Park Hyung-shik is a lonely prince in Our Blooming Youth

tvN’s upcoming historical fiction Our Blooming Youth has just released its script reading stills, showcasing its five central characters. Billed as both a romance and a mystery thriller, the drama promises to tell the tale of a fateful love.

Park Hyung-shik (Soundtrack #1) stars as the Crown Prince Lee Hwan, who’s afflicted with a mysterious curse. That’s presumably the reason for his cynical and standoffish demeanor, since he’s described as harboring darkness deep in his heart.

At the heart of another mystery is Jeon So-ni (Dr. Brain), who plays the intelligent noblewoman Min Jae-yi. Her life is upended one day when she’s accused of murder — and not just any murder, but the massacre of her entire family. Those murders occur just four days before her engagement to Han Sung-on — played by Yoon Jong-seok (Crime Puzzle) — who’s also Hwan’s close companion. In order to get to the bottom of this case, Jae-yi teams up with her best friend Ga-ram, played by Pyo Ye-jin (Taxi Driver).

While investigating, their paths will cross with Kim Myung-jin, played by Lee Tae-seon (Next Door Witch J). Nicknamed as Joseon’s number one nerd, he dreams of becoming the country’s first coroner. It sounds like an intriguing setup so far, and I’m looking forward to more promos so we can get a better sense of the drama’s tone.

Directed by Lee Jong-jae (Psychopath Diary) and Kim Jeong-wook, with scripts penned by Jung Hyun-jeong (Lovestruck in the City), Our Blooming Youth is slated to premiere on February 6.

“Park

"Our Blooming Youth" does not seem like a fitting title for this. On multiple fronts. Happy to see Jeon So Nee though, she's shown promise in the smaller roles she's had so far, nice to see her as lead.

I thought the same when seeing that title. Maybe they will change it before debut! Or at least explain why.

Almost anticlimactic at this point. I don’t understand why the producers didn’t go with THE GOLDEN HAIRPIN as a title which is the title of the Chinese historical mystery novel from 2018 by Qinghan CeCe on which this drama is based. The Chinese television dramatization of this novel was jinxed by the Kris Wu scandal since he was a ML. My understanding is a 60 episode Cdrama was produced and ready to air in 2021 and then was shelved.
When I got word somehow that a Korean version was in the works I ordered the kindle version of the novel which is available in English in March of 2021. I read the novel and enjoyed it. It is set up for a sequel.
I think Park Hyung-sik is perfect casting for the Prince. MDL reports that OUR BLOOMING YOUTH will have 20 episodes. I hope it will be available on a legal stream in the US.

This show isn't using title The Golden Hairpin for a very simple reason that it is not said novel's adaptation anymore - officially, at least. It was the original plan, but then Joseon Exorcist mess happened and in light of "we don't need more China influence in our kdramas" strong sentiment that it caused the idea of a direct adaptation was scrapped once and for all. Drama got delayed for almost a year (PHS was supposed to film this BEFORE Happiness) while writer hurriedly worked on "completely original script" that only kept TGH's basic premise (cursed crown prince teaming up with framed for family murder female lead and romance between them). Current english title is also not yet confirmed (it isn't on the first poster at least) and korean one roughly translates to "Youth Moon Talk" or something vaguely poetic. Still a HUGE improvement over "Youth Climb The Barrier" nonsense that poor thing was labelled as during its filming period.
Oh, and The Golden Hairpin cdrama is apparently being re-shot with intention to CGI new male lead's face into already filmed footage, final fate remains unknown. One might think that this IP is cursed indeed...

Finally delurking after so many years and now I fully get how tricky it is to post something here given the lack of edit button. Or length limit. I can already picture all the endless trouble I'll have with the latter^^

Thanks for this very interesting information, and welcome! Don’t worry, no one here holds misspelling or typing mistakes against you (I insist they are all possessed spellchecks anyway).

Welcome aboard @gikata. I am glad this got you to delurk. If this thing actually airs it will be a minor miracle.
I didn’t want to get into the whole JOSEON EXORCIST debacle influence on the timing of this project because it is confusing enough lol.
Minor point. Fwir in the novel the prince is not crowned prince and lived outside the palace. He had a slew of brothers. He could operate easier living outside the palace. Of course I may have it all wrong or in this drama he is a crowned prince. We will just have to wait and see.

Thank you)))
Well, original takes place in China where there were usually more princes in every generation compared to Joseon (for variety of reasons, but mainly due to much bigger size of royal harem), so slew of brothers isn't surprising at all. To think of it, I personally can't recall any historical cdrama or novel that had only 1 prince - even if current emperor lacked many sons, there were always some brothers/uncles/nephews/whatever to make family tree and battle for the throne livelier.
Here male lead totally IS crown prince though - synopsis aside (those can NEVER be fully trusted!), hanbok he wears in the poster and few leaked stills 100% gives this detail away.

I don't know anything about The Golden Hairpin but the "CGIing the male lead's new face on" made me think, "Wow, why would they go to that much trouble? Unless he was like Kris Wu or something lmao" and I googled it and IT WAS KRIS WU that's darkly hilarious. 😭 I legit forgot he ever had an acting career, if you could even call it that.

Apparently this method of getting cancelled project back from limbo is not exactly new to c-entertainment, though the additional cost and effort usually end up so sky-high that not many dare to really do it. This particular one is most likely still not fully dead only because source material is a popular series with multiple books, so producers hope to get their money back from adapting sequels.

Welcome to the joys of the comments section 😊 There are definitely more positives than negatives. Thanks so much for sharing the background info.

Some people compose longer posts offline so they can cut and paste the missing elements into the reply if it turns out it’s gone over the character count.

Hmm, I'll try this method too. Along with saving a copy before posting for lazy days.

What a ride! Thanks for posting. I had to google this, because what could he have done? And yikes. Rapper, singer, actor, model aaaand holy shit, what a scumbag. Wouldn't want to be in the shoes of everyone else that worked on the drama.

The promotion is weird. I don't understand why they released the names of the actors last week like it was a new information and when the drama will be aired the next Month.

Probably because it was in development hell for 2+ years with little to no public updates so people actually need to be reminded of this drama's existence and all the details about it.

They could have given something more interesting... The news of the actors, then the poster with the date and the video of the script reading. The script reading could have been enough.

Well, the ridiculous secretiveness around its filming WAS interesting... until it caused many potential viewers a bad case of selective amnesia.
tvN overall is very uneven in promoting their dramas. Some get every coverage possible and then some more while others... *sigh*

This sounds so good and I love the cast members, especially Park Hyung-shik.

Should be exciting! PHS hasn’t played what sounds like tsundere character before. However I agree that TVN annoyingly does uneven promotions so hard to gauge if they will bother to promote more or leave us hanging until the premier. Anxiously awaiting it!
