Joo-won and Joo Sang-wook courted for new medical drama

New drama alert! KBS is lining up their next Monday-Tuesday drama to follow Shark — a medical drama called Green Scalpel — and the production is reportedly courting Joo-won (Gaksital) and Joo Sang-wook (Special Affairs Team TEN) to star. They’re both considering the roles and working on contract negotiations, so nothing’s final yet. If Joo-won signs on, he’ll star as a developmentally disabled young man who has the personality of a child, but the skills of a genius surgeon. So it’s Joo-won: Doogie Howser M.D.? Wait, you guys know who Doogie Howser is, right? Suddenly feeling very old…

The new drama comes from PD Ki Min-soo of hit family drama Ojakkyo Brothers, and writer Park Jae-bum of OCN forensic procedural God’s Quiz (he wrote all three seasons). Medical dramas aren’t really my thing, but Joo-won getting back together with Ojakkyo’s director is definitely good news, and the twist on the usual medical drama might be worth a watch.

The “human drama” is about an autistic young man with the personality of a grade-schooler (stunted developmentally at around ten years old), who becomes a pediatric surgeon. That’s even crazier than just plain child genius doctor. It sounds like the kind of role that gets actors awards, so I have a feeling it won’t be passed up so easily, even with injuries, movies, and musicals keeping him plenty busy.

Joo Sang-wook is up for the ace pediatric doctor role, so he’ll be Joo-won’s rival in the hospital. It would crack me up if Joo Sang-wook played his role straight out of White Tower or [insert serious medical drama here], and Joo-won countered the rivalry with neener-neeners and made-ya-look jokes. Considering Joo-won’s already a teenager trapped in the body of a twenty-something, how much of a stretch could it be?

Green Scalpel follows Shark, which puts its premiere in August.

@SS Well said! I completely agree with you!! I don't care what anyone says, Joo Won was an absolute powerhouse in Gaksital and and nothing, no matter how big a flop, will ever convince me that he isn't a good actor.

I think this would be a great opportunity for him! And to all the people who are criticizing him for trying to be overexposed, I think you are being a little biased. I admire Joo Won's passion for acting and his humbleness. I am so tired of seeing so many of the pretty boy actors concentrating on maintaining their popularity by doing endless fan meetings and CFs!

BTW, I am an 80's baby and definitely get the Doogie Howser reference...I used to love that show :D

I sooooo get the reference of Doogie Howser :D As they say is "Old is Gold"! It was one of my top teen/adult shows and NPH was one of my many crushes. Yeah I have aged, but I am glad to have been there to experience it :)
Guys, let's hear more on the developments of the drama rather than commenting which actor deserves more attention and who does not deserve it.
Popularity will be there for sometime but if their acting is top notch the question of popularity does not die out, ain't it?!

OMG. This is good news. Tired of him? NOPE!

After his first debut in Baker King, he acted in Ojakgyo Brothers, and in that drama... My love for him started to grow. I can't believe the same Joo Won as Ma Jun in Baker King can be that deliciously yummy and soooo good as Tae Hee in Ojakgyo Brothers.

I thanks the drama for making him likeable and let me appreciate the vast talent that he has. And in Gaksitaaaal... well.. well... what more can I say.. He's so fine as Lee Kang To.

But...Yeah, I didn't finish my Level 7 who? drama because of the lame storyline. Eeeep.

I want to see him in this drama. Badly.

Joo Wonie, my puppy. Fighting!

I don't understand why people are saying that joo won should not be over exposed and back down. It's like you are telling a top student to stop studying hard because he/she is scoring all As.He started acting 3 years ago and it is not wrong for him to catch up with other actors.Almost all of his projects have high quality(except 7GRADE) and he is at 'fault' because of this?Joo won still has many things to improve in terms of acting but he is a very good actor and that's the reason directors want to court him.

And Poor LMH.I am not even his fan but I feel pity for him.Give him a break .

Directors may want to court him for a lot of reasons (i.e. by sheer luck he managed to be in 3 projects with big ratings... and no, you will never convince me that he had anything to do with those ratings) but being a brilliant actor ain't one of them.

Of cos,he has nothing to do with the ratings. It is the hardwork of everyone and that's why the dramas succeeded.I will not force you to think that he is brilliant actor.NOT YET but he is on the way to become one.My View and belief. With hardwork,it is hard to fail.

It's ridiculous to say joo won is a guarantee for rating even I also adore him. The success of a drama/movie is the result of teamwork and good scripts. But joo won He's great actor in my mind. I'm waiting eagerly to see each of his new project. Fighting ! Joo won , you are a human actor whom i adore and respect.

Wooooooo. I miss him in drama land like crazy. Cant get enough with JW. Each of his role is absolutely different, so I never get bored seeing him on screen. I'm dreaming of August now.

Wait ! He 's filming a movie right, he also prepares for a musical. How does this drama fit with his schedule ? Can his health allow him to do this ? Anyway, I'm smiling now, imaging seeing JW as a new character.

Does anyone else hear Green Scalpel and think maybe it needs to sit in some disinfectant for a while?

I can't imagine Green here to mean earth friendly, since they don't increase green house gases with use or leave behind other pollution...

Anyway. Haven't enjoyed all of JW's dramas, but half of them, and JSW is watchable in anything after That Fool, even if the dramas (Paradise Ranch and Thornbirds) were both painful.

YOU KNOW WHAT, I was just wondering a few days ago. "I'd be VERY nice if Joowon plays a (hot) genius doctor."
And my dream only needs one more step to actually come true :')))

Please consider it well, boy

As long as I can remember, I've never finished a single medical drama because of so many reasons.

But if Joowon takes that role, I'll definitely sit down and finish it. Playing an autistic young doctor won't be easy and I think he will rock it. If this drama is a big hit, it would take him to the whole new level. (Then all he has to do is participate in a cool movie)

I know Joo Sangwook, but I've never watched his drama so I can't really say anything about him

Please la you all there is no need to argue over who take the lead right

I mean now the pd find joo won first that mean they see him suitable for this Role
Unless you are the pd then can choose the actors you like but you are not

Somemore nothing has been confirmed why argue over who act

and it s very childish to criticise other actors
All actors are working very hard so we shouldn't criticise them
Even those with lesser fandom should be respected

This is either going to go incredible right...or terribly, terribly wrong. Needless to say, I'll watch at least the first two episodes because, come on, who can pass up clueless, child-minded, genius surgeon? Seriously. Incredibly right...or horribly, horribly wrong.

I like Jo Won, but if he comeback this fast and to often in small screen People eventually will get tired of him. He should try to hiatus for a while and let people missing him and daydreaming about him. If he shows up to often I'm afraid he'll loose his charm and people will think that there's nothing to miss about him. And it's a pity for a talented actor like him.

It is more like the PD wanted him and Joo Sang Wook in this drama since they have both worked with him (with JW in Ojakgyo Brothers and JSW in The Accidental Couple). And this drama has been making casting rounds since the end of March 2013.
In fact Kim Soo Hyun was approached for a role in this drama in April, but since he is impersonating a mentally challenged person in Secretly, Greatly he didn't move forward with it.
I don't think it is JW who wants to make many appearances in the year since his plate is already full (as quoted by girlfriday in the article). But when the director expresses interest to work with certain actor(s) with the story being seemingly interesting and if it is worthwhile to be included in their job resume, why would they deny the offered roles?!

Sorry, I don't see any reason for an actor have to keep his hiatus unless he really cares for his fame more than his professionalism. Joo Won is still a rookie, he only has 4 drama so far. It's important for him to improve himself. He's not qualified and experienced enough to choose the best directors or the best scripts, or sitting there and waiting for them to come.

As far as I know, Joo Won has been working nonstop since he debuted. He used to faint and be admitted in hospital during the filming of SIU.

Maybe you feel he's in over-exposure or over-working. But it's his choice. He said that he would rather working more than just relaxing. People have different lifestyles. He's one of the few actors who cares least about the fame, that why people usually see him on headline of new projects, rather than hold fan meetings and shooting CFs.

I am so proud of him. Even to get an offer of such a difficult role is a big deal. It’s a real challenge, it’s a whole new level.
If he’ll accept this offer I’ll so looks forward to it. I find him extremely talented and roles like this one can help to open new sides of his talent.

Medical drama is not really my thing (I didn't even finish Dr. Jin) BUT if it's Joo Won trapped in an adult's body making wonders (which is not too far from his REAL character) this surely have my attention.

We all know that Joo Won was pressured before. People kept on calling him The Ratings Man. His recent drama (7th Level Service) was some sort of a blessing. It didn't hit the ratings which made the people expect less from him. He had to break his Ratings Man image.

With his busy schedule, I am greedy to say that I surely hope that he will say YES to this drama. This character is surely hard to pass.

I am thing of the L's character from the Death Note right now.

Joo Won had never wanted the title Prince of Ratings to be bestowed on him, the media used it to headlined their articles especially after 3 consecutive outings in Baker King, OB and Gaksital. He has always maintained that it's a contribution of all factors and everyone involved in the drama.

As much as I had wanted 7th Level to be a success, its failing was in a way a blessing in disguise as he tasted his so called first failure and realized it was not as bad as he had thought. He gained experience in trying out a new genre. Likewise, I am sure he knows the challenges of this role and like some said here, it could either be a big win or a huge failure. If he is able to adjust his schedule and confirm this, I thank him for his guts. 2 consecutive failures will be harder to stomach but this man doesn't want to be a star, he wants to be an actor. Even if it takes more failures and years to become a good one, I think he will continue to try as long as he continues to get the opportunity.

By the way, I am curious why you make reference to L character in Death Note?

I agree with you. He wants to be an actor, not a star. And about your question, in my opinion L has a personality of a child. He eats sweets all the time and never really acted as a grown up but in the field of investigating and detective works, he was surely a genius.

If Joo Won say YES to this drama, he would be like ‘L’ in a medical drama. Just my opinion..

Woww, totally excited.. The character really suit to JW I think, with his great acting and childish side. Must be cool and cute in the same time.
Just realized that JW and JSW together win kbs entertainment award for rookie MC last year. Will be great to see them together in drama.

Hope they will say 'yes'.

I hope Joo won and Sangwook oppa are in the cast. I don't really care who is the lead, I can love the lead, side character, villain as long as they are inspiring. I haven't seen JW in a medical drama, I'm curious. If JSW is going to be the autistic doctor, hmmm...I hope I won't have nightmares. I saw him in Qualifications of Men playing Nolbu's wife. huhuhu my cool oppa. T_T

I'd like to know exactly why the Scalpel is... Green?! Unless it's a punny title which I don't get because I don't know the language, otherwise I'm thinking that I'd be running in the opposite direction from that hospital where my health is concerned. Even if everyone down to the receptionists are geniuses. Or if "green" is also symbolic in Korea of lack of experience and skills... in which case I wouldn't take my chances with these doctors anyway. xD

Also, my trail of knowledge leading to Doogie Howser goes like this: How I Met Your Mother + Dr Horrible -> sudden impulse to become an expert on all things Neil Patrick Harris -> Google + Wikipedia
...does that count? Even a little bit? You really aren't that old, girlfriday! xD

Uff, a tough choice for me. I always love Joowon no matter he breaks my heart on kissing scenes and heals it again with his aegyoness 2D1N (that has faded since I don't really watch it anymore, has it improved after the guest-relaying eps?)and I, too always love Joo Sangwook ever since (although QoM had been canceled months ago and I haven't seen his gentle manly man attitude any further). Well, never mind choosing, I've been introduced to a new (nonsensible) way to watching called "Love both leads, the bad & good, but love the non leads more after it ended."
