I worried for nothing. This couple stays open and Yeondoo tells Taekyung about the apartment straight away.

Another couple which stays open is Hyung and Soojeong and their sharing of the arguments about adoption and sperm-donation was well done. They do need to think carefully about their options and what each of them wants and is OK with before making a responsible decision.

Joonha is shaking the things up, mainly Sejin for now, and his remark towards her was spot on:
What kind of life did you lead to get someone send such a message?

With episode 24 our leads actually slept in the same bed- intentionally. That was progress but not as much as seeing Grandma stick up for our FL. Our 2ML seems to have decided that he is more offended by our ML than by Se-jin, who dumped him- I still find him too one dimensional to even have any idea about him other than that he is up to no good.

Meanwhile we all had the pleasure of seeing Se-jin tossed about like a cork on the high seas during a hurricane: She has clearly lost control of the situation and all I can say is that this is what inevitably happens when you allow an obsession to take over.

But perhaps the biggest surprise was watching our FL and her oldest sister-in-law crying in each other's arms. Who expected that one? Our Cliffhanger of the week (I am coming to expect them): Just as our ML is about to tell the FL who was just one the phone there he is standing there as the elevator doors open.

Question: Has Uncle’s budding romance crashed and burned?

Also now that we are almost at the halfway point what is happening with Macknae and our young father? All we got was Macknae's admission that she had been interested in him before she found out he really was a father and her declaration that she had no intention of marrying and having a child. I would treat this as a challenge to FL's younger brother but he still calls her a lunatic.

Maknae and Dong-wook need more screen time... Their story's getting really good. I wonder how Maknae's statement (she's not romantically interested in a parent) would affect her relationship with Dong-wook and Soo-gyeom. I hope she doesn't shift into a "strictly business" mode like how Tae-kyung was at the beginning. Yoo-myung is the one character I don't mind being very nosy.

This is by far the best weekend since the confession. All plot lines are starting to ramp up. The only one lagging behind is Joon-ha's but only because he came in late.

The plot line I'm most pleasantly surprised with is definitely Se-jin's. I usually don't mind antagonists getting a lot of time at the beginning as long as it's to showcase how formidable they could be, but hers was a bit disproportionately huge to the point of being annoying. Now finally the drama seems to clarify that her story isn't much about being an enemy to the leads, and more about how her father will try to fix the dysfunction in his family. She's the most layered character in the drama IMO and I'm genuinely curious how someone as broken as her could heal.

Meanwhile, even though we're eating good on more YD-TK moments, Yeon-doo and Soo-jung confiding on each other was the highlight of the weekend. It's nice for YD to finally have a breakthrough on someone in the family without any secrets or competition involved--just a classic "I feel your pain" moment. I'm also betting the drama will capitalize on Tae-kyung and Hyun-woo's dynamic to get their wives into good terms.

YD's mom potentially having a crush on SJ's dad was a surprise. Not that we didn't see it coming, it's just that it was so obvious I couldn't believe they really went for it! YD and SJ becoming sisters? That's gonna be a veeeeeeery interesting situation, although I'm sure YD's warm personality will just melt SJ's ice cold heart.

Speaking of ice cold, Dong-wook and Yoo-myung's plot line is starting to feel glacial. The setup for their story is great and warrants some more screen time, not to mention Soo-gyeom is such a delightful presence to our characters every time. I hope they show more of them in the coming weeks.

I actually watched the press conference that you sent me the link to and was struck by the excitement shown by the participation of the actress who plays Se-jin. Apparently, she was a significant part of the success of THE GLORY. She is really very good and there is little doubt that her character is indeed a very layered one which is in sharp contrast to Joon-ha.

Required fields are marked *

Yes! I'm happy you managed to power through that long press con as it contained good insights about the drama. Se-jin's actor Cha Joo-young's participation in this drama was actually a surprise for me, as she surely had a significant increase in stock price because of THE GLORY so I was expecting her to take on big time projects after that.

Not complaining though--she's great for layered, highly afflicted characters. I remember her character in the rom-com JUGGLERS as the best friend of the female lead (who was also played by Yeon-doo's actor Baek Jin-hee). While she loved her best friend, she deeply envied her too and was in a situation where backstabbing would help her succeed, and her performance really showed that internal conflict.

Well, I just finished with EP24, and it is definitely amping up!

Part of the reason it took so long for me to finish the episode were the high tensions, I found I had to keep pausing to settle back down.

I'm loving getting to see TK and YD really feel more like a happy couple, and YD is doing a great job of easing into being more and more sweet with TK in a way that doesn't feel too sudden.

However one point of concern of mine, is the communication.

One of my favorite things about this show is the communication the two leads have with each other. I sincerely want that to continue, even if they pursue a relationship, as taking that away now would only feel frustrating, make them less in sync/ lovable as a couple, and just a tool to make drama.

So imagine my growing dread when TK kept hiding the phone calls/ presence of YD's ex. While I know he was just trying to protect her from stress etc, she needs to know.
I was really relieved when in the elevator he started to tell her, but I'm worried that things will continue down this path. I'm wildly serious about hoping that it is not the case and they can only continue to be closer and weathering the storms around them better.

It's nice to see YD slowly making her way into the family, and I feel like the writers are doing it in a believable way. Though I do love how on the nose with her call outs she is.

2ML and Se Jin are starting to turn their attention more toward one another, woot. It's really interesting getting to see her get flustered and backed into a corner. Also going to be interesting how he will face some measure of comeuppance. Ideally the two just embroil each other and that's it-- but that would be too easy, wouldn't it?

Beautiful scene with YD's mom and the principal talking about their kids. Really well written, and I like how it also paralelled principal's ex-wife missing him, to YD's mom right out the gate being moved by the small ways he helps around the house. Wondering if we'll get a bit more back story on YD's father (did they say he died...? If so, I wonder if that's true or if there is some dramatic secret about him abandoning them).

Gong Ji-meyoung's growth and maturiy arc cannot come fast enough. She's just unpleasant in *every* scene with no redemable parts right now. I was actually starting to feel let down when it started to look like the husband and her were working their way to better terms as I feel like he deserves someone kind like the pharmacist.

Anyhow.

Those are my thoughts! Now we patiently wait for the next installment.

I remember in an early episode JH said about YD that she did take long time getting to second base, so seems like she is a person that need time to be comfortable with physical intimacy. Also consider JH temperament he probably was forceful too based on this comment so no wonder she is careful now. So I am glad TK respect her boundary.

A random comment. The apartment Kim Joon Na got has got the ugliest couch. I didn’t like The fabric, color, patterns, embellishments everything. It just didn’t belong in that apartment.

finally OTP moments. And they slept in the same bed!! Progress!! As much as I love Yeon Do being a practical and pragmatic person I want to see a bit more of her soft romantic side. I am surprised it’s TK who is doing the swoony silly stuff being in love. I would have never guessed based on his character introduction.

I still don’t care of the 2ML/2FL. Se Jin called him a

I’ve been traveling, just got the chance to see episodes 23-24.
I know he’s the villain, but I kinda like joon ha. Doesn’t hurt that he is handsome, I guess. Does that make me superficial? Haha. I guess.
Tae Gyong and Yoon Doo were so cute this week, though they were a little nauseating at the breakfast table. Hahah. However, I like how there is no artifice or secrets between them. So far.
In episode 24 it is Soo Jeong that was called out by Yeon Doo. So gratifying to watch. I like how she doesn’t hold back and says what’s on her mind, but is also so empathetic and won her over quickly.
I just have to ask. Wth is wrong with Ji Myeong? Everything she says to Yeon Doo is so loud, rude and arrogant. Can’t wait to see some karma for her. It is so good to see that she doesn’t intimidate Yeon Doo

Ji-myeung is the most capable of TK's siblings but must fight against the favoritism shown to her older brother (who is not actually incompetent but definitely less gifted). She genuinely fears potential competition from her younger brother now that he has a pregnant wife. That she is pregnant as well is a blessing but also something of a barrier as well because it will burden her. TK's pregnant wife is an object of her anger which is really displaced anger at her situation.

I spent the last hour going through this huge thread to try and understand some of the details I must have missed during the initial watch. The hate for JH is understandable, but he's also the one and only character in the drama that doesn't have any history or back-story that explains his motivations. I think the writer still has more to reveal w/r/t Joon Ha. So, i'm glad to find at least one other viewer that also "kinda likes" him. 😊

Ep 23 & 24 thoughts

I’m very late this week, but when better than before the next episodes drop?😁

Principal Jang
I was delighted to see the utter glee on Jang Ho’s face both whilst he watched Bong Nim stomping on blankets, and then as he rolled up his trousers to join her. He’s not without his faults but I have time for him and look forward to seeing him grow as a character. He seems to relish doing the simple things in life (even chores!! I guess it’s all still pretty novel at this stage) and I suspect that’s the sort of familial bliss he has craved as part of living within his means.

I think his character embodies the conflict of wanting to protect one’s child but also prevent harm to others really well. It’s an awful position to be in and every time he lies to protect Se Jin, it hurts. And am I correct in thinking he knows how his family is linked to Yeon Doo and Bong Nim’s? If so, he holds a lot of cards in his hands - he should also be able to recognise Joon Ha as the jerk who pushed him at Se Jin’s wedding. That will be leverage when the time comes to de-fang our SML.

Halmeoni
I also found halmeoni positively adorable as a reluctant kitten under Yeon Doo’s thumb. She’s a changed woman, even though you still get glimpses of her old inferiority-complex-ridden self (election bribery, anyone? Not to mention the cruel comment to Soo Jeong…although she was on the nose about Soo Jeong up until that comment), but I’m glad that for her own sake, she’s getting called out for her unacceptable behaviour now. It means she’ll be less lonely in the long run with actual trustworthy people in her sphere.

Yeon Doo
I think I’ve figured out why I like Yeon Doo so much - both in her scene with Tae Gyeong when he’s being a goof (returning to have his tie fixed), and with her mum and halmeoni (when it comes to the student election), we see how she is not driven by ulterior motives or a desire to advance her position by taking advantage of others. She judges circumstances for herself, doesn’t take sides for her own benefit, but acts according to what she thinks is right, and also won’t suffer fools gladly, even the lovesick types who adore her!🤣

Controversial/unpopular opinions incoming:
Chan Sik (the Gong father)
I think Chan Sik is a good boss. From an employee perspective, it would be unfair to be punished (demoted or fired) without any way to defend yourself against accusations, so I kind of understand why he confronted Se Jin with the letter. However, receiving a letter like that anonymously to your home is just bizarre, so it’s not something you can deal with conventionally. It points to the fact that the sender has a personal connection to the family (which we now know to be true). Chan Sik has hopefully gleaned enough information about Se Jin from more than one source (even discounting the anonymous letter) to be clued in about her true nature. He’s been a bit blinded by his guilt over the failed marriage so I’m glad he made the effort to be straightforward about where he stands with Jang Ho. Another good boss move was when he asked Se Jin for her opinion about working with Joon Ha, but it seems the system is set up for zero dissent, so perhaps it’s a bit pointless in practice. I’m going to trust that he’s a successful and fair businessman for a reason, so he can’t (and shouldn’t be, narratively speaking) an idiot when it comes to seeing through people with unsavoury motives. Will he see Joon Ha for who he is before NX Group suffers? (Because Chun Myeong certainly won’t be the one to figure things out first!😂)

Joon Ha
Which brings me to Joon Ha. I kind of like this character because he makes sense to me and has a sort of consistency. He’s still the scummy ex from the first episodes - selfish, egotistical, self-important, and prideful but he’s out about it. I guess I prefer a stab-you-in-the-front sort of character over the stab-you-in-the-back-whilst-pretending-to-be-sugary-sweet character because the former is a bit more honest? He’s playing both (the former in his personal life and the latter in his professional life), so we’ll see how all this ends for him. Will he have a redemption arc?

Se Jin
Meanwhile, Se Jin is like a pinball that defies the laws of physics to me. I have found her incredibly hard to understand. I know OldLawyer has tried to explain her as being all too human but I guess I lack the EQ and compassion to fully understand her at this stage. It seems like she’s being set up for redemption, though, now that Joon Ha is back and messing with her (which I find rather satisfying!). I’d be happy if she and Joon Ha just mutually destruct each other with their scheming and vengeful plans, but I suspect the writer will be more charitable than me.🤭

Tae Gyeong
I’m a bit uncomfortable with how TG fended off Joon Ha’s inquiries in his office. I know he just needed to get rid of JH and that was the best he could do in that moment, but those are a lot of words to take back when the truth comes out.

Sperm donation arc
I found it interesting that both Chan Sik and Soo Jeong have suggested adoption now, and yet Chun Myeong...

3
reply

Required fields are marked *

*The second part of my comment is awaiting moderation, so I hope this third part will show up below it when it is published.🤞*

…and yet Chun Myeong is set on the sperm donation route. I suspect it’s his plan to lie about it to everyone, so that he gets to have a child to secure his place in the family and not have to face questions about fertility. We now know without a doubt that he’s more than cognisant of how TG has been treated by halmeoni for not being related by blood, and despite seeing the injustice of that, simply bows to it.

Lastly, I noticed that one of the running themes is about being looked down upon by others. Halmeoni and Joon Ha are driven by it, and in many ways, Se Jin and Tae Gyeong have been too. Even Yeon Doo gave as good as she got when Soo Jeong was patronising and disguising it as being generous. I wonder what is in store in terms of the messaging around that?

I had the same thought after last weekend. To the extent a character is supported by a loving, noinally stable family, they don't fear being looked down upon like the four you named. Altho we don't know too much about Joon Ha, he seems to be someone who went from, if not "rags", then at least non-rich to VERY rich. Of all the cast members, Jung Eui Jae is my favorite and I hope there is more to his overall story arc than simply Bad Man.

I'm half way through the episode and I love Chairman. He is fair and very observant, he immediately guessed that Joonha was the one who started the fight. It is also clear that he considers Taekyung as his own son. And I like how respectful he is.
(I didn't expect the switch of the actors to bring such an improvement!)

Joonha on the other hand is twisting the truth and has no self-reflection of his own behaviour.

Episode 25 was interesting in part for its apparent departure from logic when dealing with the second male lead. He is shown to be completely self-centered, but his choices do not seem to be even a rational extension of that: Why is he so fixated on TK? Earlier we saw him trying to break into Se-jin's wedding but now he is upset because he thinks TK took Yeondoo away from him? Perhaps he originally thought that he could have both? Is he that infantile? Nothing about him makes any sense to me.

In contrast the dangerous game now being played by TK's pregnant older sister and her husband does logically flow from their past and present, and their characters.

What a change in YD's older sister-in-law from before- she actually confides in her in seeking advice regarding sperm donation and YD has given her good advice.

Sadly, all we got for the story of Macknae and the Young Father was a handshake. They will work together for the sake of Soogyeum. That is progress but that is about all you can say at this point. It is probably even significant progress that sets up their story for the second half of the drama, which begins today.

Was I the only one who was disappointed to see TK once again sleeping in the chair in the study? YD needs to put her foot down about this and make sure he gets a decent night's sleep.

I think the fact that both women (his gf and his other gf) went to the same man, who he can see is a much better person - well educated, well mannered, from a rich family etc etc.
I think he wouldn't have cared if YD was still single or with any other man who he thinks is beneath him.
In his convoluted mind, he probably thinks TK stole both his women.
Obviously, he is not self aware enough to know he is an ass.

With episode 26 we started the second half of this weekender with a laugh as our to leads help themselves to the most expensive meal on the menu at the literal expense of the 2ML: The look on Joon-ha’s face was simply priceless. Our Young father and Macknae are friends now but Maknae has just found out that her beautiful older co-worker would like to date him despite his having a young daughter (this is what you call a perspective changer). TK’s brother and his wife are actively looking into the sperm donor idea. Our second leads went to great lengths to humiliate TK but the net result is to drive our OTP closer together (and the now sleep in the same bed). But this week's cliff-hanger: A co-worker has just confessed to TK’s older (pregnant) sister- right in front of our leads and TK’s mom. Fun times.

They are called 'Family Weekenders' for a reason. That said- while you won't see something risqué it is not that uncommon to see a couple waking up in bed the morning after with the clear understanding that sex has occurred. Is it just me, or is the actress playing Joo Hwa-ja, playing the part waaaaay too dramatically? It is exhausting watching her.

This perplexed me. Ultimately, Joon Ha is an employee. To ask Tae Kyung, who is family, to kneel before him if necessary because they’re afraid of losing him makes zero sense to me. No one is irreplaceable. He cannot possibly be the only guy in the world who can do the job.
Also, I did agree with other beanies who said TK should’ve just told his step father everything. Gong Chan Shik seemed so level headed and wise, he would’ve definitely handled it well. Until he fell for the scam run by Se Jin and Jun Ha and called Tae Kyung immature.

I get you, I think the fact that TK doesn't have stakes in the company makes him a lot easier to treat lightly to his brother.

I also think tha tit's hard for the chairman to give preferential treatment when TK isn't telling him everything, but I understand both sides of their behaviors. Chairman needs reasons, and TK doesn't want YD to be looked at badly in any way like the sweetheart he is.

As for how replacable etc Joon Ha is. Sadly some deals are built around certain people. However, I do think for the grandeur the company was given in our previous understanding, they should start to think about cutting their losses with his diva-esque behavior.

Alright darling beanies. Here is my reaction to this past weekend.

Jumping straight to episode 26 (though I did watch 25)...

Loved. Absolutely Loved. How TK turned the breakfast meeting into his win. I honeslty postponed watching the episode out of pre-emptive frustration with it, but was wonderfully surprised.

TK continues to be really great about communicating, and being straight forward, but I am getting frustrated with YD always pushing him off. At this point it feels as though she is stringing him along even though she did say she'd live fully as his wife for the two months.

I get she is trying to be cautious for her child's sake, and I'm most likely just being impatient as a viewer, but he keeps humbling and baring himself to her and the lack of proper appreciation for these actions or thoughts is starting to irk me.

At the very least, I did love how she went and just devil stared down Joon Ha when TK was apologizing.

Speaking of that meeting, I also appreciated how the brother's face in that scene was like "hey man.. even I think this is getting to be too much" when he looked to Joon-ha.

Now...

The most frustrating point for me right now?

How the **** is no one suspicious of Se Jin right now? Like she shows up with Joon Ha? Makes jibes to TK after Joon Ha mentions someone is questioning his baby? She brings YD into the conversation?

TDEXCFYJBHK

*RAGES*

HOW?! NO ONE?! Not even a suspicious look?! This woman is shady as hell and always has been! TK BARELY STARTED QUESTIONING HER, aaaand YD dismissed it. Like... WOMAN. REALLY?

My only solace was the annoyance on their faces when they saw TK and YD comforting each other. But for me it was offset by my aforementioned irritation about YD being too cold about TK's feelings.

I do understand TK's hesitancy to tell his stepdad about some of the tenuous history with YD as he most likely doesn't want to cast her in ANY vicinity of a bad light, but it should be mentioned as her ex is really displaying some stalker/ predatory tendencies. Safety comes first.

Last but not least. My irritation with how TK handled his brother demanding an apology.

"You want me to apologize to help save the company? Give me stocks/ stakes in it then. You want me to care? You don't get to use me how you please without anything in return."

Just.

*Internal screams*

Well... we shall see how this goes. Definitely feeling grumbly, so we'll see. I feel like they are setting us all up for a fun next episode with the outing. Fingers crossed I'm right!

Love that the couple is still communicating, would just like to see YD meeting TK emotionally on more levels.

Cheers beanies!

In he other hand watching Macknae’s beautiful older co-worker asking her to help her make the moves on our Young Father was immensely satisfying even as we watched Soogyeum doing her first ‘unboxing’ shoot: It is her first step into the world of commerce, and she does well (apparently- that scene was way too short and oversimplified). But, what in the world is Uncle’s first love up to? Episode 27 raised more questions than it answered. For that matter what are our second leads up to? Who cares if they date? I am quite sure that neither of our leads gives the proverbial rodential derriere at this point.

I had thought Uncle’s first love would approach him with a deal to be a sperm donor to help her pay off her debt.

Episode 28 gives us the ultimate ironic twist: Our second leads are now in a “fake relationship”- not because of their performance in front of the leads but because Kim Joon-ha stupidly grabbed Se-jin to prove how macho he is- a move that was witnessed by TK’s older brother and his still childless wife. But perhaps the most poignant moment came when we watched our Young Father having to explain why he cannot date our Macknae or her beautiful older co-worker (after a fun scene with her grabbing his hand and making him run away Ms. Joy). A twenty-five-year-old man should not be having to think like someone thirty years older, but he was all too right to say what he did. It was just too sad. But is it OK if I enjoyed seeing the dangerous game TK’s older (pregnant) sister and her husband continue to play blowing up in his sister’s face? That foolish couple needs to learn a few things.

Next question: Is Uncle being played by his First Love? I did not like what I was seeing.

Obviously, he would have to know- and that is what I was reacting to- that he will be manipulated into donating simply because he is infatuated with her. Weekenders are family shows but quite often end up dealing with serious moral issues, like this one. We know that she feels like she has her back against the wall due to her child's medical issues- but does that mean that she is going to use Uncle as a way of raising cash? This just looks ugly to me. But Grandma trying to force TK to marry Se-jin was every bit as ugly if you think about it.

Grandma forcing TK to marry Se-Jin was both ugly and incomprehensible, since she was apparently the one who split them up when they were teens in the first place. Nothing that Se-jin wants makes sense, but also, nothing that anyone else does to her makes sense either. Why did her dad send an anonymous letter to discredit her? Why did her boss believe the letter when it was so shady? Why would they fire her for going AWOL for a single day after years of putting up with their crap? In another drama, you could make sense out of it by thinking about how mob-like the chaebol families are in dramas. But this family is a one-generation chaebol family with basically one business and a patriarch who just wants everyone to have happy marriages with children. I'm used to much more nefarious chaebols.

At one time, Se-jin's family was very wealthy and enjoyed high status (father was number 1 son in a private education conglomerate - whatever that means). Her motivations are easy (for me) to understand. I don't like what she does, but I understand her.

Re: the anonymous letter. Plot device - pure and simple - it brought SJ and Jh back together.

None of this would work in a 14-16 ep. drama, but it's all required for stretching out the inevitable. Which, I am happy to believe, involves SJ and JH w/a happy ending.

SeJin's outfit at the start of episode 27 was pretty weird. I think wardrobe for this show competes with Crash Course in Romance (LOL) though CCIR is leading by a mile right now

Yeon Doo and Tae Gyoeng are so cute together, but they could become boring pretty soon. There needs to be some heat there for them to stay interesting. Friendly and considerate only goes so far. Joon Ha and Se Jin are more interesting right now than them. Which, it looks like Joon Ha doesnt actually trust Se Jin, considering he isnt telling her everything. He didnt tell her he overheard Yeon Do saying she will live alone.
I dont like the way Ji Myeong talks to people, especially her step mother. Thats why I was so happy when In Ok finally talked to her the way she needed to be talked to, though what she said made no sense. They arent living together as man and wife, so she needs to quit? What?

The actress who plays Se-jin also works a model- she is extremely beautiful (to the point of recently having been cast as a literal Goddess). The bad outfits are intentionally a way of distracting us and making us see the ugliness of her character.

In Ok doesn't approve of the idea of Ji Myeong having an affair, no matter what is going on in her marriage. Also, if the audience can see that those two love each other, and Tae Gyeong even said in an earlier episode that he knows how much they do, why wouldn't Ji Myeong also know it? It's painfully stupid for two people who like each other, and are attracted to each other and are legally married and are having a baby, to tank their marriage anyway. Which they might, because the two people they are attracted to are both great.

I am not the only who has felt a little shortchanged at how little screentime we have been getting for the story of Macknae, Soogyeum and our Young Father. Even in episode twenty-eight we did not get a lot but what we did get was for the first time a rational reason why Gong Yoo-myung might continue to pursue Oh Dong-wook.

As they sat on the bench and talked, he had admitted that she is pretty and gives him butterflies- and then notes that he has nothing and what he does have must to his daughter. She tells him to date her anyway- he is bound to be smitten. His response is light wry smile (because what she said is true)- and then waiving as he walks away.

It may not quite be like Rick telling Ilsa to get on the plane in CASABLANCA but his actions come from the same manly place: A real man never loses sight of reality nor can he be self-centered.

Yoo-myung has never in her life met a man like this- and now that she has how can other men possibly compare? The real has come for her too. He is now desirable for a reason beyond being eye candy.

Whatever the writer does with this story line will now come from a much deeper place. I am curious to see how this really turns out.

Pretty late to these threads, but I last week I realized that I had been watching TRHC at some sort of sky view level (invested in other dramas), so I missed many small clues, hints and several “micro-scenes” that became relevant several weeks later. Due to an injured foot, I am pretty house-bound, so over the last week I: (i) read all 600+ Dramabean comments re: TRHC; (ii) re-watched Episodes 1-10; (iii) read every article I could find around the beginning (March) of the drama; (iv) watched videos/interviews [thanks Seeker's Armguard for link to the 40 minute press conference]; and (v) did a deep dive into my favorite character Kim Joon Ha who, as Old Lawyer stated after the 2nd episode, is THE mystery man with no family, no childhood history, no back-story.
Mid-way through the drama, these are some of my observations:

Cha Joo Young and Jung Eui Jae: Both knew that their characters would be co-equal Most Hated and they are doing a great job with what the writers have given them. I am enjoying the way the director lets them get physically close while bickering and insulting each other. Compare/contrast to our OTP who talk while standing 6 feet apart or a handful of almost brotherly/sisterly hugs.

Love Quadrangle: From the beginning, Old Lawyer understood the purpose of 2ML and also recognized the love quadrangle parallel with “Midsummer Night’s Dream”. If I didn’t believe Se Jin and Joon Ha would have their “happy” ending, I would have dropped long ago because Main Couple bores me to death.

Jang Se Jin: as of Ep. 28, viewers have witnessed not only flashbacks but current scenes of the Gong family’s extraordinary cruelty to her – and verbal abuse can be as traumatizing as physical abuse. It’s amusing how many viewers are willing to accept the revenge story of “Glory” but not Se Jin’s desire for some version of “justice”. At one point, I predicted that Se Jin would be pregnant as well, but it appears that twist will not manifest itself.

The #1 Irredeemable: #1 is Grandmother. That horrible, awful person has lived her life of bitterness and pride for 80 years and it has emotionally scarred many people in her orbit. A miraculous transformation due to the Yeon Do’s support is unbelievably shallow writing. I’ll be happy if her funeral is one of the last episodes.

Finally, Kim Joon Ha: According to one video, I watched (and laboriously translated), Joon-ha’s family “is not known yet. . . .it’s a secret and if [the viewer] watches to the end, [they] will know.” He may be rather one-dimension currently, but that’s beginning to change. At this point (and after re-watching their scenes in early episodes), there is no doubt in my mind that he is TK’s fraternal twin. Don’t ask me how (kidnapped as an infant or believed to be still-born are the classic US soap opera methods), but the clues and hints are all there once viewed collectively. Of...

The events of episodes 29 and 30 have convinced me that there actually could be a redemption arc for our second leads (complete with a happily ever after for them) in part due to the change in the situation occurring at the end of episode 30.

The most hated character in this drama may end up being Uncle's First Love.

Kim Yoon-ha as TK's lost fraternal twin is a fun idea. My reaction is simply: Why not? After all, this writer likes to surprise us.

Episode 29 sets up what will likely be an epic episode 30 for our lead couple. Fireworks are coming and not the good kind. Meanwhile TK's brother and wife were close to absent leaving more time for the story of TK's sisters.

Our proud foolish older sister almost lost everything as their gameplaying exploded but have now survived - although at a considerable sacrifice by the husband. But ending the game does not fix the marriage, so there is more story to come.

Maknae also got more time simply because Soogyeum could not find anyone else to help with her sick father. The upshot is that Maknae and Young Father have both now acknowledged their growing feelings to each other, with the nicest moment in the episode being when Soogyeum's dad is thanking Maknae for liking him even though he has a child. But now we are forced to look at the painful question to come, because of the yet undiscovered fact that they will be in-laws: Can this even be a romance, or will it be nothing more than a flirtation?

I predicted fireworks for episode 30 and we got them.

Episode 30 ended with a very serious cliffhanger: Our FL collapsed by the street- with both of our ML’s there- Kim Yoon-ha having caught her as she fell- TK having run across the street- and a strong hint that she is having a miscarriage after a very angry Chairman has ordered her to leave TK. Making this all the more poignant is that earlier in the episode TK had effectively proposed that they be married for real- and YD had accepted.

Bottom line for our lead couple: Serious angst and pain are on the docket for next week's episodes.

Meanwhile a very angry husband has left TK’s older sister after learning that she had lied to him about how her previous pregnancy ended. Not the smartest decision but this couple does not seem to make smart decisions so maybe this is just par for the course.

TK’s brother actually tried to approach our second male lead about being a sperm donor (actually a pretty good choice for that) but was turned down. Translation: This couple is desperate. Meanwhile our Uncle's First Love is essentially courting brother's wife and I am liking her ever less as we go on. At this rate I may end up hating her even more than Se-jin. Meanwhile my original dislike of TK's family members has abated considerable.

As for the story of Macknae, Soo-gyeum and the Young Father- all we got was a cute scene of Macknae tying the young father's tie to send him off to a job interview. Talk about stringing a story out..... Seriously, this couple (and Soo-gyeum) is not getting the screen time that they deserve.

I too was worried about a possible Truck Of Doom scenario. Silly of me- this writer is not that simple. Instead, we get a plot twist.

If I am worried about anything with our lead couple it is that now we get treated to an idiotic separation. It could happen but this writer does not always take the expected route. So, it might not.

If YD loses the baby, then another one of the effects is to change the calculations of both of our second leads.

Yeon Doo has been pregnant for so long, in my head it’s hard to reconcile that with the fact she isn’t showing at all
JoonHa started off strong and messed with SeJin so well. Now it’s hard to see SeJin in control and ordering/manipulating people again 😒 I enjoy it when SeJin is off balance.
SooGyeom, her dad and Yoo Myeong, on the other hand… such a cute dynamic.
“Is he here to talk about the anonymous post?”. “If you want to find the person who posted, does that mean it’s true?”. None of what SeJin says is appropriate for a secretary. I get that she was almost daughter in law, but I feel like that is more reason why her questions are inappropriate. I was glad to see the chairman stop her though he didn’t owe her even the explanation he gave her.
Much as I love the lead pair, both the characters and the actors, they’ve got to be the most vanilla, boring pair I have ever seen. LOL.
Kang Dae Sang’s first love has been giving me bad vibes from the start. Clearly she is up to no good.
While I can understand Chan Shik’s feelings, he had no business talking to Yeon Doo the way he did. Especially when Tae Gyeong made it clear he had feelings for her and intended to stay in the relationship

It appears that now there will be no reason for Yeon Doo to be showing. Which is why Chan Shik will likely be feeling a whole boatload of guilt. That his oldest DIL recently suffered a miscarriage has to add to his awareness of the situation.

Spot on. this is my first weekender and I have developed a love hate relationship with it for many reasons including what you mentioned. It is unfortunate that the main leads don’t have a strong chemistry as that at least would make them a but more interesting. The haven’t even kissed and it just seems bizarre. At this point, they have to ride it out but this is a critical weakness of this drama. The actor playing TG seems to miss his mark at times. I saw him in one other thing and he was adequate but I don’t think he is a strong actor. I wasn’t familiar with the actor playing YD but she seems mostly adequate too. Among them, the actor playing the haughty grandmother is amazing in depicting both her character’s awfulness and vulnerabilities. I also really like the actor playing TG’s mother. She has portrayed her sympathetic character so adeptly and she is charming to boot.
What I like about this drama includes it addressing a number of problematic cultural behaviours and critiquing them as best as it can. It has social relevance including its concern for the declining birthrate and the obsession with family bloodlines. Given the fact that adoption is still not destigmatised, it’s constructive to use entertainment to create a public discourse about why outdated beliefs and practices need to be jettisoned.

Se Jin is not merely "a secretary". She is Chief of Staff - as in all "staff". Early in the show she read the riot act to the security detail (because they didn't take care of Joon Ha quietly enough, I believe).

She is at the level the Sang Rik in King the Land or Secretary Kim (WWRSK) or any other assorted senior gatekeeper w/in a corporation. The Gong family may look down their noses at her but the staff w/in the company definitely does not.

1
2

Required fields are marked *

Yes, she is addressed as Chief Jang, not Secretary Jang.

Secretary Kim was addressed as "Secretary" but strictly speaking was an Executive Secretary- not quite a corporate officer but only just barely short of that, and, in fact, a member of the Corporation's Management Team, not just earning a boatload of money but receiving stock options, etc. as if she were a Vice President. In emergency situations she was empowered to issue orders in her boss's name when he was not immediately available to be followed by everyone- subject to later revision by the boss, of course.

The two positions are not exactly the same but are very close. Chief Jang supervises the executive staff while Secretary Kim is effectively the right hand of her boss.

Both are in positions of very serious responsibility.

As one who enjoys long weekend dramas, I'm losing patience with this one. Honestly, it's one of the most boring weekend dramas I've seen, so it really needs to pick up the drama/tension. Not even the episode-ending scenes stirs much of a reaction in me. I'm starting to not really care about the main couple, which is probably the ultimate sin for any drama. I get that they are honorable and kind, but it doesn't mean that they have to be boring. They haven't really done anything interesting/dramatic since she broke up the wedding, and nothing really interesting/dangerous has happened to them. That's a lot of episodes of blandness. It's as if the writers thought, "Let's just sort of keep them in limbo for ~20 episodes, and after she loses her baby [which I assume is what we'll see this week] then we'll pick up their story again."

The writer loves a good head fake and the end of episode 30 was just that, as we found out at the beginning of episode 31. But now we see a major change in the intentions of our 2ML (to the point of admitting to himself that he had been a real bastard)- and it is obvious that his goals have changed- which means that he and Se-jin may no longer be entirely on the same page. Our second lead is still a mystery man so even if he is no longer quite the cardboard cut-out that he was before we still do not truly understand him.

Our leads are now committed to a permanent relationship.

Our Macknae is now in open pursuit of our Young Father while Soogyeum is now doing regular broadcasts.

Tk's older sister and his best friend who is her husband continue to mess up.

But maybe TK and his father have finally made peace with each other.

Uncle's First Love continues her nefarious plan...

There are so many storylines in this weekender.

Episode 32 showed us our second leads falling out- such a wonderfully realistic portrait of antagonists, who are shown to be just as changeable, inconsistent and mistake prone as anyone else.

But the writer has just served up a truly interesting backstory for Grandma: She had another child named Strawberry when she was poor- and her mother-in-law literally went behind her back to give Strawberry away as there were too many mouths to feed. The 2 ML’s story has been hidden from us but I am going to go out on a limb and suggest that maybe Mr. Kim Yoon-ha is Strawberry’s son (which would make Real biologically Grandma’s great grandchild). We saw our 2 ML actively trying to protect RD from Se-jin’s plotting- what a turn around.

TK’s older pregnant sister and her husband have begun to reconcile.

Young Father and Macknae are going to date- which means that their crisis lies in a future episode.

But the inevitable crisis for our leads is now truly upon us as the truth about the baby is revealed and the cow byproduct is hitting the rotating blade. Se-jin forced a confession out of YD and disaster is about to unfold. Se-jin’s obsession has led to a result that will do neither her nor anyone else any good.

I am loving my Joon Ha. I think the turning point was when Se Jin called Yeon Do trash ("YD will be treated like the trash that she is" or something like that). He loved YD at one time and he never wanted to hurt her - his revenge was upon TK.

And yes - although two weeks ago I was convinced JH and TK were fraternal twins, I'll agree with you that he is probably Strawberry's son AND raise you one - maybe 1/2 brother to TK. They were born a month apart - just too much coincidence.

If Joon Ha ever visits his mother's columbarium, I wonder if there will be a handkerchief embroidered with strawberries.

Required fields are marked *

For he and TK to also be half-brothers would imply that Strawberry was a man who had children by two women. OK, that is plausible.

I think that it is probably true that Joon-ha did fall in love with YD only to be tempted by the veritable goddess that is Se-jin (Note: The actress playing Se-jin was literally cast as the Goddess Redlin in THE HEAVENLY IDOL). But do not forget that he was enough in love with Se-jin to try to break in to stop her wedding (unnecessarily as YD managed to do it for him). So Joon-ha's heart is certainly not a constant one.

At the very least Joon-ha has become a more complex figure in these last few episodes. He is still a mystery, but he now looks less like a monster and more like a rudderless child who is trying to grow up- but largely failing at it- which is why his emotional decisions reflect a weak character.

w/r/t to the brother possibility, I was thinking that they may have had the same father (unknown person/surname - and apparently dead) - with mothers Strawberry and Mama Lee. But with only 18 episodes to go, that's too complicated to unravel so I'm giving up on the idea.

Admittedly, I thought the same car/clothes/and now hairstyle were intended to hint at something between the two men. Almost all of the other hints and apparently meaningless micro-scenes have meant (or will mean) something - whether it is Ji Myeong seeing JH at Gong headquarters or JH harming seJin's father or SJ holding onto JH's phone - they have a place in the drama.

I dropped Heavenly Idol before Redlin appeared to be truly evil - I might return just to compare notes with SeJin.

I read your article about watching weekend dramas and have a couple of other questions for you about how this drama compares to other family dramas, but I will write them in a new comment below at some point.

So many interesting storylines! It’s amazing that Grandmother is now becoming a sympathetic character. The scene of her lost and crying was very moving. And her genuine emotion towards TK was a great contrast to her previous grudging thanks.

I gained more respect for uncle when he walked out on Hee. It showed he has more self respect than we had been previously shown. I think Hee was surprised by it as well. He’s not quite the stooge she thought. ( Still a disturbing storyline though 😬)

Of the conspirators, Joon Ha appears the most likely have a turn around. He seemed genuinely affected by what YD said to him.
(The theory of him being Strawberry’s child is a good one. I had thought that there’s an outside chance that YD’s mum is Strawberry but I think the JH one is better)

When I saw the comments, I was hopeful that uncle saw through Hee, but it looks like he is still into her and thinks some advice will fix her. Hopefully he catches on quick, but based on what the Fortune teller said, I dont have a lot of hope.
This may be cultural, but I was stumped by Tae Gyeong going on his knees and crying copiously. Granted, they lied, over an extended period of time, but the penance seemed way more than the crime required, IMO.
I have always had a soft spot for JoonHa, LOL, so I was thrilled that he showed remorse and tried to help Yeon Doo

I agree. The styling in this drama is bizarre and I say this even though I’m no fashion maven. Also, what is it with the tucking in jumpers (sweaters) and cardigans in pants? The set design is really low rent at times. And, one last thing. Tk’s adopted family are rich so it is funny how their front yard has that largely dead patch of lawn. You’d think they would think of what the neighbours would say!😂

Old Lawyer: A few questions regarding your experience with weekenders and comparison to TRHC. This is my first weekend “family” (>20 episodes) drama and I’m wondering what I should take note of – and what I should ignore.
1. Apparently Jang Ho (a wealthy only son) loaned money to Father Gong in order to save NX corporation. Jang Ho’s family (or family business?) then went bankrupt. Normally a loan would be repaid. Or, perhaps special stock would be granted. Should the viewer simply accept the “facts” as presented – namely, SeJin was once very wealthy, is now poor and snubbed by the Gong family, therefor that’s her back-story/explanation – nothing more or less. Or might there be more to the story of Jang Ho and Gong Chan Sik?
2. Very small micro-scenes/facts. Will they eventually have significance? Or, simply filler? A couple of examples: (1) Two mentions that Lee In Ok once taught kindergarten. Will this be recalled later? Or, likely unimportant? (2) Joon-ha mentions twice that his mother is dead (no mention of father). Important? or merely confirmation that he "basically an orphan."
3. The drama uses flashbacks sparingly – most of have been of TK and SJ’s teen years and the dysfunctional families they suffered under and help explain some of their current personalities. The Oh family is crazy, but not as dysfunctional. If this was a 14-16 episoder, I’m sure we would get something similar for Joon-ha. So my question is: is a weekender more or less likely to provide those flashback scenes as we get closer to the reveal of Joon-ha’s family secret – what motivates him? Why is he "hungry for love" (according to the actor)? Or, is the “big reveal” likely to be 5 minutes in the last ½ hour of the drama?

Thanks in advance.

You asked some very good questions, and I would first note that there are other Beanies who could provide answers- and they could be different from mind but just as good, maybe even better.

We know that Jang Ho loaned money to save NX Corporation but we do not know that he went bankrupt later because of it. If that had happened there would e a completely different dynamic at play between the families. Almost certainly that loan was repaid and Jang Ho’s business went bankrupt later for a completely different reason. If that had not been true then there is no way that the Gongs could ever snub the Jangs- who would be their mortal enemies.

As for the micro-scenes: This writer loves to plant a seed and harvest it later. Many are indeed significant, but we do not know why until later. We may find out later that it was when In-Ok was a kindergarten teacher when she met TK’s father- who also had a relationship with the now deceased Strawberry (Posited as Joon-ha’s mother in this case) and got both women pregnant. Whether the father abandoned Strawberry or In-Ok (or both) he definitely was never a father to either one in any sense beyond mere biology (please understand that this is speculation) leaving both men scarred but with different reactions. Joon-ha is emotionally immature precisely because he had no masculine role model (again, speculation, but it does conform to his statement that he is largely an orphan). With 18 episodes left there is plenty of time for us to get more information.

The sparing use of flashbacks proves that this writer is very capable. Many different writers have written weekenders and the use of flashbacks varies widely. Might we see a few more? Maybe. The truth is that weekenders very a great deal in style and technique, one from another. For instance, this writer has handed us a boatload of romantic and marital relationships: Chairman and In-Ok, our lead couple, TK’s childless brother and his wife, Tk’s now pregnant older sister and her husband who is also TK’s best friend, Maknae and our Young Father, Jang Ho and his wife plus Uncle and his First Love. If We are sometimes a little exhausted it may be because we are suffering from a surfeit of such relationships, particularly when we add all of the non-romantic relationships like Macknae and little Soo-myeong. We do know that many of the relationships which Yeon-doo has built with her in-laws are about to be put to an extreme test- one that was baked into this story from the very beginning.

Thanks for the substantive reply. I find this show rather exhausting because (1) 50% of the drama revolves around the main couple (that I find bland and uninteresting) and (2) everyone else (except 2nd couple) - and the many relationships you describe get a handful of minutes in each episode.

However, I always enjoy mysteries and there are still a few remaining mysteries and unknown characters that may or not appear in the final episodes. Your observation that the writer does indeed plants seeds to be harvested later gives me reason to continue watching, taking notes and speculating w/other viewers.

Meanwhile, I am grateful there are a few other dramas - both current and on the horizon - to keep me entertained because this one has become a burden - that I cannot turn away from. 😊 Thanks again for your thoughtful response.

I actually agree with you about the fact that the other love/marital relationships get too little time. If the show has a real problem is that there are too many of these: We are suffering from a surfeit of couples.

You may have reached the point where it is best to watch the show when you are folding laundry.

Last post on this hangout: Episode 33.

The entire episode was about our main couple and the fallout from YD's confession. You can understand why TK's mom is the most upset of all: She had genuinely fallen in love with her new daughter-in-law. But there were some interesting developments even within this story. For instance, when Yeondoo returned to the Gong home to face her Mother-in-Law it was actually Grandmother who tipped off her family that she had come. And the episode ended not with a cliffhanger but rather a kiss on the beach. We get more tomorrow- but probably not a full resolution of the problem.

As for our many side couples we got zip.
