[Traveling the world with dramas] The more you see, the more you want to go

Woohoo Waikiki

By @ohhaeyoung

I enjoy traveling but I’m not yet all that well traveled. I always figured that my first trip overseas would be to Europe before any other continent. However, last year I took my first trip away from the Americas and it ended up being to Asia, specifically South Korea.

My affection for K-dramas began in the summer of 2015 and less than two years later I found myself on a plane leaving on the long flight across the Pacific to South Korea. My flight was much more comfortable than I expected it to be and our in-flight entertainment system was loaded with an overwhelming number of movies and TV shows.

There was only one K-drama available on the flight, funny enough, and it was W-Two Worlds with Lee Jong-seok, which I had already live-watched when it aired in 2016 so that I could keep up with all the girlfriday recaps and Beanie comments as the show took its crazy twists and turns. I opted to watch a drama that I had been putting off instead. The mega popular Descendants of the Sun was my choice of drama to binge on my flight. I was nervous on the flight because I did not speak the language and this was my first time visiting a country that does not predominantly speak either of the two languages I speak fluently. Once I landed, I was relieved that Korea really is as modern as it appears onscreen. Many times I didn’t feel much difference from being in the U.S. other than when I’d step into the streets and see Hangul signs everywhere.

W–Two Worlds

What led me to South Korea, you may ask? It’s not necessarily that K-dramas heavily feature Seoul tourist spots, but more that they show a way of life that was foreign and new compared to the way I lived. Yet core human values shone through in this format of storytelling, which was addictive to watch and compelling to my emotions and senses. After a solid year of watching K-dramas, I wanted to see Korea for myself.

I was already attracted to Korea because of the amazing cosmetics industry that Korea boasts with premium skincare products, and the trendsetting that sheet masks and BB cream and cushion compacts were doing to the beauty community worldwide. I wanted to taste the foods for myself — the kimbap, the ddukbokki, the fried chicken, the jajangmyun, and whatever other street foods would call my attention as I made my way through the streets of Seoul. And then there were all the K-drama locations that I was excited to see, such as the Namsan Tower cable cars because of Boys Before Flowers, the Han river swan boats because of Lie to Me, the palaces from the sageuks, and Jeju because it was the island destination for dramaland citizens.

Lie to Me

Part of the appeal for me was also the love of cute things in Korean culture. Cutesie things have had my attention since I was very young and although I’m in my mid-twenties now, that is still a major part of my personality. I will always remember buying myself a pig-rabbit doll from a vendor in Myeongdong because yes, You’re Beautiful is in my top favorite K-drama list. I was enchanted by the cuteness even from serious places such as banks that handed me my cash in an envelope with blue bees illustrated on it. Even a speakeasy in Gangnam that I visited was Alice in Wonderland themed. I somehow didn’t get around to trying my hand at one of those crane machines that are heavily featured in K-dramas — the ones that every chaebol trying to impress his Candy heroine relentlessly spends his time at, in order to win her heart through stuffed animal.

After coming home from South Korea, I have a building desire to return there. Watching the Winter Olympics this year made me miss my time there. I got into K-pop in April and would like to return to enjoy my K-pop fandom in the closest way possible. There’s still more foods that I want to try. There’s spots in Jeju that I didn’t get to see and explore. There’s also more to Korea than just Seoul and I would like to get to know the countryside more. Maybe next time I go I’ll purchase a K-pop global package trip… Who knows, maybe I’ll meet the love of my life on such a trip the way that Jung Yong-hwa’s character did in the endearing K-drama The Package. I was visiting because of expectations I had seen onscreen and was ready to see the reality of Korea for myself. I encountered many kind Korean people, successfully visited many sites I was interested in seeing, and yet the trip felt so short, so I returned with a “to be continued” mindset about Korea.

Yes you'll be fine traveling there! I don't really speak Korean...just recommend learning some basic phrases and highly encourage you to learn to read hangul (it is actually simple to learn) because it was useful to sound out words to find places I was looking to visit sometimes! Obviously the more Korean you speak the better, but when in doubt I would try to find a young person and politely ask if they spoke english whenever I needed help.

💖💖 I loved how you ventured onto finish a drama you never did on a plane, visited numerous places in a new country and had a foodie adventure. That's one productive vacation! @ohhaeyoung

haha yes I was struggling to get through Descendants of the Sun so I figured on a long flight was the best place to sit through it...I didn't end up really liking it but I did enjoy the secondary couple storyline...

also a foodie adventure is definitely what I had, I kid you not...i gained like 10 lbs on this vacation, oops!

I can relate so much with your post! Last year I was in Korea for the first time (I visited my boyfriend who works there, so I didn't travel alone). We travelled a lot and visited a lot of different places, not only in Seoul but also in the south of Korea. And since then I really want to go for a second time to do all the stuff I didn't know about the first time there.
First on the list would probably be to visit an EXO concert♡ But as fast as they are sold out this probably won't be easy even if I am in Seoul then...
Thanks for the lovely post @ohhaeyoung!

Ok first of all I'm an EXO-L too! I've chatted online with EXO-Ls who go to concerts and they tell me buying from stubhub or certified reseller sites is pretty much what you have to do to be able to get your hands on a ticket. Also I'm interested in trying out those global packages that SM sells, but the only thing that sucks is the short notice for the ticket sales. They're currently selling one to go see CBX next weekend...but the sale just went live today so kinda ridiculous but maybe one day it'll work out for me

And oh nice! I didn't travel alone either, I actually went with the friend who got me into kdramas! :D but that's wonderful that you got to travel with someone who kind of already knew how to get around...I wish to see more of Korea outside of Seoul next time, what places do you recommend seeing? Also I totally relate with you on learning more about places I missed out on visiting the first time I was there such as the SM building, I was just not into kpop when I visited last May...aish

Thank you for the compliment :)

It's so nice to meet a fellow EXO-L here!! :) SM and short notice - tell me about it! It's the same with the comebacks, I don't get why they only give a two weeks prior notice. Anyway, maybe we will meet each other k-drama-fate-like at a concert someday :D

As for places out of Seoul: Personally, I really loved Busan. It's also a big city (even though not nearly as big as Seoul) but it felt kind of warm and friendly. The Koreans in general were kind and helpful, but in Busan even more. I just liked the atmosphere there.
If you are into history, Gyeongju is also worth a visit. And if you like temples or historical buildings, I can recommend Bulguksa. It's a very beautiful temple near Gyeongju.
Very interesting is also the DMZ, but maybe for me as German more than for others :)
On my next trip I want to visit the southwest of Korea. Unfortunately we didn't have the time to go there last time.

I've only been into kpop since April with the EXO-CBX Blooming Days mini-album being the first kpop album I've ever purchased. I was so impressed with them so that led me to check out EXO themselves and they creeped their way into my heart ;) who is your bias? Mine is Kai! Since I haven't been into kpop for that long, I'm still not familiar with the patterns of the kpop industry so I'm excited for the upcoming EXO comeback! Ah yes that would be so cool to meet a fellow EXO-L that I met online at a concert! I have like one friend IRL who likes kpop. Buuuut I have found online evidence that EXO had a concert in my city back in 2016 so maybe they'll come back to my city sometime on their next US tour. It would be a dream to see them in Seoul though :D

Seoul felt a bit overwhelming after a few days for me...it is so big city! So Busan sounds wonderful! I met a lot of kind people in Seoul but the people that stand out the most in my memory for their kindness were the people I met at Jeju I guess since it's so relaxed there! I'll make sure to stop by Busan next time I'm in Korea! I am into history so I'll add those places you mentioned to my list as well. Also I'm so sad that I did not get to the DMZ after I returned. For some reason I didn't think much of it when I was there in Korea but when I got back a few months later I was wondering "why didn't I go to the DMZ?" :/ so yes that is on my list of destinations for next time.
Hope you're able to enjoy a Korea trip again soon!!

I listen to kpop for some time now, at first mostly to the older groups like 2PM (especially Junho!), TVXQ, Super Junior etc. I knew about EXO but it felt kind of weird to fangirl over younger boys (I'm only a few weeks older than Xiumin but still :)) And I hated all the fan wars between EXO-Ls and Armys so I didn't want to checkout one of those groups. But then I watched Busted because of Park Min Young, Lee Kwang Soo and Yoo Jae Suk and ended up falling for Sehun... That's how it started :) I watched more and more of their variety shows, live shows and listened more to their music and now I don't know, how I could ignore them for so long. :) I can't really decide who my bias is, I love all of them. I think it's Sehun, since he is the one who got me into EXO. But then there is Chen, who has such a soothing voice and always seems so considerate, Suho, who takes on such huge responsibilities for the boys, Kai with his charismatic performances who turns into a shy and lovable kid offstage... I'm sorry, I could go on and on :) The bottom line is I love all of them :)
How come you purchased Blooming Days by EXO-CBX? Or was it simply by chance? And do you also watch their variety shows? I confess, I tend to watch a lot of their variety/reality shows when I like a group. Somehow, I appreciate the music even more, if I have the feeling that I know the artist.

Oh nice, yeah I never really loved any kpop group until EXO! I only have 2 EXO members that are older than me...Suho by a few months and Xiumin so I get what you mean about fangirling over younger guys as I was a bit hesitant at first too. Wow that's interesting that you were lured in by the maknae first! I have not watched Busted or any variety shows really other than the Climb the Ladder with CBX series (I'm about 30 eps in so almost done!) and I have seen clips of variety shows such as It's Dangerous Beyond the Blankets for Xiumin. I spend a lot of time now watching live performances and interviews of EXO so I know what you mean about wanting to have the feeling of knowing the artist. I'm sad that I wasn't enjoying their music before too...if only I had been a fan when they visited my city two years ago!

I feel like EXO-Ls cannot help but love every member! I feel it too!! Kai is the first member of EXO that I ever noticed so that's why I feel like he is my bias...I was won over by his amazing dancing and good looks too of course! But I'm also heavily attracted to Baekhyun (his voice is heavenly and he is adorable in so many ways) and Chanyeol (his tone of voice is beautiful and I love his personality). I'm still learning more about Suho and Sehun but they are all wonderful and so talented.

And oh sorry I meant to say that I purchased a "Blooming Days" physical album copy this month but I have been in love with "Blooming Days" since it came out back in April. What I mean is I have now recently in the past 2 months started to buy EXO merch. :D

I'm sorry, I should have checked your answer sooner...
I just wanted to let you know: there is an amazing EXO-L on tumblr, who links all the EXO videos with english subtitles on her site. I'm not on tumblr, but her website is open for everyone and if you want to know more about EXO, her links save you a lot of time searching for videos. So, maybe you want to check it out :)

Thank you @ohhaeyoung for a lovely essay! I really love how you explain our attraction to Korea and kdramas; it is the core human values that draw us in!
I am impressed with your travelling mojo, and wish you many more adventures!
