Name That Drama: Movie edition

As always, feel free to email us your questions and requests for future Name That Drama installments.

  1. Name Those Two Korean Movies

I remember two Korean movies, probably from the early 90s, and I’ve thought about it over many years trying to remember the titles. Since they’re older movies, I’m not sure if the Dramabeans community would know, but I’d appreciate the help!

The first one is harder. It was about a man and woman and a young child, I think a boy around age five? I think I remember a ferris wheel somewhere in the movie, but the only thing I remember for sure is that the ending scene had the man somehow looking at a secretly filmed video? CCTV? Confession video? It was of the woman, possibly about the kid being his. And he ran out of the room to find her. The hair styles and fashion of the movie were definitely late 80s, early 90s.

I have more details about the second movie. The movie is about two brothers who immigrated to the states when they were in elementary school. They were super close, and the younger one was more outgoing. I remember a scene when a new Korean girl with a strong Saturi (country accent) started at the school, and the younger brother was tasked with introducing her around. Something tragic must have happened, because when they became adults, the brothers seemed almost estranged. The older one was a nerdy Harvard student (possibly a med student?) doing handstands against the wall in-between study breaks, and the younger one being his partner and/or gangster.

Would love to rewatch these childhood movies at some point, thank you so much for your help!

  2. Name That Other Movie

    Hi Beanies,

I don’t remember correctly, but it’s a movie—a thriller, I think. The leading male was a photographer and had a girlfriend. But one day in his studio, the lights flicker and we see something that looks like a ghost, and it starts to appear on every photo he takes.

Later, after further investigation, it is believed that the ghost is of an ex-girlfriend of his who committed suicide after he betrayed her during her school days. I can’t remember the rest. I’d like to watch it again, but I don’t know the title.

  3. Okay, this is kind of turning into a Name That Movie Edition, but let’s just roll with it

    Hello,

For a long time, I have been trying to find a movie that is about going to the past. I remember that a woman took photos. And her boyfriend found a camera and went to the past, where the photos were taken. I think it ended wit him saving her. Does anyone know the name of this one? Please help. I desperately need to know the name! I’ve been trying to find it, and I can’t.

  4. This one actually could be a drama, or a movie

This is such a magnificent feature. Cheers to whoever thought it up. We always have those little snippets that get stuck in our brain, and when we can’t figure out where they came from they start to take up even bigger spaces there. Kind of like an earworm, but I guess more like a drama-brainworm.

I have gone through internet lists of Korean time travel dramas and films to try to figure this one out. I’m fairly certain it’s Korean, but I suppose it could be a Taiwanese or Japanese drama, too. A woman somehow has the opportunity to go back in time to try to convince her high school self to go for a different guy. Perhaps her ol’ bestie or the nerdy one who liked her in school became rich. And her relationship with the more popular one, who she had gone after and ended up with, did not turn out well in the end?

I recall her brawling, or at least being quite at odds with her younger self. I recall an outdoor concert scenario. Maybe something about a radio or music player? She was pretending to be some cousin or relative of her younger, bratty self. As an adult, she still seemed a bit immature and materialistic.

I don’t even remember how it ends. WHAT IS THIS? Please and thank you for your help, Team Dramabean(ie)s!

  5. At least this one’s definitely a drama, right?

I’m looking for a drama that I saw several years ago. I just remember bits and pieces of the childhood part. The main boy had this very funny dance that he always did to cheer the girl up. I believe the girl was being abused by her father, and in one scene, he made all this stuff fall onto the father as he and the girl ran away. Please, heeeeeeelp!

  6. Gah! This one’s another drama/movie!

Hi guys! I need help. I’m pretty sure this is a drama, but it could be a movie too.

I remember everyone thought the main guy was gay. One particular scene that stood out to me took place at a hospital. The main guy’s friend’s girlfriend showed up, and the main guy’s friend pretended to be in love with the main guy to try to get rid of the girl. I can’t remember much. I only saw up to that part. But, I would love to see it again! Thanks!

  7. I swear I’m just going through these requests in order, so everyone must’ve been in a movie mood

Does anyone know the name of a drama/movie of a poor girl who is mistreated by her own sister? The girls do not know they are sisters. The poor girl is the secret daughter of a wealthy family and lives a poor life working in a mall. Her sister sabotages her work at the mall and in an office. The poor girl may work designing things. Also, there is a guy who both girls fall in love with.

I remember that they work together at an office, but the girl is mistreated since she is poor. For example, others go to lunch and leave her at the office working by herself. She has friends at the mall, and they prepare a setup for an opening, but it is sabotaged overnight. Her sister regrets mistreating her sister unknowingly toward the end. Also, one of them may have been adopted, or they may have been switched at birth.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for playing, everyone — till next time!

OH WOW YAY you made it so easy! I kept going back to check Name That Drama to see if it was posted, but I actually missed the one where my entry was. I just went back to read through all of them to see if I missed it and there it was -- #4 and it was definitely Project Makeover. I feel so relieved!

THANKS EVERYONE!

#6 miiiiight be Creating Destiny with Eugene and Ki Tae Young? That scene definitely happens in the first couple episodes. And because his family thinks the hero is gay, they aggressively set him up with Eugene's character (who is also getting aggressively set up because she's into boring white dudes and we can't have that lol). It's a fun drama if you don't mind a lot of histrionics.

That white guy was a terrible actor, listening to him speak made me squirm. I watched all of Creating Destiny but couldn't for the life of me remember that the family thought the main guy was gay! How weird. I do remember thinking how bizarre it was that grown women would let their elders tell them who to marry. I've watched a lot of dramas since then from many different asian countries and have discovered that this is a common theme so it seems less weird thinking about CD now.

Yeah... the girl was raped while her boyfriend a.k.a the cameraman was watching and did nothing. There were two adaptations with two different titles if I'm not mistaken, but I forgot what's the titles of the other one. (Or maybe that's a different movie with similar story? LOL)

I agree that it sounds like the MBC TV movie DRAMA FESTIVAL 2014: OLD GOODBYE.

http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Old_Goodbye#Episode_5

Jang Hyuk plays a punch-drunk former boxer who attempts to save the life of his former wife (Jang Na-ra), a photographer who found an unusual Polaroid camera.

I've watched quite a few installments of DRAMA FESTIVAL as well as KBS DRAMA SPECIAL when I've been able to find them with English subtitles.

Another series I've liked is HOMETOWN LEGENDS aka KOREAN GHOST STORIES (2008) -- there's also a second season from 2009 which I haven't seen yet. It's basically 8 mini-sageuks set in Joseon, with dandy veteran actors.

Yes! I too think No. 5 is Baker King Tak gu. Eugene's younger version is continuously abused by her father, but Tak gu cheers her up every time with an adorable song- dance. And in that scene when stuff falls on him, they presume he is dead and runs away.

I am having a hard time remembering things off late. Being diagnosed for so many ailments that I don't even know they existed . At the age of 28!! Anyways! I have scene close to 100 Korean dramas. Many scenes pop up in my mind all of a sudden ( I never had problem finding them before) and nowadays I keep struggling to remember which drama is that from.

For around 2 months I struggled to remember the drama that has a scene where the main actress is approached by someone with a deal that benefits both. ( at first I thought it's about inheritance, no I was wrong ). The offer made by the other party is something the lead girl would have got naturally without the need of a deal but she is unaware and the other party presents the matter as if she is doing a big favour to the lead girl (thankfully the lead is smart enough to think it through). I racked my brain literally for 2 months and I thought I will post it in this section. But then suddenly I remembered what the deal was and it was quick enough after that.

I still have many scenes popping up which I will try my best to find by myself and if I find it difficult I might drop a question soon.

I have a feeling you are up for the challenge. If I get no replies then I will try the Open Thread Section tomorrow.

Many many years ago I saw this movie on tv with my family. It was about a beautiful woman who fell in love with a simple nice guy, she however was a social climber, and while he would have sold his soul for her, she never allowed her heart to get in the way because he would never be able to provide what she really wanted, which was of course status and money.

The movie was basically about how she was smart enough and conniving enough (and as I mentioned, more than beautiful enough) to marry several rich men while carrying on a decades long affair with him. He was always left behind to look at how she achieved everything she wanted, and at some point she married someone so famous that when she gave birth to her twin girls she was profiled in the cover page of most magazines. But no matter what she did to him, if she called he always answered, until he himself found a very good woman that somehow understood that in his heart that other woman was queen and finally he was able to stop the affair.

There must have been another reason why they finally ended the affair, but I can't really remember, but he ended up both loving and resenting her.

The most memorable scene was towards the end, when by some chance he and his wife end up going to a high end dinner where lo and behold there she is in a beautiful emerald dress. They go somewhere to talk and get into a heated discussion and when she turns to go either he accidentally stepped on her dress skirt or took a hold of her dress skirt, or I think she accidentally got stuck somewhere, can't really remember, but the skirt of the dress tore right off leaving her with only the top and showing her beautiful legs in stockings. I remember he just walked away while she worried about what to do and the humiliation she was about to suffer. She however like I said was smart and quick thinking and she tore off the curtain off a window and wrapped it in such a manner that it looked like it was part of the dress (she made quite an impression I might add, with people commenting on her flawless taste lol).

I also remember that while he was standing off somewhere all of a sudden he sees this beautiful young woman enter that looks exactly like his lover did when they were both young, and he becomes absolutely transfixed. Only for her to approach him and finally tell him that the girl he is looking at, that so resembles her, is one of her twin girls, and that they are his daughters. She tells him that the one he is looking at is the one that resembles him in manner, she is quiet and shy and not at all ambitious. She tells him that the other one is every bit the same as her and that she is going to make sure her daughters also go far.

It was a foreign movie I think, but I was so young I can't really say for sure. I hope someone can help me.

Thank you Beanies!

@Agatha:
The movie looks interesting. I'm eager to watch it too.

I'm sorry for putting this one out as I did send this query to db team and I was waiting for this post... but they din't include it in this edition, probably these all were prior to me... someone plzzz help me as my head is about to burst (I'm thinking so hard) but unable to recollect

I'm pretty sure that its a famous drama. The two leads once visit a restaurant with two other friends, the female lead excuses herself for washroom where she comes across a pervert who strips naked in front of her. She's so bewildered that she doesn't react at all first but later she breaks down on the staircase where the male lead confronts her.

I think its pretty easy but I'm just unable to recollect the actors faces.

@ammy are you positive it wasn't reply 1988? that show did start airing in 2015, not as recent as you think :) i did a little googling (really just a very small amount, no more than five minutes worth) looking into that reply 1988 scene and haven't seen anyone mentioning it's similarity to another drama or movie (what you've described is almost that exact scene [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3HJydDsg1A], so i thought if it were similar to something in another show someone mght've mentioned the similarity... but no, not so far)

i am also going to agree and say it is reply 1988.

Ok, thank you guys... its this

I also have non korean movie that i have been searching for. It is chinese but a modern one maybe around the 90's. In the old time with long hair, the main guy and girl were in love but were killed by the second guy who was in love with the girl. They reincarnate and all meet again in the future, but the plot twist is that the second guy is born into the main leads body and the main lead born into the second guys body. I have been looking for it for years but not able to find it.

#5 is definitely Cinderella's sister. The child version of Taecyeon's character was really chubby and always tried to cheer up Moon Geun Young with funny antics/dances. Then when he grew up into Taecyeon, there was one scene where Moon Geun Young's character was really sad over the male lead, and Taecyeon asked her if he, 'can do it again', and started dancing to make her laugh.

Forgot to mention that yeah, he was the son of a man her mother was living with (don't think they were married, and the guy was pretty abusive/not a good person to be with), before mother and daughter ran away and ended up living with Kim Gab Soo/Seo Woo's family. During the scene where they run away, the little boy makes something fall on his father to prevent him from chasing them.

That's a very common scene in kdramas. Off the top of my head, I remember:
- Boys Over Flowers (or was it Heirs?) Lee Min-ho gets fed by the lead girl's mom
- Sassy Girl Chun-hyang, Chun-hyang's mom keeps babying Mong-ryong
- Dream High, Sam-dong's mom visits their dorm and feeds Taecyeon food from her hands

I want to try my luck on asking an American old TV series that I watched probably around 20 -25 years ago. It's been weighing on my mind for many years, and sometimes it drives me nut LOL.

It's a story about a single father with 7 daughters (it might not be 7, but somehow that number stuck on my mind), and they were rich, lived in a big house. It's some kind of a musical (?), because I remember that there were lots of singing. I particularly remember they sang "all I have to do is dream" by Everly Brothers. The story revolves around their daily life I guess, one of the story was about the oldest sister falling in love.

Please anyone help me out of this misery!
