Today’s Webtoon: Episodes 5-6

In the webtoon field, aspiring artists and passionate producers alike have lofty dreams. However, it takes more than just optimism and hard work to achieve success, and it’s all too easy to fall into disillusionment or overwork.

“Today’s

We resume in the midst of the heated confrontation at the webtoon camp. Thankfully, before Dae-ryuk can do anything rash, Ma-eum instinctively twists the aggressive bully’s raised arm. He falls to the floor, clutching his wrist and screaming in pain like a giant wimp.

His buddy accuses Ma-eum of hurting a webtoon artist’s precious hand, but Joon-young rightfully points out that the bully misused his hand first to hurt other people. Ji-hyung and Man-cheol arrive to defuse the situation, and they send the injured artist to the hospital (along with his buddy and Joon-young).

“Today’s

Unfortunately, news spreads fast, especially since the other artists filmed and uploaded the whole debacle on their social media accounts. Worried that her actions may have hurt a person and ruined Neon’s reputation, Ma-eum ends up heading to the hospital too.

Except Joon-young assuages her fears with a video he took of the bully waving his perfectly-fine hand around as his buddy gloats over his acting skills. LOL, way to expose your own scam.

“Today’s

Back at the webtoon camp, the judges evaluate the budding artists’ pitches. Dae-ryuk’s art is met with a tepid response, until Writer Baek points out his instinctive eye for good staging and composition. With a little guidance, he could improve his art skills — and he’s willing to offer that help. Aww, Writer Baek!

Unfortunately, Dae-ryuk turns down the position of Writer Baek’s assistant, leaving it to Ma-eum to persuade him. She tells him that she wants to be the first reader of his webtoon, and her earnest faith in him touches his heart.

The final winners of the webtoon camp are selected, ranging from the former baseball player LEE WOO-JIN (Jang Sung-yoon), to the soft-spoken GU SEUL-AH (Jeon Hye-yeon).

Dae-ryuk doesn’t get chosen, but he receives an encouraging text from Ma-eum with a link to a webtoon. She quotes a line from it — just one person is enough to save someone from collapsing — and tells him that she’d be happy to be that one person for him.

Dae-ryuk’s moved by her sincerity, and that’s the final push he needs to accept the position of Writer Baek’s assistant. Yay!

Aw, Dae-ryuk is a bundle of nerves on his first day. Head assistant IM DONG-HEE (Baek Seok-kwang) kindly lends Dae-ryuk a tablet to replace his old and scuffed one, and assigns him his first task of practicing how to draw circles freehand.

Dae-ryuk can’t differentiate people’s faces well, so Ma-eum goes the extra mile. She gets Joon-young to take photos of her making different facial expressions and wearing various outfits, so that Dae-ryuk can have reference images. HAHAHA omg, she makes Joon-young do it too, and before long they’re laughing their hearts out and having fun.

Fellow rookie writer Seul-ah has her first feedback session with Ma-eum, and the mood is optimistic at first. However, Seul-ah’s spirits are soon dimmed by the long list of constructive criticism from the staff and readers alike.

Nasty supervisor KWON YOUNG-BAE (Yang Hyun-min) tries to poach Seul-ah for a big illustration project, guilt-tripping Ma-eum into letting her go. Disheartened by the amount of revisions she’ll have to make for her own webtoon, she accepts the prestigious project, which entails drawing a webtoon adaptation of a popular web novel.

Barely a few days before the deadline, however, Young-bae suddenly demands for Seul-ah to change the appearance of the protagonist entirely. Young-bae dismisses Seul-ah’s concerns as if it’s merely a five-minute edit, when in reality she has to redraw the majority of her work from scratch.

“Today’s

Ma-eum learns about this, as well as Young-bae’s notorious reputation of being a “rookie killer” — artists who work with him usually end up quitting or getting ruined after just one job. Ma-eum frets so much that Joon-young takes notice, and the pair move to the rooftop for a breather.

Joon-young points out that she has a tendency to get too emotionally invested in the artists she works with, and that it could end up hurting her in the long run. Ma-eum acknowledges this, but she can’t stand how Young-bae treats his artists like they’re disposable commodities.

Even when Seul-ah ends up in the hospital from overwork, Young-bae doesn’t display even a single shred of remorse. He and Ma-eum end up arguing during a team meeting, and Ji-hyung invites Ma-eum out for a drink so they can talk through her concerns.

Joon-young asks to tag along, and he explains that he’s done his research — Ji-hyung has to be lenient on Young-bae, because the artists under him make up the majority of the webtoon team’s sales. Ji-hyung concurs, and to the rookies’ surprise, he says that Young-bae used to be as diligent and down-to-earth as Ma-eum.

Back in the day, the current members of the Neon webtoon team used to be a startup called Gingertoon, and they all poured their passion into their work. However, Chief Heo’s coldhearted shutdown of Gingertoon had left Young-bae in shambles and led to his divorce. Since then, Young-bae’s taken a much more pragmatic approach to his job.

“Today’s

Somberly, Ji-hyung reveals that Young-bae focuses on sales and performance numbers, so that the other webtoon producers can invest their time and resources into projects they’re passionate about. Without his harsh, hard-headed approach, their platform would go under due to the lack of revenue.

I like that Young-bae’s nastiness isn’t just for the sake of the character archetype; instead, his harsh attitude is humanized, and we can see how he’s making sacrifices for the team too. His wholehearted emotional investment made the crash back down to reality that much harder, and it’s a cautionary tale of how Ma-eum could end up if she doesn’t manage her emotions and avoid burning out.

Still, a sad backstory doesn’t excuse Young-bae’s mean behavior, nor does it warrant him forcing Seul-ah to overwork herself to the point of hospitalization. I do understand Ji-hyung and Man-cheol’s hesitance to take him to task, since he is keeping the team afloat, but I wish they’d step in when he takes things too far.

Thankfully, Seul-ah stands up for herself and rejects Young-bae’s next illustration offer. Pushing herself to the brink of utter exhaustion served as a wake-up call, and she tells him that she doesn’t want to end up hating her work and herself too. She would rather slowly improve and tell her own story, even if it takes much longer to debut as a webtoon author.

This week, we also learn the true reason for Ma-eum’s judo hiatus. It isn’t her injury, which both us and her father have been led to believe.

We flash back to her last judo competition. With only 15 seconds left on the clock, Ma-eum knew that she had to make a decisive move. Noticing that her opponent was favoring one leg over the other, Ma-eum struck out at her weak ankle to flip her over.

It earned Ma-eum the victory, but it left her opponent clutching her foot in agony while being carried out on a stretcher. The realization that she’d hurt someone with her own actions had deeply traumatized Ma-eum, leaving her scared to return to the sport.

“Today’s “Today’s

Ma-eum invites her father to the dojo for a sparring match, and it’s almost like a swan song. Afterwards, she admits that she’s gotten a job, catching her father entirely off guard.

He accuses Ma-eum of giving up on judo, but she corrects him — she’s not running away, she’s making a choice for herself. Ma-eum once cherished her dream of becoming an Olympic gold medalist, but she has a new dream now.

Pointing out that they’re two very different people, Ma-eum tells him that this is her life to experience, to learn from, and to take responsibility for. Gosh, I love how the dialogue in this show is written — it’s so raw and genuine, the words alone make me tear up.

On that note, I’m really enjoying the recurring role reversals written for this pairing. Not only does the show poke fun at how much stronger Ma-eum is compared to Joon-young, but they also give Joon-young all the fluttery moments characteristic of a typical rom-com female lead.

For example, Ma-eum pulls Joon-young out of the way of an oncoming motorcycle, leading to an accidental hug. Joon-young’s super flustered, and he asks Ma-eum if she’s okay — but it’s clear he’s referring to more than just being injury-free, because he clutches his beating heart after she turns away. HAHAHA, awww.

“Today’s “Today’s

I love our rookie pair so much, and how good of an influence they are on each other. Ma-eum’s kindness and tenacity inspire Joon-young to regain a little faith in the world, and Joon-young’s perceptiveness teaches Ma-eum how to be a little more sensitive to other people’s feelings.

Their conversation about still having much to learn about the world was particularly poignant, and it’s nice that they have each other’s backs on this journey. It’s clear they both carry baggage; Ma-eum’s still trying to find an identity outside of judo, and we keep seeing glimpses of a mysterious lady in Joon-young’s house who seems to hover around him like a specter.

Still, I have faith that they’ll grow and heal, and it’s why I’m so fond of this pair — they may feel discouraged by their own shortcomings, but they notice each other’s strengths. They motivate each other to keep going, and with a little guidance from Ji-hyung, I’m sure they’ll go far.

Thank you for a great review @solstices! Do I spy with my little eye the hint of a LOVELINE (or TWO??)?? I was giggling like a school child when Jihyung was bamboozled by the idea that they’re might be something going on between Maeum and Junyoung and then squealed when we had the reversal of the usual ‘pulling someone out of the way’ trope and a flustered ML rather than FL. My conflict as to which one of the MLs I like better has intensified.

Okay but putting that all on the back burner (it’s taking an almighty effort to, but at this rate I’m going to look like I only care about romantic pairings in dramas and nothing else hahahaha) - I’m really loving this show for the kind of themes it’s tackling:

💜 Personal growth: Maeum is bright, chipper and a hardworker but she isn’t without flaws (just like the rest of us) and she’s been challenged considerably over the past few episodes. There have been times when she’s had to learn how to believe in herself more and also times where she’s been asked to reconsider her perspective and methods. What I like especially is the illustration of the fact that ‘personal growth’ isn’t linear nor does it come at the cost of sacrificing everything about yourself. There are times when Maeum taken on adapting to other ways of thinking and times when she’s drawn the line between understanding but not necessarily agreeing (like in the situation with Kwon PD). Likewise, when she’s feeling doubtful or unsure, it’s not a case of ‘get’s a pep talk, feels better forever’ situation - she’ll get up, trip & fall again and then get up again and keep going. And its lovely that she’s got a growing support system around her that will help her get back on her feet again every time!

💜 Entering the workforce: it’s really damn hard sometimes, and I appreciate that we’re shown that even the most confident or smart have their own insecurities and versions of imposter syndrome about whether they really can do the job/are qualified to/whether this is the right place for them to be.

💜 Changing dreams: reminds me (yet again) of School 2017, in a particular scene where a teacher asks ex- idol trainee student, who’s all sad and lost because he was either kicked out or dropped out, why we should limit our selves to thinking we can only dream once in our lifetimes. I think in the same vein, Maeum is a really good example of that idea that we can have more than one dream/one passion in life and that leaving a dream behind to pursue another doesn’t mean you’re quitting, have become a failure or that your life is over.

💜 Family: having to muster up the courage to tell your parent/s that your dream isn’t exactly in line with their dreams for you is really hard and that scene between Maeum and her dad was particularly poignant. It’s hard to convince them sometimes that, despite their best intentions, all you really need is their belief in you and the fact that you’re capable of setting your own course now. It’s a really tough...

continued: ... conversation to have, especially to mentally prepare for it in the first place and even worse when you understand that it’s going to cause some inevitable hurt for the other party but it’s just something that needs to be done sometimes.

💜 Idealism vs Pragmatism: with Kwon PD, I’m glad they’re not making him into a two dimensional antagonist. I don’t condone his methodology of working artists till exhaustion or anything, but giving him a slightly more complex backstory and bringing up conflicts between idealism vs pragmatism and the question over self-actualisation at work is really interesting. Many beanies already noted that while Kwon PD playing the bad guy allows the others to explore what they want to, the fact that he has a ‘work-life’ balance is at the expense of the artists he manages, which just highlights that this isn’t a simple black-white issue (although you can definitely say that working an artist till she ends up in hospital is definitely not ethical or something that should be encouraged). I appreciate that they didn’t take the easy route of just making him the typical unlikable work sunbae here though, nor did they make him completely likeable or 100% understandable. Interested to see where it goes from here.

On that last point also, this is sort of the exploration of character that I’d hoped for the other Kwon on our TVs atm (Kwon Minwoo from EAW) but…

Anyways, I just really like this show!! It’s nothing new or special but it’s just so damn charming and earnest that you can’t help getting attached 😍 I can't wait till the weekend rolls around again and in the mean time I'll have my head buried in the half a dozen webtoons I started reading because of this show!

This is an awesome writeup. I will say for the lovelines, that it is legit hilarious that she doesn't at all think of either of them romantically. She just wants to do well at her job. I kind of don't want her to have a loveline, I want her to to focus on herself.

thank you 😊! and I agree too that it's nice (and refreshing) that she's more focused on doing well at the moment. I'm mainly projecting onto her the fact that I like the MLs as they are right now hahaha but I do hope that if they do commit to going down the romance route, that it's not at the expense of her focus on her personal growth and career aspirations etc.!!

I am so glad a theme was looking at things from different people's perspectives. That tou can't always look at your way of doing things as the only way. That doesn't excuse the jerk producer being a jerk though, I understand why he is different, but you can reject with compassion.

I caught up this show over the weekend (and I'm dropping it apropos of nothing).

But the way this episode dealt with this character was the reason I did decide to drop.

I was moderately okay with them examining how this broken, burnt out shell of an employee became the way he is. I was much less okay with them then excusing that behaviour. It is not okay for somebody who is burnt out to deliberately set out to burn out others in the guise of "having the courage to be the bad guy".

He is a bad manager, a bad mentor and a poor producer.
I was struggling with the episode a lot because of the sympathetic back story but then having the final scene being him being thanked... um, no.

We quite literally saw him deliberately and systematically burn out a new talent and fail to mentor his new employee while clocking out on time because of "work life balance". And then get thanked.
It was actually awful.

Anybody this burned out should take leave or move to a different job. They should not stay and try to make company for their misery.

SAME. Yelling at the screen. If he’s great at business development, fine. Find the project and the artist and sync with the drama and line up the contracts. THEN HAND THEM OFF. No more artist-facing activities for you, you cancer! I was infuriated the entire time because he’s got some pretty readily identifiable flaws that will only respond to top-down management and Ji-hyung and Man-cheol aren’t doing a damn thing. They’re letting this one guy poison team dynamics, burn out new talent and be unbelievably evil to interns. It made me lose respect for both of them AND I still hate the jerk coworker.

Weak leadership and a strong, malicious team member is a recipe for disaster, and it makes me nervous that she show doesn’t seem to understand that’s what just happened.

I'm late because my frustration with the attitude of "ends justify the means" made me put off watching. Who knows how many talented artists they lost who could be money makers because they tolerated/thanked Kwon Young-Bae's bad behavior? I don't like high conflict dramas, so I may also drop.

I liked the analogy of the artist going for a PD change as an emotional rejection akin to relationship break up and the need to see this as something that happens but doesn’t always have to be permanent shift. I am glad we are seeing more support and guidance for Maeum in her role as it’s a disservice to her and her artists if she is left to wing it unnecessarily.

I am glad that she finally got her dad up to speed and we saw why he was so determined to get her back in the game. I hope that he can work through his loss of his dream of gaining an Olympic medal through Maeum and can enjoy his daughter for who she is becoming in her new role. This theme of parents supporting their grown children in the scary world of jobs with uncertain futures was played out more than once. It was also good to see the growth of Daelyug and the important role of mentors like Eojin for mentees of all ages and stages of career.

I think the random sightings of the mystery woman (sticking with my concept of older sister) lurking unspeaking in the background need an explanation now. Especially as it looks like someone is an alcoholic (as I said before elsewhere on the site, it would be so easy to appear normal whilst being a functioning alcoholic in a culture where being able to handle drinking consistently is a badge of honour). She always looks well dressed and put together whatever the time of day and the fact that the house is massive and has help I wonder why it was so messy when he got home.

Does he talk about the person he misses as the person she used to be before she became a wreck due to some trauma like her husband or child dying and is he living at her house to make sure she stays alive but struggles to cope with her on bad days so ignores her if he knows she has been drinking to avoid an argument? It does not make more sense to have neither of them talking when they are in the same room. It’s not a fantasy drama so why would we see a ghost appearing. If his sister is dead and her ‘ghost’ is his thinking about her presence at the house with him why aren’t his parents also showing up as ghosts too unless he was too young when they died to remember them?

Is the alcoholic some other relative who is rarely in the house so he practically lives alone so that’s why he started to clear up then stopped and distracted himself to avoid being upset and decides to leave it for the help to sort in the morning?

I am really keen to know how there is enough income to sustain staff and running costs of that home despite the absence of anyone else in the house and his intern status.

Does anyone know if the webtoon Maeum sent to encourage Daelyug is a real Webtoon? It looked really sweet and I would like to read it, if it’s translated. I am wondering if they mention it in the credits, can anyone who can read Korean help me out please.

I want to see how they address the issue of the silent observer. I think they will do it like they do with some previews where they show a clip and it gives one impression and then when you watch the episode and they show the unedited full scene it has a completely different angle. I think the clips we have seen is them before or after they have had a conversation and maybe how she looks changes to match the state of the house.

Him looking at the made bed is probably a clue too like it’s a sign she was up and about and not dealing with a hangover.

Re: the webtoon, it is indeed a real webtoon, it's called Middle School Girl A/Student A. I had watched the movie adaption (with EXO's Suho) some years back, but had never looked for the webtoon (even though I had liked the movie). Interestingly seeing Ma Eum sending him this quote has made me more interested in reading the webtoon, though I don't know if it's available in English anywhere.

Thanks, I found a KBS special called Middle school student A and it was one that I had seen before so I rewatched it. But on Asian wiki there is the one you mentioned which I can’t find streaming on Viki or Netflix.
The original webtoon doesn’t seem to be in English.

I too wonder why an office drama would insert a fantasy character like a ghost. Jun-Yeong cannot hold his alcohol but does not rule out he could be an alcoholic. The psychosis of significant hallucinations or delusions is more extreme than what could potentially be attributed to alcohol intoxication or withdrawal and such can last several days. But the one issue to this theory is that Jun-Yeong is not looking at the woman.

The idea of another person living in the large house is more probable. But no interaction with Jun-Yeong could mean that person is a social hermit, or has a psychotic disorder like schizophrenia which keeps her house bound. I have a seed of a theory about her but will hold off until I have more circumstantial evidence.

If the drama is going to balance the cuteness with darkness, I thought Sin's inner demons would be enough.

I am intrigued as to whether your theory is proved right so hoping you get the evidence soon so can reveal it.

I think he does interact with the other person as she was waving so positively and seemed bright in that first session so I think it’s the editing set up to fool us. I am hoping they reveal it next week especially now his co worker has seen the house and may ask questions about who he lives with etc.

I don't think he has alcohol induced psychosis as he would struggle to hold coherent conversations and operate normally in work and would surely smell of alcohol if he was drinking to the extent it was effecting him in that way. Usually we see what the person sees in terms of ghosts or hallucinations so unless he is ignoring her it is odd he doesn’t acknowledge her in any way.

It's nice to see how Ma-Eum and Jun-Young are different and confronting things. Each of them has strenght and weakness and they can help each other instead to try to fight against each other. It's nice to see that their work place accepted their differences and doesn't ask both of them the same job.

Except Producer Kwon (you is given too much latitude for my taste), the team is really nice. They really help their rookie.

Ma-Eum confrontation with her father was really sad. I was happy to see her mother talk to him, saying she didn't do anything bad and deserves her father's congratulation for her job.

So who is the mystery woman who lives (or haunt) in the Jun-Young's house?

I do like the relationship between Maeum and Junyoung: they so clearly help each other see the world from a completely different angle. The moment where Junyoung read the room so quickly when they went to visit the artists, and later explained to Maeum what she'd missed seeing and why that had led to her unwittingly insulting someone, was gold. And as other Beanies have said, having the FL as the confident, strong, but blundering-into-error character and the ML as the more emotionally intelligent, less confident character is a great move. I particularly appreciated how their colleague valued both their work styles, commenting that Junyoung's reluctance to manage his own artist at this stage was not a sign of weakness but simply reflected a different tempo in his development. Beautiful little moment.

The two of them would make a really good business team, honestly. She has the instinctive feel for it and can lean in on the artist management side, but he seems to understand dynamics better (would’ve been good to have him around for the rookie webtooner meeting when Ma Eum totally missed her withdrawing) and likely understands the financial side of the business better too. If the two of them team up - he can analyze the strategic landscape, she can zero in on the actual talent in those categories, he can help temper her room-blindness and also likely act as a throttle/gas on the speed she needs competitively to develop artists’ work. He’s strategy and she’s delivery.

Agreed, if Junyeong goes double agent the management team with the skills of the two rookies could turn the company around and make such a strong case that Evil Oily Boss Guy will have to concede and leave to prevent being sacked for his machiavellian approach.

I want to like this show (and I DO like this show!) but I’m going to black out from rage if the management team of the webtoon division continue this way! Ji-hyung and Man-cheol need someone to come in and kick them - no, you do NOT accept that one of your team is burning through rookies like kindling because he keeps money rolling in! The technique he cracked is finding novels and producing them as webtoons in tandem with dramas using new talent, that part is genuine and savvy. But the part where he burns out rookies and artists is unnecessary and absolutely going to come back to bite them. The company will get a bad reputation and surviving artists won’t work with them, and eventually that reaches critical mass. Also that dude’s been openly disrespectful in meetings, he shunted work onto a junior team member, he stole another PD’s artist - all of these things are team poison that leads to attrition and that’s wasted training money. I know the show might gloss over it (kdramas aren’t fantastically well-known for realistic workplace consequences) but in this case it’s just too obvious. Ji-hyung and Man-cheol are screwing up by shielding that guy and it makes them look incompetent.

Meanwhile, they’re leaving Ma Eum to make massive mistakes. Other than the occasional mentor-ish monologue of wisdom they’re not really coaching her; no one told her not to talk about other artists or PDs? She was allowed to completely traumatize her new artist with bulk feedback? At least the other rookie seems to realize she can’t read a damn room. And him!! Why hasn’t anyone figured out that he can likely make a strategic business case for the webtoons team?!

…I get overly fixated on kdrama management issues, I know. But man. I’m getting mad enough at Man-cheol in particular to kinda side with Evil Oily Boss Guy about whether the webtoon division should survive in its current form and I don’t like it!

These are all valid points. I think the way the PD role is presented as so fluid that they want the two rookies to find their own way is just ridiculous. They have given them no guidelines and just give the impression if there is anything too dodgy then they will step in to deal with it and accept any collateral damage. It does show that this management approach is being used consistently whatever level their staff are at. They were all traumatised by the way the company was closed down but allowing someone to use unhealthy strategies to manage a difficult situation is not supporting that person or the company. The results justify the means is what leads to the CEO approach of using a sleeper in the team to close it down.
Why would they have assigned Junyeong to the worst mentor knowing that he would have to use the osmosis approach to learn. If they listen to his feedback on what he observed and they know he wasn’t directed to work on those areas by his mentor why is no one asking him why he is doing this and what he plans to do with the info.

Also the bullying and scam re the injury why is no one suspicious or dealing with these two and their unacceptable behaviour. What message does it give when they don’t talk with the participants about recording the incident but not challenging the bullies or supporting the person being bullied.

Yes yes yes to everything you just said! Producer Kwon’s behaviour is not only unacceptable because he’s leveraging his power to abuse rookies, but it is also a huge detriment to the webtoon team’s eventual bottom line. What you said what attrition is is absolutely true. Frankly, I’m surprised that none of the rookie artists he’s burnt out of the industry hasn’t spread word of his exploitative conduct. I know the show will probably ignore the dire consequences that would’ve happened in a real company in favour for giving this incompetent asshole a sappy redemption arc, but it’s extremely frustrating to watch. No wonder this team is constantly in danger of being shut down. If they’re so willing to keep this guy around and justify his habits for the short-term success, then there’s no saving them for the long run. Maybe Evil Oily Boss Guy (great term, btw) has a point!

Might be because all ot them,or like 90% of the rookies like noted knew before they signed with him what and how he was but their desire and desperation to debut made them think that in the end even signed they would be that one special one...So his reputation is quite known.

Oh, and don’t get me started on the complete lack of training Ma-eum and Joon-young got. I swear to god I got more training from my supervisor back when I worked as a cashier at a supermarket. And you’re telling me they immediately got to work as producers?? This team would’ve collapsed within WEEKS in a real company setting. I get that this is a drama and we can’t necessarily expect every nitty-gritty detail of drudging and surviving in a corporate setting, but they should at least make it so anybody who has worked in an office doesn’t immediately roll their eyes at the sheer unrealism.

I am choosing to believe that they are getting training that we just aren't seeing. For example, the timeline is quite a bit more extended that I realized - the newbie artist (Vampire family?) said she'd been working with Ma Eum for 3 months following the webtoon camp and Ma Eum does seem to understand how to analyze and critique a webtoon beyond a casual user. Also, Ma Eum's co-worker immediately stepped in and offered to answer any questions when she didn't know how to use messenger (or some other very simple workplace technology- which is so laughable that she didn't understand), so I don't think she's just been left to flounder endlessly on her own. I'm not sure why they aren't showing more of that, but I don't know that not visually representing it means that they aren't getting any form of training.

Shows like Alchemy and EAW have millions of comments and it gives the impression that all is calm with the shows with fewer comments. I am glad because I know people don’t tend to come back to the lower ranking weecaps so if there is not much said in the first 24 hours that’s usually it for the conversation and the late entry comments don’t tend to get likes let alone responses because no one is reading them.

I dropped this drama for this precise reason... and I see the issue keeps being present. If you have a company that is failing you DO NOT let a rookie take care of your main artists and you only step in when it's almost too late and she has made a mess. Can't you just give her some advice BEFORE the disater? She know NOTHING of this job. The businnes part is just too unrealistic for me unfortunately...

Makes you wonder what was in the job description if the job is so vague that a rookie can just be left to make it up as they go along! How disrespectful to the artists and the rookies. It’s lucky that Yoomi is around to help fill in the gaps for some things and even helps Duhee when he is having a hard time. I wonder how she is surviving with the team dynamics being as they are. Prior to the rookies coming in things must have been tough as they have changed the atmosphere in the team.

Unrealistic, yes, but in the context that the department is being squeezed Gwan-Young to push it towards dissolution by being short staffed has been shown. The writer is giving the department no choice but to add more artists in order to increase sales which means rookies have to have a baptism under fire.

But to give them their best artists? To risk not having the new chapters of the webtoon ready and simply hoping that the rookie will manage to get them just a few seconds before the deadline? And what about losing tons readers because you reveal too late that a PD needs to give proper advice to the artist and follow him closely? That makes no sense at all... the boss just scolds Maeum and waits for her to fix everything. He is lucky that in the end she always manages to do it.

I really enjoyed these episodes for the reasons mentioned in the weecap—the background behind Kwon PDs harshness and more of the role reversal for our newbie PD pair (I almost died with the motorcycle grab and spin). I knew there was more to Kwon PD because we were given a glimpse of him being a total fool for his daughter in previous episodes so I figured he couldn’t get a total baddie.

Another reason I enjoyed these episodes (and show in general) is it’s portrayal of Maeum. She tows the line and is sometimes in danger of crossing into “overly-righteous, think-before-he/she-acts in the name of justice” lead territory. I really can’t stand those types of characters and was almost considering dropping the show when she and Kwon PD were having their issues. Thankfully, the show stayed true and had Maeum learn and grow once again. Yay, show! Yay, Maeum! Yay, making boys hearts flutter with female chivalry!

Just binged through episode 5 & 6! I'm really loving how they are gradually giving us more details about who everyone on the team is as a person. Although, I still wouldn't give Young-bae a pass :( I appreciate that we got to know the reasons behind his actions, but that doesn't justify him using rookie artists as robots who spit out art.

Moving on, like others have commented I think I see the hint of romance blooming! Joon-Young and Ji-Hyung are definitely catching feelings for Ma-Eum! But so far Ma-Eum is in her own world and needs time to learn more about herself and the world before she can even think about romance.

I hope Pomme is alright. That security camera in her apartment and the parking lot scene gave some bad vibes.

Thanks for reminding me of the Pomme storyline. I thought it was odd that she lives in a massive posh apartment block but there is no security monitoring who goes in and out the building and car park as usually you need ID to get into the car parks and the building. I also thought they might have cameras in the corridor or only residents and authorised personnel could enter as I assumed that was why she was comfortable leaving all her expensive deliveries outside her door waiting for someone else to bring them in for her. For someone to know her routine and where she lives I wonder if its an ex friend or boyfriend who did the switch and as they zoomed in on her signature if they are going to do some kind of fraud.

I also wondered how come she accepted that rude PD as her PD and if he inherited her or scouted her once she was successful so she didn’t have to endure the pressured induction he gives everyone else.

I understand that Producer Kwon was burnt out and devastated by his professional and personal setbacks. However, his treatment of Seul-ah, as well as countless other rookie artists, is still completely unacceptable. I’m glad that Seul-ah eventually stood up for herself and rejected his abusive conduct, but she had to be fucking hospitalized in order to get there. The show still somewhat excusing his persistent abusive behaviour leaves a bad taste in my mouth. That man should not have this job, period.

That said, there is still a lot going for the show. I love both Ma-eum and Joo-young and their individual character arcs. Their budding friendship is such a joy to watch weekly and I like how they’re slowly influencing one another’s mindsets. And if they decide to make this relationship romantic (who am I kidding, this is dramaland) - which given Joon-young’s flustered reactions, they are - I’m in full support. They’re just so cute together, how could I not?

Now, who the hell is the woman in Joon-young’s house?? I really hope they don’t go with the hallucination explanation because the last thing this workplace slice-of-life drama needs is a dramatic left turn. And for reasons that should be obvious, I really, really hope it’s not a ghost or something equally stupid as that.

Even though I understand why PD Kwon acts the way he did in the last episodes because of his previous work experience, this is still no excuse for making a young artist work so long that she breaks down. My disappointment with the superiors was that they made excuses for this and did not influence PD Kwon to tone it down a bit.

I was all the more pleased that Seul-ah decided to pull the plug and told PD Kwon clearly that she did not want to go on like this.

I did enjoy this week when Jun-Young was caught between Ma Om and Pomme.. and they were both equally offended by him when he disparaged their cuteness/niceness...that a situation where you back out asap.
I said the first week and i'll say it again i smell a love triangle between our newbies and our deputy editor. I hope not, but this is drama land after all.

Yes the conversation Jihyung and Mancheol where they were talking at cross purposes said it all and Jihyung brought her a coffee and then walked away when he saw the two rookies already had drinks and were talking. I don't get why he would actively pursue his direct report as surely a sunbae and hubae relationship would be frowned upon due to the power imbalance and it’s such a small team it would be awkward.

Sigh, the leadership in this department is so poor! The incident with the two bullies at the workshop should have been thoroughly examined, even if Ma-eum claims it is all her fault. I would have wanted to know exactly what she did and why, at least to prevent something similar happening again and to limit any possible damage.
Young-bae is known to be a rookie graveyard? And they leave that unaddressed? Highly unprofessional.

There are some very dark forebodings in the drama. The mysterious woman in the flat, the spy camera in Pomme's flat and rookie Dae-ryuk who really worries me. He clearly has some serious mental issues. He saw a shadow coming out of his grandpa's body and on the next day grandpa died - was it due to injuries inflicted by Dae-ryuk? I am not sure how to interpret this scene.

Yes I was confused by that scene too, was it an out of body experience due to trauma or a memory of a real event. Daeryuk may have been trying to protect them both from a bully (we keep seeing him witness an aggressive man) but maybe he felt bad because his grandad died despite his best efforts.

I saw quite a lot of negative comments here on how this show handling leadership and/or addressing issues regarding the nasty PD, who is given some background that seems the drama's way of glossing his abusive way toward rookies (artist, junior, etc.),

okay, am I weird for saying that I dislike that nasty PD but also could see this situation as realistic (the treatment of the team leader and Ji Hyung towards him)?
I'm going to defend this drama on that front by saying that the leader and JinHyung have known the nasty PD for longer time, than MaEum (and us), so their choices to act on him (by understanding him being the bad guy in the team, and even "thanking" him) I see that as people who've known him for long and being together during the ups and lows of the company/team, they have history. That kind of relationship/friendship/colleagueship happens in real life (real work life).
I could not blame them for acting that way, and of course it could be damaging to the team (rightly so), but it also could just go wrong to some degree only, when the people inside the team are not feeling the same things like some of us here.

also, MaEum is not me, things that bother me much could just be bothering her in short time. From what i see, she's staying at NEON, and starting to make peace with her rage toward the nasty PD, so I take it as the drama showing that it's her journey and her choice. Definitely not mine, and I understand that too.

Now, about the lovelines, I'm teamjihyung during that a flicker of disappointment on his face on rooftop scene, but I'm teamJoonYoung during that "are you *really* okay" scene, hahaa..

All in all, I love this show so far and definitely looking forward to it every week.

My gripe about the work situation is less that it’s unrealistic, more that it’s a situation that absolutely leads to failure. So if we as an audience are supposed to rally behind this struggling webtoon team, that’s hard to do when the management team seem completely blind to obvious problems.

I can root for a team that hasn’t found it’s footing in a larger corporate environment, or one that tries incredibly hard but keeps missing it’s numbers, or has Evil Oily Boss Guy undermining them. But when that team also doesn’t train it’s rookies and allows an abusive PD to burn out artists, that’s a different thing.

With the artist Ma Eum was developing, for instance - she was an INVESTMENT by the team. They spent money training her at the camp. They saw potential in her, out of all the camp attendees. They dedicated three months of Ma Sun’s focus to developing her storyboards. And then Crap PD comes along and not only stops an original series in development but scorches the artist - this after her found her on an art forum, seemingly not caring he was diverting tons of money spent investing in her? And then he tries to throw her away and bring in a new artist (rapidly losing money here), and she decides that she won’t work with him again - does anyone honestly think she’d continue developing with NEON after that? What type of management allows a staff member to so thoroughly demoralize colleagues and contractors while seemingly burning money?

I can’t root for an underdog team that’s just shown why it really needs to be thoroughly restructured. I hate being Team Evil Oily Boss Guy, but that’s what happened this week - instead of the episode making me understand Crap PD, I ended up understanding Evil Oily Boss. Not what the show intended, I think.

you got me on that last sentence of the first para, you're right, the writer/story might want us to root for the team. i guess i didn't think much of it before, i might have decided that I root for the newbies (ma eum especially) as good influence to the team, to shake things up and made the other managers to step up for the problem if they want the team to survive not only from oily boss threat but more on great teamwork, and that means the nasty PD mechanism need to be addressed, period.
but, again, i'm playing my 'reality' card here for this drama, i just seem to appreciate the show for showing this ugly side of a workplace: some empoyees might know that someone/a manager works in borderline poisonous way to the team but there are no clear cut method to address this eventhough we all know that's happening (the higher ups have history, the nasty PD brought all the profit, etc.), i would be on rage if i'm in that team, but i might choose to do my own way if i want to stay in the team (for some reason), just like MaEum, and I'm rooting for her to stay true to her values while balancing her newfound dream of working for that company, and that's not easy, not easy at all, but i want to see her emerges as the victor. Ma Eum, fighting!

I think you are right about the value in showing real world work place issues and different ways to deal with it. We often see it in the extreme forms where people are scared to challenge due to the potential consequences such as in Kim Jiyoung born 1982, Something in the rain and On the verge of insanity where the people instigating the abuse were in positions of power. In this case there are two reasonable people holding powerful positions and they have a relationship with the PD so there is an expectation that they would address the issue for what it is. The all or nothing approach is only one way of dealing with the challenges of being supportive of the artists and placing expectations re workload. They clearly do not believe the means justify the ends otherwise they would be instructing all the staff to adopt this approach and play the CEO at his own game. Then when they are no longer in a position where they are under threat they can go back to a balance of money making and passion projects like the boot camp.

Rooting for Ma Eum is good! I know I’m biased because I’m in management as my day job, so when I see bad management being rewarded by the show I get all… intense. It’s probably a much better show if you identify with the rookies versus the management team.

Bad managers and low-performing teams absolutely exist, and bad managers are just sometimes weak in that area. But… I can’t help thinking I’d’ve restructured the team by now. I promise I’m not Evil or Oily. But this is a waste of talent and rookies.

I love this show for it's honest portrayal of the human condition with all it's strengths and weaknesses. All the characters here seem very real and the studio is beginning to feel like home. I think KSJ is one of the most attractive actresses out there - her face is a kaleidoscope of emotions - and without being nearly as beautiful as some of our stars, she is completely engaging. I would love to see her dressed up in something other than baggy clothes - I love my Cinderellas! - I think her colleague would probably have heart failure! Also the whole background of Webtoons is fascinating. I read comics as a girl, but the whole Comic business in Korea seems to be a recurring theme and clearly Webtoons are for adults, not just children. Interesting!

The ruthless side of the business casts a long shadow in these episodes. Ma-eum’s bright spirit starts to harden with the backstory of producer Young-Bae. It did show that the other producers and director still don’t get the idea of being ruthless about getting marketable content and artists to boost sales. I was waiting for Jun-Yeong to tell them what needs to be done in order to turn the department around. But maybe he is too scared to risk his lifeboat in Gwan-Young. Adding a stalker element into the department woes seems a little overkill. The happy foundation story is going to make a hard turn toward sadness starting with Seul-A’s burnout and Shin’s inner demons.

I knew it would be hard to keep up the up-beat, smiley tone of the show throughout every episode, but it took a good moment of the camp quickly into bad places (fight between artists to abusive deadlines being accepted because that's being "a professional.")

Let’s hope they do like Shooting stars and Love All, play and have a couple of heavy issues and then come back to the sunshine. It’s a shame we can’t have day to day challenges like the first few episodes with the artists having issues that impact on their ability to do their job and the CEO wanting to shut things down without the added aggression and change of tone to underline this is the part where all is not well🥺

I feel like everything I've wanted to say has already been said! HAHA.

That scene at the beginning of episode 6 where Ma-eum breaks down after breaking the news of her job to her dad really got to me. It was so relatable - I know that I've been there many times, just needing to hear from someone that "I did well", "I'm doing well", "I did a good job".

This drama continues to keep me invested in our characters because we understand each of them :)

Glad I'm not the only person starting to worry JY may have a ghost problem.

Honestly ended up thinking worse of PD Kwon (and the team) after those episodes than anyway sympathetic. And its gross that they thank him for being an exploitative donkeybutt so the rest of them can focus on passion projects. I don't quite understand how each PD isn't also trying to raise revenue, because yes passion projects are good but they should also have normal revenue making projects.

Which kinda fits with my question on what the team is doing to turn around their bad situation? The Big Boss doesn't look like she's being sympathetic anymore.

This drama is rattling along at a good pace. Kwon PD should not have been thanked essentially for burning out talented rookies. A very strange path to take in the story.
I'm enjoying the character development however, but I'd like a little more insight into our ML.
I love the flip over of tropes from ML to FL in relation to saving him from the scooter, lifting the heavy boxes and being completely oblivious to the heart flutters she is giving him. Hilarious.

This drama is definitely not light. Lacking in the humor department this time. There will be more dark and dramatic plots. The team will face worse problems and obstacles before they succeed. I did like the scene with Joon Young getting caught by Ma Eum and Pomme, heh.

Ma Eum was so sweet when she did that mini photoshoot displaying all her expressions and poses. Real cute.

I'm still curious about the world of webtoon artists and producers~ And I like Ma Eum and Joon Young a lot. They balance each other well.

I'm rooting for Dae Ryuk so much. I keep waiting for his big break! But his character arc is taking a while, eh? It was nice when he complimented Dong Hee. Even though he probably didn't explain or phrase it in the best way, it was a good scene when he tried to dissuade him from thinking negative thoughts. I'd like to see Dong Hee make his debut too.

We have not seen her interacting with anyone whether it’s Joonyoung or the staff so we are all hoping the info will be released this week especially when we saw the evidence of a heavy drinker having been in the home at some point that day. Have you read the comments section for the last couple of weeks? Lots of theories have been discussed or hinted at.

And currently my Wiki is showing that both are available in my region. I am not sure if I watch them both at the same time. Or wait for Korean one to finish and then watch Japanese one.

I am watching them both at the same time and they are similar in terms of the key story themes but very different in terms of Japanese is set in publishing so they show the store owners and sales reps and the stress of the move to webtoons effecting sales of comic books. There is less backstory of the staff and it’s only ten episodes long. I wanted to binge it but they are releasing it weekly which is annoying as it’s from 2016.

Yes UK. There are a few of us who connected in a chat on Jeeves and Wooster I think. It was in the early days of being on here and like a fool I didn't take down everyone’s tags so I would remember who was in the time zone and likely to have tips on where to access the dramas but vague memory that someone was in Scotland and someone else in Ireland and a couple of us in England.

Let me check when it is finishing it here. That was one reason I was keeping the decision on hold. But thanks for tell me! I have plans to watch three films post work (in theater) in the next week. They are showing old films by Wong Kar Wai and Park Chan Wook in my city and I am really looking forward to watch some of them in theater again.

While we are all busy about the supposed love triangle there is a fourth character who might develop a crush on Ma eum because of some obvious reasons. Our Dae-ryuk! The kind of attention she is paying to him plus the situation and apparent trauma he has and his dream to be a webtoon artist, it is no surprise if he falls for her.

Yes to be seen as a person of value after the horrendous experiences he has had it would be easy to confuse his feelings of gratitude for romantic love but he clearly said he does not see her as a woman but as God and that is putting her on a very high threshold.
