Drama viewership ratings for the week of April 17-23, 2023

Woo hoo, Doctor Cha takes a leap to double digits already (only in its second week!), and Oasis reaches almost 8% in its penultimate week.

In contrast, Family hit way smaller numbers than I was expecting… but I can also say that for Pandora and Joseon Attorney for the length of their run.

Either way, all is set to change when SBS returns to take over their Friday-Saturday slot once again with Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3.

Dr Cha is so much better than I expected and I'm laughing a lot and enjoying every second 🙂

I'm also enjoying the family makjang The Real Has Come and it seems the ratings begin to climb.

JTBC pulling in the numbers. Dr. Cha deserves the ratings though. I want it to maintain it or it soars higher.

Bora! Deborah deserves more love than it's getting.

Dr.Cha absolutely deserves this.
I hope it can sustain this humor. I feel fairly confident given what I have seen so far.

I won’t be watching Romantic Doctor coz Disney.

Hope Good Bad Mother is good. Looking forward to it.

So, Dr. Romantic will only be on Disney+, meaning US views are shut out? This is getting ridiculous. About 1/3 of the dramas I want to watch are not available in the US. What gives?

I think that when Disney acquired the STAR WARS franchise hey may have learned the wrong lessons and decided that it was more profitable to go to the Dark Side and become The Evil Empire.

My wife and I love Doctor Cha which truly deserves its ratings.

THE REAL HAS COME is getting realer and the ratings are climbing as a result.

For a romcom BORA! DEBORAH has been pretty bleak. Its ratings are a reflection of that.

Jumping as well on the Doctor Cha congratulatory train. Also wondering if audiences will be able to handle two medical dramas? Tho DC isn’t really about the medical stuff.

I also had a good feeling about DC after episode 4. Even tho it’s more than that, it’s actually checking more of my rom-com boxes than Bora. Now, I just don’t want to jinx it.

Poor Bora. I can’t believe its ratings are lower than Paper Moon. Wow. Tho, I think if PM was available subbed, it might have found a niche among beanies. (Yes, I’m gonna continue being one of the voices in the desert proselytizing for PM :)

The Real numbers are also improving tho I continue to have my doubts about its old school makjang approach. But I’m watching still…

Part of what is making THE REAL HAS COME work is that our two leads are developing a real working relationship before our eyes- which will naturally develop into a real marriage if it continues: the day will come when they look at each other and ask themselves "just why we are not married for real, anyway?"

So there is an organically natural progression happening here, accompanied by the fact that their very lies force them to make the decisions that push them together.

Add to this that the old fashioned makjang is leavened by considerable amounts of humor and you have a winning combination. Plus, there are at least two to maybe four side couple stories coming to provide both contrast and diversion from the central story.

I am not really surprised with Bora's poor ratings. No one wants their heroine to break into pieces over her catching a cheating boyfriend. Her losing self control and mourning for days over the breakup shows a weak character fully invested in a relationship and has no clue he was cheating her. As a dating coach, she appears clueless and naive and deluded not only herself but her fans that she knows everything about relationships. She was a Miss-Know-It-All who actually knows nothing and fooling herself and her fans. The trash truck scene may be humorous to some, but for adults IRL, the lovers' quarrels seems so silly and childish and unnecessary to the plot. Such a waste of time watching them argue as what is over is over as more words spoken cannot repair the damage done to their relationship.

I love Yoo Inna and she is a great actress, but her character in this drama is a very flawed character and I see nothing in future episodes that can help the drama's ratings be any better as interest in this drama has waned by a large margin.

Thank you for voicing out my feelings toward the FL character. From the opening scenes when Bora was being interviewed and photographed, she was just so unlikeable. And as you said, she seemed to be the Miss Know It All But Actually Knows Nothing At All, and it’s a crime preaching about something when you know absolutely nothing about it. It misleads people. I’m not particularly fond about deeply flawed leads because I done feel like rooting for them. The leads can be flawed, but if they are flawed to the point that I question myself as to why I need to continue watching for their growth, I don’t think I’ll do it. I want to stand by the leads that are worth rooting for.

The thing for me was if a listener had written a letter describing that very scene Bora witnessed she would have given a hysterical but on point way to make sense of the situation and start the painful journey of dealing with the trauma of realising that she had been living in fantasy land and in reality had wasted 3 years on a loser who was so disrespectful it was beyond belief. However, emotions have a way of removing our ability to think straight so this is where my disappointment really kicked in. Her friend and sister who know what her usual response would have been should have talked some sense into her when she was considering continuing with the relationship. The friend’s face said it all when Bora said that it was a relief that he had shown this side before the marriage as if he had revealed a poor wardrobe choice and a quick session with a stylist could have sorted it out. However, the friend said nothing and even if she was just letting Bora offload, at a later point she needed to come back to it.

How low must your self esteem be to accept the gaslighting about lack of trust and have him drop off the other woman and STILL be waiting for a phone call to start the process of repairing the joke of a relationship?

In the end the situation was resolved because overhearing the boyfriend’s conversation was the megaphone needed to point out what had been hiding in plain sight.
Break ups are no joke so her portrayal of the pain is real but the balance between realistic mourning and humour was off for me.

Honestly, I am sad for Joseon Attorney though. MBC has just been struggling to find that hit. I can’t help but feel if it aired on a different network (like JTBC or TVN), it might actually pull in better numbers. I just can’t help but be worried that when Dr Romantic 3 comes into that time slot, their ratings will drop drastically. As long as the whole thing gets to air and the main actors continue to get leading roles (ESPECIALLY dohwan, who totally is killing it), I’ll be happy.

It's weird. I think Joseon Attorney is well written, the leads are doing great, and the storylines are interesting, and yet . . . it's missing something for me and, I suspect others. There's just no sense of urgency about any of the stories or relationships, and I find my attention lagging a lot while watching even if I recognize it as an objectively well made drama.

I'm sad for JA too :( I won't pretend to know what goes on behind the scenes to determine time slots, but it seems foolhardy to put a little sageuk in direct competition with big dramas like Taxi Driver and Dr. Romantic. Seeing the ratings double as soon as Taxi Driver ended I can't help but wonder if it could've been hitting past 5% by now if it had more of a chance from the start.

They need something like The Red Sleeve, The King of Tears or Under the Queen's Umbrella. These saeguks bring in the numbers as they have the right conflict, political strive and yes....some tensions.

This seems right. Even Bloody Heart, which was very moody and slow-paced, pulled better ratings than the current crop of fusion sageuks. So why do we get so many of the latter, and so few of the former? 🤔

I feel bad for Bora. It's not a masterpiece--and I absolutely concede that it had a rocky, dark, and unconventional start--but it deserves a larger audience than it has right now. I do wonder if the trend in recent years (with the exception of "Crash Course") of romcoms getting low ratings will mean less of them going forward.

I couldn't get into Dr. Cha, but I guess I understand why it's popular at home.

Because they are senior or veterans that tend to deliver.

These ratings and Beanies' comments have convinced me to start Doctor Cha, but I didn't know that there was cheating! Kim Byung-chul and his homewrecker are irredeemable.

Joseon Attorney's 2% jump from last week shows what could have been had it not been competing against Taxi Driver 2 and Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3.

Apparently tvN is going to stop airing Wed-Thurs dramas after Stealer: The Treasure Keeper - https://www.soompi.com/article/1582637wpp/tvn-to-halt-airing-wednesday-thursday-dramas

Can't say I blame them. Other than the 2 seasons of Hospital Playlist, which aired on Thursdays only, they haven't had a proper hit in that time-slot since What's Wrong with Secretary Kim way back in 2018.
