Love is for Suckers: Episodes 13-14

Our Kingdom of Love cast is calling it quits at the same time our leads make a serious start. This is a week of apologies for past offenses and apologetic glances for mistakes in progress. As our heroine tries to balance work and love, our PDs find themselves in a situation where work and love combine, like it or not.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

We ended last week with Yeo-reum finally admitting her feelings for Jae-hoon and the two getting down to business immediately. This week, we see Yeo-reum wake up in Jae-hoon’s bed the morning after, feeling awkward. Jae-hoon is already up cooking breakfast, totally at ease.

At the breakfast table, Jae-hoon leans in for a kiss and says, “I love you.” Yeo-reum stares as he goes on to tell her she’s the one. He’s done playing hard to get and wants to be genuine with her. Since Kingdom of Love will finish filming this week, they agree to wrap that up first and then revisit the talk about their relationship.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

But from then on, their relationship is pretty much all they can talk about. On set the next day, we get a sort-of explanation for Yeo-reum’s behavior the past few weeks. She apologizes to Jae-hoon for complicating things, saying she was trying to be a professional producer and to control her heart. She was selfish. He says it’s okay to be selfish and they start talking about how they’ll treat each other in the future. Their relationship is already a sealed deal.

A few days later — back to her problem-solving self at work — Yeo-reum falls off a balcony while trying to talk down a drunk and depressed cast member who seems suicidal. It’s only a couple of stories up, and she falls onto some mattresses the cast has laid out underneath, but she loses consciousness. When she wakes in the hospital, Jae-hoon is by her side. Her first questions are about work. Jae-hoon thinks she should be worried about herself first (which makes me wonder if he still doesn’t get why she brushed him off the last few weeks — her career is important to her sense of self).

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

With only one episode left of Kingdom of Love, the cast has a chance to go on some final dates before they pair up. They’re given three “date coupons” each worth one hour of time to spend with another cast member. The cast begins to exchange coupons with their usual partners: Chef John with the weather forecaster and Ji-wan with the manipulative start-up owner.

Before it’s too late, Ji-wan rips one of her coupons in half and asks Chef John for just thirty minutes of his time. He accepts without hesitation, leaving the cast and crew to wonder what’s going on. Unfortunately, on their short date, Ji-wan is being somewhat honest with her feelings, but Chef John can’t bring himself to fess up in front of the camera. He tells her she could have asked for an hour-long date — but then tempers it by saying she would have had time for a full lunch in that case, instead of just dessert.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14 Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

Ji-wan leaves the restaurant (and we see she’s stepped up her outfit game with thigh-high boots and a mini skirt) and the chef’s next date walks in. We know from an earlier conversation that Chef John is supposed to have a kiss on this next date. Chae-ri sets it up, reminding Chef John that he promised to show his rear on this season of Kingdom of Love, but she’ll settle for an on-air kiss instead. The weather forecaster is game to get the attention and incites the kiss.

Before their lips touch, Ji-wan comes back looking for her phone. Seeing the two so close upsets her and she runs back out. Chef John grabs Ji-wan’s phone and runs after her, only to hand it to her and watch her leave. (I’m liking being strung along right now because I trust the payoff is going to be that much better in the end. Also, is it just me or has John Jang gotten better looking since he started liking Ji-wan?)

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14 Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

When the time comes for the cast to make their final choices, there are no surprises. In the closing ceremony, the men each receive a cake, which they can offer to the woman of their choice. The women can either accept the cake, and go on to a “sweet life” dating the man after the show, or smash the cake in the guy’s face.

Before this event takes place, Jae-hoon has told both Ji-yeon and Yeo-reum that he is going to pick Ji-yeon. He tells Ji-yeon that he can’t reciprocate her feelings, but he will select her as a final act of respect toward someone who deserves it. At the event, Ji-yeon takes the cake and says that she has been happy with Jae-hoon from the moment they met. But, she adds, this is the end for them — and then smushes the cake in his face. (This seems like an appropriate ending for these two.)

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

Ji-wan, unable to get Chef John to look her way, accepts a cake from the manipulator. When Chef John goes to present his cake to the woman he’s expected to, he looks over at Ji-wan, who’s looking back at him, and smiles — but then continues what he’s doing. (Are these two really going to swallow their hearts and not confess?! I so wanted a Kingdom of Love surprise ending.)

The love stories appear to be amping up for their grand finale next week. So, the real highlight of these episodes is that we finally get to focus on Chae-ri. We don’t get a whole lot more of her backstory but we get a peek into her true feelings. We learn that Chae-ri is not unfeeling (as her colleagues might think), but that she has so much pain she keeps it bottled up most of the time — trying to feel nothing.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

We see Chae-ri with her abusive stepmom who has been a part of her life since Chae-ri’s mother died thirty years ago. The woman is awful, telling Chae-ri she should have died along with her mother. We see Chae-ri break down after this interaction. She cries alone and then, when she stumbles on Jae-hoon on her way back to the set, she tells him that she hasn’t known love in her life — she only knows abandonment and misery.

Later that night, Chae-ri is live-watching what’s happening on all the cameras in the house. She sees Jae-hoon and Yeo-reum acting lovey-dovey and it puts her sense of loneliness over the top. She goes to the room of one of the male cast members and asks, “Would you sleep with me just once?” (This scene is odd because it appears that she knocks on the doors of all five men on the show, but we only see one answer the door.)

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

Chae-ri enters the room of the guy who owns a gym, but he’s not fully convinced she’s serious. When it seems she might be rejected, tears form in her eyes and she starts to leave. He seems to understand how sad she is and it almost feels like he’s taking pity on her. He covers all the cameras in the room with cloths before they go ahead with it, but one of the cloths falls and the deed appears to be recorded. Also, we see someone taking photos of Chae-ri when she enters his room.

After they sleep together, he asks why she picked him. Chae-ri says that in his interview, when asked what love means to him, he answered that love is a luxury. She thanks him for allowing her to feel warmth, at least for a moment, and then wishes him well, saying she hopes love won’t be a luxury in his life. The next day, the woman he chooses on Kingdom of Love accepts the offer to keep dating him after the show.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

I loved getting to know Chae-ri in this way. While I’ve always found her honesty and humor likable, her vulnerabilities are really relatable. She doesn’t want to feel her pain — so asks for a moment of healing — but doesn’t want a real connection because it could lead to more pain. I kind of fell in love with her in these scenes.

After Yeo-reum’s fall, Chae-ri feels like everyone is looking at her with blaming eyes. She announces the show is over; everyone can go home now. The cast and crew clear out and the Kingdom is empty.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

Before the final episode airs, someone on the cast anonymously reports that a staff member and a cast member hooked up during filming. The online article asks, “Are they trying to deceive the viewers?” (Wait, are you telling me reality shows don’t show reality?) The news is almost certainly about Chae-ri, but Yeo-reum assumes it’s about her, especially since she was the other party in Jae-hoon’s kiss scene. Yeo-reum promises to try to find out who reported the scandal before the final episode is broadcast.

At work, between the knife incident and the bipolar cast member on the balcony, Chae-ri is already in trouble. With the news about the cast/crew relationship, she and Yeo-reum find themselves in their boss’s office, eyes down in shame, for the second time in two weeks. (For some reason, I find these two adorable getting reprimanded together.) Chae-ri tells their boss she doesn’t know who it could be. Yeo-reum thinks Chae-ri is covering for her, not knowing there’s anyone else to cover for.

There’s a final scene of someone taking photos of Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon entering the gate to their house (where Yeo-reum has moved back in downstairs). So, even if the news was about Chae-ri, Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon have been found out.

Love is for Suckers Episodes 13-14

Our penultimate week didn’t leave me super excited but I’m hoping that’s because we’re having a little dip in the energy to ready us for fireworks next week. As much as I love Chae-ri — and I was happy to see what’s underneath all her coldness — I’m worried about what twists might be in store. Why did we hear her knock on five doors and only see what happened at one? Is it possible Chae-ri staged the rumors to bring more interest to her show? I know, it’s terrible — I love her, but I don’t trust her.

One thing I’m really curious about is how the drama will end its send up of reality TV. It started as a spoof of variety shows. But as it’s gone on, I feel like it’s become a more serious critique of the genre. This week had a bunch of standout moments. For one, the humiliated woman on the balcony sobs — possibly ready to jump — wondering how people who don’t even know her can says such terrible things about her after seeing her on TV. Yeo-reum tries to take responsibility, saying she should have transmitted all her best features — it’s the PD’s fault the public isn’t seeing her for who she is. It’s an interesting take — one of many interesting tidbits we’ve seen throughout the drama — and I’m looking forward to seeing if all these parts come together into a whole.

@dramaddictally Thank you for the weecap.
This finishes next week so they clearly decided to go the old skool route of draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaging everything out until the last ten minutes of episode 16.

Jaehoon kept his side of the bargain to save Jiyeon’s pride on camera by making out they will stay together after the show and she literally throws it back in his face. Joon and Jiwan gaze longingly but go ahead with the losers they were matched with throughout the show. It’s pretty obvious as soon as the cameras stop they will be saying thanks but no thanks.

PD Kang’s female caregiver is the maths equation equivalent of sadistic times infinity. I thought the aunt from Love in contract casually throwing the death of parent into an angry retort to a child was cold but this unnecessary conversation takes the ‘Outrageous things to say to a child about the death of a parent’ first prize.

Not sure which cast member was filming PD Kang going into the contestant’s room but how come none of the crew caught them via the bedroom video? They made a big point that people transcribe all the footage around the site so how was it missed? Did she discover and delete it herself as she was on duty alone at that time?

So happy to see Sangwoo back in the team fully recovered, I loved his dynamic with Yeoreum, he was her ‘work husband’ and her whole team a found family. The loss of this aspect of the drama left a noticeable hole for me. The shallow nature of the reality tv show entered the real drama’s plot line and therefore the sharp relief that showed the difference between the two teams was lost. Even the return of the lovely parents felt different they blanked Jaehoon when I am pretty sure he was the one who would have called them, the dad said nothing of significance while mum told her to change jobs like every week she was doing something that put her life in danger. Even with the recent knife incident it was a bit of an extreme reaction.

Looking forward to witnessing Joon wooing Jiwan now they can have their sweet romance uncontaminated by the reality show. I always find it weird how mobile phones become invisible in dramas when it’s necessary for the plot. Surely, after the day trip to the family restaurant they would have exchanged phone numbers; even acquaintances do this in real life, promising to keep in touch after the show or to text each other when they were in their bedrooms and didn’t want to be caught talking on camera.

This is the first K drama I have watched were the main leads have become Extras in their own drama; it was like Extraordinary You in reverse. I don’t dislike the leads’ storyline, I just feel they took away the elements that made it a fun watch in order to make the drama within the drama stand out but this added unnecessary complications that didn’t add to the story.

On a happier note I hope that Daesik and Hyejin’s cans were soft drinks because they are in the early stages of pregnancy but decided it’s too...

early to share the news due to the previous difficulties achieving a viable pregnancy. That would be a great ending shot if there was a group trip with Daesik and Hyejin’s twins/triplets, Yeoreum and Jaehoon, and Jaehoon’s sister and Sangwoo, as a couple, all playing with the babies at ‘the beach of reflection’. With the guest house owner in the background helping set up the picnic.

I hope that they are pregnant. It also made me sad that YR didn't ask Hyejin about it when they next met and let Hyejin talk more about it.

I think you have to refrain from alcohol right during IVF treatments, which Hye-jin was getting. Daesik may be drinking soft drinks in solidarity with his wife who has to give up alcohol for a chance for a pregnancy to happen. Which is what a good husband should do! I hope we get a happy ending for their pregnancy journey too!

PD Kang, Chief Jang and Ji-Wan stole the show.

I'm happy they didn't try to make Chief Jang and Ji-Wan getting closer during the show. I think Chief Jang was right to not male any move and just follow the "script". Ji-Wan deserves better than a romance on a TV show.

I was wondering when I watch the actor who plays John Jang and he was the hot sunbae in Rookie Cop !

But yeah, she probably deserves better.

I think the viewers are being manipulated here. We all complained about the stupidity of the central relationship, YR's dense behaviour, her selfishness, Jae-Hoon throwing himself down to be walked over again and again, no real communication between them enabling the missed opportunities to continue. As though reading our minds, they suddenly start talking, make a couple of speeches about where it went wrong, promise they will be together in a week, and we are supposed to just accept they finally know what they are doing. This rehabilitation of YR particularly has been subjected to a lot of spin, which hasn't gone unnoticed in this house.

How many times has Jae-Hoon asked her why she is so selfless and always thinking of others in these last two episodes? He never said it before. Now that their relationship has been jogged back onto the rails she is being portrayed as some kind of saint in everyone's eyes, even though she hasn't thought of others at all, it's herself first and what she thinks she needs, KoL second. Then her parents show up at the hospital scolding her for the same selflessness. So our heroine has risked her life, been totally selfless since birth, and everyone but me appreciates it and is suddenly exasperated because she deserves so much more. All her previous questionable behaviour is erased in a few scenes. No, no, no. I wasn't even going to mention these two but it annoyed me so much I had to say it. They have been upstaged by just about everything and even Sang-woo seems to have been thrown into a black hole somewhere. Did the saintly YR and JH not pop in to see him at the hospital? Did anyone?

Bah humbug.

Other than Chief Jang and Ji-Wan this show managed to suck all the joy out of it. And my god, I hate Yeo-reum clothes so much. Someone please get rid of all of her boots please. How can you unintentionally dress a woman who looks like a model so bad?

I was also unfortunate to watch the unedited amazon version. So a lot of ropes, mics and no music. *awkward*

I was wondering whether the translation for what she said was incorrect but it seems she did say that she was happy…HAPPY…?!?!? Have I lost my only remaining marble or did she not cry 95% of the time?!?🤦🏻‍♀️ I hope she gets to experience real happiness because that was not it.

I don't know about 'Love is for Suckers' but certainly 'Who Dares Wins', even if it's one step forward and one step back at times. Enter John/Joon and Ji-Wan, who have admitted their feelings to themselves if not declared them to each other, but their eyes speak volumes. JJ is feeling guilty for his compromising moment with Tae-Mi, and Ji-Wan's unvoiced disappointment really cut him, that is clear. She underlined it by accepting the cake from sleazy app guy, so JJ didn't even attempt to undo it by offering his (was he considering it?). Ji-wan cut him off at the knees leaving him high and dry with Tae-Mi, a mirror of his previous fake self before genuine feelings came knocking.

Ji-wan has been so wonderfully honest and direct throughout - asking to accompany him as he was about to visit his mother, asking him for a 30 min date, then explaining she thought he might refuse if she'd asked for longer, and JJ clearly hasn't reached that level of honesty yet, though I do believe he wants to. Ji-Wan's reproachful eyes are tormenting him, and I think he will rise to new heights next week. He really does care about her and her opinion, and I think he will man up and publicly steal her away from app guy without caring about the reaction of the contestants, or Chae-ri (who should be worrying about acidentally showing her own butt, not his). Chef and webtoon writer have been the highlight of this drama for me. May it end in wedding cake.

You said this so beautifully! I don't think he'll have to steal her away from start up guy, I'm pretty sure he's just gonna ghost her now that the show's over. Unless maybe he'll try to keep her once he finds out John's interested, because I don't think his ego can handle a woman who looks like Ji-wan (I mean, in his eyes, I think she's beautiful!) rejecting him.

This is the first drama that I rolled my eyes watching the leads. I practically fast forwarded the lead scene while I enjoyed every bit of Chef Jang and Jiwan. I hope they get to marry in the drama. You can practically see it in Chef Jang's eyes that he enjoys being with Jiwan. She always compliments him.

I am looking forward to seeing the beautiful relationship between the both of them.

Love is for Suckers is indeed a drama that is boring.

I also agree that they took away the fun elements-- the great chemistry between YR and JH. I didn't understand why YR felt so awkward the next day, and that again made me feel less happy about their getting together. If they'd shown a scene of them happily interacting, like in the beginning, that would have made me much more invested. Also, I still think YR needs to apologize for bringing the camera crew to his hideaway. And I still have no idea why they couldn't date when they were students. I agree with others that their love story has become the side show and I'm more invested in the chef and Jiwan. But I was very upset that Jiwan accepted that other guy who threw her to a guy with a knife. I wanted her to have more self-respect than that and just say no. I'd rather be single than be with him. And I just didn't find believable that YR fell off the balcony.

The more I read about this show ( because I'm certainly not watching it anymore) the more I think it's at least partially inspired by the American show, Unreal. Except that Unreal is a really good, no-holds-barred indictment of dating shows whereas this show seems to believe there could be such a thing as 'real' one with 'genuine' feelings if everyone was just nice, supportive and empathetic and at no point does it realise that nobody would watch that show because nobody watches dating shows to watch people actually fall in love.

Anyway, the JR balcony scene is a lightweight, whitewashed version of a similar scene in Unreal. Where it actually made sense and didn't pull its punches.

Really, the way YR tiptoed to the balcony and gingerly moved every dangling limb back over, telling the girl to take it S L O W L Y had me infuriated. It was literally slow motion, and once she had a good grip on her should have yanked her back to safety, fast. I really was expecting the diaturbed girl to deliberately throw the pair of them off, it all took so long.

I think YR is totally inept at just about anything, and JH isn't much better. OK he managed to entertain her all night and then make breakfast for her as though she belongs there, but oh dear - she can't even handle that, coyly obsessing about her clothes. Why? I'm sure he's seen everything underneath them! Such an idiot.

I think you really might be right here. The problem that I see with the writing is that it wants to be critical of the reality dating concept, but it can't bring itself to do so. It shows the damage done to some of the contestants, but the reality show actually promotes the main relationship, while empowering the two female PDs, or at least displaying their skills. The manipulative cynicism of Chae-Ri, which might provide a real point of criticism, is shown to be the result of trauma--she's not really that bad after all. In fact it seems to suggest we should feel real regret that the show was cut short (we do, I guess, because it meant a total filler episode.)

Weirdly, as well,it isn't spoofing the absurd "competitive" dating activities at all. At no point watching these did I even crack a smile, yet isn't one real attraction of actual reality" dating shows their ridiculousness? Even the smashing of cakes in the face of the men, or not, was played as some sort of meaningful moment either of betrayal or of realization.

So its not satirically funny, its not incisively critical, and even though the romances are appealing, their presentation is hindered by the main arena in which they are occurring. What a disappointment.

But of course, I will still watch the last two episodes to see how it turns out, disappointing myself. I will check for a mic or hidden camera first, though.

Eeesh, why does YR look so fearful and dismayed as JH is undressing and kissing her at the start of 13? This is not the unhesitating consent scenario we saw at the end of 12 and it feels wrong, even if she subsequently wraps her arms around him and kisses back. And at breakfast he’s 100% like it’s the morning after his first night with the love of his life and he couldn’t be happier to be with her, and she’s acting like she unexpectedly woke up naked in his bed after being drunk which she was not and is wondering what exactly happened. Why so awkward? Since the writers probably haven’t read Lee Tennant’s convincing essay, I could blame the actors and particularly Lee Da-hee for not showing the emotional journey rather than think YR is supposed to be feeling ambivalent, but that’s a BIG leap. She looks baffled or just blank when he confesses again. There’s not enough development between that and the subsequent scenes where she’s affectionate with him. Now I’m [not really] waiting for a whole closetful of shoes to drop.

This show is hitting the heavy emotional beats for all the wrong people. The music says we are actually supposed to feel sorry for Ji-yeon after she smashes a cake into JH’s face. I don’t feel particularly sorry for him, either, but what does she have to feel aggrieved about? I refuse to pity Chae-ri. Having a makjang evil stepmother does not entitle you to be unprofessional, deceitful, and rude to everyone else in your life. I mostly blame the way her character is written but also the actor’s stone-faced delivery - as so often happens in kdramas, the show has gone overboard making her awful and she hasn’t had enough nuance or backstory for a couple of brief trips inside her head and someone else’s bed to balance that.

The epically boring ‘reality’ show just drags on and on. The whole final choice/cake scene was interminable (and terribly edited) and we absolutely did not need an extensive reprise of the dumbass balcony scene. If only this were all meta commentary instead of sloppiness.

We know everyone has to trudge back to the ‘Kingdom’ set eventually because of that scene at the start of the first episode, but all the fun has leached out.

Yes, I have no idea why they had to follow what I've come to think of "the morning after" kdrama trope: the guy up, cooking breakfast, and the woman still in bed, embarrassed at showing her body to the person she just slept with.

As far as this trope, in general, I wonder why its the common way of dealing with the leads sleeping together. If a show wanted to be modest, and not show any part of the woman's body, wouldn't it be better to have her get up first off camera, and then show the guy waking up? Given that a male torso is okay to display in kdramas, he wouldn't have to fearfully wrap himself in a sheet.
But then I was thinking, do they want to show the man cooking to demonstrate that sex domesticated him? Maybe that a night of making love gave him new cooking skills? Its an interesting question to me, why its so often the guy up first.

That just requires a few new cutaways, really it'll save them a lot of work.

3

Noooooo - that would mean we'd have to see the dreadful clothes from this show again! Although JH's baggy sweats are no more unflattering to her than anything else she's worn, except maybe the ditzy teenager outfits. Maybe they can just reuse the naked-in-the-sheets shots.

2

Yeah I was going to say @elinor she's not wearing clothes in that scene. She wakes up, he's cooking in the kitchen with his back to her, she seems surprised that she's naked as though idk her clothes were supposed to fly back on of their own accord during the night (I also have other comments I could make about this trope but I will not because db is 15+).

Do a cutaway to a different man's back in the kitchen and you're all set. I forsee a great future of uncomfortable morning's after in Lee Da-hee's future with very little effort from her.

@leetennant: Ah, gotcha, just the in-bed bits then - not only would that save costs but someday we'd get the inevitable YouTube compilation of quick cuts of LDH hugging the sheets around her while she looks at one back after another, after another, after another ...

I suppose the breakfast trope is meant to demonstrate that the ML will care for her and to alleviate the fear that he'll abandon her once he gets what he wants, and therefore she wasn't wrong to trust him. It also offers great opportunities for coffee maker and frying pan PPL.

@elinor I totally forgot the PPL factor. And now that I think of it, I'd much rather have kitchen PPLs than any other possibilities associated with those circumstances!

I was also taken aback by YR's sad, fearful face at the end of 12 and the beginning of 13. They should have re-shot those scenes. I *think* the vibe was supposed to be that this is very serious and a long time coming for both of them, so no smiling allowed, I guess. Like a lot of things in this drama, those scenes really missed the mark.

Same. I thought it was her acting. I felt nothing for them. I found the morning after weird too. may be she is awkward that she slept with her friend? But didn’t she have enough time to address her feelings? Or was her feelings just fear of losing him. I really don’t know anymore.

Exactly. I was super upset that YR looked fearful and dismayed as JH is undressing and then upset again the next morning. I also didn't feel any pity for Chae-ri. It made her seem almost worse to me that she revealed the sexual abuse trauma of Ji-wan.

I loved reading your comments so much that I created an account to join in! At this point I'm only watching for John and Ji-wan, with whom I am OBSESSED (hence why I needed another space to discuss them). I was upset that not only were they only in one scene, but that the first 20-30 min of the show was just retreading previous ground.

Does anyone have any thoughts on that scene in the preview [SPOILER]? It's strange that a sexual trauma survivor like herself would voluntarily go into a situation like that, so I wonder if she's being blackmailed--maybe by her cousin. I could maybe see her trusting John enough to meet him, but I already checked and it's not his car. I'm pretty sure that John and Ji-wan will end up together (the official network even tweeted a video of them saying that they support them as a couple), but not knowing for 100% certain is stressing me out. I did rewatch the flash forward from ep 1 and they look WAY too happy for either of them to be marrying someone else. I really hope they are gonna do something with John's interview where he says that, when he falls for someone, he goes nuts. They had to have included it for a reason, right?

I feel like Chae-ri may end up with the General. They portrayed her too sympathetically and showed her reactions to his choosing Soo-mi for a reason. They actually are a good match and it was cute when he actually made her laugh. I feel like if he brought her on a date to his gym and just worked out in front of her, she wouldn't be upset.

I am so sick of Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon. I don't know exactly to explain how the drama sabotaged them so much, maybe because it doesn't seem like YR is actually that into him? I skipped most of their scenes this ep.

Finally, I can't stop thinking about how BORING the reality show would be in real life. People pretty much picked someone and stayed with them the entire time. At least season 1 of the show had a catfight, lol. I feel like So-yeon is better off; none of the women on the show really had a guy genuinely interested them, with the exception of Soo-mi and Ji-wan (and the latter he's interested but not making a move).

I guess Chae-ri and the General sort of match in that "i pulled myself up through grit" sort of way, but the general accepting to just sleep with the PD of a show he's on while he was romancing another woman on screen felt like he was devoid of that self-discipline and hard work he was proud of. Like I would have expected it of that guy with the poor vocabulary.

Yeah season 2 of kingdom love did not seem all that exciting with the cast just paired off from the very beginning. For these types of shows, you gotta get the cast having intimate (doesn't have to be sex) moments with multiple people.

Welcome to the comments section👋 It’s good to have you in here and I hope that you find it’s a fun place to be.

Re the preview we have all learnt the hard way from being caught out by too many dramas that what you see in the edited to raise interest preview and what they actually show in the subsequent episode is often very different. With this drama I literally have no idea what they will do with the scene you mentioned.

I don’t get why any of the original cast would come back to the show for a special episode so for all of them to be there they must have paid them to do it. As we saw the reactions of the general public are rarely pleasant, even if they are on your side, it’s so inconsistent so having gone back to real life and seen it’s impact on their work and personal life you would assume they would have wanted to walk away from the experience for good to get back to normal asap.

I can not work out which real couple would want to have their special day associated with a programme like that. YouTube woman and the app guy are the only ones who would genuinely believe it would be a benefit to them but I can’t see them making a go of a relationship. Your match of Chaeri and the General is the only other couple who it would make perfect sense for them to use the show as vehicle for a spin off to their version of the Kardashian’s🤣

Oh, yes, I have learned that about previews! It's Beautiful Now had a preview almost every week where it looked like a character got horribly injured or killed, lol.

I agree with you that it would be weird for any of the couples to want a reality show wedding unless it's just for show or they're fame hungry. I actually am wondering if it's Chae-ri and the General. The flash forward hints that it's a couple from the reality show, but you know they like to mislead us.

This show isn't very good, and yet, I find it compulsively watchable. I have no idea why this is exactly.

A few random thoughts.

First, I've been enjoying Ji Wan and Joon as much as everyone else, but I was so confused by Ji Wan's acceptance of the fraudster dude. I thought that after he pushed her in front of a knife wielding maniac to protect himself that she realized once and for all that he didn't actually care about her and was only using her to gain sympathy and fame for himself. I also wasn't clear why fraudster dude is still pursuing her after the show ends, either--he appears to walk off with her as if they're actually going to date. Why? Hasn't she served her purpose for him? The writing really didn't add up there.

And Joon not confessing in the final scenes of the reality show was such a wasted opportunity. I couldn't understand his motivations, either. Does he think Ji Wan doesn't like him and prefers fraudster guy? Or is he still grappling with the idea of dating a woman who is not ultra a skinny and plastic surgery enhanced? Their plaintive staring at each other was mind boggling and such a wasted opportunity. The story here practically writes itself! Why are the writers ignoring it?

Unlike some others, I don't find Jae-hoon to be trash. He was always honest with Ji-yeon, treated her with more grace and kindness than I think she deserved, and even did his best to try and reciprocate her feelings, which obviously was a waste of time and perhaps patronizing as well, but it made her happy. He has also been loving and supportive towards Yeo-reum. He did wait too long to tell her how he felt, but he saw her happy with her old boyfriend and didn't try to get in the way of that. And when she was free of that boyfriend, he learned from his mistake by being honest with her about his feelings right away. When she said she didn't reciprocate, he accepted it and remained her friend. He wasn't angry or petty or manipulative at all.

Now that they're together, I thought his declaration of complete and total commitment and love was sincere and sweet. I'm glad they're a couple, and they have chemistry. It just took the show too long--and we wasted too much time wallowing with a very bland Ji-yeon as pseudo-obstacle--for those scenes to land as romantically as they should have.

I wish the show had chosen to humanize Chae-ri a little earlier by giving us at least a hint of that tragic backstory before we were thrust into the Kingdom. As someone who has never cared for her, that would have made what happened in these last two episodes so much more interesting for me, while also making her previous extreme actions (capitalizing on Ji Wan's abuse confession, throwing things at Sang-eon, and declaring to Yeo-reum that the show was failing because Yeo-reum is supposedly cursed) less alienating. I will give the writers credit for the twist of having her sleep with gym owner dude. They actually had chemistry and...

. . . and Chae-ri seeking solace in casual sex made sense to me. But the timing of it was hard for me to buy, as was the fact that Chae-ri didn't double-check that the cameras remained covered. The show was about to wrap up, so why couldn't the emotionally stressed but still ambitious PD wait to solicit gym owner until a day or two later? It's not like she wouldn't have been able to locate him then. Even in emotionally distress and with her many flaws, she's a focused enough PD that I didn't buy that she would make that decision at that time.

It almost doesn't seem worth mentioning the bipolar woman having a public breakdown, and that's because it's so clear the show doesn't seem bipolar disorder or eating disorders for that matter as worth exploring in any significant way. So they should have left both issues untouched.

I think Ji-wan accepted Joon-ho only for appearance's sake. John felt bad about the kiss, so, if he had any nerve to make a move, her accepting Joon-ho killed it. I personally don't think Ji-wan had any expectations for John, hence why she only asked him for 30 min. I think she just wanted one date with him before the show ended and that satisfied her, at least she thought it would until she saw him almost kiss Tae-mi.

I think she did it to underline to JJ that he lost his chance. After all, he tore after her to return her phone after she caught him too close to Tae-Mi, so she knows he isn't indifferent and was trying to find a way to smooth it all over. She may be genuine and honest but she hasn't spent all this time with conniving vixens without learning something. That was the first time JJ went after her instead of the other way round. She's just getting into her stride now. Coming next week, JJ with holes in the knees of his jeans as he pursues her grovelling and bearing cakes. Ji-wan taking a bite and moving away, dropping the cake carelessly on the grass ... there's a twinkle in her eye now and John loves it. Cue YR looking on mystified as she learns a thing or two from someone who never even had a boyfriend.

4

"Why did Ji Wan accept the cake?"

Because he offered it to her. If she squints her eyes and tilts her head to the left, she can convince herself that he really likes her in the right way, and they can really work out. She's in love with love, and right now this guy standing in front of her with a cake is the safe option. John/Joon makes her excited, makes her head spin, but she has no concrete action on his part to use to convince herself she has a chance. She really doesn't think she measures up to a guy like John/Joon. So... she'll take love/affection where she feels like she can get it, and ignore all of the flashing neon signs saying "not this loser!"

It'll be up to John/Joon to approach her, she isn't able to stand up for herself and demand his attention.

@vienibenmio: No one deserved it more than that manipulative and patronising charlatan.

The Chef and Ji-wan pairing has me squealing. Their longing chemistry is just *chef's kiss*. I was bummed that they didn't box the leftover cake. She only had 2 bites!

Ji-wan: I don't think I could have been accepted a relationship with someone who shoved me towards an attempted murderer in order to save himself. Even a fake one.

There needs to be more oversight over this production - can't believe smashing cake into the person you're rejecting's face was an acceptable idea. It seemed almost farcical. I feel like this drama could have taken it more into that farce route and also touch on the serious issues behind reality tv, but it seems to hold back and flounder.

The drama really could have done more with the other Kingdom Love characters. They have different and interesting backgrounds. Make it an ensemble drama.

I like how this drama does touch upon the fakeness of these reality love shows, though in a shallow way. None of the final selection pairings had a chance of succeeding post-show (and it was obvious to the production) and all the guys' cake proposal/selections were insincere. All were there just to finish the job. But it is weird that no one thinks about what happens after the filming. Like millions of people would have watched you on tv saying one thing. You may have fans come up to you. And what are you going to say? "Oh, that was fake. We never spoke after the day we all left." And then the fan would be like "okie dokes!" and then that'll be that?

Weird that they depict none of the girls as owning cars. I feel like Soomi - the lawyer and Tae-mi, the weather newscaster could definitely have their own nice cars.

I am going to vent - I mean expand - on the 'sigh' above, lol! I can't believe I am still watching this. Full admission, dating reality shows just aren't my thing, but for some unknown reason I keep watching (I know, I know).

Things that made me want to use those mattresses as a trampoline:
- can't Chae-ri just be a bad-ass unethical meanie who is good at her job without having to stick her with a traumatic background?
- yeah, no sympathy for our mopey false love. I mean, who goes on a tv show thinking they were really going to find love? All the other players played their proper roles at the final selection and you knew they weren't feeling it. The cake-face smash just made her look more pathetic.
- I am a little surprised they didn't use the final selection to generate some much-needed drama, it would have been very kdrama-like. I would have had the chef give the cake to the webtoon artist, all on his own without her hurting inviting eyes, and the gym guy give the cake to Chae-ri - which would have left at least 2 of the most obnoxious characters in the cold. And I would have figured a way for the ever-rejected balcony woman to stick it to all the others in a most fun and ferocious way - as advised by Chae-ri (I am sure Chae-ri can come up with a much better plan than I ever could).
- what about the exploitative way the drama introduces and handles multiple serious issues. There's the webtoon artists childhood trauma, but what about the bulimia of the chef's 'lady' and the depression of the balcony lady. (shaking my head)

This is going into my bucket of 'dramas that might have been' along with Dr. Stranger -- so much potential that never happened.

Yeah, you'd think Chae-ri would have been thrilled about John and Ji-wan. I guess because she has bias against Ji-wan.

I agree with you about their halfhazard and frankly offensive depiction of mental illness. As much as I ship John and Ji-wan, Tae-mi hasn't really done anything wrong. I ship her with eating disorder treatment. And the bipolar thing was SO unnecessary. So-yeon could have gotten drunk and done the same thing without having that diagnosis.

Yeah, I also think Chae-ri would have jumped on the potential for such a plot twist and figured some sketchy unethical way to promote it! You know, the more I think about it, having Chae-ri as the foil (not sure if that is the right word) promoting unexpected twists would have been far more entertaining, especially if they could have pulled it off in funny and endearing ways. The show takes itself too seriously.

As for Tae-mi, I guess it is true she hasn't exactly done anything wrong, but she hasn't exactly done anything endearing either - eating disorder aside.

Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon don't seem like a couple at all. Especially with Yeo-reum, I kept expecting her to back down in the next minute and say that it was all a mistake.

I could have done without all the repetition from a different angle. Instead, the time should have been used to develop the relationship between Chef John and Ji-wan. Only these two interest me now, the rest of the series is extremely boring by this point.

i was so loving this drama at the beginning, but not so much now. the whole kingdom of love reality show didn't seem to explore different relationships as much as i thought it would. our male lead only dated the woman he had a blind date with prior to the show. he nor she ever explored other possibilities, which would have made the drama meatier. I'm disappointed. & then with the unedited version being viewed it kind of fit as a production that wasn't at the top of it's game.

Ok, I had to create a profile too to talk about how lovely the romance with John Jang and Jiwan is. I cannot get enough! Honestly I couldn't be more surprised than anyone following his behaviour in the first episodes how a storyline involving him has become the reason I'm watching this now but there you go!

Jiwan is the sweetest character, genuine, kind, caring, really cute and warm to others, I'm falling in love with her for goodness sake! The way she goes after what she wants by handing a date voucher was amazing too but my heart broke when she confessed she was worried John Jang wouldn't want to invest his time in her. Saying every minute was precious on the last date as though her time wasn't worth his, whereas you could see both of them, not only her, on that date was desperate for every minute to last longer. I thought both their acting was really great, the longing looks, you can really feel the tension between them, so good! The care he put intI that dish for her. I so wanted him to stop her when she came back for her phone but if the John Jang redemption arc has taught me anything so far, I'm hoping for great moments this week!!

Also, just got to mention the episode where they went to visit his mother and we saw different parts of his character brought out by the loveliness of Jiwan. Him comfortable enough to be less pretentious, be truthful, laugh at himself, show his background. The script between them was beaut. Jiwan is so lovely to his mother, just feels like any one around her would warm to her and open up around her. The romance is being built so well with them. I ship them hard! Come on episode 15 and 16, do not disappoint please! Can we just have two hours of them?!

I foresee their future, him testing his recipes on her whilst she draws in her study. Her lines were so lovely talking about the food. Also the sunset lighting by the sea and they were walking and talking. Really nicely shot! Feels like these two just got loads of the best bits of this show. Also she has a great voice right?!

To border on redundant, this writer/pd team is in way over their heads. The first 30 minutes of episode 14 was literally a recap of the last 20 minutes of episode 13! It wasn't told from a different perspective nor offered new insight. It was just a lazy way out of creating meaningful content. Let's collectively agree not to waste any further brain power on this drama. The writers are not trying to make some commentary on reality tv or any other grand statement. This is not the drama to engage into some large philosophical discussion about. This drama doesn't deserve it or warrant it. The writer/pd long ago relinquished the wheel to the cast and are praying the actors can make something out of nothing here. So much potential just gone.
