Premiere Watch: Return

Return

Time slot: Wednesday & Thursday
Broadcaster: SBS
Genre: Legal mystery thriller
Episode count: 32 (half-hour episodes, 16 hours total)

Reasons to watch: The main reason to check out this drama is for A-list actress Go Hyun-jung, who is headlining the legal thriller as an attorney defending a chaebol in a scandalous high society murder trial. It’s a mystery with four suspects—wealthy friends who are all trying to keep various skeletons in closets—and the lawyer and cop who are determined to dig those skeletons up. The cast includes Lee Jin-wook, Park Ki-woong, and Shin Sung-rok, so I do expect it to be well-acted all around.

I can’t say I’m dying to catch another legal thriller when there have been so many in dramaland lately, but maybe the whodunit aspect of the plot will make it stand out from the pack, or Go Hyun-jung’s character will. She’s playing a lawyer who came up from nothing, and was once a judge who lost her position for reasons she still doesn’t understand. She opens her own practice and becomes the MC of a legal television show that’s a smash hit, effectively making her the most famous and sought after legal counsel in the country.

Because the drama comes from a new writer, there’s not a lot to go on other than PD Joo Dong-min of Take Care of Us, Captain and Birth Secret, and the hope that Go Hyun-jung wouldn’t waste her time with a bad script. She’s too good to be wasted on a mediocre drama, ya hear me?

Could you please explain what you mean by ”almost all big names were originally part of Samsung group”?

all big names as in all the big business houses in korea.. just google her ex husband .. the biggest departmental stores, CJ e&m is entertainment and media giant, we know electronics is big worldwide.. so many businesses

Only lotte and hyundai are some of the international brands who don't find their origin in samsung...

and come to think of it.. samsung head.. and recently lotte head got convicted..

Corruption in korea has got to be amongst the worst then.. and i thought my country was bad!.. but the good thing is here we are so not dependent on govt.. that nobody can really control us..

unlike the whole chaebol concept in korea..

ofcourse west seems the best in terms of enforcing law

Go Hyun-jung earned her place in the entertainment industry before she married into that family. They had nothing to do with her popularity. Her marriage did the opposite to her acting career.
She stopped doing what she was well known for until she divorced her ex-husband. She returned to television so her kids can at least see her in her dramas.

Yes, she was originally cast to play Queen Seon-deok (the lead) but she was more interested in playing Mishil. I think they should have called the show "Mishil" instead. She was front, back and centre of QSD.

No one would ever dare to make another drama with Mishil as the main character or remake of QSD because she is irreplacable.

Looking at her story made us also wonder if the chaebol's story as in the drama is similar to reality. I just hope she still can visit her kids.

I believe Go Hyun-jung was the first and only Mishil because I don't think anyone did a sageuk before based on the controversial Hwarang Segi. The only record where Mishil's name is mentioned.
There is also a novel named Mishil written by Kim Byeol-ah in 2005.
I think the writers were using both for the drama.

IIRC she wasn't and she is still not allowed to see her kids. She was banned from everything that's owned by her ex and Samsung too I think because she is the face of LG Electronics the competitor for Samsung.

Her life would make a compelling book or drama, just heartbreaking.

I was very angry when the first time I read her story. What kind of human deny a mother from her own children? And why korea judicial system allowed that to happen? Her ex is totally an ass. I'm glad she keep rising as an actor.

I might be wrong, but I think this writer is known for her crime documentaries or legal documentaries that have won her several awards. This drama is really high on the list of possible hits this year because this is her first foray into scripted tv, but this scripted tv show is supposed to have all of the unknown secrets of the legal and crime solving world from all her years as a documentary filmaker.

Or I might be confusing this one with another thriller that is about to come out.

I have had enough of these legal dramas!!! SBS is losing its creativity (in fact all the 3 major broadcasting stations are imo) SBS has released 3 legal dramas in a row in the same time slot: WYWS,Nothing to lose and now Return.
Well, regardless of the plot, I'm done...

After Because its my first life and Forest of Secrets, I'm excited to get another new writer in dramaland! It will be interesting to see how this story plays out based as we have nothing much to go on right now.

@silvermists

So with you there. After 2 episodes, you can tell its a different writer's voice...the drama's pacing is lively and unexpected.

I'm going to watch this drama for the casts alone. If you can get Go Hyun-jung, at the very least it will be decent.

Would have stopped reading at Park Ki-woong because I have been waiting for him to do a drama I could watch since he got discharged from the army, but add Shin Sung-rok and I am counting the hours :-)

Is this a remake of an American movie "THE LOFT", I swear the plot is so similar. In the loft, there are five friends who share a penthouse loft where they can carry out hidden affairs and indulge in their deepest fantasies. But then one day they discovered the dead body of one of their friend's mistress in the loft, and they realize one of the group must be involved so all of them conspired to hide it. Preview of episode 3 shows the same thing will happen.

That does sounds like a remake of "The Loft". Yikes. I hope it's not plagiarism and that it's a remake. I'm really liking the Kdrama. I'm excited for next week.

While this isn’t fated to be a favorite of all time, I’m enjoying it. It does seem a little racy by Korean standards...

8 episodes in and GHJ has yet to wow me. Her character for now is nothing special, well, maybe later she will kill in court. She is a lawyer afterall, for now, can't remember much but hair flips from her, lol.

What? A list actress? How could? What's so good with her? I even never heard her name before. And by the way, her face looks so unnatural, seems too many filler here, plastic surgery, and very look like Moon geun young, lol

I don't know why people compliment go hyun jung so much, because i see nothing special about her, either phisically or her acting. Instead, it is really boring when seeing her part of this drama. It seems that she want to look cool and amazing but I see nothing, only expressionless act.
