A lawbreaking bad guy role for Yoo Ah-in?

Yoo Ah-in (Jang Ok-jung, Live By Love) has a potential new movie in the works, and is in the “considering favorably” stage of the casting stage. The movie is titled Veteran and unfolds as an ex-detective pursues a lawbreaking young chaebol, which means Yoo Ah-in would be wading into bad-guy waters. As far as I’m concerned, that’s a great thing.

I expect Veteran to become quite the buzz project, coming from director Ryu Seung-wan of blockbuster thriller The Berlin File and also starring Hwang Jung-min, who joined this project early on. The role Yoo Ah-in is up for is a third-generation chaebol who commits all sorts of evil deeds and hides behind his shield of money. The description is vague enough to leave the door open for his character being redeemable, since he’s said to be heading toward the wrong side of the law (and therefore not there yet). But the whole part where you use wealth as excuse to be an asshole? (Or worse, a criminal.) That puts him pretty far on the path toward that dark side.

This could be a well-timed turn for Yoo Ah-in, who has built up a solid reputation after playing mostly good guys. But I’ve seen enough flashes of darker moments in his characters to feel he’s got a lot of untapped range in him, just waiting for the right role. In fact, I think he may be better in darker, more conflicted roles entirely, so hopefully he takes on the challenge. As for Hwang Jung-min, well, he’s so reliably good that I hardly feel the need to speculate — he’ll be wonderful, as always.

Veteran will wrap up its casting shortly and plans to begin filming in February or March, to release later next year.

It's a shame he doesn't have much luck with dramas. But I suppose films are more prolific anyway so good for him. He's a pretty awesome actor imo!

I think his last movie "tough as iron" is not doing well not like "Punch" movie which also cast kim yunseok (his movies always getting box office hit)

It's better than TOP's The Commitment, in terms of admission numbers. It only lasted for 3 weeks.

Korean movies these days seem hard to get through 3 million viewers after September's box office Face Reader.

Yay for YAI.

But he's not doing great in his drama selection. Wonder why.

He and his King of Fashion co-star, Lee Je-hoon should just stay in Chungmoro and make good movie!

Not because he's not doing great in his drama selection but he is a brilliant actor who is fearless to against the kdrama mainstream by the roles he took in Fashion King and Jang Ok Jung. http://koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/culture/2013/06/201_137610.html

I'm glad he is taking a break from dramaland and doing more movies. Still waiting to watch him with Kim Hae-Sook Yoo in Tough As Iron.

Hwang Jung Min is a great actor. I'm still trying to catch up with his other projects.

Yes that's right. This is from the director of Berlin, and this also stars Hwang. Maybe an extra comma is in order.

Yes, more movie roles for Ah In! Since he seems to have such bad luck with dramas. And now especially with senior actor Hwang Jung Min as part of the cast, this is looking very favorable.

I have been fan of Ryu Seung-wan ever since The unjust and Berlin File just made my belief in him solid gold.
I super love Berlin file with Ha jungwa and Ryeo Seung Bum being just plain awesome in that movie.

Then when you add my favorite dorky ahjusshi with RSW thats just mind blown!!!

Yoo Ah in, should not think anymore, just sign the dotted line and do this project!

The is such a fantastic opportunity for You Ah In as an actor...Ryu Swung Wan is seriously amazing...Berlin File may have been the bigger hit but I think his earlier works like The Unjust and Crying Fist are even more phenomenal ......he really has a flair fir going dark and gritty..I've always thought Yoo Ah In was talented but his recent works have made think that he needs good direction to guide him...not that he doesn't have what it takes to get there... And with Hwang Jung Min also attached this could be really great

Yoo Ah-in will always be the sweet Moon Jae-shin of SKKS for me. His wading in bad boy zone will be yummy also, since he was showing some yummy cooking skills in Running Man earlier...

This should be interesting. Kim Soo Hyun was the director's first choice but he turned down this role citing other committments, namely his upcoming drama.

It's not that Yoo Ah In has bad luck in dramas..I don't agree..It's because he's a brilliant actor who is fearless to take a risk of choosing drama which is against the maainstream k-drama as what he did in Fashion King and Jang Ok Jung. Another thing is because we have to realize that not all gr8 actors can make every drama hits in terms of viewership or rating. Even Song Hye Kyo and Hyun Bin failed in Worlds Within drama.
