don't think it's right to think it's a completely good and noble thing to go back to the shooting after one has been injured. In the k-ent business, even if you're throwing up blood, you're expected to perform. Saying that this is the shining example of what actors should do is just taking advantage of the actors and putting inhumane pressure on them.

Agree 100% about PSH. I was really surprised to read that she had gone back to filming so quickly. Granted, she might not have been severely injured, but I think it speaks to a very odd attitude in the industry.

there is news that Han Yeseul went to L.A. ... so i don't think that she will come back and do the drama at all...

they should just kill off her character... the last scene of the last episode so far has her pointing & shooting a gun on herself... instead of blanks... why not say that it had real bullets instead... somebody switched it & that caused her death... (that situation happened in real life before anyway)

or if people want her character to still be alive, she could fake her death and come back with a new face, therefore a new actress takes over the role....

People especially Korean netizens need to stop bitching about Han Ye Seul. They are not the ones that have to stay up late to film a drama, and if HYS was getting sick because of the filming schedule, then a person's health is well above other's entertainment. Also a website I read said that the Production company said that 80% was the PD's fault and 20% the actress. I think I would have gone mad at working in such an environment, and would have done the same thing as HYS. Again Eric was in a lot less scene than HYS so he should stop talking smack about her. I'm all for HYS so kudos to her for standing up to this corrupt abusive business.

i'm not sure what's the real entire story is, but i'm sure HSY didn't wish for this to turn out this way either. i love her as an actress. but still personally, it is a little (not irresponsible) but disappointing that she leaves in this manner, what ever the problem she has with the PD or whatever, they should settle it without effecting the other cast and crew. and if she still thinks leaving is the only choice, then do it the proper way.

Regardless, I do feel bad for the other actors, especially Eric, for whom this is his post-military debut.

On a related note, this probably does not bode well for the HYS and SJK movie, Penny-Pinching Romance. It'll most likely join What's Up as movie/drama I was eagerly anticipating watching, but won't ever be able to see.

Regardless of whether HYS has a legitimate, reasonable explanation for her behavior, she has effectively blacklisted herself for life in the K-ent industry.

In reading the latest news via Joong Ang Ilbo, the following are what I can gather:

1. While it's entirely possible that HYS got on an LA-bound plane, there is no confirmation of it. Only that a Leslie Kim was booked for such a flight.

2. Her mother rushed from LA to Seoul on the 16th (by Korean date) to join effort with her 소속사 to negotiate for resumption of shooting on the 17th. (What the heck is 소속사? I thought it was her management but all the rumors have said Sidus has all but abandoned her, so I'm totally confused.) Anyway, people within the 소속사 do not know her whereabouts and have a hard time reconciling that she'd have left the country when her mother was en route, about which some speculate HYS may not have been aware.

Totally crazy. Something is seriously wrong here.

She might have her reasons for not appearing on set but according to a comment by a crew member made in Jul, she does seems like someone self-centered and unprofessional.

"I understand that actresses are stupid, but while we’re shooting Eric says his lines but she won’t do hers a lot of the time; she says she doesn’t want to do things that make her look funny so she won’t say her lines. She came all the way to far away Mungyeong, turned off her manager’s cell phone, and they just left the set together; because of that the other actors/staff had to put up with a really tight schedule and that made everyone tired. They had to go back to Mungyeong to film that scene. She wanted less scenes with her in them because she’s tired and asked instead to extend Eric’s scenes. In the scenes where she has to appear with Eric together she doesn’t show any consideration for Eric; she just goes in to quarrel with the director. Filming for the drama’s plainly going to be mostly all-nighters and the drama will practically be broadcast live, but she says she wants a 5 day workweek and she also wants us to finish up filming for the day everyday at midnight. We have to build up the Myeongwol-Kang Woo relationship and continue the melo story but she makes Eric look stupid because she doesn’t even try to understand what the script is about. All the news came out because of her but the next day she didn’t even look apologetic and she went around proudly. She never wants to do anything that makes her look funny or bad; in the scene where she had to get hit with eggs she treated the stuntman so badly when there was nothing wrong and she made the stuntman film the scene for her. Sidus can’t control her, so in the articles written against Han Yeseul they made Eric look bad too along with her when he’s trying his best. The atmosphere at the set is great when Han Yeseul is not there but when she comes in, it changes; it settles down. Even when we try to tell Han Yeseul’s staff and the production company about this she just acts as she pleases. If she does it one more time I think I’m going to swear directly in her face next time I see her. I’m sorry this is so unorganized, I’m so mad."

Well this comment might not be true, so read with a grain of salt.

HYS may not speak on this matter soon. She may choose to not speak for a long time, except to her close friends. Hence many will never know the whole story.

For an established actress to take things to this extend, she must have taken enough as a person. Before she is an actress, she is a person.

I have not watched this drama, but from the recaps I can tell she's doing a great job. If she argues with with director on set, I'd (like to) would think she's defending her character and hence her role as an actress in the drama. May not be the most politically correct thing to do, but as least she gives a damn and she speaks for her mind and thoughts.

The shooting / production system sucks. Every one suffers - the weak ones suffer the most.

I bid you well, HYS. Peace be with you.

Wow I stepped away from this blog and I have to say I am a bit appalled by some of the immaturity and mud-slinging I am seeing here not only at HYS but at other commenters as well. Some of the type of comments I have read here I expect to see on sites like allkpop were the commenters are usually teenage idol fangirls and fanboys with nothing better to do. Usually I see a much more mature group of people here which is why I like this site so much.

Now to the whole issue, the only people who know what is going on is the PD and Han Ye Seul, the companies, the cast, and the fellow staff have more of an idea of what is going on but only the people involved really know what is what. Even the media only knows what people who choose to speak to them tell them and only tell the public what will make a good story so until the PD or HYS speak up I tend to take everything with a grain of salt cause at the end of the day its hearsay as to what really happened that caused her to leave. To all of the people saying this person said that, or i know someone who has worked with her, its all hearsay, unless you are on the drama set or CF set, etc, and have worked with her in person, how on earth do you know what she is like or how she is to work with, you are only hearing the opinion someone made of her and trust me how one person sees someone is very different than how another will see the same thing. This is my first time watching HYS's work, so I am not some crazy fangirl but the vitriol here is sad. I mean all we know as facts is that she and the PD had issues and that according to kbs it was mostly the PD's fault, we also know that she wanted the PD replaced and that didn't happen, we also know that she was late on the 14th , didn't show on the 15th, and is now in the states. Everyone agrees that regardless of the reason it was unprofessional for her to leave the show like that but as to her reasons for doing so we may never know. Those are the facts any opinion as to why this is happening is hearsay and frankly I don't really trust anything from KBS with their track record. What if HYS was extremely depressed and new that workload was making it worse and with them not trying to help her get the rest she needed maybe she had gotten to a point that she knew staying with the drama would worsen her depression and be detrimental to her mental and physical health so she chose to leave because she thought she didn't have any other option. I am not saying this is the case, but what if. Or maybe the PD did something to her, maybe she is just being a diva, maybe she is in fact in a relationship and had gotten pregnant who knows, the possibilities and speculations are endless.

Maybe I am naive but I would like to believe that most people have common sense and logic , so I find it hard to believe that this was a rash decision. To essentially take a poop on a ten-year successful career doesn't make sense unless there is a very personal reason to do so, one we may never know. To the people that say she did this to retire early, I doubt that, her contract with sidus HQ is almost up, she could of just finished the drama and then retire, why risk her and her family's reputation just so she can retire early . I mean if you see how we, the general international public are responding, can you imagine what korean-americans who follow the korean news are responding, so I highly doubt she did this just to leave early.

Second.

I wrote the following on A Koala's Playground:

She sounds mentally, emotionally, and physically wrecked. You try going there. Not everyone can pull it off. She happened to be one of those who couldn’t.

Earlier today, I was talking about organic chemistry being the class used to weed out potential pre-med students. I remember some of the most intelligent students dropping like flies after orgo. I myself had to give up on something I’d worked very hard to attain, mainly because my body wouldn’t let me go on.

This is a reality of life. It sucks for everyone involved and she’ll face the harsh consequences of her desperate actions, but netizens acting as if she owes them her firstborn is ridiculous.

I’m glad she’s out. I feel sorry for her and regret losing her since I’ve liked her work, but ultimately I hope she can find recuperate and find a way to move forward.

&

1. Had the outcome of this weekend been her corpse rather than her landing safely in LA, those who are now so quick to call her a diva would have been bemoaning losing such a promising actress, decrying the brutal working conditions so pervasive in K-ent industry, and tarring and feathering KBS and Hwang PD as the big bad Confucian patriarch personified. Hwang PD and KBS are so lucky that they get to play the 피해자/plaintiff.

2. The consequences for the drama SMY are at this point separate from HYS’s fate. They – as the Show itself and as individual human beings who’ve all endured immense challenges – need to focus on how to move forward despite these tremendous setbacks. If the Show or various individuals find that they cannot, I wouldn’t be surprised. I wish the best for Eric and others for whom so much was riding on this drama.

I think whatever her reasons are, she should at least have enough decency to make an official stand or statement out of respect to the rest of the cast and crew.
If she really IS that unwell or depressed or whatever problems she's having, she should have had someone she trusted to make a statement on her behalf without leaving things hanging in the air.
I've read many comments saying she's gutsy for standing up for herself against the system and yes, if that's what she is really doing but I do consider it somewhat cowardly to just fly off like that with a measly "I'm sorry, it's all my fault. Have a good life" left to her friends.
No one is saying that the live shoot system is not flawed and not horribly taxing to everyone involved but to just leave like that doesn't make her the better person. I just think as a grown woman and as a veteran working in this very system for years now should know better than to just run off like that without a word.

I don't know if HYS is depressed, but it would be very challenging for someone suffering from major depression to put together any statement. If a complete nervous breakdown, it's a wonder she had the wherewithal to get herself on a plane to LA. She would have had to been in survival mode, in which case getting to a safe place is the sole challenge, the only thing on which such a person can focus.

Who knows. I'll be shocked if we get any answers any time soon.

Judging by the pictures of her in LA, she doesn't look like she's in the middle of a breakdown. But that is just what it looks like to me. I just feel that it's is not plausible that she doesn't have anyone she trusts at all, that can speak up on her behalf since Sidus looks to be as pissed off as KBS and looks not likely to do anything for her.
Anyway, this debacle is really ... unbelievable.

Yes, she's smiling in those photos. Doesn't mean that she's not suffering emotionally or psychologically. Have you never laughed or smiled inappropriately? If I were her, I too would be smiling from cathartic relief. Heck, I might even yell and shed tears of momentary joy. All of which would be indications that she - an actress who's fully aware that image is everything - is not ok.

Like I said, it just LOOKS like that to me. Never said she's not suffering at all. Anyway, her being depressed is mere speculation by most of us and no one knows what is going through her head except her.
All I'm saying is she's handling it badly.

0

She may not be depressed. She may just have had a nervous breakdown. I think she clearly had the second. (The first, yes, only she would know, and even that's questionable.) No one in his/her right mind does what she did. If she didn't even communicate with her mother - who's now in Seoul rather than LA - that she was coming, she snapped.

Either way, it's unreasonable to expect people whose logical capacity is compromised to act logically. (Whoo! What a twister that was!)
