If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2

Ji Chang-wook is back in a lovely healing drama from KBS about a lost ex-convict who joins a team of hospice workers that grants final wishes to dying patients. I love a good healing drama, and the premiere week gave me just what I was hoping for. It’s got a warm, slice-of-life vibe and a strong cast of characters at its core. I’m already looking forward to the found family bonding and touching human stories in the coming weeks.

If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2

Given Ji Chang-wook’s recent drama history, I was a little trepidatious for this premiere despite loving the premise. Thankfully, this one is shaping up to be a keeper. Healing dramas are great when done well, and I think a lot depends on the vibe and not overdoing the sentimentally. If You Wish Upon Me gave me the right amount of likable and empathetic characters, human stories, and warmth. It made me want to grab a cup of tea and stare at the sunset.

We’re first introduced to YOON GYEO-RE (Ji Chang-wook) as he’s released from prison. He’s got tats and scars and his eyes tell you he’s seen things. Despite his tough exterior, it quickly becomes obvious that he’s a softie underneath.

If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2

Life has hardened Gyeo-re and taught him to depend on no one but himself. Gyeo-re ran away from his abusive father as a child and took himself to an orphanage where he spent the remainder of his childhood. He comes across as a loner, but he does have at least one trustworthy friend from the orphanage, veterinarian JIN-GU (Park Se-joon).

But Gyeo-re’s true bestie is his little dog Son who he rescued and is now unfortunately terminally ill. Yes, Gyeo-re named his dog “son,” and it’s adorable. While Gyeo-re pretends to care about nothing, he dotes endlessly on his dog, carrying him with him everywhere and belting his little carrier into the car seat.

If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2

Next up is Team Genie, our group of dedicated hospice workers and volunteers who work to grant final wishes to dying patients. Perhaps the most central member is volunteer KANG TAE-SHIK (Sung Dong-il) who now lives at Woori Hospice Care but used to live on the streets. He appears to be the ringleader here, although he’s not even staff.

And we can’t forget our leading lady SEO YEON-JU (Sooyoung), a hospice nurse with a love of exercising. She’s sincere and straightforward with a temper, but she’s also known for being somewhat oblivious. Everyone at the hospice knows DOCTOR YANG (Shin Joo-hwan) has a crush on her, but she cluelessly laughs off the idea.

Not all the staff are fond of Team Genie, though. Their dedication to granting patients’ wishes often leads to the bending of rules, putting everyone in a difficult position. Doctor Yang had been helping them, but he bows out due to the ethical conundrum it puts him in.

If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2 If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2

So then, how does our lovable ne’er-do-well end up crossing paths with Team Genie? Gyeo-re causes a car crash while trying to outrun his gangster hyung JANG SEOK-JUN (Nam Tae-hoon). As soon as Gyeo-re got out of prison, they came after him for supposedly stealing money. Although Gyeo-re claims he delivered the money as promised, the stacks of cash at his disposal lead me to believe the gangsters on this one.

Back to the accident, Gyeo-re’s reckless driving leads Tae-shik to injure his foot and prevents him from driving. Determined to get his patient to his seaside hometown before he passes, Tae-shik coopts Gyeo-re to drive their ambulance. He refuses at first but then realizes it’ll help him get away from Seok-jun, so off to the sea they go.

While Team Genie fulfills their patient’s wish, Gyeo-re sits alone on the beach. With nowhere to go and no one to miss him, Gyeo-re doesn’t see a reason to live and walks into the ocean with Son. Tae-shik sees and pulls him back, using the excuse that he should take responsibility for inuring him in the crash.

If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2 If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2

In the course of all this, Tae-shik realizes he knows Gyeo-re. In a flashback, we see Tae-shik being strangled by Gyeo-re’s father. Tae-shik sees little Gyeo-re nearby, heavily bruised and with a noticeable burn scar. In present day, Tae-shik sees that same scar. I’m already looking forward to the bonding between grumpy Gyeo-re, who secretly wants to be loved, and the empathetic Tae-shik.

Tae-shik takes advantage of Gyeo-re’s situation and convinces the judge to have Gyeo-re complete his community service hours at Woori Hospice Care. Gyeo-re doesn’t exactly make a great impression on his first day with his cavalier attitude, his tattoos, and his gangster suit. Oh, and the fact that he practically bowls over Yeon-ju and another staff member with his fancy sports car on his way in.

Bad first impressions aside, the staff still treat him well and try to include him, but Gyeo-re keeps his distance. He’s painfully unused to family-like settings and won’t even join them for dinner, which he so clearly is desperate to do.

If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2

The hospice may have gotten more than they bargained for with rough-around-the-edges Gyeo-re. He grumbles about everything from the uncool car he has to drive for Tae-shik to the food to whatever else annoys him. But his soft spot for desperate people and those in need soon betrays him.

His first mission with Team Genie is to help a dying elderly man get permission to spend his final days in his beloved family home. The family currently living there are about to move since the wife lost a lot of their money in poor stock decisions, but after some convincing, they take Tae-shik up his offer and stay elsewhere for a week.

If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2

Gyeo-re tries to keep up his tough guy facade, but can’t stop the tears when the elderly dying man takes his hand and thanks him for helping. He then spends all night crafting persimmons to hang on the man’s favorite tree outside so he can see them in the morning. Needless to say, Yeon-ju softens toward him after witnessing this and overhearing that he tried to commit suicide.

Although Gyeo-re pretends he’s decided to stay with the hospice because Son is comfortable there, he’s clearly getting some much needed warmth from Team Genie himself. When he returns to the hospice to get some of the elderly man’s things, he spots a mysteriously locked door. We end with Tae-shik ominously telling him to stay out of that room.

If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2 If You Wish Upon Me: Episodes 1-2

I really enjoyed the first two episodes and liked the balance between the overarching story and the individual stories of the patients being granted their final wish. Although we have our main characters, it is more of an ensemble drama which is nice. The cast was a draw for me, and they didn’t disappoint.

I’m looking forward to watching Tae-shik take the endearingly grumpy yet harmless Gyeo-re under his wing. I’m curious about Tae-shik’s history with Gyeo-re’s father. Was the father a loan shark or enforcer of some kind? Tae-shik’s homeless friends were relieved that “someone” hadn’t visited Tae-shik in a while, and I’m guessing that could be Gyeo-re’s father.

Gyeo-re is in desperate need of some bonding, and I can’t wait for him to grumble his way into this little hospice family. He’s clearly a great fit for Team Genie, and I don’t think they’ll let him stay off to the side staring longingly at their family dinners for long.

@quirkycase thank you for the weecap. Yes this definitely draws you in to wondering how things will work out. I am worried that vulnerable people will get caught in the cross fire if the gangsters turn up at the Hospice.

This is going to be interesting because we can see how all the team have their own reasons to want to be a conduit to bring about other people’s happiness in their last days. We know the supervisor and Gyeorye are connected but I don’t think he’s his dad, but potentially a relative that would have been a carer if his own issues had not got in the way. Maybe his guilt about losing that opportunity has led him to be so kind now.
I am interested to see the types of wish fulfilment they offer as the needs are so different especially now we see the different ages of the residents. I was surprised to see a young woman in a room with older men if it had to be a mixed ward which is surprising in itself surely she is not the only young person in there.

When the FL kicked the side view mirror and it fell off, I said to myself, "Ahh, this is the beginning of a beautiful enemies to lovers story line" Sooyoungshi 😍, Hweighting 💪🏽

I hope with moving forward they are able to tackle 1 or 2 wishes per episode and not drag some out longer than they should. I'm preparing my heart for the water works each story will have me shedding.. Still hope some of the acting from ML gets a bit better though, i'm not quite sold on him yet but I have a feeling he will get better throughout each episode.. *Fingers crossed* 🤞🏽

Thank you, @quirkycase, you captured this very well. These episodes were very warm, even though there was violence, threats of more violence, a suicide attempt, homelessness, and ever-present death. I felt like a lot of the warmth emanated from Sung Dong-il, even when his character was reading the riot act to Gyeo-re. I'm happy Ji Chang-wook finally found a role in a drama worth watching.

Stodgy Dr. Yang will never win his lady by putting his principles first. She is going to fall for the reluctant volunteer as he puts more and more of his heart into making dying wishes come true.

So true. And that is the reason why I wanted to watch this show. I am excited for what it comes

I like the overall vibe of the show, and surely this isn’t the last we’ve seen of the family that lost their money to a stock collapse (day trading?). I’m not so much a fan of what’s clearly going to be a very violent gangster arc.

And while I like the ethical questions about whether what Team Genie is doing is best, let’s not have any more disobeying of DNRs. The man had floated off imagining a blue sky, and at that point resuscitating him is only for the sake of the volunteers - totally wrong focus. That and if you do chest compressions on an elderly patient, there is absolutely no way you just continue on to a peaceful seaside hillock; you’ve just fractured a bunch of his ribs and he’ll be in pain.

Lastly and logistically: how the hell are they coordinating with a patient’s death?! Decline can help you guesstimate, but unless you’re withdrawing care or assisting with an overdose, it’s not predictable enough to time things. Hmmm.

Exactly my thoughts, they had been given a week max for him to be around and as you said he was already dying when they brought him back. I have heard of people holding out until a relative arrives at the bedside but he was choosing to go before they reached his chosen destination.

I found these 2 episodes and the introduction of the characters kinda messy. There were a lot of them with the team.

The One and Only took place in a hospice too and was disapointing. It's hard to find the balance between the sadness and the happiness/hope in this kind of story.

I'm not a fan of the main characters for now.

The team took bad decisions to take this old man at home. His death in the ambulance was enough.

Give to Octogenarians and the 90s (Cdrama) a chance, it's very sweet and sincere.

Hum... I don't really watch Cdrama, I have issue with the dubbing, and 39 episodes for this kind of story seems too much.

Terminally ill or dying animals in dramas affect me even more than dying people. Maybe because I have often been faced with the decision to put my animal out of its misery.
I already know that I will cry my eyes out when the little dog dies.

Thank you for the recap @quirkycase!

Already had to do a double take when our ML coming out of prison was just a regular criminal and not a lawyer turn mafia boss out for blood (the latest run of vengeful lawyer shows had me believing the latter was the norm 😂). But jokes aside, I’m reeled in hook, line and sinker after our premiere week! JCW plays tortured and depressed so well, just the expressions in his eyes had me tearing up several times and overall the show kind of reminds me of a more mature/and darker version of the movie Up - not exactly in terms of plot similarities, but in terms of themes and the feeling I got watching. Which is a fancy way of saying I cried heaps already (I especially lost it at the persimmon tree bit at the end).

I’m a sucker for a caring dog dad though, and it’s clear YGR is just a really lost and sad kid underneath all the thorns and armour he wears to protect himself which makes his character one you want root for to find happiness. And Son! I am so so attached to that little dog, my heart was in my throat every time he looked a bit more worn down and sad - if/when something happens to him on screen, I don’t know how I'll deal with that.

Despite the inevitable pain and heart ache this show is going to give me based on the subject matter, I’m in for the ride (armed with a box of tissues ofc). These types of shows, as sad as they are, also really help bring to focus the fact that the beauty of life lies in the fact that it’s not forever - and it helps press a pause button on the hectic hustle and bustle of day to day routines to really look around and cherish the present.

I hope the writing stays strong for this show, and that it’s a hit for JCW after his last run of questionable drama choices!! Fighting!!

"JCW plays tortured and depressed so well...". Yes, I have a feeling that he's going to succeed here because this character is not a million miles from his Healer character - abandoned, alone, chip-on-shoulder, healing-to-be-done, absolute team player when he's found the team he trusts. Many of his other characters have required him to do something different, and, with all respect to JCW, he's missed the mark. Returning to territory where he has proven success was a smart move.

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the first 2 episodes. I don't think I will continue. On the bright side, Wookie seems to have found his groove again.
I found the whole set up idealistic. The character introduction (Everyone is happy and smiling), the cheerfulness of the people working etc.. Also, Death is not something we plan or make it happen the way we want. The first case of a smiling old man, going all the way to the wife's memorial and dying peacefully felt too far-fetched for me. Personally, having seen many old people and two terminally ill people die, death was nothing like this. Nothing goes the way you think.
And most of them don't even know what happens in the last few days.
I would have much preferred the last wish happening well before their time is coming (when they still have their senses) rather than the 'exact' last moment, which makes is very hard for me to believe.
May be its the first cases and they want to show the perfect execution, and later episodes will show how they fail. But for now, its a drop for me.
Gosh, I was so looking forward to this.

Ji Chang-wook, welcome back. You are so expressively emotion laden: your cynicism, your vulnerability, your emptiness, your inner child, desperate for love. When the old man thanked Gyeo-re for taking him to the house and held his hand: such a simple act of gratitude, and this starved man burst into tears. The dam broke. A dying man had it in him, in his final moments, to say, thank you, and all the hurt, rejection, and bitterness crumbled. This is what I love about kdramas. They show the transformative gift of a life line that turns a person around.

Kudos too to Sung Dong-il. Amazing actor who is in so much. I really love his character in this. He's strong and determined and quietly observant.

Seo Yeong-ju's kicking off the side mirror was just plain stupid. I look forward to Sooyoung turning her into someone more interesting.

Sure dying is not as clean cut as this. These are sanitised deaths. Dying is a horrible, breathless struggle out of this world, unless you are really lucky and you just drop dead on the spot. I don't want to see anything approaching that in dramas. I've seen enough irl.

I started to watch this drama because I liked the teasers, and gosh when was the last time I watched a Ji Chang-Wook drama? I don't know, but he is good in this one, I'm impressed, though I'm actually watching it for the plot, aka the "Son". His eyes are just so cute and that dog is so lovely, I can cry watching him!
I have high hopes for this drama, I hope they give us a good story, not a cringy one, I was actually so excited after watching the first episode that I was thinking if you guys didn't want to post its recaps I'm going to free some schedule and do it myself, it's just too good to ignore. :D
Thanks for the recap! ^_^

I love that you were stepping up to provide a service for the community to do a weekly recap if this had become one of the drama hangout candidates.

I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts as the story progresses. Do you have any theories about any of the characters yet or are you going to wait and see what plays out?

I am keen to know more about the 2nd FL. She’s young and beautiful and her demeanour is more suitable for JCW. I am guessing that she’s dead already in this story and she’s only living in the memory of Gyeo Rye. And that would make it more poignant for Gyeo Rye to struggle with his loneliness. We have to wait and see what’s going to unfold. I feel sad already thinking how Gyeo Rye is missing her.

Agreed, I think they were supposed to commit suicide and die together and he got scared and left. He feels guilt that he didn’t make her leave with him or that he should have stayed as she was right there was no joy or hope in the life he lived after her death.

I saw on YouTube, they were doing a group interview and JCW was saying that they tried to film a scene late at night and both of them were riding on his bike and it was freezing cold and his hands were shaking, so I am guessing that she could have died in an accident...

1

I'm just hoping she hadn't survived but ended up with some serious burns, I don't think that's where the show is going, but, well now we have a room which is locked and we don't know what's(or who's) inside and I like to let my imagination run wild! :D

That’s true he might be mourning her loss when she didn't actually die. Maybe as he was in prison he didn't hear about whether there was a funeral or not but assumed it had happened and as she had no relatives he didn’t have anyone to ask. He planned to die so didn't think about it so now he is staying alive he could start looking for her to pay his respects and find out she is alive but as you said scarred.

My theory with the room is it’s a rich person who has authorised personnel only accessing the room. How the dog found the room who knows. Son has gone from having no energy to being up and about since entering the hospice. I wonder if it will turn out to be his previous owners who didn't abandon him but lost him or he was left when they were hospitalised and found wandering the streets. No one could find him to return to the original owner as Gyeorye had taken him by then and soon after he was with the vet…
Looking forward to hearing the answers to these questions and more.😊

1

My bad 🤗...Ha Joon-kyung is still very much alive and is in prison...

I saw on YouTube that it seems Gyeo Rye is avoiding her🤔.

Episode 3 is kinda slow...but it’s ok...I just keep ogling at the gorgeous handsome looking Gyeo Rye..

1

That’s weird the way he avoided the question when the vet friend asked about her and the scene of the fire I thought she did die.

1

I think I can't help but have theories, but at the same time, I'm totally ok with being wrong. For instance,Tae-Shik obviously has some connection to Gyeo-Re, but then we saw him with homeless brothers, so I'm not sure what that connection is, at first I thought maybe he used to be like Tae-Shik until he became a changed man, but I don't know. Right now, I'm mostly curious about the woman who caused the fire, tbh. :D

Why does JCW seem to breathe too heavily in some scenes where no physical effort is needed? I've been noticing that in him for some time. It makes it feel like he is really miserable inside that even breathing is hard, which doesn't really make sense, does it!?

@quirkycase was it mentioned that the ML ran away from abusive dad? The kid had blood stain on his face and Tae Shik was being strangled by someone, but I don't remember the ML or Tae Shik mentioning it. Maybe, I missed a scene or the translations were wrong.
