Name That Drama: Rooftop kisses and masks

As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.

  1. Sounds like Taeryn watched her drama while in Korea, but it’s been a few years:

I was hoping you could identify this drama for me. It’s been bugging me for years not knowing this drama. I’m pretty sure this was from 2008 or less because that was the last time I have been to Korea.

I think this was the first episode but a mom and her daughter are at a massage place getting their backs massaged. They talk about the other daughter (the second daughter who is the main character) and about how she is clumsy. The scene then changes to the main character who is at a foreign country like Vietnam or something and she is looking at vases(?). She breaks one and the owner gets mad and starts to yell. She starts apologizing in what I believe was English yet it doesn’t work. A guy, the main character, comes in asking what’s wrong in Korean and he drags her along as they run away. That’s all I can remember… I hope you can find out because I remember really enjoying it. Thanks!

  2. There may be more than one drama that fits smileychedder’s clue, but see if you can name any and all that apply.

I was thinking about this drama I watched where the younger sister called her brother (the male lead) hyung instead of oppa… I don’t remember anything about it except for that fact but if anyone knows the name please share! 🙂

  3. Neneh’s clues are specific, and yet, probably apply to multiple shows. Oh, dramas.

I don’t know what year this drama was made. The story is of this young designated driver who gets into a car accident that kills the fiancee of this lady. He later ends up falling in love with the lady. Second lead guy is the best friend of the dead fiancee. This is a K-drama.

  4. I hope somebody knows the answer to Caroline’s query because I’d like to see it:

I am looking a music video, drama or movie I watched 2 years ago. All I remember is that it ended with this two men kissing on the rooftop. The first guy was standing on the rooftop all by himself at first. I think he was remembering painful details in his past. Then suddenly, this other guy, whom I think had previously rejected him, bursts onto the roof in true K-drama fashion. He walks decidedly towards his as some dramatic music plays and plants one on the shorter guys lips. Does anybody have a clue what drama or music video this scene was from?

  5. I’m thinking the title probably came up in the post Gladis mentions, but no harm in asking again here:

I saw it like four years ago, it was about trot (I just remembered for the Trot Lovers post). It was a guy who had a rock band but he couldn’t make it through rock, he could sing trot but he was so embarrassed that sang with a wrestler mask, he was very famous and at the end he took the mask off. It was comical, was the first movie I watched in my Korean course. I would love to watch it again. Thank you ^_^

One of the possible for things for number 2 is Panda and Hedgehog. But the girl wasn't really a lead...

Well they said the guy was the lead not the younger sister. And if I remember correctly it was Choi Jin Hyuk's little sister and he was the second male lead. I vote for Panda and Hedgehog as well.

Could #2 be Naked Kitchen? Starring Sin Min Ah and Joo Ji Hoon? A movie, where Shin Min Ah calls her husband hyung, because when they were kids she was the only girl in a group of boys, and that's all she heard from the boys. (2009)
She meets Joo Ji Hoon at an art gallery (they don't know each other)-and they have sex behind a screen. Then they go their separate ways, and she goes home and tells her husband what she did.
Things develop from there.

2. Could be Panda and Hedgehog. The sister of the second lead guy calls him, and I think maybe other guys as well, hyung, but him for sure.

5. Pretty sure it's Highway Star starring Cha Tae Hyun.

The female lead called her "oppa" hyung though in Painter of The Wind cause she's disguising as a boy. As I remember, s/he always called him hyung, not hyungnim

Number 3 sounds like "Crazy for You" AKA "Crazy in Love" starring Yoon Kye Sang from 2007.

No. 1 - the mentioning about Vietnam made me think of Golden Bride. It is a long drama, I don't remember the scene, but I only watch it on and off.
No. 3 - Could it be Secret? But the second lead isn't best friend of the dead fiance...
Hmm.... I am not very good at this. :P

No. 1 can't be Golden Bride b/c her mother is Vietnamese and they were born and raised in Vietnam. She never lived in S. Korea until she got married.

#2 sounds like Panda and Hedgehog starring Lee Donghae (It's Okay, Daddy's Girl) and Choi Jinhyuk (Emergency Couple, Gu Family Book). The female leads were Yoon Seungah, and Yoon Soyoung. The sister in question is played by Oh Yina. But then she goes around calling every older guy hyungnim haha.

I need help in identifying this old American movie. TIA.

It's about two couples: 1 couple is ghosts while the other couple is living. The living couple were having problems in their marriage and decided to visit a house where the ghost couple inhabited. Throughout the movie, there's mischief and each couple realize that they're in love with the other spouse (Dead husband-Living wife & Living husband-dead wife). So in the end, the dead wife somehow became alive while the living wife became dead so they all can be with the ones they love. I've watched this when I was a little girl and I really want to watch it now.

1. sounds like "I Am Bliss/Happy" or "Happiness" (2008, SBS). The scene about the girl breaking vases and a guy (Ha Suk Jin, I feel in love with him in this show) coming to save her is in around first few episode (2-5), though the girl running was not the main character even though at times it felt like it. Anyway the scene was HongKong not Vietnam...

2. Sounds like "Coffee Prince" though we can fairly establish that the oppa/hyung in CP was really a girl even though in their world it was not obvious.

3. "Crazy for Love" with main leads is Yoon Kye Sang opposite Lee Mi Yeon and 2nd male lead is Lee Jong Hyuk.

5. "Highway Star" by definitely Cha Tae Hyun

Can confirm #1 and #3.

And yes, in Happiness the main character is not the girl in Hong Kong, but her older sister played by Kim Hyo Jin.
Don't be fooled by the title though. The main couple begins the drama together, and this show is all about angst and problems in their relationship, not really about happiness. The younger couple is cute, but overall it was a disappointing drama.

just checked the scene for number 1, it is on episode 2.
The one getting the massage was the mother and the sister in law (wife of the eldest son, 1st child) and they were talking about the main lead (daughter, 2nd child). But the scene with the breaking of items and the guy saving her is the youngest daughter (maknae, 3rd child)

I work in a dental office, and one of my patients came up with a drama question..She said the drama was memorable because the mom was rich, her son and daughter were bratty, and one day the mom decided she had it with both of them and threw tons of cash off the roof of their building. The show was aired in the US with subtitles, maybe in the 90's, and she is pretty sure it was a K-Drama. I would love to tell her the name of the drama next time I see her. Thanks everyone!

# 4 is ringing a bell, but I can't quite bring it to mind. It seems to me it was a movie and the rooftop scene was a flashback from when the two guys were in high school. The one guy had a crush on the main guy, but when he kissed him it broke up their friendship. During the course of the drama they became friends again, and that scene showed why the friendship was broken to begin with.

I've been thinking the same thing!! I thought maybe it was Jung Il Woo and Kim Jae Wook. But I don't think they've been in a drama together. It was definitely high school and the one receiving the kiss was a bit of a loner, but a fighter. I vaguely remember a cake?

Loved Antique Bakery! But, there was no kiss in the high school part, Kim Jae Wook just confessed (beautifully....)

#4 definitely has to be a movie...

There's no way we'd get a k-drama with two guys kissing (unless one of them were a girl in drag or sth like that). In ten years maybe.

There's K drama romcom I saw last year but I think it may have first come out 2000 onwards. The first episode shows a girl who runs out of her own wedding. She is helped by a guy in a motorcycle. He's a photographer. The two of them pretend to be married in order for the girl to keep living in an apartment that she had already made a deposit on. The apartment is within the compound where an elderly couple and their son are residing. Also in the storyline are a loan shark, a failed attempt to set up a flower shop, and the guy's mother living in a beautiful house on the top of a hill (?) Would appreciate your help on this one.

#4 is not Whats Up?. Whats Up? is not about trot and while Daesung did sing using a mask, it's wasn't a wrestlers mask. He was also very successful as a rock artist, but he had to stop because of the publicity. He wore the mask to keep people from connecting him to his famous mother. Daesung sings trot in real life.
