Scent of a Woman: Episode 8

I think before this episode, the tango was a stand-in, a euphemism for a lot of things, but there are no longer any spaces to read between the lines now. I think the appropriate expression is: Oh, get a room already. YOWZA.

EPISODE 8 RECAP

Yeon-jae confesses to Eun-seok that despite trying not to, she likes Ji-wook. Eun-seok sighs, masking his own heartbreak, and tells her that she should be saying this to Ji-wook, not him.

Ji-wook, who’s been eavesdropping this whole time, gets caught up in her confession and starts to take a step towards her… but then Yeon-jae replies: “It doesn’t mean anything. He’s marrying someone else.” That stops him in his tracks, and he watches Eun-seok turn to see him, and then take her away.

Meanwhile Mom’s date is going swimmingly, as they sit down to dinner. Mom puts a piece of live wriggling octopus in her mouth and it gets stuck in her throat (Ew, worst nightmare).

The doctor has to give her the Heimlich so she’ll spit it back out, which sends her packing immediately. This is why I don’t eat things that are still alive. Recently alive is good enough for me.

Yeon-jae promises to return the favor if Mom’s date went well, and Eun-seok starts to ask about Ji-wook. She clarifies that he wasn’t the one to sue her or give her the money, and he wonders if maybe he didn’t butt in where he shouldn’t have. Aw.

Yeon-jae sits in the dark for a while to brood, and Mom comes home, burying herself in bed out of mortification. Meanwhile Ji-wook tosses and turns all night, unable to sleep after hearing Yeon-jae’s confession to Eun-seok.

He heads to work the next day and after another round of uninspired ideas, decides that Yeon-jae’s last unfinished project with the planning team is the best they can come up with. He also announces (out of nowhere) that Yeon-jae wasn’t responsible for Wilson’s ring because it was never lost. Uh, did anyone ask?

He has his secretary call Yeon-jae in to see him, though he adds not to tell her that he asked her to come. So… someone else called her to your office? You’re dumber than I thought.

He fidgets nervously like a big dork as he waits for her to arrive. She remains aloof as she sits down to ask what he wants, and he explains that they’re seeing her project through, and asks her to come back to work.

She turns him down, and he reminds her that she said it was a job that she wanted to protect for a long, long time. Without explaining further, she tells him that even if she were to return, she wouldn’t be able to do that.

He’s clearly not getting the answer he wants, so he starts yelling at her to just listen to him. Oh, okay. Pffft. He even tries apologizing for the other night.

She turns him down flat and gets up to go, so he finally yells, “You said you wanted to see me! So I’m giving you that chance!” Aaaaaargh, what the hell is with you and your asshat remarks? I’m getting tired of it.

Shaking, she asks if he heard what she said. He confesses that he heard everything. They share a charged silent moment, which gets interrupted by Dad’s untimely entrance. He interrupts them to ask Ji-wook about when he’s going shopping for engagement rings, which is pretty much the worst possible thing he could say.

Yeon-jae excuses herself and walks out, and Ji-wook runs after her, but can’t catch up to her in time.

After having being so totally crushed, Eun-seok goes back to his grumpypants ways to cover up his big bleeding heart. He finds the other doctors and nurses laughing at the latest webtoon starring him, and they tease that he must have some hidden manly charm.

They show him the cartoon, and it features him dancing the tango with Yeon-jae. He storms into the room to yell at Yeon-jae’s bunkmate Hee-joo (the one with the crush on him), and totally takes all his anger and frustration out on her, demanding her to take them all down at once. Aw, you big meanie.

Yeon-jae walks up to hear the tail end of his yelling, and when they talk he’s still in a sour mood. She asks if he knows what happened on Mom’s date because she won’t talk about it, and he coldly tells her that she choked on some live octopus, and wonders if it was necessary to come all this way to ask him that.

She gives him some doggie treats for Malbok-ie, saying that she realized she hadn’t paid him enough attention since leaving him in Eun-seok’s care. He softens a little at that, but then she tells him that he was too harsh with Hee-joo, who’s young and sick with cancer.

Back on the defensive, he asks if being a cancer patient excuses you to do anything you want. He snaps at her to stop concerning herself with him and figure out her own mess — liking a man who’s going to marry someone else. Ouch.

Angry tears brimming, she says, “I must look pathetic in your eyes.” He doesn’t relent: “Well aren’t you?” and walks away. Aaaaaargh.

He stops to look back at her, probably realizing that he’s lashing out, but turns and keeps walking ahead with a sigh. Oh, Poopy-seok. You have the emotional maturity of a nine-year old.

Yeon-jae heads to the tango studio to clear up her crappy mood, and asks her instructor Veronica how long it’ll take her to dance like her. She sighs to hear the answer six years, but Veronica adds that it can be shortened if she dedicates the time to it.

At the same time, Ji-wook arrives outside the jewelry shop. He looks inside and sees Sae-kyung sitting there, and as his hand comes up to open the door… he stops. He can’t face it, or her, and whirls around and leaves.

He calls Yeon-jae, who doesn’t hear her phone because she’s dancing. Veronica answers for her, and doesn’t let him talk to her, but now he knows where she is. He spins the car around and zooms to the studio.

Veronica slyly leaves Yeon-jae alone while she and her partner go out for dinner, so when Ji-wook arrives, he sees her dancing all alone.

He walks up to her, intense with focus, tearing off his jacket and rolling up his sleeves in one fluid movement. Without a word, he puts his arm around her waist and pulls her toward him. Rawr.

She takes a step back, so he moves forward, in that same step they learned in the beginning, now fraught with all their unfulfilled longing. He takes the lead, maybe for the first time ever, and they dance.

Good grief, so this is why they invented tango. I’m pretty sure she’s gonna drop a baby, any minute now. Seriously, all that denial of feelings now seems worth it, for the tango foreplay alone. Hot damn.

They finally get to kissing distance, and he starts to lean in. He closes his eyes. She closes hers. He inches forward and they stay frozen like that.

He stops, noses touching, lips just barely apart. Trembling, he says, “How are you going to stop your feelings, when you’re like this?” It’s unclear whether he’s saying it to her or himself, maybe both.

And then he walks out, leaving her with her arms held out in the space where he used to be. Gah, it’s so much worse than if he’d never shown up.

He goes straight to Sae-kyung’s place to wait for her outside, and she screams at the top of her lungs, insane with rage at having been made to wait around for him. He tells her to break the engagement, and the wedding too of course.

That catches her off-guard and she counters that she has no intention of doing that, since it doesn’t matter which guy she marries; it’s all the same to her. Wow, that’s a sad statement on your life, princess.

But he tells her that he’s trying to be nice – if he breaks the engagement it’ll wound her pride, so he’s offering her the chance to break it herself. How come you can manage to be a gentleman to the girl you hate, but you can’t ever manage to be more than a total ass to the woman you love?

Anyway, she threatens him with the only real thing she has in her arsenal—money. She tells him that when Daddy hears about this, he could crush Ji-wook’s company and take everything away. He doesn’t even flinch: “I don’t care. Do as you like.” Ha. I suppose his indifference comes in handy at a time like this?

Ji-wook broods and then gets all hot ‘n’ bothered thinking about their tango. Yeah, you’re not the only one, buddy. Yeon-jae takes out her bucket list, sighing as she looks at the last two on her list, to do all this with the person she loves, and to close her eyes in the arms of the one she loves.

She heads out in the morning, shocked to find Ji-wook parked out in front of her house, sleeping. Ha, did you spend the night there?

He doesn’t deny that he’s here to see her (Perhaps asking Sae-kyung for the breakup has FINALLY launched him firmly out of Denial Land?) and gives her Wilson’s ring as his excuse for stopping by. He conveys Wilson’s message that it’s a lucky ring, but it’s stopped bringing him luck, so he’s passing it on to her. How lucky are we talking here? Like beat-cancer lucky?

He offers to drop her off wherever she’s going, with the lame excuse that he’s headed out of her neighborhood anyway, and then to cover up his own awkwardness, he quickly says, “Or don’t, whatever,” way too quickly, before she can even consider it.

Hahaha. His crinkle-face at his own stupidity is priceless. She ends up getting in the car anyway, and says her destination is the amusement park. He gets out with her, and muses that it’s a good thing he came along, since it’s a little weird to go to an amusement park alone.

But she’s not here to ride the rides. Ji-wook: “Then why are you here?” Yeon-jae: “To find someone. My first love.” LOL. How’s that for payback?

At the hospital, Eun-seok’s colleagues tease him about the tango, meanwhile secretly jealous that he seems to get attention from women despite being such a jerk. One of them points out that it can’t be helped—women like bad guys.

Eun-seok stalks off, not the least bit amused, but then Hee-joo appears like clockwork to prove the point further. She tells him about having given up her impractical dream of becoming a cartoonist, and then picking it back up once she found out that she had cancer.

She tells him that she started to draw him because he was so mean, and he guesses that she did it to try and stick it to him. She totally floors him by answering that it’s because she likes him. She doesn’t want to regret never trying or saying anything, so she asks him if he’ll take her out on one date.

He quickly answers no. Hee-joo pouts, having expected as much, “You’ve never had a one-sided love, so you’d never know.” Oh, if you only knew how his monstrous one-sided love could crush yours like a little bitty bug.

Yeon-jae looks for her first love who works in the amusement park, while Ji-wook is totally put out by it, trailing her the entire time. He asks accusingly if she has a cheater’s disposition or something. He reminds her that she said she wanted to date him once before dying, then had to meet Junsu, and now it’s her first love?

She tells him that a first love is simply that: a first love, and says that there’s something she’s always meant to tell him. He gets increasingly petty and jealous (hee) and asks what’s the deal with the doctor then – was she introducing him to her mother that night?

God, I love that he’s finally stewing in some jealousy. She laughs at him and explains Mom’s blind date and the double date to provide the social buffer. Dissatisfied, he murmurs, “Still, couldn’t you… not look for your first love?” Hahaha.

They walk into the zoo and find the fabled first love, holding a baby lion of all things. Awwww. They both light up to see each other, as Ji-wook looks back and forth between them warily. Can we just have this go on forever? Like he accompanies her to find all her ex-boyfriends and say the things she meant to say?

He can’t take not knowing what they’re talking about, so he moves closer to eavesdrop on their conversation. She tells First Love that she always liked him, and she never showed up that night because her father was really sick, not because she didn’t like him.

First Love’s response? “Uh… actually I liked Hae-won.” HA. Ji-wook goes from scowling to snickering at his words. He’s suddenly all lightness and joy, thinking the weather’s lovely, and the sun is shining, as he convinces her to go on some rides with him.

She tells him that she’s scared of heights, so he whines that they’ll just ride the not-scary ones. They end up on the carousel, which he rides like it’s Space Mountain or something, as she looks over at him thinking he’s off his rocker.

She finally gets into it when they ride the bumper cars, and they have a good time crashing into each other, much like their very dysfunctional relationship.

But then they run into Hae-won who’s there with her sister and her nieces, and she happens to see them when Ji-wook is brushing the hair of Yeon-jae’s face, making them look unequivocally like lovers on a secret date.

The thing is, I don’t understand her reaction, dripping of judgment, when she was the one who told her to seduce him in the first place. I suppose it has to do with his engagement announcement since then, but still, it’s not like he’s married, and she’s your best friend, for crying out loud.

Suffice it to say, the run-in kills the mood, and Ji-wook drops her off at home, both of them in subdued spirits.

Meanwhile, Eun-seok eats a lonely dinner, and when he sees that Malbok-ie has gathered a fresh pile of books to snack on, he brings him a chew toy instead. He picks up one of the books, and the title reads: “Twenty thing you’ll regret when you die.”

Hahaha. Is the dog a psychic dog? How awesome would it be if lonely Eun-seok had a dog that spoke to him through book titles? Like a magic eight ball that gives advice, but a cuddly BFF too.

He ends up in front of Yeon-jae’s house, false-starting a few text messages. But then before he can decide which one to send her, Ji-wook’s car pulls up and he sees them get out together. Aw. Poor Poopy-seok.

Yeon-jae comes home to find Mom half a bottle of soju deep, feeling down about being single at her age and looking like a fool on her date. Aw.

Across town, Sae-kyung’s busy getting wasted too, and she calls Ji-wook, who shows up to get her. He asks why she’s drinking so much, thinking she can’t possibly be upset about him wanting to end things.

She tells him that the truth is that he’s not guarding her pride—he’s scared of what her father will do if he breaks the engagement first. She tells him that they’ll get engaged and married as planned, since she has no intention of breaking things off, and he doesn’t have the courage to.

You know, as much as I hate her, she’s not a total idiot. He does seem like a passive patsy, in pretty much all things. She’s not wrong in thinking that this will be really hard for him to do, but I want him to grow a pair and just do it already.

He drops her off at home, where the sleazy ex-boyfriend who’s blackmailing her is waiting for her. He just tells her that since Daddy isn’t taking his calls, he came to her, and tells her to deposit the money into his account.

Ji-wook asks who he is, and she turns away as a tear falls, “The man I loved with my whole life. The man who is now using that to extort money from me.” She then adds bitterly that he’s got the perfect out now – he can tell her father that he found out about her tainted past and can’t marry her, and this way he’ll be free of blame and any consequences.

Oh, no. Does that mean he’s NOT going to do it, just to be noble? Gah, if he sticks with this engagement out of pity for her, I’m gonna SCREAM. To make matters worse, his friend tells him that she’s also got a suicide attempt under her belt, just to make him feel extra guilty. I could not possibly hate this girl more.

Yeon-jae crosses another thing off her bucket list: Find First Love. Check. Too bad it ended with bursting your bubble about how he loved you back, which I think provides the take-away lesson here: leave your first love where it belongs… in the past.

She tries Hae-won over and over, but she won’t answer her calls. Yeon-jae finally gets her to meet for coffee, where she shows up still angry and stick-up-her-ass about what’s right and wrong. Gah, seriously, Bestie?

She talks to Yeon-jae like she’s some goldigging whore, scoffing that she didn’t know her friend had such a talent for seducing men. Blech, are you kidding me with his high and mighty bullshit? I’m quickly losing faith in this friendship.

She reminds her that Ji-wook is someone whose engagement is in days, publicly announced all over the place. But Yeon-jae just says that she likes him and wants to see him, whenever she can. She doesn’t expect any more than that.

Hae-won tells her to do as she likes, as long as she doesn’t come crying to her about it. She announces that their twenty-year friendship has now come to an end. Seriously, imma cut a bitch. What the hell is her problem?

Hae-won gets up to leave and that’s when Yeon-jae blurts out, “They say it’s cancer.”

Hae-won stops in her tracks. Dumbfounded, she turns back slowly, asking again in disbelief. Yeon-jae tells her that she has six months to live… “No, is it five months now? I want to fall in love… before I die…”

Ooof. To her credit, Hae-won crumbles with genuine heartbreak when she learns the truth. I still contend that you should be understanding and loving without the terminal illness, but whatever.

It’s Yeon-jae’s first confession about her cancer to someone in her life (Eun-seok doesn’t count ’cause technically he told her), and it’s crushing to watch her finally admit it to someone.

At the same time, Sae-kyung and family have gathered to finalize engagement plans with Ji-wook and his father, and when Ji-wook doesn’t show up for a good long while, she thinks it’s over and starts to explain to her father… just as Ji-wook walks in. Drats.

But to my surprise, he really does screw up the nerve to break the engagement, and to her father’s face no less. He doesn’t sell out Sae-kyung’s past to save his own hide though, and just says that he’s not good enough for her, and that she’ll find someone else who’s right for her.

His father predictably freaks out and smacks him, and rushes back in to try and do damage control in whatever way he can. Please dear Daddy, do not try and put that egg back together again. It took us this long to get it broken.

Back at the coffee shop, Hae-won holds onto Yeon-jae for dear life and cries her heart out. She finally tells her to go, and do whatever she wants. “No matter what you do, I’m on your side.” THANK YOU. Geez, I thought I was gonna have to revoke your BFF card.

Yeon-jae ends up outside Ji-wook’s house, wondering what to do. He calls her and she says she’s outside the house. He tells her he’ll be right there, and she clarifies, “No, not in front of my house…” Helloooo, nurse!

He double-times it home. They greet each other silently with charged looks, and then when they’re standing face to face, she asks, “Do you want to date?” Aw, it’s cute. Like she’s back in high school or something.

He grabs her in a hug, as a tear rolls down his cheek.

COMMENTS

Cute. Cute, cute. This drama has a knack for being infuriating, but then solving the source of my anger quickly so that I’m swept along in the ups and downs, but not left stewing over any one thing too long.

It’s a nice balance because with the cancer premise, it could’ve ended up in full-on melodrama territory, with wailing and gnashing of teeth, but the story manages to move along quite nicely without too many Big Misunderstandings, at least not ones that last for more than an episode or two.

I love both boys’ fits of jealousy and each of their growing pains in learning how to express their love (they’re really equally stunted in this respect). And because this story isn’t necessarily about who gets to be with her forever and ever since there IS no forever and ever, I’m looking forward to watching how loving her changes them both for the better.

I like that expecting her to die changes our perspective on the happily-ever-after issue too. Because why are we always so fixated on love having to last forever and a day? Her impending death actually frees her from looking beyond what she wants in the moment, which is beautiful and enviable.

This is one of the reasons why Eun-seok’s love for Yeon-jae is just as interesting a story, and not just pathetic, in light of how it all ends (according to expectation, anyway). His love might be unrequited, but he loves her all the same, and that’s going to change him as much as it changes Ji-wook.

I hope that Yeon-jae gets to spend a good amount of time dating Ji-wook happily before he finds out about her illness. I want to see her fulfill her bucket list with the man she loves, and not in some lame montage either. I want to see her live her last five months as if they were her last fifty years, dancing the whole way.

I haven't watched to this episode but I couldn't resist watching the tango scene after seeing all the raves about it.

Even understanding nothing of the build up, it was really nice. As in hot :-)

Why aren't all Asian men as sexy as Korean men? Is the typical Korean man so sexy as all these actors on screen?

It must be something about the kimchi!

Sorry, I know Suna is a great actress and all... slim and pretty... but I keep seeing her face as being older than Dong. She looks like his older sister or something. Distracting.

She's seven years older than he is. And she's always had somewhat of an ajumma face. But I like their dynamic. I don't feel any mismatch in age. I totally would believe their being of same age.

Totally agree with you. They do look great during their scenes together. That tango scene will certainly win them the Best Couple Award at the end of the year. What an intense scene! He just grapped her and ....... the movements are so graceful, though forceful. He literally swept her off her feet.

All I have to say is wowwww, the writers really show that passion doesn't have to include sex and that is really refreshing. The tango scene is pretty much what I imagined would come (didn't know it'd come so soon!) and it was exactly how I imagined it would me. Sexy manhandling! I think I've watched it more than 10 times, it's so good. I'm glad they haven't said i love you yet or kissed for that matter because I love to be kept hanging for more. Looking at how the tango scene was written, I'm sure the kiss scene will be hot. Can't wait. I'm really on the Ji Wook - Yeon Jae bandwagon rather than Eun-Seok. I am guessing he'll either be with the younger cancer patient or the evil girl (and cure her of her bitchiness). Can't wait for next week! Love love love it! And still loving jealous Ji Wook!

Some people might not understand her BFF reaction when she saw them together at the amusement park and later at the cafe. But I get it. When you know someone for that long and love them like family, you have a belief in them. Seeing her friend with someone else's fiance is heartbreaking. Yes, she was harsh but it was harshness out of a broken heart.

Now I believe Yeon Jae should break the news to Ji Wook (and her mom). It wouldn't be fair to start a relationship, have him fall in love with her, and then say I got less than 6 months to live unless my test medication is a success! How f'd up would that be? Or if she doesn't, his dad finds out, breaks the new to him first/ or threatens too.... How horrible.

I wonder if there will be an increase in tango dance lessons after this episode ;)

You know, I wasn't drawn to the story at first. I mean, cancer=funny? Right. Tried my darnest to avoid it but LDW was way too ... hot. And the tango scene about nailed me to the screen.

Damn it, must she die? Why can't we have a happy ending with two of the hottest kdrama couples to ever cross the screen? Whyyyyyyy?

The sexual tension was off the charts.

Um, and I know they're both professionals and all, but how do KSA and KDW, as actors, not get hot and bothered themselves?!

It blows my mind that our intrusion into the searing intensity of that spine-tingling, toe-curling private foreplay is ACTING.

Constant rehearsal and having to wait while the camera sets up for another angle probably kills of any 'botheration' that they may feel :)

try finding the bed scene from City Hal on Youtube: they go from taking instructions from the director to rumpy pumpy in the snap of a finger. It's kinda odd.

I think that is why this scene is so amazing.
The two actors maintain their intensity despite the number of takes they HAD to have done to get all the angles.

There are so many cuts in this dance. They could have re-used a close-up from a high def long shot, but for the most part it looks like they shot and re-shot.

The choreographer, lighting folk, sound folk, the writer, the actors, of course, but mostly the editor should get the award for making this scene work. While there were a couple continuity issues with his (very large) hands on her back, overall it was close to PERFECT.

The use of slow-mo for KSA's reaction shots with her leg up (gulp) on LDW's hip (unf) made me feel like LDW had his hand on my thigh.

It's hard to be on the losing side when sad things happend to him. Its harder when the winning side dances Tango like that with the girl. You think "Yeah, there is no chance" Damn! At first, they were a little little stiff, doing the steps good but a little frightened. But that only lasted three seconds. Im a little ignorant in tango, but I know that this sensuality is part of it. I was holding my breath (and no sound again! Thats why Im more impressed!)
Its episode 8, the next episodes will be romance all around, cuteness overflowing (and those two can pull that off really well) and and the last will be save for her death, because Im pretty sure that Ji-wook will be the last to know.
Aw, every grumpy in this world need a dog.
I, too, want to see how Eun-seok changes after his experience with Yeon-jae. It is predictible, he will be nice with the patients or he will be serious but less cold and more comprehensive. Anyway, I want to see that, I want to see the change, the gratitud and then the moving on. He walking happily with a smile on his face and his dog (or two!) on the side. Maybe a girl too.
For Ji-wook too, minus the dog.

Ok, he can have a dog too.

Thank you for the reap!

P.D. I love Lee Dong-wook's lips (so delicious!) but I have the feeling that he knows they are juicy and he makes a tiny pout so they can look more...out, plus the gloss. Does anybody have noted that?

For all your shipping, I still think the doc is a jerk, for treating his patients that way. "It is an effort to hide his vulnerability" doesn't cut it, as there must be some compassion in a doctor who treats terminal patients. The lack of it is a serious breach of professional ethic and a significant deficiency in the person. OK, so he'll grow thru loving her, but meanwhile, he is a jerk!

I wasn't expecting the show to make both Ji wook and Eun seok have Jerk moments... It's true though, he could not get away with that terrible bedside manner. The show still hasn't shown us why Eun seok is like that.

Yea, it's obvious that DB is basically the HQ of the "poopy doctor". I am pretty much in agreement with your assessment of the doc. They're both jerks in their own way. The doc just gets more sympathy points because girls are weak for men with unrequited love and he has the dog.

that tango scene is probably the most sexually charged scene I've ever seen in a K drama.

Even though there was a lotta undressing and making out w/ tongue in *I Need Romance*, this tango scene in this episode really demonstrates that you don't need skin or attempts at vulgarity to get the audience plenty hot and bothered.

This drama has become my all-time favorite (and there are a lot to choose from). Not only is the chemistry between the two main leads off the charts, but the acting by KSA is superb.

I've always liked KSA ... she's cute and funny and bubbly. But it's only in this drama that I'm seeing her incredible range. I can feel her pain and her sadness and her fear and her loneliness ... just through her eyes alone. She embodies this character to the core... and i love her for that.

LDW is just yummy to look at - enough said.

What I love most about this drama is the inspiration I get from the story. As many have stated, it's definitely not an original premise. But the execution - acting, cinematography, writing - is so beautifully done that I can't help but reflect on my own life ... on the fleeting nature of life ... on all the moments that could have happened, should have happened ... on the fact that "next time" may never happen. These are sobering thoughts but thoughts that are inspiring me to live even harder than I have before.

One week seems too far away...

KSA is really great in this role. I love that she takes time between her dramas, usually a couple of years. She also takes time between the movies that she does. I image during that time she must just be living a regular life and I think that really helps her put such true emotion into each of her roles.

From what I've read acting is a really an emotional and complicated thing to undertake– it can mess with your identity when you're immersed in being someone else for months on end. I really think the time she takes between each project helps her be able to choose really good projects and have the energy to really put her all into every role. I'm always amazed at the actors out there who have their next role lined up before their current drama is even finished. When do you just live as themselves?! :)

I don`t think YJ is being selfish and she is not keeping her illness to JW, she did not mention about the cancer directly to him, but in Ep. 3 she told him about her planned on dating him before she die, but the word die, did not sink in to JW`s mind. if he asked about it, YJ might tell him.
There`s a lot of ways that YJ tried to avoid seeing him after Okinawa, his the one stalking her. it`s not her fault that JW falls for her.
If I`m a dying person and I`m 34, never been kiss and touch, who woudn`t get her chance with a Prince like JW. It`s wrong if YJ is just using JW to fulfill her bucket list, but she love him. It would be painful in the end but, spending your remaining time to someone U love and making him happy is what more important.
The thing is, in this drama I/we saw a wedding (photo) and I was thinking that, JW will ask Yj to marry him when he learn about YJ illness and we can see them living as husband and wife, more lovey-dovey scene as they go to their honeymoon....wishful thinking!!!!

SOAW...let go of my brain!!!!

I think JW will fulfill all her wishes before she dies, and if she really dies in his arm with the formal wedding dress on, gawd, I think I'm gonna bawl.... like.... NOOOOOOOO, I really don't want to see that happen.

KSA is a true thespian. She seems to always puts her all into each character that she plays. We see it in MNIKSS, we see it in City Hall and we certainly see it here in

KSA is a truely committed thespian. She always seems to put in her all in each character that she undertakes. So much so that we end up feeling for and with her characters. She did it with MNIKSS, she did it with City Hall and she's now doing it in SOAW...

Another thing I'm really impressed by her is her ability to not only bring out the best in her co-leads but also to create an incredibly sizzling chemistry with each one of them. It's like she can even create chemistry with a wall!!!

- dying lead wanting to live to the fullest before dying? check

- rich guy, poor girl falling in love against all odds? check

- engagement for convenience to a bitchy contravida? check

- Bong-Gil/Ramses character was copied from 'Shall we Dance?' (starring Richard Gere and J lo)

- tango? Scent of a Woman? -- Al Pacino territory

LOL

and yet... it works for me coz i love the acting in here... they can convince me to believe anything...

Can someone clarify... the scene where the Doc and HJ confront outdoors leading to a confession, um, why are there big clay pots outside a hospital? You know, those ones I usually see making soy sauce/bean paste/kim chi. Why... why are those outside a modern hospital?

Omo! Serious roller coaster ride!

In the beginning both guys were being such jerks that I was like "Yeon-Jae, go back to Okinawa and find you another man!"

Then there was a sexy tango and I was right back on board.

Then, Ji-Sook did what I've never seen done in a K-drama... break it off with his current love interest before pursuing his new love interest! I was like "Wow, how refreshing and honest of you...novel idea!"

Then the cute came back at the park.

Then Eun-sook ate his Lonely Little Dinner of Sadness and I tried to hug him through my screen.

Then, the scariest part of all. It looked like Ji-wook was going to contract a serious care of Noble Idioitis. I really thought he was going to go through with the engagement and we were going to have 2-3 weeks of him casting sad longing glances at Yeon-jea as Sea-Kyung clings to his arm. I don't have the stomach for that so we dodged a bullet there.

And I don't know what was up with the Hae-won confrontation. I guess they just needed a vehicle for Yeon-jae to finally confess to someone... but they could have done a much better job than to offer up a badly manufactured 5-minute conflict.

Anyway, I'm just glad we ended on a happy note. Off to count the days until next weekend!

And i think it was already established that while doctor poopy sook has attitude problems, he is a very credible doctor.

Maybe all that practicing alone to Scent of a Woman (with Al Pacino) paid off and earned him the most improved dancer trophy.

Also, I think his dancing with Yeon-Jae is metaphor for their relationship. When he is partnered with her he does things he could not do before a) dance b) stand up for himself against his father.

I still contend that you should be understanding and loving without the terminal illness, but whatever.

THANK YOU! I was so stinking annoyed by Hae Won this ep. I have to agree with Eun Suk how are you going to push the soapbox away now that she's dying? People don't get to bs just cause they are dying. Why the heck are you supporting her now? Oh cause she got the big C? WHATEVER!
Hae Won wouldn't even listen to her or find out what was really going on then had the NERVE to say she was a gold-digging trallop? THE HECK! What kinda po' a@$ friend are you man?! There's no way I would've thrown the cancer card(if I were Yeon Jae). After 20 years, I would've seen what kind of friend I had. We would never meet again. Kick rocks and I'll die! HO! UH! FURIOUS!

I will say that the scene after broke me (if she hadn't just shown her tail), her tears and pain made perfect sense.

My favorite part of this episode
The tear that fell down Ji Wook's cheek at the end. A commenter wrote that she didn't understand the tear. I totally get it, but I don't think I have the prowess to articulate the complexity of the feelings that begot that tear. But it was perfect. Better than a kiss. In fact, before that last shot, I was really peeved that all he was doing was pulling her in for a tight embrace. Then, I saw the tear, and ah! So much more beautiful, so much more expressed in that lone tear that could have been conveyed by any kiss.

My second favorite part of this episode
Ji Wook's scrunched up face that GF mentions above. Loved it!

I liked Lee Dong Wook in My Girl. Quite a lot. But he's really taking it up many, many notches with his portrayal of Ji Wook.

Even Kim Sun Ah whom I actually actively dislike and barely tolerate - I can buy her YJ and feel for her.

The bestfriend, I love. For being angry at YJ. A bit harsh, but that's what bestfriends are for. To not let you get away with bullshit. I really like the work that the actress is doing. Made me want her as my best friend.

I think the last part would make since is if he found out that she has cancer and he rushed off to her as soon as he found out and that is why he was crying while he was holding her. I don't see why else he would be crying. Oh, and the tango scene actually made my heart pound. The steps were simple and there wasn't any kissing, but their chemistry made it feel like " wow… that is what a tango should be". Best episode by far!

I went and rewatch her tango scene with Cha Seung Won, in "City Hall" just for a comparison. I even threw in her one dance with Poopsy-Seok.

And, the best dance scene is the one of her and Wookie in this episode. It was better directed, camera angles and lighting perfect to create an unmistakeably sultry atmosphere.

I hope she will still perform at the hospital event because it will be interesting to see what type of atmosphere is created in that scene.

Thanks for the recap.

re Hae-won: I think the problem was not so much Hae-won condemming of Yj's actions, but the way this was executed by the show.

Until now none of the characters have been acting out of character - Jw is emotionally stunted, ditto Poopy doc, ditto... - come to think of it, everyone is emotionally stunted.

Except the dog.

Dog is just protesting the fact that he's locked up WITHOUT WALKIES all day.

Hae-won however seems to be a good, level-headed friend: she worries about Yj, lends her money, talks to her about stuff that seems to be bothering her - and then she suddenly goes all schizoid by:
-giving Yj the cold shoulder at the park
-jumping to conclusions
- not answering the phone (this bugs me sooooooo much when a supposed adult does this)
- judging her friend of 20 years without hearing her side of the story

That is just sloppy writing.

(Then again, she might just have been left by that lion tamer and has since had an unreasonable hatred of apparent fiancée-stealers that makes her act out of character).

Poopy Doc should hook up with the Tango teacher (Veronica, not Ramses. That would be a whole other show). I reckon she would know how to push his buttons and tap into all that pent up frustration he carries around....

Agreed. I understand why Hea-won is upset but the way they portrayed it is so jarring because that's so not the way they built the friendship up. After her being so supportive the whole time, to have her bust in there with "you sure did a good job of seducing that rich taken man" is so incongruous. I originally thought she was just angry at being left out of the loop until she started talking and then I was like "huh?" It was a scene that was obviously written just so that Yeon-jae could have her been Cancer Reveal, but like you said, it was sloppily done.

I think the scene would have been just as powerful, if not more-so, if Hae-won had come to her with concern, instead of anger, before the reveal.

Required fields are marked *

I vote Poopy seok and Veronica!

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

I totally get Hea-won's reaction.

1) As far as she knows her best friend lied to her. She asked Yeon-Jae repeated if anything happened between her and Ji-Wook in Japan and she was told nothing happened
Yet--a) Ji-Wook who doesn't seem to care much about anything goes out of his way to help Yeon-Jae with the lawsuit.
b) There he is the amusement park with Yeon-Jae giving the impression that they have an intimate relationship.

2) Im Sae-Kyun just got through trying to crush Yeon-Jae over something that wasn't even personal. Sae-Kyun put Yeon-Jae in such dire straits that she was left with $2 to her name. Hae-won might be more than a little concern about what Sae-Kyun would do to Yeon-Jae when she kinds out she is fooling around with her boyfriend.

3) Both women seem like the type whose sense of fairness and integrity would make other people's boyfriends be off limits so of course she's disappointed in her friend.

4) She was all for Yeon-Jae going after Hae-won until his impending engagement was announced. Now seducing him seems like a stupid thing to do.

Like Hae-won I might think going down that road was stupid and self-destructive, but I think/hope I'd give my friend a chance to explain her position.

0

Required fields are marked *

Very good points yumi, I hadn't really considered point no. 1 - perhaps if I were to watch the episodes again in one sitting.

As you said though, I expected Hae-won to be the kind of friend who would give Yj a chance to explain her position - although Yeon-jae has been deliberately ambiguous at times, and is definitely acting out of character.

I don't feel let down by Hae-won as a character, but rather just think it's an inconsistency in what so far has been very consistent characterisation.

0
reply

Required fields are marked *

Actually, I believe Yeon Jae told Hae Won he was engaged, and she responded with, "He sin't married yet." And she didn't show concern, she showed contempt. Also, the other person in the "other people's boyfriends" is a person who humiliated Yeon Jae, flaunted her privilege in her face, and tried to strip her of any dignity, so I don't think she feels any loyalty or sense of duty or respect towards Sae Kyung, nor should she.

But I can understand the whole best friend lying thing. It would be upsetting to think your closest friend is lying to you about a romantic relationship, but ending a 20 year friendship, the kind of friendship where one feels comfortable asking for $1000 and the other feels comfortable giving it, is a bit much. I guess the original poster (Josina) summed t up pretty well.

I am really really really really afraid of that kiss and how real life will disappoint me because of it.

Kiss(LDW + KSA) = romanticocrine overload.

I will be watching eyes covered through my open fingers.

The PD's recognize that KSA's ability to bare herself with her leading men. Unlike (some) other female firsts, she shows she is susceptible to a man's attraction. You can read the hunger in her eyes, her neck, her mouth. It's not the stupid blank eyes wide open crap we usually see.
And, as my friend leonardswench has pointed out, LDW is sex on legs.

I am so happy this drama is doing well. Of course, I never expected anything less from the incomparable Kim Sun Ah, she has already established herself as an amazing and CREDIBLE actress, countless times. I am so glad Lee Dong Wook got this opportunity to work with her, fresh out of the army, no less.

I am particularly proud of Lee Dong Wook, though. I started following his career since Hanoi Bride and I gotta say, he's gone a long, long way since then. I always knew he had the potential to be a good actor. Sure he may not be of Uhm Tae Woong's or Kim Myung Min's level (at least not yet), but I can really see his sincerity and perseverance in improving his craft. Of course, I am ecstatic that more and more people are appreciating him, acting-wise and looks-wise, too :D

Going back to SOAW... that hot tango sequence is indelibly stuck in my mind now. I wonder how the PD plans on topping that scene... :D

I`m a fan of her, so just let me point out this and no offense also.
It would be a different story if SHK will be the actress. This drama will not be as good as it is now, cause I cannot see any other actress who can portray YJ, but Suna, the character was tailored to her, according to the scriptwriter (Got info from somewhere, if I`m not mistaken Hancinema) meaning she fits the role.
The production of this drama, script writer and the director are not stupid to get an actress who would look like a mother of LDW and according to fans who have seen KSA in person, Suna look much younger in person and more beautiful. I admit that she look her age now, that is because she lose a lot a weight and the she did it for this drama, she should look ill and she usually wear light make-up. I hope you can see how this " Old looking actress" that you were referring can sacrifice her beauty to become more effective and believable to her role in this drama.

cheers...I hope you still watch SOAW!

I second every thing you said jastinel. I dont think song hye kyo can carry kim yoon jae. Kim sun ah has all the necessary qualities to make kim yoon jae real to us. Sun ah brings in acting chops and sexiness. Song hye kyo can cry but i cant see her in that sizzling tango with lee dong wook. I saw a bit of hye kyo in worlds within with hyun bin and even with binnie, she cant bring the audience to near organsm the way kim sun ah and lee ding wook did in that tango and near kiss. ( i borrowed the description from one commenter).

One more thing, kim sun ah truly try to know each of her characters that she brings in something different each time. As kim yoon jae, she is almost breathlessly in love (or lust, whatever)... You can feel hormones sizzle from your screen that she cant hardly breath. And when she does take in air, its has to be deep cause who knows when she will breath again. Gosh, watching that tango feels like watching a sinful triple x movie. As shin mi rae, she quivers. She
shivers at cha seung won's very touch, heck she shakes under his gaze. One slight touch of his pinkie finger and she was shaking and baking like that chicken she delivers. As kim sam soon, she was more playful with hyun bin.

I just love her. Im so glad she didnt continue with i am legend. Who needs that drama when kim sun ah is by herself already a legend.

No offense taken. I don't think she's too old. This is a drama about adults and adults look like they've lived life.

Kim Sun ah has done such a fantastic job playing this character, I couldn't imagine anyone else playing Yeon jae regardless of age. Certainly not Song hye kyo! She's very likeable and beautiful, but she doesn't have the acting chops yet to handle this character or the level of acting from this ensemble of actors.

haha..okay, i know you guys love her so much, thank you guys for replying on my comment... actually i'm not SHG fan too *i'm HaJiWon and Han Hyo Joo's fan*, i just thought she was good in Endless Love, maybe she would be nice on this drama too,but idk
yeah, that's true, this is an adult drama but *sigh* okay, it's all about taste, i can't judge or blame anyone, maybe becuz i don't really like her *except in MNIKSS* and i watched some of her dramas and i found out that she took the same character almost in every drama of her *started with a bad appearance but ended it with a good performance and appearance*, so then..i prefer to not watching... but i really do like the lead actor...maybe i should try to watch it..and find out why you guys love her so much..XD

ps : i know she's a good actress, but maybe i need her in another character...XD

Thank you for the recap, GF! Best line of the day: "Good grief, so this is why they invented tango. I’m pretty sure she’s gonna drop a baby, any minute now." Made me laugh out loud.

And what can I say but that HOT tango scene was charged with so much sexual tension. Totally totally loved how JW walked towards YJ and pulled her towards him. That almost kiss and the admission of not being able to pull away? WOW.

Really hope YJ finally tells JW in the next 2 episodes about her illness. Don't think it's selfish of her yet... since they've only made the decision to 'date' and she doesn't know how much he likes her... but she does need to tell him soonish.

Love love all LDW's cute expressions in this episode!
