Scent of a Woman: Episode 8

I think before this episode, the tango was a stand-in, a euphemism for a lot of things, but there are no longer any spaces to read between the lines now. I think the appropriate expression is: Oh, get a room already. YOWZA.

EPISODE 8 RECAP

Yeon-jae confesses to Eun-seok that despite trying not to, she likes Ji-wook. Eun-seok sighs, masking his own heartbreak, and tells her that she should be saying this to Ji-wook, not him.

Ji-wook, who’s been eavesdropping this whole time, gets caught up in her confession and starts to take a step towards her… but then Yeon-jae replies: “It doesn’t mean anything. He’s marrying someone else.” That stops him in his tracks, and he watches Eun-seok turn to see him, and then take her away.

Meanwhile Mom’s date is going swimmingly, as they sit down to dinner. Mom puts a piece of live wriggling octopus in her mouth and it gets stuck in her throat (Ew, worst nightmare).

The doctor has to give her the Heimlich so she’ll spit it back out, which sends her packing immediately. This is why I don’t eat things that are still alive. Recently alive is good enough for me.

Yeon-jae promises to return the favor if Mom’s date went well, and Eun-seok starts to ask about Ji-wook. She clarifies that he wasn’t the one to sue her or give her the money, and he wonders if maybe he didn’t butt in where he shouldn’t have. Aw.

Yeon-jae sits in the dark for a while to brood, and Mom comes home, burying herself in bed out of mortification. Meanwhile Ji-wook tosses and turns all night, unable to sleep after hearing Yeon-jae’s confession to Eun-seok.

He heads to work the next day and after another round of uninspired ideas, decides that Yeon-jae’s last unfinished project with the planning team is the best they can come up with. He also announces (out of nowhere) that Yeon-jae wasn’t responsible for Wilson’s ring because it was never lost. Uh, did anyone ask?

He has his secretary call Yeon-jae in to see him, though he adds not to tell her that he asked her to come. So… someone else called her to your office? You’re dumber than I thought.

He fidgets nervously like a big dork as he waits for her to arrive. She remains aloof as she sits down to ask what he wants, and he explains that they’re seeing her project through, and asks her to come back to work.

She turns him down, and he reminds her that she said it was a job that she wanted to protect for a long, long time. Without explaining further, she tells him that even if she were to return, she wouldn’t be able to do that.

He’s clearly not getting the answer he wants, so he starts yelling at her to just listen to him. Oh, okay. Pffft. He even tries apologizing for the other night.

She turns him down flat and gets up to go, so he finally yells, “You said you wanted to see me! So I’m giving you that chance!” Aaaaaargh, what the hell is with you and your asshat remarks? I’m getting tired of it.

Shaking, she asks if he heard what she said. He confesses that he heard everything. They share a charged silent moment, which gets interrupted by Dad’s untimely entrance. He interrupts them to ask Ji-wook about when he’s going shopping for engagement rings, which is pretty much the worst possible thing he could say.

Yeon-jae excuses herself and walks out, and Ji-wook runs after her, but can’t catch up to her in time.

After having being so totally crushed, Eun-seok goes back to his grumpypants ways to cover up his big bleeding heart. He finds the other doctors and nurses laughing at the latest webtoon starring him, and they tease that he must have some hidden manly charm.

They show him the cartoon, and it features him dancing the tango with Yeon-jae. He storms into the room to yell at Yeon-jae’s bunkmate Hee-joo (the one with the crush on him), and totally takes all his anger and frustration out on her, demanding her to take them all down at once. Aw, you big meanie.

Yeon-jae walks up to hear the tail end of his yelling, and when they talk he’s still in a sour mood. She asks if he knows what happened on Mom’s date because she won’t talk about it, and he coldly tells her that she choked on some live octopus, and wonders if it was necessary to come all this way to ask him that.

She gives him some doggie treats for Malbok-ie, saying that she realized she hadn’t paid him enough attention since leaving him in Eun-seok’s care. He softens a little at that, but then she tells him that he was too harsh with Hee-joo, who’s young and sick with cancer.

Back on the defensive, he asks if being a cancer patient excuses you to do anything you want. He snaps at her to stop concerning herself with him and figure out her own mess — liking a man who’s going to marry someone else. Ouch.

Angry tears brimming, she says, “I must look pathetic in your eyes.” He doesn’t relent: “Well aren’t you?” and walks away. Aaaaaargh.

He stops to look back at her, probably realizing that he’s lashing out, but turns and keeps walking ahead with a sigh. Oh, Poopy-seok. You have the emotional maturity of a nine-year old.

Yeon-jae heads to the tango studio to clear up her crappy mood, and asks her instructor Veronica how long it’ll take her to dance like her. She sighs to hear the answer six years, but Veronica adds that it can be shortened if she dedicates the time to it.

At the same time, Ji-wook arrives outside the jewelry shop. He looks inside and sees Sae-kyung sitting there, and as his hand comes up to open the door… he stops. He can’t face it, or her, and whirls around and leaves.

He calls Yeon-jae, who doesn’t hear her phone because she’s dancing. Veronica answers for her, and doesn’t let him talk to her, but now he knows where she is. He spins the car around and zooms to the studio.

Veronica slyly leaves Yeon-jae alone while she and her partner go out for dinner, so when Ji-wook arrives, he sees her dancing all alone.

He walks up to her, intense with focus, tearing off his jacket and rolling up his sleeves in one fluid movement. Without a word, he puts his arm around her waist and pulls her toward him. Rawr.

She takes a step back, so he moves forward, in that same step they learned in the beginning, now fraught with all their unfulfilled longing. He takes the lead, maybe for the first time ever, and they dance.

Good grief, so this is why they invented tango. I’m pretty sure she’s gonna drop a baby, any minute now. Seriously, all that denial of feelings now seems worth it, for the tango foreplay alone. Hot damn.

They finally get to kissing distance, and he starts to lean in. He closes his eyes. She closes hers. He inches forward and they stay frozen like that.

He stops, noses touching, lips just barely apart. Trembling, he says, “How are you going to stop your feelings, when you’re like this?” It’s unclear whether he’s saying it to her or himself, maybe both.

And then he walks out, leaving her with her arms held out in the space where he used to be. Gah, it’s so much worse than if he’d never shown up.

He goes straight to Sae-kyung’s place to wait for her outside, and she screams at the top of her lungs, insane with rage at having been made to wait around for him. He tells her to break the engagement, and the wedding too of course.

That catches her off-guard and she counters that she has no intention of doing that, since it doesn’t matter which guy she marries; it’s all the same to her. Wow, that’s a sad statement on your life, princess.

But he tells her that he’s trying to be nice – if he breaks the engagement it’ll wound her pride, so he’s offering her the chance to break it herself. How come you can manage to be a gentleman to the girl you hate, but you can’t ever manage to be more than a total ass to the woman you love?

Anyway, she threatens him with the only real thing she has in her arsenal—money. She tells him that when Daddy hears about this, he could crush Ji-wook’s company and take everything away. He doesn’t even flinch: “I don’t care. Do as you like.” Ha. I suppose his indifference comes in handy at a time like this?

Ji-wook broods and then gets all hot ‘n’ bothered thinking about their tango. Yeah, you’re not the only one, buddy. Yeon-jae takes out her bucket list, sighing as she looks at the last two on her list, to do all this with the person she loves, and to close her eyes in the arms of the one she loves.

She heads out in the morning, shocked to find Ji-wook parked out in front of her house, sleeping. Ha, did you spend the night there?

He doesn’t deny that he’s here to see her (Perhaps asking Sae-kyung for the breakup has FINALLY launched him firmly out of Denial Land?) and gives her Wilson’s ring as his excuse for stopping by. He conveys Wilson’s message that it’s a lucky ring, but it’s stopped bringing him luck, so he’s passing it on to her. How lucky are we talking here? Like beat-cancer lucky?

He offers to drop her off wherever she’s going, with the lame excuse that he’s headed out of her neighborhood anyway, and then to cover up his own awkwardness, he quickly says, “Or don’t, whatever,” way too quickly, before she can even consider it.

Hahaha. His crinkle-face at his own stupidity is priceless. She ends up getting in the car anyway, and says her destination is the amusement park. He gets out with her, and muses that it’s a good thing he came along, since it’s a little weird to go to an amusement park alone.

But she’s not here to ride the rides. Ji-wook: “Then why are you here?” Yeon-jae: “To find someone. My first love.” LOL. How’s that for payback?

At the hospital, Eun-seok’s colleagues tease him about the tango, meanwhile secretly jealous that he seems to get attention from women despite being such a jerk. One of them points out that it can’t be helped—women like bad guys.

Eun-seok stalks off, not the least bit amused, but then Hee-joo appears like clockwork to prove the point further. She tells him about having given up her impractical dream of becoming a cartoonist, and then picking it back up once she found out that she had cancer.

She tells him that she started to draw him because he was so mean, and he guesses that she did it to try and stick it to him. She totally floors him by answering that it’s because she likes him. She doesn’t want to regret never trying or saying anything, so she asks him if he’ll take her out on one date.

He quickly answers no. Hee-joo pouts, having expected as much, “You’ve never had a one-sided love, so you’d never know.” Oh, if you only knew how his monstrous one-sided love could crush yours like a little bitty bug.

Yeon-jae looks for her first love who works in the amusement park, while Ji-wook is totally put out by it, trailing her the entire time. He asks accusingly if she has a cheater’s disposition or something. He reminds her that she said she wanted to date him once before dying, then had to meet Junsu, and now it’s her first love?

She tells him that a first love is simply that: a first love, and says that there’s something she’s always meant to tell him. He gets increasingly petty and jealous (hee) and asks what’s the deal with the doctor then – was she introducing him to her mother that night?

God, I love that he’s finally stewing in some jealousy. She laughs at him and explains Mom’s blind date and the double date to provide the social buffer. Dissatisfied, he murmurs, “Still, couldn’t you… not look for your first love?” Hahaha.

They walk into the zoo and find the fabled first love, holding a baby lion of all things. Awwww. They both light up to see each other, as Ji-wook looks back and forth between them warily. Can we just have this go on forever? Like he accompanies her to find all her ex-boyfriends and say the things she meant to say?

He can’t take not knowing what they’re talking about, so he moves closer to eavesdrop on their conversation. She tells First Love that she always liked him, and she never showed up that night because her father was really sick, not because she didn’t like him.

First Love’s response? “Uh… actually I liked Hae-won.” HA. Ji-wook goes from scowling to snickering at his words. He’s suddenly all lightness and joy, thinking the weather’s lovely, and the sun is shining, as he convinces her to go on some rides with him.

She tells him that she’s scared of heights, so he whines that they’ll just ride the not-scary ones. They end up on the carousel, which he rides like it’s Space Mountain or something, as she looks over at him thinking he’s off his rocker.

She finally gets into it when they ride the bumper cars, and they have a good time crashing into each other, much like their very dysfunctional relationship.

But then they run into Hae-won who’s there with her sister and her nieces, and she happens to see them when Ji-wook is brushing the hair of Yeon-jae’s face, making them look unequivocally like lovers on a secret date.

The thing is, I don’t understand her reaction, dripping of judgment, when she was the one who told her to seduce him in the first place. I suppose it has to do with his engagement announcement since then, but still, it’s not like he’s married, and she’s your best friend, for crying out loud.

Suffice it to say, the run-in kills the mood, and Ji-wook drops her off at home, both of them in subdued spirits.

Meanwhile, Eun-seok eats a lonely dinner, and when he sees that Malbok-ie has gathered a fresh pile of books to snack on, he brings him a chew toy instead. He picks up one of the books, and the title reads: “Twenty thing you’ll regret when you die.”

Hahaha. Is the dog a psychic dog? How awesome would it be if lonely Eun-seok had a dog that spoke to him through book titles? Like a magic eight ball that gives advice, but a cuddly BFF too.

He ends up in front of Yeon-jae’s house, false-starting a few text messages. But then before he can decide which one to send her, Ji-wook’s car pulls up and he sees them get out together. Aw. Poor Poopy-seok.

Yeon-jae comes home to find Mom half a bottle of soju deep, feeling down about being single at her age and looking like a fool on her date. Aw.

Across town, Sae-kyung’s busy getting wasted too, and she calls Ji-wook, who shows up to get her. He asks why she’s drinking so much, thinking she can’t possibly be upset about him wanting to end things.

She tells him that the truth is that he’s not guarding her pride—he’s scared of what her father will do if he breaks the engagement first. She tells him that they’ll get engaged and married as planned, since she has no intention of breaking things off, and he doesn’t have the courage to.

You know, as much as I hate her, she’s not a total idiot. He does seem like a passive patsy, in pretty much all things. She’s not wrong in thinking that this will be really hard for him to do, but I want him to grow a pair and just do it already.

He drops her off at home, where the sleazy ex-boyfriend who’s blackmailing her is waiting for her. He just tells her that since Daddy isn’t taking his calls, he came to her, and tells her to deposit the money into his account.

Ji-wook asks who he is, and she turns away as a tear falls, “The man I loved with my whole life. The man who is now using that to extort money from me.” She then adds bitterly that he’s got the perfect out now – he can tell her father that he found out about her tainted past and can’t marry her, and this way he’ll be free of blame and any consequences.

Oh, no. Does that mean he’s NOT going to do it, just to be noble? Gah, if he sticks with this engagement out of pity for her, I’m gonna SCREAM. To make matters worse, his friend tells him that she’s also got a suicide attempt under her belt, just to make him feel extra guilty. I could not possibly hate this girl more.

Yeon-jae crosses another thing off her bucket list: Find First Love. Check. Too bad it ended with bursting your bubble about how he loved you back, which I think provides the take-away lesson here: leave your first love where it belongs… in the past.

She tries Hae-won over and over, but she won’t answer her calls. Yeon-jae finally gets her to meet for coffee, where she shows up still angry and stick-up-her-ass about what’s right and wrong. Gah, seriously, Bestie?

She talks to Yeon-jae like she’s some goldigging whore, scoffing that she didn’t know her friend had such a talent for seducing men. Blech, are you kidding me with his high and mighty bullshit? I’m quickly losing faith in this friendship.

She reminds her that Ji-wook is someone whose engagement is in days, publicly announced all over the place. But Yeon-jae just says that she likes him and wants to see him, whenever she can. She doesn’t expect any more than that.

Hae-won tells her to do as she likes, as long as she doesn’t come crying to her about it. She announces that their twenty-year friendship has now come to an end. Seriously, imma cut a bitch. What the hell is her problem?

Hae-won gets up to leave and that’s when Yeon-jae blurts out, “They say it’s cancer.”

Hae-won stops in her tracks. Dumbfounded, she turns back slowly, asking again in disbelief. Yeon-jae tells her that she has six months to live… “No, is it five months now? I want to fall in love… before I die…”

Ooof. To her credit, Hae-won crumbles with genuine heartbreak when she learns the truth. I still contend that you should be understanding and loving without the terminal illness, but whatever.

It’s Yeon-jae’s first confession about her cancer to someone in her life (Eun-seok doesn’t count ’cause technically he told her), and it’s crushing to watch her finally admit it to someone.

At the same time, Sae-kyung and family have gathered to finalize engagement plans with Ji-wook and his father, and when Ji-wook doesn’t show up for a good long while, she thinks it’s over and starts to explain to her father… just as Ji-wook walks in. Drats.

But to my surprise, he really does screw up the nerve to break the engagement, and to her father’s face no less. He doesn’t sell out Sae-kyung’s past to save his own hide though, and just says that he’s not good enough for her, and that she’ll find someone else who’s right for her.

His father predictably freaks out and smacks him, and rushes back in to try and do damage control in whatever way he can. Please dear Daddy, do not try and put that egg back together again. It took us this long to get it broken.

Back at the coffee shop, Hae-won holds onto Yeon-jae for dear life and cries her heart out. She finally tells her to go, and do whatever she wants. “No matter what you do, I’m on your side.” THANK YOU. Geez, I thought I was gonna have to revoke your BFF card.

Yeon-jae ends up outside Ji-wook’s house, wondering what to do. He calls her and she says she’s outside the house. He tells her he’ll be right there, and she clarifies, “No, not in front of my house…” Helloooo, nurse!

He double-times it home. They greet each other silently with charged looks, and then when they’re standing face to face, she asks, “Do you want to date?” Aw, it’s cute. Like she’s back in high school or something.

He grabs her in a hug, as a tear rolls down his cheek.

COMMENTS

Cute. Cute, cute. This drama has a knack for being infuriating, but then solving the source of my anger quickly so that I’m swept along in the ups and downs, but not left stewing over any one thing too long.

It’s a nice balance because with the cancer premise, it could’ve ended up in full-on melodrama territory, with wailing and gnashing of teeth, but the story manages to move along quite nicely without too many Big Misunderstandings, at least not ones that last for more than an episode or two.

I love both boys’ fits of jealousy and each of their growing pains in learning how to express their love (they’re really equally stunted in this respect). And because this story isn’t necessarily about who gets to be with her forever and ever since there IS no forever and ever, I’m looking forward to watching how loving her changes them both for the better.

I like that expecting her to die changes our perspective on the happily-ever-after issue too. Because why are we always so fixated on love having to last forever and a day? Her impending death actually frees her from looking beyond what she wants in the moment, which is beautiful and enviable.

This is one of the reasons why Eun-seok’s love for Yeon-jae is just as interesting a story, and not just pathetic, in light of how it all ends (according to expectation, anyway). His love might be unrequited, but he loves her all the same, and that’s going to change him as much as it changes Ji-wook.

I hope that Yeon-jae gets to spend a good amount of time dating Ji-wook happily before he finds out about her illness. I want to see her fulfill her bucket list with the man she loves, and not in some lame montage either. I want to see her live her last five months as if they were her last fifty years, dancing the whole way.

Thank you for the recap. So funny.
My favorite line:
He interrupts them to ask Ji-wook about when he’s going shopping for engagement rings, which is pretty much the worst possible thing he could say.

That daddy isn't even a bad daddy. He really thinks his son is all for this marriage headed for hell.

I expect once we find out more about JW's mamma, JW daddy will become more sympathetic. When he finds out YJ's time on earth is limited, and there is a chance that JW will be able to marry a worth partner, some time later in the future when his broken heart heals.

whatis earlier pointed out that YJ hasn't gone through the usual stages of denial, acceptance, etc.
I don't think the writers are avoiding this reality for terminal patients. I think they will have YJ go through them with JW.

As far as the idea she is using JW, I think it ended up that way. She never expected to fall in love with the chaebol that she wanted to seduce, or that he would fall for her. He was just a really handsome face in the Okinawa crowd.

JW's reaction to the news of her illness will destroy us, and YJ won't realize what she has wrought until she tells him. It'll cause even more angst than we could possibly handle.
As much as I know my heart will be broken into sharp pointy shards that will cause my eyes and head to ache, while I sob somewhat silently into my keyboard, I can't WAIT!

This drama is so worth the week long wait! I love the crazy passionate aspects of the drama, though I do admit that there are some holes in the 'feelings' departments.

For example, why is ES so comfortable with being head over heels for YJ, when he actually does know she's going to die? It doesn't seem to affect him, which is odd, no? Definitely calls his feelings for her into question, which is good because at least one time, I think a second lead male should avoid heartbreak.

If SK can patch things over with her father regarding the engagement, I would officially come back from hate and enter the neutral zone with her character. I know we have to keep some of the drama going, but it would be great is JW and YJ could focus on getting in as much of the love and fun as possible, without getting too sidetracked.

I love the comments about JW turning into a Mr. Darcy, Korean-style. YJ is going to have to tell him about her cancer soon, but I wonder if the reason why we've seen so much of JW's turmoil in order for us to feel his heartbreak more keenly at YJ's (potential) withholding of her situation?

It's just so....A Walk to Remember.

And bringing it back to reality for just a moment, I just adore KSA. She literally sizzles with all of her co-stars, its just insane. This drama better win some awards, and kudos for the actors' hard work being recognized in the ratings. This is what actors should be like...not naming any names, but you all know who I'm talking about...

I share your feelings regarding KSA. She has this amazing ability to bring out the best in her co-leads - Gong Yoo, Hyun Bin, Lee Dong Gun, Cha Seung Won - all of them sizzle when they are paired with her. Heck! I think she can even create chemistry with a wall!!!

ya, that's exactly what i was thinking of earlier while watching this episode.

i'd love to have her win another acting award end of this year 'cos she's just so amazing !

she needs to put on some weight after the drama though, getting way too thin for my liking.

People why you want her to tell JW that she has cancer? It's still too early! When you start dating someone you don't go and tell him that you have xx problem or xxx disease. You usually see if your feelings are really mutual and strong and if he is the man you want to stay...

It's like ''let's date'' You ''I have cancer, you ok with it?''

*Guy runs off*

It's not like this... -__-

Also I think she just need to tell him when she confirms his feelings! She doesn't know about them yet. She doesn't know what he did for her. I know many are angry that she must tell him about her condition because you don't want him to screw his life without knowing the truth, but let's face it - who would believe - he would do this, this soon? Also she doesn't know what he did, she just think they will have a affair and nothing really serious will happen, and she never said ''break off the engagment'' or something like this. She just said she wanted to date someone like him one time before dying.

-Ps: What he did was what he wanted to do for a long time ago but didn't have the guts to, but because he finally found something that gives him a motivation he did it. I think even if he feel cheated by her or if she is selfish still he just get off a unhappy marriage life. He deserves better.

I... somewhat... agree with you. But I can't buy the 'she doesn't know how he feels' argument. Of course she know he like her, she even asked him directly earlier by the pool (although he stupidly insulted her for it). You don't have those sizzling moments between two people in a one-sided situation!

What I think she is confused about is the 'how much?' rather than the 'does he?' aspect... i.e. 'Am I a passing fancy prior to marriage?', which I think is her current mindset. So up to this point, I think keeping her cancer a secret is justifiable. (Still, she knows he is going to marry SK. She knows SK is a bitch. What she doesn't know is the extent of the affection/ relationship between SK and JW. In actuality, if we all didn't know that the cheabol's relationship was a farce, she was effectively stepping into the shameless mistress/ bit-on-the-side category.)

Anyway to come back to the point- I find that her not telling him about her illness, is comparably to, for example, starting a relationship and not telling the other person that you are married (Note Yeon-jae's reaction when she found out JW was marrying SK - betrayal - and they've only known each other for days). It is not only because you are starting the whole relationship on false pretences but also because you are omitting a fact that has such an all encompassing influence on the future of that relationship. So I'm calling for YJ to come clean in the next episode. As I've learnt in my kdrama watching life, it only gets harder the longer you draw it out.

KSA's tango. We have seen her in three. I feel such a traitor to cha seung won and the city hallers because i cant decide which one i like more.
i dont like the tango with rain because KSA looks uncomfortable and scared and that she just wants the whole routine to end.
The tango in city hall is a performance meant to be watched by an audience. While they were both lost in each other's eyes, they are aware there is an auditorium filled of people watching, including mama shin.
The tango in scent of a woman feels more like foreplay rather than a dance. Its not meant to be a dance performance for an audience but rather a dance for the lovers themselves. Watching it makes me feel im looking into private moments of the lovers ( but that feeling does not stop me from watching over and over again... How sinful!)

Gah - i cant choose.... But heck, i can just love them both.

I can't agree with people who dismiss Ji wook and Yeon jae's relationship as just lust as if to say how they feel about each other isn't sincere or isn't love/the blossoming of love. I think how the show has portrayed their initial curiosity and attraction to each other leading to them wanting to date is believable. It's not like they decided to get married in this episode. They've only admitted to liking each other and wanting to date. So many times in kdramas one of the OTP members falls in love at first site with the other without knowing anything about the other and we accept it without question.

So I don't think they feel lustful towards each other. Yes, they are very romantic and there's definitely sexual tension, but they are bonafide adults and that's part of what happens in a developing romantic relationship between adults.

They are simply a couple at the beginning of love.

LDW is *REALLY* good at taking his clothes off. I would kill for a gif montage of all the moments in this drama where he angrily takes off his clothes (+ maybe that moment when he puts that shirt on and you see his back muscles......).

Now, PD and writers, if we can just get the shirt off too...

He does seem noticeably calm in the BTS photos of those scenes.
Either he has a good sense of humor about the scenes, or the PD is doing a great job of keeping him at ease, or both.

I love him with all my heart, btw.

I can understand Hae-won's reaction to seeing the two together since the engagement is such a high-profile thing and if word gets out that Ji-wook is seeing someone else while all this is going on, there will be a lot of bad press for Yeon-jae. I'm happy that Yeon-jae confided in Hae-won about her cancer. I didn't want her to just try to wear a protective shield around her pretending that she's totally healthy around everyone.
I expect there's going to be a time when Yeon-jae's gonna start feeling the symptoms of her cancer or treatment. And I hope Ji-wook (and I'm definitely sure Eun-seok) will be there to help her fight her battle. I want Yeon-jae to be able to check off all her things on her bucket list while she's still got her health. All her to-do scenes are just so cute and satisfying in a way. I just hope Wilson's ring will actually come handy in the end (please save her life!!!).

I think I was the only one ROFL when that tango scene was on. I was laughing because I had seen pics before in the soompi thread, so I knew it was coming. And when it was on, it was so obvious what the directions of the PD/writer must have been: make babies without having sex.

Has anybody else seen the movie "Shall we dance?". The story of the bald guy that has a toupee and is admired by women only when he dances is totally from that movie and the character is originally played by Stanley Tucci. And they also use the same song by Gotan Project, but the relationship between the main characters is very different from this one. I was just curious to know if anyone else noticed it.

Shall We Dance is originally a Japanese movie and the premise of hiding the dance from the family makes better sense in that society. Check it out.

I think the tango class is set up along the lines of the dance studio in SHALL WE DANSU, the Japanese original of shall we dance.

Ramses is a little less out there than Naoto Takenaka version of the same character duality

And Veronica started out as remote and mysterious as the female dance instructor. although she seems to have warmed up a bit.

No one made mention of Vernonica's line in response to Yeon-Jae story of quitting her job--with I thought was interesting, it went something along "That kind of man you need to knock at least 10 of his teeth to feel invigorated."
It made her a very interesting character to me.

Can ANYONE please tell me what the song is called that always plays?! It doesn't have any singing.. The instrumental one! It's like tango-ish and violinish and kind of gives of the Paris feel...
Please don't say it's "Por Una Cabeza" because it's not!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know if you know the song that always plays!
Thanks!

Oh and I just had to add a comment about SK.

I get that her boyfriend used her and extorted her...

And that she apparently tried to commit suicide...

....but man do I still hate her. Can you imagine - she can't even manage to keep a guy around who is for all intents and purposes, *contracted* to be her fiancee, because that's how insufferable she is.

I think she needs to start with some close girlfriends, and then work her way up to a decent guy from there. Maybe YJ....but maybe not.

I think the viewers need to see (and I for one) is one more step for her humiliation. I think maybe a conversation where her dad tells JW about how badly she f***ed up with her last boyfriend and how he felt compelled to try and set her up with someone would do the trick.

Then before the shocked YJ has a chance to say anything, JW kiss her! OMG so YJ got no chance to tell him after realising he's serious. Hmm how does it sound? lol

This drama quickly shot to one of my favorites after ep 7.

Ji-wook's immaturity is necessary to show character development but I find it exaggerated sometimes. Someone of his stature should be less innocent than that. He's like a kid out of college tbh ><

I had doubts with this pairing but its amazing how Kim Sun Ah creates incredible chemistry with ALL her leading men. I also didn't expect much considering the premise but the actors had me hook, line, and sinker. That tango was sizzling!

I don't find him immature, more like dead inside.

The scene he had with his friend and the female playthings showed he'd been around the block, and reinforced the idea that he is somewhat emotionally dead, at least to my mind.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this episode was so HOTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ah!!!!!! that TANGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! scene was killing me. I WAS ON FIRE. i had to pause it because my heart was racing too FAST..... SO MUCH CHEMISTRY!!!. ...

thanks for this wonderful recap. it was fun to read, my favorite line that made me LOL'ED so hard was

"Good grief, so this is why they invented tango. I’m pretty sure she’s gonna drop a baby, any minute now. "(lol)" Seriously, all that denial of feelings now seems worth it, for the tango foreplay alone. Hot damn."

n-e-ways i found this clip of kim sun ah and Uhm Ki Joon in a MV together here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkykFWYan2M

CAN'T WAIT FOR EP 9!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to admit, that tango scene really got me going. I especially loved how he barged in, rolled up his sleeves (OMG, I think I died when he did that) as if he was ready to get work done. It was such a manly behavior and that my friends is what makes a man sexy, when he takes initiative!

On another note, did anybody else realize that Kim Sun Ah also danced tango in City Hall? When I first heard it mentioned in Scent of A Woman, I immediately thought back to when she danced with Cha Seung Won. Perhaps Kim Sun Ah dances the Tango in real life? Either way, she did a very good job and this episode was really great. Perhaps my favorite so far.

Aww, my heart goes out to Eun Suk, and I understand him being upset with her, but he really was too mean to that cute patient girl. He should really give things a try before he shuts them down

I wouldn't be surprised if SOW has the same type of ending as 49 days: something shocking and a bit disappointing :/

Anyway, thanks for the awesome recaps!

I agree with your comments. I started watching this thinking that ohhh its one of those melodrama that I'm going to be crying throughout the whole series. It is so much more than dying. Its living. Nothing like the other terminal illness dramas that drags from beginning til end. This ones keeps you watching for more even though you know how it will end.

The actor/actress are doing superb jobs.

Sorry, Hae-won BBF card should not be revoke for checking Yeon-jae actions. I will never support any of my girlfriends’ who chose to mess with a man in a committed relationship, woman need to respect the boundaries. The fact that she dying giving her a NO REGRETS passed but outside of that Hae-won reaction was appropriate and get 100 point on that BFF card, you not a true friend if you just sit back and watch them do things that disrespectfully as a woman. This is a K-drama land, so it’s true love, but in the real world 9 out of 10 your BFF would be some man jump off and that not cool

At first l don't really put hope to Scent for a woman. l watched it coz Lee Dong Wook starring. But now, this is the first drama in my mind, so intense, to compare with Hearstring (too slow and no plot)-boring, Spy Myung Wol - they need to do something fast after Han left to LA. Only Protect the boss really intertaining, it come 2nd. place.

What l wanted to write has already be written above, of course its about that tango dance. l've seen Al Pacino in Youtube. The dance is good, definetely, otherwise he won't win oscar for that. But l can tell the sense and the feel of passionate to each other is more shown in this drama. Ji Wook and Yeon Jae really damn hot.

Started from Ji Wook take off his jacket (do not know where he threw it, and then forgot when he's get to his car), to unbutton his sleeves, and walked up so intense to her had made our nurve blast off. Seeing her move backward two times, may be wonder hat he's going to do to her, makes him want her more and more that tempted him to just hold and grap her close.

With hot and closeness between two, doesn't need any conversation to picture their feelings especially the hot and passion feelings surrounds Ji Wook. His heavy breath and both unlock lips are damn bloody hot scene l've ever encountered in Korean Drama (l've seen really a lot K-Drama). I've rewatch it over and over. With YJ let him grap her close, let him lead the dance, sort of do-whatever-you-want-to-me scene. Ahhggr......

Lee Dong Wook, with gorgeous body and perfect from head to toe, passion lips to kiss, tall and everything, he just so handsome.

About the story, it is just a story. l hope the writer twist the ending by giving them more and more time together not just remaining 5 months for love. Even its unfair to JW incase YJ really die in the end, if they really know how to make us,audience feel the emotion thruout the drama, sad ending is just acceptable. Like in Titanic, its a sad ending but still, a lot watch it multiple times. Anyhow, l hope, please and please, no sad ending as everybody were thinking. Twist it a bit. Please don't be a predictable drama where everybody knew that the ending goes to.

Can't wait for next episode. Raw will do!!!

You can't really compare the two tangos. The intention behind Pacino's tango is completely different.

Ah! The tango scene! The way he 'tore' his coat off his back, the way he folded up his sleeves and strode purposefully towards her remind me of how a lion stalked and captured its prey... He was like a lion moving swiftly and menacningly towards its 'prized catch'... And she was like the stunned 'gazelle' realising that its in danger and yet knowing it has no escape...

l agree that in this episode, everybody were talking about that hot tango dance . That's a romance drama we're talking about.

It's just like, l want sex tonight but this dance will do. YJ side - take all of me. The dance floor shows a great chemistry between those two actors as it moves audience's adrenalin, beating fast (not only bed scene can do that to us). Their tango is so hot and sensual, intimately bloody. Wonder how many screen shot it takes for that which finalise it so great.

Lee Dong Wook, as in earlier episodes shows us how hot he is. Two shower scenes to shows his upper body (God bless army training). His untouchable between two lips is really die to kiss. He is damn perfect.

We actually do not sure that the ending will see YJ die even she is dying. Hopefully the ending won't be as everybody know it. Hope the writer doesn't dissapoint us, even sad ending cannot be deniable, please do it so audience can take it. Like 49 days, l like it so much just to give me shock and disappointing ending. Regret of watching (except for Jung Il Woo). Please do not again in Scent for a Woman. Make is nice scent, please....

Continuing with the lion and its prey imagery...

The lion advanced and planted its paws on the stunned gazelle. She struggled and made some feeble attempts to escape.. .But the lion was too powerful and its gaze too piercing for her... Realising the futility of her efforts, she capitulated and gave in completely, utterly...

By far my favorite episode so far! The Tango scene...What more can be said that hasn't been already!? It was so sexy and steamy! The way he just walked to her and took charge!

And to see Lee Dong Wook make such cute loveable faces! I could just die of LDW overload! =P

It was heartbreaking seeing Yeon Jae tell Hye-Won about her cancer though. It'll be tough seeing her admit it to others too. Can't wait for the next episodes!

I love that this drama is making us think/ reflect on issues (what does a cancer patient/ dying person has a 'right' or not to do, and have a pass on it, etc) as pointed out by the previous comments.

About Hae-won's reactions to Yeon-jae's liking/meeting up with Ji-wook, her issues maybe are related to incidents that put Yeon-jae in a bad light before- say being accused of coveting Wilson's ring- to which Yeon-jae is completely innocent. Because Yeon-jae has always stick to what is morally, ethically right. As she heard from Yeon-jae before (Yeon-jae crying on the lobby)- why cant these people let her live a life (without difficulty)...

And now this one, liking and thinking of (and actually doing it) dating engaged Ji-wook, it is Yeon-jae actively doing something wrong. Something she wouldn't do before.

It definitely rings that 1- something is wrong with Yeon-jae, acting differently from the "upright" (cant come up with a better term) *sweatdrop* Yeon-jae; 2-she isn't telling her bestfriend what is the matter, and why she acts this way; 3- is this the kind of life Yeon-jae wants to live, after fighting so hard to keep her name and reputation clean, she now wants to date the fiance of the person who filed a case against her, the person who is so convinced she's a gold digger.

So what's a bestfriend's got to do? What would a bestfriend of Lee Yeon-jae do? Lee Yeon-jae, the woman who finally decided to quit her job, become so bold, doing things she didnt normally do before, getting stuck in situations that involved a lawsuit, so intent in keeping her name clean- now this?

hae-won is giving us a good picture/ idea of how other people close to Yeon-jae may/will react if they find out about the cancer. she's confused, alarmed, concerned but helpless with what Yeon-jae is doing recently. and now she's aware of what the situation really is, she assures her friend of her support.

gah. and now happiness doesnt guarantee 0 problems. the price of being able to do what you want. ahhh YJ... T_T and what you are not telling them and him.

ack.

(a clash with Se-Kyung's family -by 'pursuing' Ji-wook- wouldn't really be a pass to living a peaceful life. I think this is Hae-won's concern with what Yeon-jae is doing. And Yeon-jae so wanted to just to be able to live her life, right? *remember the lobby crying session?* so there, that's what i think is the reason to Hae-won's reactions to Yeon-jae's recent 'bold' acts.)
