Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist teases Season 2 coming this January

Like it or not, tvN’s Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist took a “hang on we’ll be back for Season 2” approach to its ending a few months back, befuddling many a viewer. Now, however, Season 2 is just around the corner, and tvN has released a cute teaser to get you excited to return to the beloved village clinic.

Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist 2 stars Kim Min-jae, Kim Hyang-gi, and Kim Sang-kyung — along with the rest of the cast who are reprising their roles from Season 1. Indeed, the readiness level of this “season” makes me think that it was already filmed as a continuous drama, and that the creating of this seasonal break was more of a broadcasting decision than a thematic break that was required by the story itself.

This sense of seasons or dramas being split into parts “just because” has definitely been in the air lately. And I’m not gonna lie — I hope it’s unsuccessful, and that broadcasters find themselves recommitting to the one-and-done drama format where a show airs from beginning to end in a continuous fashion. You know, like the drama gods intended.

But back to Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist 2, the recent teaser is really just a little peek into the continuing world of the drama — we see flashes of our favorite found family and clinicians being their cute selves, and our hero himself introduces the drama’s premiere date. There’s not much else to say except: let the cuteness continue! (And end properly this time.)

The second season of Poong will be 10 episodes, and has migrated to the Wednesday-Thursday slot, premiering on January 11 on tvN.

Unfortunately, because they decided the season 2 aspect, it dragged the first season. So I am one and done on that. Kdramas can do seasonal dramas, but they need to figure out the formula first, they have not done that yet. So I too hope they fail, 🧐🫣.

Kafiyah Bello: I know the multi-season format appears to be heavily disliked but apart from the nostalgic value of the one season format and its relatively quick payoff, the multi-season format might be better for all of the people who are involved as it might be less stressful, more flexible, hopefully allow for better script development and casting down the line and allow for some breathing space for the viewers too so they can reflect, enjoy and look forward to seeing the programs again. Of course, like any new format, there will be hiccups.

If I was actually involved in the production of television, I'd want multiple seasons as well. it's better for the actors, the writers, the producers.

But as a viewer, I personally got tired of especially US networks greenlighting 50 season 1s, ending on a cliffhanger and then cancelling them. Or dragging things out for 8 seasons when the story didn't justify it. One and done was a big draw of kdramas - even if most of the time the endings were poor.

@leetennant: I completely agree with you and I get the ‘one and done’ model’s attraction. To green-light multiple seasons without a justifiable artistic or at at least a modicum of one is just commercially expedient and mercenary, and, clearly sucks big time for the viewers.

I am sure you are correct, but that requires the first season to have good writing, but because the writer had room for season 2, the writer didn't bother to do a well written season 1. Obviously, this is specific to this case. I love a multi seasonal format, I am an American and that is my favorite way to watch a TV show, it is what I am used to. In order for me to enjoy that in a kdrama, I need season 1 to be good enough to warrant season 2, unfortunately for Poong it was not.

The trailer looks like it’s not got any palace politics in it. That’s how they sold me on the first series so this time I am prepared but hoping they tie it up fast so the rest is on the romance and different cases.

Unpopular opinion: I don't mind multiple seasons if the story or world building will benefit from it. It's just in the case of Poong, it didn't feel like that needed a second season since it could've just ended with the happy ending of everyone back at the clinic.

I guess the writer and powers that be behind the scenes really wanted these characters to deal more with palace and all that stuff associated with it.

If you look at how British networks approach this, they greenlight the number of seasons needed to tell the story and then the show usually gets that number of seasons. Or they round the season out nicely so if there's no more story then it doesn't matter.

Having said that, a few years ago British networks went through a stage of cancelling ongoing shows like US networks do. It was just as frustrating.

I enjoyed it mostly because of Kim Min-jae and the "found" family. I totally agree with @missvictrix on the multiple seasons format and hope it is not for the future of Korean dramas. That said, I will watch this since it is done and in the works. And yes to more of Kim Min-jae!

If I enjoy the drama, I like having a 2nd season. Of course, a number of dramas I could choke through the 1st season ended up with a 2nd. Looking forward to this. Still waiting for Season 2 of Signal, sigh...

Kim Minjae has one of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard. I’m not exaggerating. As a viewer, one realises what a gift that is as so many actors including Korean actors are not genetically blessed to sound half as good as him. That’s all.

I hope multi-season kdramas are a rare thing.

With the first season being 12 episodes and the second being 10 episodes, I wonder why they didn't just save it all up to air as one season. It's not like there were going to be any shocking spoilers where if they take a few months break in filming, the spoilers would get out before airing (like with Alchemy of Souls..which I also wished would just have aired continuously instead of this weird break).

We've had single season dramas that are 24 hour-long episodes long.

I hope the second season has no palace drama. Please just stick with slice of life stories! Looking for something more procedural.
