Community Bean of Wisdom Alert

Jane Austen’s been coming up a lot. Folks are interested in how they themselves compare to characters, asking which Kdramas have been based on her works, and here, a fantastic, dark take on Elizabeth Bennett.

For me, I’d like to put out there that, should we ever see a Kdrama version of Emma. I’d cast our Won Ji-ahn (In-hae in HeartBeat)…in…a…yeah, heartbeat. She’d tear up the screen with that material, I bet.

I thought Bo-ra! Deborah gave EMMA vibes. I haven’t read the book tho, only watched the most recent film adaptation which I enjoyed

Oh, Emma Woodhouse is so flippin' plucky. I do recommend the actual "words in order" version. I'm not an original text zealot by any means, but Emma is an enjoyable, fast, read.

I love Persuasion the most among Austen's works. I'm wondering which Korean actress would be fit to play Anne? Do you have anyone in mind? :-)

See, the reason this one is hard is that Anne Elliot has "some years" on her. You know, like close to 30. 🙄

Of course (grr), Wentworth is a clear no-brainer to me: Choi Jin-hyuk.

For Anne...OH! I know: Jung So-min.

Jung So-min would be a perfect Anne!!
It’s a shame I haven’t watched anything Choi Jin-hyuk was in. But Wentworth would be easier to pull off than Anne, so maybe my fav actors like Ji Chang-wook or Lee Je-hoon would make a decent Wentworth too haha ☺️

@claire2009do come, come over to the Numbers darksiiide ...come to the OTT amazingly satisfying dramaaaaa...

Choi Jin-hyuk did technically star in Pride and Prejudice. However, nothing Austen about it except the title. Total bait and switch (I watched the first episode without reading about it. :).

@attiton I will, soon 😉

What's weirdly coincidental about this is that I just reread Pride and Prejudice a couple of weeks ago. I have read it about 15 times, but not that recently. The key thing about that book for me, and the reason I liked it so much is not the character of Darcy. The Darcy character seems to be the focus of loose kdrama adaptations. (Although I hesitate to mention its name in comparison to one of the great romance novels of all time, King the Land is the perfect example of this mistaken approach.)

Its Elizabeth that makes Pride and Prejudice--its her reflections, wit, and sensitivity that is the appeal. Also there's a little bit of canard about Elizabeth, that she doesn't change her mind about Darcy until she sees how rich she could be as his wife when she visits Pembroke. In fact, the proposal, the post proposal letter (and her previous unacknowledged attraction to him) was a turning point. Plus, when she sees the estate, what impresses her is the taste of it, the way its designed, that shows not just Darcy's wealth but also his cultivation.

Darcy, by the way, was only a real jerk two times: 1. when at the ball he dissed the local ladies and 2. when he first proposed to Elizabeth and stressed how he was doing so against his better judgement. (Of course, he meant to say that his love was so strong that it overwhelmed other considerations, but boy did it come out badly!) But in kdramas, its continual rudeness that's stressed until love changes the ML.
In other words, I think kdramas have always gotten the balance wrong in echoing this story.

I believe another key component of Elizabeth changing her mind after seeing Pemberley is that she heard from his housekeeper what a wonderful and caring master and brother he is in the eyes of those who work there. She learns that he is also highly regarded in the village. It was never about the grandeur or the money for her in my view although, as she indicates to Jane, it didn’t hurt.

And yes, the book is about Elizabeth and her relationships and how she grows. I’ve always thought a big part of Darcy’s appeal is that he starts as a jerk and is basically straightened out by the heroine. Many a young woman has been wrecked on the rocky shores of “I can fix him” after being inspired by Elizabeth Bennet’s success 😁

My take about Elizabeth is the same as yours.
Regarding Darcy, I'm alway curious which Kdrama male lead would be the closest to Austen's Darcy?! Looking back at the shows I've watched, I think I subconsciously avoided shows with a rude male lead changing thanks to love.

Boys over flowers was a terrible, terrible adaptation of Darcy and Elizabeth.

This character (possessed KTR) could never be an Austen heroine, no matter revisionist. Perhaps Isabella from Northanger Abbey, but even she's too good. We need to be talking Lady MacBeth or The Other Mother (Coraline) level.

The non-possessed KTR could be an Austen heroine. But really, she belongs to Dickens, better yet, Hardy, or best, a really gut-wrenching tragic sageuk.

Am I overthinking this? Yes. 😀 But so darn impressed by her performance in Revenant.

I haven't watched anything KTR's in. I've indeed watched very few compared to a lot of beanies here!! So I had no idea where this screenshot comes from. But I think I agree with you about the vibe KTR gives off.
