Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 22-28, 2017

There were loads of new premieres this week, and if you can believe it, there’s still more to come! (Where will we find the tiiiiiiime?) It was all about the Monday-Tuesday time slots, with Fight My Way, Lookout, and Circle beginning their respective runs. Out of the Big 3 broadcasters though, Whisper came out on top, and was able to break that coveted 20% mark in its final episode.

Fight My Way managed to beat out Lookout on Tuesday, but the steady drop Lookout experienced is definitely something to keep an eye out for (though it rose marginally in Episode 4, it still declined from its premiere). It’ll be interesting to see how the void that Whisper will be filled, but that’s a conundrum for next week.

Meanwhile, Circle premiered over on tvN in the slot previously occupied by The Liar and His Lover to diminishing numbers, which is beginning to make me think that the time slot it’s in may never bring in the numbers it once used to. Still, no harm in keeping our hopes up, since dramaland can always use a bit more originality and experimentation. (And Yeo Jin-gu.)

As for the middle of the week, Ruler–Master of the Mask came out on top, though it’s not skyrocketing upward. Mystery Queen ended at a very decent 8.3%, just narrowly edging out Suspicious Partner for second. All that’ll change next week, I’m sure—ooooor will it?

I have a feeling youth romcom won't be able to get too high of a rating, best would prob pull a Shopping King Louie and get slightly above 10%. Which is a shame because FMW is a breeze to watch and I hope good words from mouth to mouth will help the ratings. I don't really care about ratings personally but I really like both leads as they are talented so hoping all the best for them! Really happy to see KJW finally gets to be the lead.

My Sassy Girl would be hard to beat though, especially if it goes the Moonlight way judging from the teasers (please don't be like Moon Lover).

Let's hope for that! Because there are many new drama premiering in that time slot, the ratings will not be stable until a few more weeks.

Reporting from the future, it seems for the foreseeable future FMW will be on top in this slot unless a lot more people come back next week for My Sassy Girl. Lookout and Circle aren't contenders really since they didn't really see any substantial increase with Whisper gone like FMW did. And My Sassy Girl dropped noticeably from episodes 1 to 2.
I'm gonna assume now that FMW will stay around 10% like it did this week for most of it's run, which is respectable. I WANT it to hit 15-20% and fingers crossed maybe the increase will be even more next week! But even if it doesn't go up more it's enough to make the studio happy and enough that we might get more of these actors in lead roles in the future.

I think with the slots and current competition it will be hard for SP to break 10%. I'm rooting for Ji Chang Wook and SP but the storyline needs to advance past romcom and gets straight to murder mystery. It should learn from IHYV how to balance the genres (romcom, legal, mystery) better.

When will FIS ever rise above 30%? I love the episodes this week, and how Joong Hee is so proactive in creating memories with Papa Byun by inviting him for a movie and drinking with him. I love how Papa Byun thinks of Joong Hee immediately when he hears of the fans' lunch boxes, and how he makes them for Koong Hee's entire team. He has so much love for Joong Hee. Jun Yong should stop feeling sorry for himself and the lack of love from Papa Byun. He should stop expecting everything to be handed to him on a plate and be more proactive like Joong Hee does.

Jun Young and his wife are super childish, they need to grow up. Yoo Joo is still lowkey bullying MinYoung and acts like an angel at home. I don't feel sorry for Jun Young because of they way he treated Joong Hee in the earlier episodes. He wanted to make him feel separated from the siblings (when they put their money together for parent's day) and acted nasty towards him. Now his siblings and his father are slowly getting closer to Joong Hee and he doesn't like it. He wants to be the only son who gets the attention from his father. He should sit down and think. He knocked up a woman, he doesn't have a job so his parents have to take care of his family and he is the one who criticizes everyone but himself.

Jun Young really irritates me. Like , dude, you've had your father's attention for 30 odd years and haven't done shit but date when you should be studying, knock up your gf and get married with no job. Joong Hee came to a foreign country and has lived alone for the last 10+ years, all the while never having known his father. You would think Jun Young would cut Joong Hee some slack but I'm not really surprised he continues to act like the immature man-child he is.

Yoo Joo better watch it, Hye Young is no joke but when Ra Young finds out what Yoo Joo did ...it's a wrap. All three sisters in law against her?!!! Ohhhh can't wait.

I really liked Circle but I won't be surprised if the ratings aren't a blast. It's the genre, more than anything else.

I wonder if Seven Day Queen's premiere will change Wed/Thurs ranking. Ruler and Suspicious Partner have been maintaining the same numbers for the past couple of weeks. Since both are saeguks, SDQ would be competing directly with Ruler. SP might gain from this.

I was wondering if Ruler could do a MDBC in terms of ratings but the show is nowhere near Moonlight in terms of storytelling and execution. Yoo Seung Ho and Kim So Hyun are definitely capable but it's the writing that failed them.

"CIrcle" is already a success for debuting pass 2%. "Joseon X-files" first episode was around .8%.
The casts made a rating promise if the ratings surpass 3% so they are not expecting it to be a huge hit based on the genre.

I think they'll get their 3%. Go Circle!!!

That is true, they really don't have high expectations. During the presscon, when KKW was asked, he avoided the topic and during the special preview, none of the cast wanted to answer about the ratings so it got passed to An Wooyeon, who then mentioned about the rating pledge they did backstage.

It's not a drama that can entice the general public immediately even if it's on cable (compared to other TVN dramas that have a more mainstream appeal i.e. Answer Me series and Goblin). It can be watched whenever convenient for viewers, but not necessarily something that I would sit down and watch ON A FRIDAY NIGHT.

Required fields are marked *

I agree. It took a few episodes to really get going too and with so much content to consume nowadays, you really need to catch the audience's attention on the very first episode. Also, I think CT's charm is that it does its own thing even if it alienates the audience. See that meta moment in episode 13 when Se Joo's Manager told him of the audience criticism and how he should pick a genre.

I think it's important that the Answer Me Series, Signal, and Goblin are anomalies and not the norm, especially for cable ratings.

The first 2 episodes of Circle weren't quite well-received in Korea. :( They were mostly mocking the CG. Personally, while it is not state of the art, it's good enough for me. I mean they only started filming last April, they obviously didn't have enough time, and probably budget to make it super grand.

Anyway, I just really am wishing for the story to continue to be tight, well-paced and well-written. I'm so happy about the acting so far and I really enjoyed the first 2 episodes, which was a relief.

I'm from PH too and I totally understand what you mean... It's really... sad to look at.

But then again, if Korean dramas are already tight on budget and time, production in Philippines is in a much worse scale. TV networks only care about raking in the bucks, without care for the quality of what they're producing.

3

@weaselking Amen to that!

Reminds me of a silly backdrop of one of my country (Singapore) production. I was lol-ing over the looked-so-fake background of older Singapore (1920s or so). They looked so fake that the two leads (brothers) were in a dialogue at the olden Singapore habour and river. And it was a blockbuster of that year even !! About two or three years back !

I wasn't expecting any good CG. It would be a shame if they shun the show because of the poor CG. This kind of reaction isn't encouraging the industry to do genres which are not usually explored due to limited audience or resources.

I was gripped by the story and acting. Let's hope it continues to deliver.

Exactly. And it's unlikely TVN is gonna invest very high for a genre that isn't well-tested yet. And it really is sad, the PD said during presscon the reception to this series will have a great effect whether more series of its kind would be produced in the future.

And I could tell a lot of hard work has been put into producing this drama... so I'm just gonna enjoy it while it lasts.

I just hope people won't dismiss this show for its CG alone, which obviously isn't perfect. But amazing CG takes a huge amount of budget and time, which this show obviously doesn't have.

That is a surprising criticism to me. There aren't a lot of korean dramas that require CG so I didn't realize that the audience expectation was that high, especially for a tv series.

If the story can focus to the four leads and not only for Dok Man-Ae Ra and the writer can manage to write all 4 leads' stories, it will be a good slice of life drama. So far from the promotions and first two epi, this drama mainly promoted the chemistry /relationship romance between the OTP solely. While the chemistry is great and I love it, I signed up to see the real struggles of common young ppl life in Korea and not the dragging plot such as " I love you more than a friend, but I don't want to lose you if anything happen" something like this, later. Hopefully this drama will be able to tell the real life story. As long as it doesn't turn to another The Time We're Not In Love, maybe it will be fine.

Take Radiant Office for eg. It could be boring for some, but this drama managed to tell us the life story of Eun Ho Won, the friendship between the trio, her working life and her relationship with her officemates and a little romance. For a rookie writer, his/her first drama is considered good and he/she can always improve. At least the idea & style were there.

Ratings in SK do not reflect the feedback here in DB. Take TLAHL for example, it's the most recent that has had a warm reception here. But it didn't pass the 2% mark. Also, JCW's Healer didn't pass 10%, but just look at the comments of the last episode recap - that says a lot about how unreliable the ratings are vs. the reception of the Beanies.

Ratings aren't a good for determining overall viewership and quality, but it is good determinant of how profitable a drama is. SK advertising helps fund dramas. The ratings determine how many eyes an advertising business can attract and that determines advertising rates.

As a fan from the US, I'm unlikely to easily access and support on a regular basis the korean brands of furniture, body wash, towels, dumplings, kimchi fridges, and coffee. Furthermore, I don't see the commercials like live tv viewers, only the PPL.

A low-rated drama can either bankrupt a production company (because there isn't enough advertising money to recoup costs of making the drama) or provide extra money to invest in good dramas. It is a burden to be associated with a drama that makes the production company feel financially burdened or be ultimately bankrupt.

Because advertising is so tied with dramas, being in a high rating drama can mean more endorsement work for the actor, which I hear is a lot more lucrative.

I'm sure the actors/actresses themselves know if their drama was a cult hit or not, despite low ratings. I wish the international audience can learn all the ways in which a low-rated drama is still a success in SK, but just in a different way.

I'm poor at remembering korean names but if I'm not wrong, the two doctors from Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim would be among the lead cast right?

Yes you are right. Yang Se Jong and the girl doctor (I don't remember her name now).

Gosh, I finished watching Chicago Typewriter EP 14 last night and thought it was great. Sad to see that the ratings went down from EP 13.

Slow-burning, contemplative show, but still excellent.

Ahhh man. Just got spoiled. Please be careful about giving away cliffhangers for episodes that just aired. Typically, after the recap for the episode is posted, talking about spoilers anywhere is fair game but, before that, Open Thread is typically the place to discuss episodes explicitly. It's still fine to talk about it here, as long as your comments don't give away important story turns like this.

It went down a lot. But 8pm on a Sat during a nice spring evening. I can't blame people for wanting to be out and about with friends instead.

Whisper and Mystery Queen you will be missed :(
For the Monday-Tuesday time slot I'd put my money on My Sassy Girl to get first place
Do you guys think Ruler will hold onto the top spot? I've read some not so great things about the show on other sites and the open thread?

At one point, I thought Ruler will hit 20% without much problem. Then it started to stagnate. Of course, it's still early days and the drama might suddenly pick up steam again and hit new highs.

Regardless of how the show turns out, I think it will not drop too much below its current ratings, if at all. This means SP or SDQ have to surpass it. That's no easy feat. I am not watching SP and I am guessing it isn't really the kind of show which would jump in ratings after the 3rd week. SDQ hasn't aired so it's anyone's guess.

The problem with SP - the chemistry is very great. But the plot is not compelling enough to draw the viewers. But if I may compare, this drama is better so far compared to SWDBS. I am not that happy to say this, but I love Eun Bong Hee much more than Do Bong Soon (I love both actresses respectively). But SWDBS did much better in rating. Maybe because there was a lot of buzz for SWDBS.

Ruler - main problem so far the writer doesn't know what he/she wants to write. There is no focus in his/her writing. The main reason why Moonlights was a rating success last year because the writer clearly had the focus and managed to draw the viewers with it. Let's see what SDQ will bring us. It could turn into Ruler or maybe will be better. One thing for sure, both drama have the same plot - tragic love story between the main leads. Maybe SDQ can execute this plot better than Ruler.

SWDBS did come with Park Bo Young, who is a super popular film actress that doesn't do dramas often, and it also came with Park Hyung Shik right after he captured everyone's attention in Hwarang. And it did come with a more interesting premise (though I felt like the execution was really bad).

Maybe SP's ratings will go up now that MQ has ended. I feel like they would attract a similar audience. Great lead chemistry. Mysteries! SP is my crack, but I do admit that MQ does seem a little more fun.

I've been reading the recaps to Ruler and I also got the sense of a lack of focus, but I do think the issue of tackling the water bureau is very intriguing.

I doubt Park Bo Young is a super popular film actress, if you compare her with other established actressess in her group. She is indeed yes don't do drama that often. But i believe Koreans love her. And Park Hyun Sik - like you said gain most attention after Hwarang.

MQ has every potential to become sleeper hit following Chief Kim if the plot was better. Still the number they got are not bad and some drama didn't even managed to get it.

Ruler -I don't know what story they want to tell to the audiences. The water bureau is interesting plot and it will be great if the writer can develop from there. From now water bureau + mask king + tragic story between the leads - I just don't really connected with any of it. The promos seem wanted to sell tragic love story like Romeo & Juliet but will viewers actually get it? So many sageuk but so repetitive & poor execution- if you want to sell the romance story, just make it right.

I do think there's a chance Ruler will lose its lead if Seven Day Queen generates lots of positive buzz in k-media and SNS in its opening week. Ruler is the leader in its timeslot but it's not the runaway hit Chief Kim (this year's W/Th smash hit) was. It's already its third week and ratings still remain in the low teens. A strong competitor could eventually knock them out of the top spot.

That said, there's every chance that SDQ won't make much of an impact in the ratings since (as pointed out in the above comments) the leads aren't exactly ratings draws.

As for the M/T dramas, Sassy Girl does look like it will take the top spot at least in its opening week, but SBS has a terrible track record with pre-produced sageuks (Moon Lovers, Saimdang). The leads are good actors. I hope the people behind the camera are up to snuff.

Wow ratings for CT decreased by almost 1% from Friday to Saturday?! Both eps were so good though... It's so sad that the show is ending next week and the ratings are still low :( I hope the ending ties the story together nicely, whether it be happy or sad.

i'm rooting for Chicago Typewriter, Circle and Ruler master of mask.
however, for circle, it's quite confusing to arrange the storyline..although it is sooo mysterious and i need to re-watch it to fully understand the drama at the beginning.. hahahhaa.. adding to that, especially when you have yeo jin goo in it, i'm in..!

This post was not very visible on the front page (normal view) even on the day it came out.

There are lots of good dramas out but the ratings seem lower on average. I hope this doesn't encourage Korean TV networks to only pump out certain kind of shows from now on *sigh*

This is very sad to see the ratings for CT went down to 1% for the latest episode. I really think the storyline is fresh and nice. True, the pace is slow but the story is good. And I feel the actings were good too. Seo Hui Young is so cool~ And I like how they keep Shin Yul in suits because KGP looks damn good with his height and long legs. **Swoon**

I am slowly giving up on Man to Man, i watched for all the gentlemen and I actually fast forwarded the romance scenes.. urgh..

SP is getting slow for me too. I might give up if the story didn't hook me this week. =(

Ruler, haha~ I told my friend (who highly recommended to me and said she didn't even blink during the first 4 episodes) that the drama is too dramatic. And after the 5th episode, she finally get what i meant. Well, even though it is dramatic but I wanna give a big round of applause to all the young but not young actors and actresses on a job well done. I think Joseon stories cannot run very far from each other but so far, I think Ruler still has potential. 1 vote from me! Every votes count!

Definitely my dear. When will we find the time to see them? I think there's a surge of interesting dramas recently. I really looking forward to Chicago Typewriter, Fight For My Way, The Best Hit & one with Do JIhan (I came across it really briefly, so I don't know whether it's new or rerun of old drama).
