Unlock the Boss: Episodes 9-10

This week packs quite the emotional punch (in more ways than one!). As our team inches closer to the truth, they’re also drawing closer to each other — but their enemies are closing in, too, and will stop at nothing to get what they want.

Unlock the Boss: Episodes 9-10

In-sung, Se-yeon, and Ma-pi race into the hospital where Sun-joo’s unconscious body is being kept. They have to fight their way past the staff, giving Wi-je just enough time to get Sun-joo out and into the back of an ambulance. Our team stays hot on their heels nevertheless, following the GPS signal from Sun-joo’s phone.

But when they catch up to the ambulance, there’s a different patient inside — Wi-je was smart enough to leave Sun-joo’s phone in a decoy ambulance and whisk Sun-joo away elsewhere. Still, it’s not a total loss. Now they know Sun-joo’s body is still alive, and they have a few clues to follow up on.

Unlock the Boss: Episodes 9-10

For one, Ma-pi and Se-yeon return to the hospital the next day to try and demand answers about Sun-joo’s whereabouts. When that unsurprisingly doesn’t work, Ma-pi causes a scene, allowing Se-yeon to swipe the hospital director’s lanyard without anyone noticing. Turns out, he lost his license a few years back for medical malpractice tied to the death of none other than Mi-ran’s younger brother.

That’s doubly fascinating paired with the flashback we get from Mi-ran’s perspective. She was passed up to inherit Bumyoung from her father in favor of said brother. Instead, Mi-ran was given management of Bumyoung’s baseball team (which explains her penchant for using baseball analogies to intimidate people), and she looked suspiciously unaffected to hear of her brother’s untimely death.

Now Mi-ran makes another patient disappear — Se-yeon’s mom. She’s done this enough times before that it’s a clear threat: if Se-yeon doesn’t do what Mi-ran wants, her mom might just “disappear” for good this time. And what does she want? A copy of BARO 4.0. And now Se-yeon is desperate enough to give it to her.

Just as Se-yeon finishes copying the files, In-sung and Ma-pi arrive, ready to set their next plan into motion. No matter how excited In-sung is to cause more trouble (his words, not mine), he can tell instantly that Se-yeon is distressed. He doesn’t push for her to talk about it, just lets her know she can come to him about anything and he’ll listen, and she finally breaks. With no preamble whatsoever, she blurts out the whole story and asks for help.

When Se-yeon goes to meet Mi-ran as promised, she brings information instead of BARO 4.0: Sun-joo is still alive (which they both know isn’t news to Mi-ran), and In-sung is meeting with Young-geun right now. If Mi-ran wants to block the deal those two are making, she’d better let them have Sun-joo back.

Unlock the Boss: Episodes 9-10

In the meantime, Ma-pi tracks down Se-yeon’s mother. In-sung moves her into a hospital where his parents can easily drop in to check on her, and Se-yeon is so overwhelmed with gratitude for them all that she runs outside in tears. In-sung lets her have some time alone before following and offering 1) his handkerchief, 2) the talisman his mother bought from a scammy shaman (In-sung wasn’t interested, but Sun-joo thought the exorcism was worth a shot), and 3) a hug.

After crying in his arms for a few moments, Se-yeon pulls back just enough to reorient and go straight in for a kiss. It’s quite a kiss, but we don’t get to see exactly how long it lasts because In-sung’s mom pulls his dad (and us) away to give them privacy.

Unlock the Boss: Episodes 9-10

They’re both giddily shy about it the next day, to the point Sun-joo thinks they’ve had a fight since they don’t seem to be speaking to each other. But they don’t get much time to soak in the bliss yet, because they’ve still got work to do.

Remember that deal In-sung made with Young-geun? Before his disappearance, Sun-joo discovered a fatal bug in BARO 4.0 that caused it to disregard commands and stubbornly make its own judgments — not something you want a self-driving car to do. Together, In-sung and Sun-joo piece together what happened next: Sun-joo meant to alert both Mi-ran and Young-geun, concerned only for the integrity of his project. But no way would Mi-ran let that info get to Young-geun, so Sun-joo tried to send it to Young-geun by way of Sam-soo (whose loyalties were complicated, thus Young-geun only received the report after Sam-soo’s death).

After explaining the situation, In-sung proposes ousting Mi-ran from Bumyoung leadership. That way, Young-geun gets the chairman position he wants, and In-sung ensures Mi-ran can’t evade punishment for her crimes.

Unlock the Boss: Episodes 9-10

There’s just one problem: Young-geun knows Mi-ran’s dismissal won’t be a good look for Bumyoung Group. So he and Mi-ran work together for once to not only get her dismissal vetoed, but also to get In-sung dismissed instead. It happens so quickly, In-sung hardly has time to react before his face is plastered all over the media and he and his family are swarmed by reporters who twist everything he’s done at Silver Lining into the worst possible interpretations.

Just as quickly, people come out of the woodwork left and right to share how he’s shown them kindness and helped the company keep moving forward. It’s truly moving to watch all the people he’s helped now help lift him out of despair and get him reinstated as CEO.

Sadly, all these wins come at a price. Ma-pi, determined not to let Min-ah turn out like him, pounds the pavement tirelessly until he finds Sun-joo. He takes Sun-joo to his boxing gym, but In-sung and Se-yeon aren’t picking up their phones, and the gym is swarming with Wi-je’s thugs.

Shots of In-sung being showered in flowers and applause are chillingly juxtaposed with shots of Ma-pi putting up the fight of his life to keep Wi-je from stealing Sun-joo back… and failing. By the time In-sung and Se-yeon arrive at the gym, it’s empty except for Ma-pi’s lifeless form crumpled in a corner of the ring.

Unlock the Boss: Episodes 9-10

I was all set to talk about how much I enjoyed Ma-pi’s growth this week — from practicing smiles to being Min-ah’s doting “Uncle Mafia,” but now I’m just sad and crossing my fingers on the off chance he might still be alive. I was really hoping In-sung and Se-yeon would be able to save him like he saved them, but giving his life to try and bring Min-ah’s dad back to her is in keeping with the journey he’s been taking the past several episodes, too, as much as I hate to admit it.

On a lighter note, though, every time I think In-sung can’t possibly make me fall more in love with him, he does exactly that. After all the setbacks he’s suffered personally and professionally just for being a genuinely good person, it was so gratifying to see him get some of that goodness returned. While I’ll miss him terribly when this show is over, I also look forward to watching him and Se-yeon ride off into the well-deserved sunset to chase their new dreams together.

@mistyisles thank you for the weecap.

It was a mixed feast this week of bringing the funny back and then it became so sad. The new theory; I have to concede the niece and uncle are both a nightmare and the voice in the phone is Bora 4 taking over just as Seonjoo said it would if the creator didn’t rein it back. There were a couple of times it was if the voice was talking about someone else rather than himself but that may just be coincidence or translation. Because it’s on Viki I don’t think it’s a translation issue.

Mapi is like a dog with a bone he found the run away girl, he found the guy. He was a one man show but this time acting for the good of others rather than himself. I don’t get how the doctor who was so inept was able to untie himself to access a phone and get help to get out of the locked room. It was good the others didn’t get the message until after it was done or all three would have died.

So is Wije a double agent? He reports to the niece and is also the uncle’s closest confidant. How did Miran find him just before he was about to kill himself? Has she been a sleeper ever since her dad chose her brother over her? is her dad’s illness something she planned just like Seonjoo in which case it can backfire at any time as it did not look like the dad’s death was timed as she would have wanted.

Final theory Seonjoo will die or be incapacitated so the company will stay with Insung and Seyeon and they will marry and adopt Mina. His friend Hyunho will either get rich from shares or get a job in the company and it will become a company that gives newbies a chance to get on the career ladder and thus encourage innovation. Not sure how they will get rid of the Bumyoung group maybe double agent will do something as he knows the full picture of the corruption. Bora 4 will live on in a more advanced version of the robot that his parents love and will be an assistant that helps disabled or elderly people a bit like in My Holo Love where he became a friend.

About the doctor escaping, that will be explained next week from previews. The housekeeper and butler's shady lurking will finally be put to light and we will know where their loyalties lie.
For a rich tech guy, Sung joo really had no one except his daughter by his side. That life must be tiring.

So true and so sad he had to rely on people he paid and he couldn't even trust them.

The drama became way too serious! How can they think to kill Ma-Pi?!?

I'm surprised that Kim Sung-Oh didn't become more famous. He's pretty versatile and has beautiful eyes!

I really hope Mapi isn't dead. I can't imagine the show without him.

Baro 4.0 is definitely acting as Sung joo. They have indirectly explained it.
Mapi should please still be alive. Put him in a coma for a few days but let him stay alive to see Min ah happy.

Yes she will be gutted if Uncle Mafia has left without saying goodbye too.
There are a few of us confidence now that Baro 4 is in the phone with the shady explanation to justify its existence. Maybe it was set up to kick in if Sunjoo did not log in after a certain amount of time.

I'll be gutted if Mapi is taken away from us at this stage, he's such a great character, I want him to be there for Min Ah to the end and get the found family he needs for himself too. It really went dark at the end, I wasn't expecting it to go quite as extreme (for me) as that.
In Sung is a delight, I hope we get some time later for the romance to tick up a bit as it's clear why it needs to take a back seat at the moment. I'll be looking out for the actor's name in future shows.
Finally, it was a relief to see Se Yeon 'fess up and trust the others enough to let them help her. I loved that scene.

I also loved the fact that Se Yeon reached out for help instead of feeling like she had to figure it all out on her own. This is why I think Ma Pi will be fine - he will learn this lesson too (although he must feel betrayed by the information leak). I need his full arc to involve learning to trust others and no longer defaulting to lone wolf mode.🤞

If the nanny is the leak, I’m going to be sad about that. It seemed like she had come round to Ma Pi (I thought because of his relationship with Min Ah), but if that was all a ploy to earn his trust and betray him, I will be 🤬. It would also mean Sun Joo really had no one trustworthy around him, not even to care for his daughter.💔

My question is what is the nanny actually doing because there were so many adults in the house with CCTV and yet the girl left without anyone knowing and not knowing where to start looking for her.

And she didn’t even leave in the middle of the night! The fact that it was Ma Pi who found her speaks volumes.

Exactly we see Insung playing with her, and Mapi monitoring her when she was upset, Seyeon putting her to bed and the nanny cooking or going out randomly. Maybe she has a sob story of something being held as a threat like a hospital/school bill for a relative. We know people have been monitoring the house for a while so she could have been called in with threats at any time.

I agree about Se-yeon, I loved the growth we saw from her this week as she told the team what had been going on and opened up to In-seong about why she tried to have such a cold demeanor for so long. I love this found family so much and I'm in denial about them getting split up like this!

Episode 10 is darker than I expected and the niece-uncle duo is really getting on my nerves. They need to be exposed and punished for their crimes.
I don't know if it is just me but I am sick and tired of chaebol succession fights. can't they just think of other ways to proceed with the plot?
As for Mapi, I won't be able to bear it if something were to happen to him. I mean his character growth arc is one of the most satisfying redemption arcs out there and it is done in a convincing way too. I want him alive for Min-ah's sake. I mean he has to see the fruit of his hard work when Min-ah meets her father again.
Hoping for a happy ending where In-seong and Se-yeon become a lovey-dovey couple and Min-ah lives happily with dad, uncle mafia, and the rest of the gang.

I know I am sick of seeing the Uncle doing gym work outs and barking orders. What does he actually do to help the family business grow? He put on such a show when his brother died it was a joke and yet he only goes around thinking the worst of people as if everyone is like him.

Isn't that how the world works. We project our habits on people because we see them as a mirror.
Think bad things of others because you feel they are doing the same. Harm others because you feel they will do the same.
Steal because you feel they will steal from you.
That's why succession and management rights fight is never far in a drama with a chaebol plot. That is their reality.

Ok, so I’m hoping this is a fakeout and Ma-pi will still pull through. I think it’s pretty unlikely, but I will dream until proven wrong. That scene was so powerful though, with the clips of In-seong’s triumphant return interspersed with Ma-pi’s desperate fight. It pulled on my heart so much. But Ma-pi definitely planted a GPS tracker on Seon-joo’s hospital bed, right? Like he did with Se-yeon’s mom? So they aren’t back at square one with finding him again, thank goodness.

One of my favorite things in this show has been watching In-seong make the compassionate decisions rather than the practical ones. He is so consistent, he pretty much can’t help it, even when it cost him his dream of becoming an actor, and even when he was on the verge of getting fired from his job with Seon-joo because he kept getting distracted by other peoples’ plights. I was happy with that as mere characterization, but it was beautiful to see all those people come out of the woodwork for him when he needed it. And it’s been lovely to watch Seon-joo recognize In-seong’s worth and gifts more and more with each episode. One of my favorite drama heroes I've seen in a while.

I forgot about the GPS tracker - fingers crossed you’re right!!!🤞 it gives me hope!

I’m with you about In Seong. It makes me so happy to see such a great male lead, who isn’t rude/cold-on-the-outside, softie-only-to-select people, with some kind of trauma in his past. He’s just a good (but not perfect) person! And Sun Joo has been able to learn from him. Ah, the relationships between the men on this show have been lovely to see.

I pretty much agree with every one of these comments above As far as the chaebol succession, I was really hoping that it would be presented as not just a power struggle, but as a debate between old and new technology. Now they both are just a pair of villains.

Of course, I really like the romance, and I hope it develops a bit more by the end.

I am particularly hoping that there will be a happy ending, though, with both the "phone" and In-sung teaching the boss that work is not worth neglecting his daughter, and that virtual reality and AI are only good as tools and not replacements.

Of course, that's the way I would write it, but I don't have a good track record in writing the ends of dramas I'm watching these days!

I agree with everyone else here - please let Mapi be ok so we won't have to see Minah heartbroken!!!

Aside from all main characters and the twists, I'm also really enjoying how the director/team made the phone a physical character to replace Park Sung Woong - ex: how the phone swivels around to look at who's talking when they're in their office or how the camera zooms in on the phone when it's watching Minah and feeling sad. I actually find myself feeling emotional about the phone sometimes.

This drama was such a pleasant surprise! I'll be really sad after it ends next week, and I find myself already wanting to rewatch it soon.

Yes, the idea of the phone checking out its surroundings when it was being held hostage was good too.

I have loved this show too. I will miss it but I am so glad they went for the shorter storyline so it didn’t need to get padded out.

I only decided to watch it knowing there would be thriller elements because I want to support the actor playing the male lead’s career. I have stayed for the story and the other characters. The story telling elements like the imagination scenes, his dad’s relationship with the robot version of Bora, Uncle Mafia being broken down so he could return to his human side and the whole how we relate to AI given the right context have all added unique elements to the standard Chaebols fight amongst themselves storyline.

I was not expecting to cry over this show. Between the daughter trying to get arrested or taken by police just so her father would have to find her and Mapi putting in that work to physically visit numerous locations, I was kinda beside myself by the time we got to that final scene of him being found in the corner of the ring.
I also got teary eyed when people stepped up to say what a good guy In Seong is and how he was affected by it. That whole sequence was so touching. It was so satisfying that he was reinstated like less than a week later.

I don't even know who the traitor is because who knew about the gym? I feel like the red herrings is the caretaker and the butler but weren't they watching the daughter, so how would they have had the time to follow Mapi or In Seong? Seems like they are the only two choices but it feels too blantant. I don't know.
In a weird plot twist, it could be the CEO somehow behind things. I have no idea how he would benefit from causing his daughter emotional distress or having his body in other people's hands but it just feels too obvious for it to be the caretaker or butler.

All I can think is the Bumyoung people are going entirely too far and I don't know what kind of comeuppence would be satisfying to me. They took a father away from his child over basically a time table. Eventually that bug could've possibly been fixed but no, can't possibly wait a year or two since lives would be on the line when there's shares and titles to earn now.

Oh! I'm so disgusted with rich people now.

I kinda feel like I just want a drama where people just eat the rich. Maybe in the vein of Leverage or Trading Places (Trading Places might be a weird addition but I was thinking about the part where the guys who were screwed over joined forces to bring down the rich guys who played with their lives & screwed them over). I don't even know but I'm just so sick of rich people treating every one else as if they are disposible or pieces that's to be moved according to their whims.
