As a follow up to this week’s Caption This pizza debate, what was the worst food theme/placement in a k-drama? My choice would be WOK OF LOVE. The story centers on Lee Joon-Ho being an expert Chinese chef who opens a restaurant across from the luxury hotel that he left. What does a gourmet chef and his staff do after work is over? Head over to the Subway! If you are a talented cook with a restaurant full of tasty ingredients . . . would that make more sense to make your own meals? (Note: this was the peak of Subway’s PPL in k-dramas).

I remember them specifically mentioning that after working the whole day in a hot kitchen sometimes one needs a sandwich, and another time saying it is great to eat food you haven't made yourself, and another time saying sometimes one craves fast food instead of the greasy spicy chinese food.
Actually I thought it was very well placed. But to be fair I have never eaten subway so I don't have the negative reaction most beanies have to it.
To me the good thing about a ppl like subway is that they don't keep zooming onto the food itself. That is what I usually find irritating and distracting. Like the pizza in You Are My Spring, which not only was very unappetizing with the heaping topping, but they kept zooming on it and talking about its merits.

Then there was the Papa John’s Pizza ppl in SUSPICIOUS PARTNER (2017). Iirc JCW’s stepmother was a manger of a Papa John’s and there were a number of scenes at her shop with characters munching away.

I'm so in love with Young Woo and Junho in Extraordinary Attorney Woo!!! I'm not even worried about the second half of the drama in terms of secrets and eventual truths coming to light. For me it's always been one step ahead of the curve and whilst it might not be a perfect show it definitely handles it's themes with care.

I'm gonna put all my chips in and say this is my fave of the year and one for the recommend list!

Who's with me?

Thankful for relatives who have gardens and like to share :) Picked over 150 ears of corn last weekend from my uncle's garden. Took 5 days to shuck, trim, de-silk, and cut off the cob (working around my job and cooking meals and all that other stuff that still has to be done). Started canning last night and I 'spect I'll be canning all weekend. Probably got enough corn to last 3 years LOL. But I'm very grateful!

Garden?! Sounds like a farm what a wonderful resource in these times of isolation and increasing food bills to grow your own especially if you go the full organic range of fruit, veg and herbs. I know a few people rejoicing in their allotments and gardens these days. We get to benefit at work as they bring in the excess.

I would LOVE to have a place to have my own garden, but my yard is a slope and would take major terracing to make it work. Even so, I've been slowly carving out spots to grow things. Finally got an asparagus bed started last year and I'm making plans for a few fall garden items. I'm in the deep south, only a couple hours north of the Gulf of Mexico, so we can truly garden almost year-round.

An apocalypse survival manual states that to be completely self sufficient, each person needs about a quarter of an acre to grow crop/vegetables/fruit. Not quite large enough to be a farm. Could qualify as a garden in an estate.

A study, from maybe a decade ago, said that the cost to plant a vegetable garden was about 4 times that of the cost of buying the same produce from grocery stores. I would say growing herbs is probably cheaper than buying them.

My CSA plants peas on the farm but doesn't give them to members because harvesting is too labor intensive. Members are welcome to go to the farm and harvest the peas. It's not worth the more than 4 hrs drive roundtrip for me.

An uncle, by marriage, whom I had never met, operated a farm as a side business. My cousins warned me not to visit his family because I'd be put to work on the farm like they did. Rumor had it that he was also pretty strict with portion control for meals. The thought of not having enough to eat after working on the farm all day...

Using relatives as unpaid labour🥺 How can a farm ever be considered a side business?!

I agree that it is the labour costs, time and effort that makes it expensive. Some farms make it ‘fun’ so families go to pick strawberries and pay for what they take home.

The reason people bring them in is because they have small plots and get so much they can’t eat it themselves so it’s give away or use it as fertiliser to stop it going completely to waste.

The apple trees in my aunt’s garden made apple crumble for multiple families and the best apple juice. I didn’t know cloudy was normal apple juice until then. I have the world’s most expensive juicer and to make one glass of juice takes so much fruit it’s ridiculous but the taste…. When I live in the Caribbean and can pick the fruit from the garden then it will be a joy.

I'm sure he had regular or semi-regular farm staff. Relatives were simply extra help when "available".

When I said "business", I'm not the farm ever made a profit. He seemed to do it more for philosophical reasons.

1

I think the cost of a garden really depends what you grow and how you grow it. Eg I don’t generally plant carrots because we use heaps so it would take up heaps of space and they’re cheap to buy, but I do grow pumpkins because they’re easy, the seeds are free from the last pumpkin you had, and they store really well.

Few people make that kind of analysis of what they will grow. Most years tomatoes do not do that well in my area- not enough sun and heat. But they try anyway. But raspberries thrive here. And they are among the most expensive things you can buy at the store. You can freeze them, can them, make delicious jam- and have all that you could ever want or need out of a fairly modest garden.

2

@oldawyer We grew tomatoes with varying outcomes. Same went for winter squashes (although I've never liked them), planted by squirrels. Cucumber beetles and/or something else kept chewing off fertilized flowers. I've never been patient and persistent at fighting pests so we no longer plant veggies or any plant that needs regular maintenance.

We have raspberries. A neighbor threw some seeds a couple decades ago. They didn't take hold on his side. Grew on our side then spread to our other neighbors. Because we are also not fans of seedy fruits, wildlife can have them.

1

Wonder what was included in that cost analysis. If you consider the cost of time and labor, then I would definitely agree - see corn for a prime example LOL. But there's nothing like the taste of veggies just picked that day.

I grew up with my parents growing a garden almost every year and helped my mom can and freeze what we harvested, but it was what I'd call a traditional garden. Tomatoes, squash, corn, radishes, turnips, etc. My mindset is a bit different. My focus is perennials like asparagus and artichokes (which are pretty expensive compared to other veggies), and things I can't get locally like Asian veggies and kolrabi.

I also have an interest in native and medicinal herbs, so I'm steadily adding more of those to my yard.

Whole Foods in my area sell kohlrabi. My CSA also grows it. I have two giant ones in the fridge right now.

I bought a $4 USD bag of sweet basil from the CSA. The quantity was probably worth $30-$40 if buying from a store.

I know it's a PEB drama and she's phenomenal and needed that well deserved recognition but I'm also really happy for KTO. I've wanted him to get this recognition for so long because he was always a good actor who never got the spotlight even if he was in good shows or good rated ones. But here we are. Also there are 4 other korean shows ranking in top 5 in my region. So it's awesome how people have tried different genres and even live airing shows in kdramaland.

it's 31 but humidity is 85% continuous. Daily clouds travel and then move. All the rain for not too far places. daily little drizzle.
Rain is alright as i consider it clean water - not the 1st 15 minutes and gift of mother earth. It's 2022 and i have made big loud broadcast that things will change but the start of the week i did the oh ho that i even was a bit surprised.

Monday morning 1:15 am i drank 1 litre of milk with 500ml of water - liquid for the month of july rule and after that around 800ml water each day. body fat burn increased even more inner heat.

today morning 10:00 am i drank 1 litre of milk and water and 100g butter. It was complete foolishness to go for 4 days straight with 800ml of water.

Good - busy in work had not much time to think over hunger

-ve - mother suffered. got angry at me. had only lunch on Thursday n didn't have dinner as i didn't have and lot more.I really felt bad for her but here when we go with rules then we are always ready to put our life on line. What can be done when we see goals and objectives more precious and when our life doesn't matter. That's the future for us.

Child suffers then parents suffers too.

Only if there was no water - not even 800ml each day - it could have turned out to be quite an entertainment. only for me - not the ones who care about me.

That's how real life is - intentionally or unintentionally you do hurt others.

That's what i have seen a bit too much in human world. Child the future of everyone turn out to be a point to control the parents aka wide level of society. These children are the future workers n voters. if you can have them then your regime can stand for a long long time. Most important factor becomes ideology and the social environment developed, build, amplified and improved - takes lot of efforts n time but outcome aka returns are too good to miss.

Without physical violence you can aim and win and get all brownie points from all sides. Well, that's how facemasks play.
I find it way too boring.
If everything is under your control then where the opposition gonna come from. keep life interesting and entertaining by keeping life uncertain.

I have some favorite dramas that I like to go back to and watch at times. But with all the fragmentation and competition around streaming services, dramas seem to come and go. And just how many streaming services do I need to subscribe to! The illegal sites are beginning to look more and more promising to me (at least they have all the titles in one place along with all the viruses and ads). So, I decided to check the library, and to my surprise, I found a library not far from me in a small town that happens to have a collection of Korean drams! (the librarian is a fan!). How do other people handle watching older dramas and keeping them available to watch from time to time?

I think I'm cursed. Everytime beanies are active I'm not, and whenever I'm active other beanies aren't.
Everytime there's a popular drama everyone is posting about I can't open the site because I'm afraid of spoilers. I'm ALWAYS late to the party.

Today I started Woo's EP9 and I was like "why is this dude kidnapping kids to film Dead Poets Society?" Then I opened the site and saw like a million of posts about a kiss.

Why can't I ever watch the popular shows on time? Why am I always behind? It's so annoying. I watched 2521 like a month late, I dropped Business Proposal, I have Link on hold... Maybe I should just embrace the spoilers. It's 100% my fault (or maybe it's dramaland's fault for airing those shows when I'm in the mood for something else...? Nope, it isn't Tabong 😂).

Anyway, how are you Beanies? Did you liked this week? I'm loving it.
Have a nice day/night everyone! ^^

Thanks! And don't worry. My mood changes all the time so we'll probably be running errands together soon.

1

@enriquequierecagar I won’t be going anywhere any time soon and the errand list is long! Very few of my current watches are live dramas so my activity levels have gone down significantly at the worst possible time 🙁
I have a new batch of ‘made for me’ otherwise known as Goldilocks dramas about to start in the next 2 months so I am hoping we will have some lively chat sections although my genre is highly unlikely to match the chat in the Alchemy or Woo recaps.
The one I am most intrigued with is Little women as the change of era and culture is going to be an interesting one. The characters of the women were fairly universal so hopefully that will be the theme they keep. Jo is the one that fits modern times, as despite the radical changes over time feminism is still needed as a force for change.

1

Same! Little Women is going to be interesting. I've watched two movies (2019, 1994) so I'm really curious how this version is it going to be. The cast is awesome and a making it a tv show means that all the sisters will be able to have their story told properly. So exciting! I guess we'll be chatting about it ^^

1

@enriquequierecagar we will definitely be chatting about that one.

I saw someone changed out their background picture on their fan wall because of a drama image that had to be captured. The only way I can upgrade mine is when I get my next standout drama of the year so hopefully that will be the one that earns that title. I hope that by putting so much on it I am not setting myself up to fail.
The only film version I saw is the the 1949 version. When I was a child they had all the old films on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and that was my idea of bliss if I wasn’t reading.

0

From 1 to 10, I'm having a 5 expectations about it? After Yu Mi's Cells 2 I'm having issues with dramas and high expectations 🤣 I think it's better if they surprise us.

I love that version. It's so warm and beautiful. 😊

This is why I say we should ask for a spoiler tag or whatever that's called which hides spoilers here. People who want to see discussions for a particular show can while others avoid the spoilers.
Tbh I don't mind spoilers mostly and if we only access the recaps then they are hidden well but the fan wall is certainly a place with lots of spoilers because for some shows we really want to spazz about immediately. The hidden spoilers would suit everyone i guess.

Same.
With 2521 it didn't bother me so much because I didn't know anything about the show.
I didn't know the characters or the story which means I wasn't going to remember anything, the weren't real spoilers. I saw like a million gifs about the show, but when I watched it, every scene felt new.

But with EA Woo it's different. I'm watching the show right now, so everything feels like a big spoiler.

Happy weekend Beanies and keep Beaning On!

My family and I got the hopeful news that grandmother might be able to leave the hospital next week! She is sad and regretful to leave her beloved place, but she is surprisingly understanding and cooperative. Grandfather will move from his current single room to another double room in the retirement home where grandmother will join him. The stay is temporarily until we find something better, but having them together will already take away a lot of the stress and hassle the family dealt with until now.

Selfcare has been a challenge, but I started my daily walks around the block again. I lacked the energy after not feeling well both physically and mentally the last few weeks. Monday is the start of a new month. I hope August will be better!

@songxrising: I feel for you. When I used to live in Manhattan, the summers were a horror. I hated waiting for and getting on the subway in summer with a passion. I enjoyed living in Manhattan and the cornucopia that it offered during the summer months (eg. Shakespeare in the Park!) but seeing the rats on the tracks, the smells (coming from both the garbage and sometimes from pongy men) and the heat were awful. The first thing I needed to do after getting home each day was to have a cleansing shower.

ohhh EEEUUUU.... i remember being in NYC one hot humid july summer looking at grad schools... after going down the piss entrenched subway stairs and then getting back to where i was staying, i could smell all that stuck to my skin/arms/everywhere... BLEAH!!! had to shower so often, it was gross.

Ugh that sounds awful. It’s winter here so it is just relentlessly damp - not overly cold but rainy rainy rainy. Still, I’ll take it over sweltering and stench.

For me it’s the greyness that often comes with rain that I can’t handle. I hate being cold but sitting in a warm house or car seeing trees lined with frost and the blue sunny sky is a joy to behold.

My house is not that warm 😅 but yeah definitely the grey is what gets me down. A nice clear winter’s day is lovely.

for EAW fans, the tree that featured in Ep 7&8 is now being reviewed for designation as a Natural Heritage. I'm very curious to know the behind the scenes story about this, maybe the writer grew up around there?

I’m here to announce the 3rd annual Beanie Pandemic playlist. Lots of old and new groups had comebacks this year. And a ton are touring or headlining right now (Seventeen, G-idle, Jackson Wang, J-hope and TXT —lollapalooza!). So next weekend starting when the Open Thread opens until Monday 12 am wherever you are! Just put your songs up on the fanwall and I’ll collect them and put them on a playlist on YouTube and Spotify! :) ❤️💜💛🧡💙🖤

I'm excited about IU's The Golden Tour, she's the first ever female k-pop star to perform at Jamsil Arena. Another milestone added to her belt.

Great idea! Can I assume that anything released during the pandemic is fair game?

Cue 300 beanies posting "That That." 😆

Anything you want really. I like to keep it mainly kpop and Korean, but there have been other languages and genres as well!

I have several beanie playlists if you want to listen. It starts with the Beanie island party in 2018. Then we had wedding playlists
for @mindy’s fake wedding, @azzo1’s real wedding, and then every year since. I try to put one together when I’m on vacation.

I love that, friendships formed on this site lead to a playlist for someone’s wedding 🥰.

Hopefully, you will get there soon. It seems to be feast or famine sometimes, in terms of the releases but it will probably balance out soon.

Hey guys, here's another K-drama concept I came up with.

Title: Show me how to feel
Genre: A slice of life, Melodrama, romance
Starring: Lee Do-hyun (Youth of May), Han So-hee (My Name), Lee Jeong-eun "Psychiatric specialist" (Our Blues)

A young soldier's life is changed forever as he suffers a shot to the head while in combat. Barely surviving, the doctors weren't able to remove the lodged bullet from his frontal lobe and due to this, his ability to feel emotion and/or express it is compromised.. After being medically discharged from the army, his commander, who's been like a father figure to him, referred him to a Psychiatric specialist who does her best to help him adapt to his new way of living.. During one of his sessions, a female patient barges into the room having an emotional breakdown. Feeling embarrassed that she interrupted someone else’s session, she offers to repay him by buying him dinner… They say that First impressions are important, to the young soldier, the woman is a hot-headed emotional wreck. To the woman, the young soldier is nothing but cold-hearted but despite their flaws, they decide to help one another on their emotional(ess) journey called life….

I would watch this. But with a different female lead because I find Han So Hee irritating for some reason 😅 I’m not sure why - I feel mean saying it!

That's exactly why Han Sohee will convey that irritation quite perfectly 😅...and you'll actually see the character growth for what it is - growth, and not just writing.

Lol yep exactly, I want him to mellow her out and for her to help him convey what he wants to feel and teach him how to express it even if he can't feel anything. That's where the romance/drama comes in lol

Jejeje no worries at all, everyone's opinion is welcomed!! She can be quite irritating but I think she can portray the character very well.

Flower Crew: Joseon Marriage Agency is my cup of tea, thought it was on Netflix - it is not.
Poong, the Joseon Psychiatrist is new not on Netflix though. Strangely enough Vincenzo and Tomorrow were both available on Netflix Australia straight away and screened twice weekly.
Who decides which ones to show?

Second matter, I find I am getting logged out when clicking on the links at the top of the page, not everything but many -e.g. News or Recaps.

Do you have problems all the time or now and again? The site is really temperamental for me too if I click on notification for a like or a reply it will sometimes take me to a random spot on the page like the actual recap so I have to start again. Sometimes I am reading or replying to a comment and it takes me to the last place I clicked on. I almost started writing a comment on the wrong page because of this. I had to log in and out several times one day last week.

I don’t know if it’s related to the device or just how things are on the day but I have had some really bad days and others not so bad.

It is consistently slow uploading pages. That’s why I wish more people would subscribe or make one off donations so the money can go towards whatever is needed to sort the lag issues out.

I definitely have some days that are worse than others for loading speed. I subscribe (I have the bean toggled off) because I use mobile 90% of the time and you can barely see through the ads 😅
