The Lonely, Shining Goblin in his secret garden

I don’t know why, but I thought we’d get something a little more supernatural for our first glimpse of Gong Yoo (Big) as a goblin. It seems silly, since I knew that goblin Gong Yoo would look exactly like human Gong Yoo, so what was I expecting? In any case, here’s our first set of stills for tvN’s new fantasy romance The Lonely, Shining Goblin, featuring our goblin hero being his sad, beautiful, and lonesome self.

The new drama from hit writer Kim Eun-sook (Descended From the Sun, Heirs, Secret Garden) and PD Lee Eung-bok (Descended From the Sun, Discovery of Romance, Secret) is a fantasy romance about a strange and sad goblin named Kim Shin (the new title includes a pun on his name, Shin, written with the hanja for “god/ghost”). He lives an immortal life, but his fate is described as pitiful, and he seeks a human bride in order to end his immortality. Gee, how bad could living forever be?

Kim Go-eun (Cheese in the Trap) plays his love interest, a high school senior (grumble, grumble) who remains optimistic despite her painful life. The drama will feature a bromance between the goblin and an amnesiac reaper, played by Lee Dong-wook (Bubblegum), as they become roommates and usher souls to the afterlife together.

Yoo Inna (One More Happy Ending) co-stars as Lee Dong-wook’s love interest, a sweet and immature owner of a chicken shop, and Yook Sung-jae (Village: Secret of Achiara) plays a chaebol heir, the thirteenth generation of a family that’s taken care of the goblin. In exchange for their massive wealth, I would imagine. We haven’t been told explicitly what the goblin’s powers are in this drama, but they’re usually associated with wealth in folklore.

Well, the goblin looks appropriately sad and beautiful here, but he’s going to have other emotions, right? Because I’m all for setting a mood, but swoony, happy goblin trumps sad, lonely goblin any day of the week.

The Lonely, Shining Goblin airs on Fridays and Saturdays following The K2, beginning in December.

Is there a need to make his love interest a "high school senior"? Really? I'm not sure if it's even going to add any substance to the story.

I know, it's ridiculous. At least make her a college student (I'd really appreciate a grad student). She can still work her ninety-five part-time jobs like a typical hard-working Candy while going to school, right? I want an academically smart and realistic heroine! Let's be a little less icky, dramas, for once? This is just a crazy age gap.

Aaaand now this show sounds way too much like Twilight - with the lonely shining, the old supernatural dude, and a teenager love interest.

That's Twilight.

"a high school senior who remains optimistic despite her painful life."
Hmmm. Maybe part of her past pain is that she's been held back fourteen times and she's actually 26 years old? And she's optimistic that THIS YEAR she will actually be able to graduate?

That'd fix it for me. . .

Kim Go Eun does not look like a high school senior and anything that has anything to do with romance between possible minors is off putting for me. Why, why not make her a graduate student?? I think it will go from High School to more maturity with a time jump but this was unnecessary.

What scares me the most is that this is the same writer that gave us The Heirs.

So I'm guessing Kim Go-eun will be a high school senior until episode 14, then she graduates, ends up running after the goblin, gets hit by a random speeding Kia in one of those crosswalks of doom, doesn't die but is in a coma, wakes up, pulls out the IV, gets a hold of her samsung smartphone, rushes to meet the goblin, gets a big hug, a fake kiss with a 360 degree turn in either a rainy setting or a snowy night fall.

Yeah, a high schooler would be too young for Gong Yoo, but then again, who wouldn't be too young for him? He's a freaking gabillion year old Goblin for crying out loud. Also, if Kim Go-eun's gonna look anything like how she did in Eungyo and the more recent Canola (which I'm pretty sure she will), she'll fit right in as a high schooler. Now let's just hope there's gonna be a time jump and/or have graduate quickly and get out of high school and maybe in college or something.

It her current hairstyle, it ages her. Maybe they could change the hair but still I wish they didn't got that route. Or even if they do, its done on flashbacks and move to the present timeline soon. Yoo Inna looks younger compared to her in the script reading session but none can pass as high school girls. Hair can change a lot so I am hoping that is what they do.

Reading the description for Kim Go Eun's character is giving me horrific SWWTN flashbacks where they gave Lee Yu Bi's character, Aang's personality without the pathos, powers or tattoo... well she had a scar or something.
It made me so mad. I was already pissed at how her storyline was handled in Gu Family Book( a compelling one that got sidelined) and was looking forward to her lead role where she'd properly display her acting chops but they made her some kind of happy-go-lucky who munches on sugar in her spear time.

Now am reading the character descriptions for the girls and they all sound like sweet, innocent rays of sunshine for the brooding souls of the goblin and reaper. I hope I'm wrong. Maybe they'd go for a comedic vibe for all. Oh well, there's always the pretty to tide me through... Wow, these got long! How? When?

Required fields are marked *

Well, apparently Kim Go-eun's character, Ji Eun-tak, can see spirits/ghosts, so that should make for some interesting character behavior/personality. As for Yoo In-ah's Sunny character, I think she's going to be quite sassy seeing that she's into materialistic things and is so used to men falling for her left and right that when she comes across a man that doesn't even give her the time of day, she's going to wonder why that is... Idk how it's all gonna play out, but I'm optimistic that it'll be good.

I am one of the few whom were never sold by anything penned by Kim Eun Sook. I dropped almost all of her dramas including DOTS and Secret Garden. But she is a star writer in Korea and despite that I always find her writings rather cheesy, she definitely knows her way and consistent in striking the right cords and cater for the taste of the korean audiences, or fair to say most drama viewers.

Jang Hyuk turned down Secret Garden.

I'm another who has never really liked anything by Kim Eun-sook. I had the misfortune of watching bits of Secret Garden when it was on TV and it gave me the hives.

Anyway, I hope this goes well for Kim Go-eun.

0

That goes to say that Jang Hyuk is one of a kind. I read somewhere that Gong Yoo was the first choice for DOTS and SJK was casted only because GY turned down the role. I don't know for whatever reason he didn't want to do DOTS but now he is going to headline KES' written drama.

0

Jang Hyuk didn't turn it down, he confirmed to star and Sidus decided to ruin it all by trying to put Park Jae Bum in there and Kim Eun Sook wasn't having any of that and kicked both Jang Hyuk and Park Jae Bum off the show.

0

I've never been able to finish a drama from her neither. But this is Gong Yoo and I'll deal. I swear if he's him 'Big' on me again I may ask for a separation. Suffering through once, was once too many and enough.

Everything except the cast is sounding so unappealing. Writer, PD, plot, character descriptions... none of them are very reassuring.

And yuck at making her a high schooler. He's a gabillion years old. Even if we forget the ickiness of it, I'm pretty sure her maturity level would be so far behind his that there's no way he'd be sincerely interested. I so want to watch Gong Yoo, but ugh.... Nothing sounds good about this. Somebody save the cast!!

I don't trust this writer but the 4 episodes of DOTS I watched and Tumblr watched were beautifully shot so I'll be watching. I mean it's a freaking weekly dose of Gong Yoo.
