Drama viewership ratings for the week of May 1-7, 2023

My Perfect Stranger wins the Monday-Tuesday battle, but when Queen of the Mask approaches the ratings level of the Jang Hyuk x Jang Nara drama? (Things that make you go hmmm).

Mid-week, Stealer continues to dip, The Good Bad Mother continues to rise, and Bora! Deborah gets a little boost from its ramping up loveline.

But it’s the weekend slot where all the action is: Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim 3 is still cranking at over 13%,  Doctor Cha climbs over 16%, and Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 had a juicy premiere, hitting 7%.

Dr Cha is on a roll! I really thought this weeks episodes were great. The pacing of the reveal was done well.
Looking forward to starting Nine tailed fox. Glad to see it’s off to a good start.

The Good Bad Mother is climbing slowly will be good to see if it gets into double figures as the acting is on point and the story intriguing even if we don't always like the characters.

Unlikable characters with great actors may work like "World of the Married." The rating will continue to rise, but not at the speed of WOtM.

My understanding is that World of the Married is the standout programme when it comes to ratings and used as a bench mark for all others and has yet to be beaten although Reborn rich came in a close second.

Understandable right?
What I was trying to say is that unappealing characters can still be captivating to viewers and contribute to high ratings.

It was aired during the lock down season, where almost everyone had to stay at home.

True, but other shows didn't get high ratings, so it's more than just Covid.
WotM follows a similar pattern to the popular show "Temptation of Wife" from 40% back in the day, using unsympathetic characters, infidelity, and revenge to create an addictive formula.

With lockdown lifted up, it frees people from staying at home and watch TV. Other than that Crash Landing On You and Sky Castle were among the first few dramas that secure 20% drg the lockdown

@peiyeelai

I agree that the Covid lockdown (March or April 2020) did contribute to the high ratings of WotM (March-May 2020), but it's important to note that it wasn't the only factor at play. The show was a remake of a popular British program and had all the qualities that the ajummas can't resist.

The first Covid case in Korea was reported in January 2020, yet Sky Castle had already concluded its run a year earlier in February 2019. Crash Landing wrapped up in February 2020, so it's clear that Covid wasn't solely responsible for the high ratings. These shows had an irresistible allure with talented actors.

JTBC is the master when creating series with deep, complex, yet unlikeable characters :

- World of Married come to mind, when you revenge cheating with another cheating.
- Misty showed a manipulative woman who is unafraid to stomp on others and twist the truth to achieve her career goals.
- Graceful Friends showed friendships among men who went great lengths, even murder to protect secrets;
- Sky Castle showed amoral husbands & wives who would do anything to protect their kids' school grades
- Reborn Rich present us a morally ambiguous yet deeply affecting chaebol (and his totally rotten families)
- Green Mothers Club showed us another Sky-Castle lite
- Thirty Nine, one of the lead also technically cheating ...
- Reflection of You basically showing show from a female antagonist side
- The Third Charm showed us a deeply unlikable couple;
- Life gave us a bunch of hospital-politics obsessed doctors;
- Interest of Love present us with a constantly cheating couple dynamics ...

So yeah, I think politics and dirty characters are the backbone of JTBC show. Most of their leads are painted with more "grey" side of things compared with per see, SBS or TVN shows (although there are also many morally grey SBS/TVN leads)

Having said that, there are many righteous, morally justifiable and happy-go-lucky side of JTBC just as shown in shows like Itaewon Class, Strong Girl Bong-Soon, 18 Again, or Run On.

JTBC is having a great start to the year, with some good dramas and impressive ratings. "Doctor Cha" is strategically scheduled before "Doctor Romantic," ensuring that it maintains its viewership on Saturdays and continues to gain popularity on Sundays.
"The Good Bad Mother" is an ideal midweek drama that will keep audiences engaged.

Speaking of JTBC, somehow I missed it but just read yesterday about JTBC’s upcoming WELCOME TO SAMDALRI with leads Shin Hye-sun and Ji Chang-wook and as a bonus Kim Mi-kyung is in the cast as HYS’s mom. Looks good to me. I will definitely keep an eye out for this one.
Here’s the story. I am a bit late:

Shin Hye-sun has many offers, so I'm kind of worried that she might pass on it. I mean, she can carry a show and this sounds like a story about the male lead.
I think she is fantastic when she is front and center of her own drama.

WTS could be what SUMMER STRIKE wasn’t. A true healing/romantic drama set in a beautiful location with the music as an added bonus.

SBS’s STILL 17 (2018) (Viki US) I would consider a healing drama where both leads were terribly wounded and in need of healing. SHS and Yang Se-jong were great together and I don’t think one outshone the other. Perhaps SHS is looking for a drama where she doesn’t have to carry the whole load and gets to work with JCW 😇.

DR. CHA deserves the love.

For a weekender THE REAL HAS COME! is not doing that well.

Doctor Cha deserves its massive ratings, IMO. We’re, what, halfway through and the show keeps getting better and more engaging. It’s just a fun time.

I’m glad to see Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 is seemingly getting a good reception. I planned on waiting to see the reactions before jumping into the new season and its exciting to hear that it’s even stronger than the previous one.

Man, if I was a PD I would hate to have mg show be scheduled anywhere but a weekend slot. Things are rough out there.

The Good Bad Mother is reviving the Wednesday-Thursday slot, but I'm not optimistic once the drama ends.

Yeah, but there’s a reason why every other channel is ditching that time slot for their dramas. Other than a few exceptions, it’s where dramas go to die.

They got a better female lead for Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938.

A better story too. A shame, really, I actually rather like Jo Boa as an actress, but the role did not play to her strengths. Kim So-yeon is just out of her league - and her character is much more compelling to watch.

I think she's a good actress and a beautiful woman, but for some reason, I've never found her to have romantic chemistry with any of her co-stars. I think she's better suited for non-romantic roles, and hope she gets more of those in the future.

I think Jo Boa plays villains better than most actors I’ve seen in dramaland, but unfortunately well-written and complex female villains are depressingly rare, so she’s out of luck. Not to mention that most of her romantic roles tend to be very male-centric, which doesn’t help.

She delivered a great performance with great chemistry with Ahn Bo Hyun on Military Prosecutor Doberman! Actually I would like to see more of her in badass roles like this.

The Real Has Come is really killing it! Should I add this to my watchlist?

Ugh that rating for Dr Romantic 3 is a bit concerning. I really thought they will pass 15% with ease. Hopefully they can pull 20% off in the next couple of episodes!

As for Good Bad Mother, is it a good JTBC or bad JTBC?

Watching both My Perfect Stranger and The Good Bad Mother but I am honestly only enjoying My Perfect Stranger. Currently on the middle of episode 2 and it seems like a task. But I was told to watch it until episode 4 so I will
