Good to see King the land made it to 12% I wonder how high it will go by the time it ends? Will this mean the rom coms coming out later in the year will be able to finally get decent numbers or is it genuinely the pull of the leading man that makes or breaks the rating numbers?

I really hope See you in my 19th life can get double digits before the end of its run it really does deserve it. It is such a shame when great shows don’t make it to at least 10%.

See You In My 19th Life certainly deserves a higher rating!!

I am not watching KTL, but I am guessing the chemistry between the leads is off the charts for dating rumours to circulate. So, it is good that they are having high ratings for their efforts.

Don't dating rumors circulate with pretty much every romcom if both participants are publicly single? That said, in this case the chemistry is strong, but even as someone who enjoys the show and the leads together, I'm still somewhat surprised it has resonated like this so early on. The numbers are really impressive! And although I agree with others that "19th" is the superior drama, its ratings are good, too--they just aren't as amazing as KTL's so it looks like they're not getting the love the deserve.

I would have liked to see "Heartbeat" go up in its second episode as that was stronger than the first, imo (I did like both, though). But if they can hit 5% that would be respectable for a MT timeslot.

The last time dating rumours were this strong was for CLOY and then to quote @reply1988 they got married and have a baby 😂😂

IMO chemistry breaks or makes a drama because KTL script isn't something new, but the ratings speaks for itself.

Although I am watching and enjoying SYIN19th, I am not feeling the romance there. Maybe there is something else that makes the audience feel disconnected or they do not live watch it. I guess both are airing in the same timeslot.

They're actually not airing in the same timeslot but SYIM19L is possibly too...mild for the weekend. I think the SK weekend audience likes larger-than-life, over-the-top stories for which KTL hits the sweet spot.

6

@miso2019 then shouldn't "Numbers" also have better ratings? There is certainly no lack of dramatic or over the top scenes, but then it hardly has any romance.

5

As @laurensophie points out, the numbers for 19th Life aren't bad at all. In fact as someone who hopes that romances remain a prominent part of the kdrama genre mix, I'm happy that combined ratings of King and 19th life are both very good. I agree, though, that even as 19th life adds the element of fantasy/reincarnation which makes it thematically much more interesting, there is very good romantic chemistry between Junho and Yoona that 19th life is lacking. So maybe chemistry is King (of) the Land!

As an aside, I always enjoy the celebrity ritual where inevitable rumors of real life dating from two rom-com stars are accompanied by agency denials that they are just friends. But I've also wondered about it, if I were an agency, anxious to promote further viewership of my actor/client's show, I might actually subtly encourage the rumors, at least for the show's run. But I guess Korean agencies are governed by a strong sense of principals, so honesty comes before promotion and PR!

Thread got too long so I'll reply here 😄 - I think Numbers suffers from subject matter being too complex, not being very gripping as a revenge drama, and some not-so-stellar acting.

5

I think the audience forgets they are actors. If chemistry on screen is all it takes then the couple in Something in the rain were off the scale and they should be the ones married with a baby!

Exactly! But otoh, just maybe they have been a couple for a while and this was all planned or alternatively they transitioned from friends to lovers recently(ish) (the ipad produced ‘livers’. Glad I saw that and corrected it!).

I will await official announcement but whether they are in a real relationship or not doesn’t impact on my enjoyment of the fictional relationship on the show.

5

I wasn’t commenting on the impact on our enjoyment. Just hypothesising. I don’t really care one way or another.

I think there are several small parts of KTL that resonate better culturally with Korean fans, that are quite lost on us as international viewers, hence the ratings (still I'm not dissing the #poweredbyJunho). Sa-rang is a pretty girl with a not-so-good education working in the hospitality industry. She is probably expected to just always say yes and be pretty. Her nickname Cheon Phony is actually pretty spot on. Same goes to her 2 friends who struggle under their respective seniors to meet sales targets or to get incentives. I imagine South Korean workers are familiar with being fake just to survive.

On the other hand See you in my 19th life is pretty much in their own world lol. I expect to grow fonder of it since episode 6 is really good.

I am not sure the Korean/international divide holds up with these two shows. I read that international fans prefer King the Land as well.

I don't get the hype about King Of The Land. Firstly the title sounds like a historical drama about a warring monarch uniting a troubled country and being crowned it's king. Of course it's about a hotel and the VVIP Lounge. After 3 episodes I my impression is that it is just an average drama with average acting and plot. There is nothing new for a blase drama viewer like me to rave about. The beginning of the drama does not inform the viewers the FL's childhood in greater detail for us to understand who she is, her background etc. All we know is she spent parts of her childhood at the King Hotel during her vacation with her mother. Where is her mother now, is she still around? As for the ML, his half sister's animosity and their relationship when we as viewers first saw them together and in later parts of the drama is still to be revealed for surely we will discover in future episodes. The typical cold chaebol father common in Kdramas is there without any back story. The snatches of conversation between father and children are so disjointed and frigid one can hardly view them as being related. I can understand a father who is so busy running a huge organisation and has no time for his family, but not how these 3 members can call themselves a family. No mothers around? No maids in the mansion they call home? Where are the servants that maintain the mansion? This drama is so contrived and illogical.

You're trying to think while watching King The Land. Those things don't go together. The first ep did everything to explain this.

The hype comes from being fluffy, there are not many romcoms doing that these days and many people can ignore all logic in the pursue of fluffiness. I don't understand how they do it but I respect it kkk.

Ah, this settles the matter for me. I hate fluffy, so I guess I will have to give KTL a pass.

2

I don't find any fluffiness in KTL. In comparison Hidden Love is what I would call a fluffy drama, hardly any angst and a palpable romance, swoony and lots of tenderness. One can almost believe the MLs are really a couple IRL.

1

It's an absolute familiar mindless fluff with 2 likable actors.
We need one of those once in a while. Life is hard enough.

See you in my 19th life indeed deserves a better rating, but I have given up a long time ago trying to figure out the SK palate for kdramas. But I am glad Revenant is getting the high rating it deserves.

As I said in another comment, SYIM19L isn't very popular internationally either, so this isn't a Korean vs International audience at all.

I am merely commenting on the ratings in this news item which only reflects SK ratings. I cant comment nor compare international ratings because those are not published numbers in this article. All I know is that 19thlife is also in the top 2 on Netflix in my country so it is popular here too. I cant speak for other countries.

THE REAL HAS COME is drawing steady ratings but not remarkable for a weekender.

KING THE LAND deserves the love and SEE YOU IN MY 19TH LIFE deserves more love.

HEARTBEAT is being carried by Amazon Prime and we have not seen it yet.

King the Land .... practically is all about deep voice of Junho and different expressions of Junho. Cute Junho, angry Junho, romantic Junho, childish Junho, yummy Junho, caring Junho, helpless Junho (peeling onion), Superman Junho ( jmping from cliff and landing perfectly without any rope like hindi films !!!!) , scared Junho, cheeky Junho, handsom Junho and many more to go. Yoona is perfectly blended in his every move and expressions. So rating 12 is off course only due to power of Junho and strong CP.
I didn't find any story in ep 6.
Kim Ga-eun is another expression queen. From 'Because this is my 1st life' to this drama, she never disappoints.
All other weekend dramas are pretty good. Beside King the Land I am rooting for those also. Watched 4 episodes of Numbers ... Liked it very much.

I will respectfully disagree because before this drama, I didn't have a clue as to who/what was a "Junho" or a "Yoona". And I think that goes for most international viewers who simply tune into k-drama for specific genres, not celebrities or idols. My daughter, for example, has only watched Squid Game and All of us Are Dead - two of the highest rated Neflix dramas of all time.

King the Land is now #1 in the Netflix Top 10 Global (Non-English) and it isn't due to Junho, Yoona or any possible romance off-screen. The show is romantic, funny, well-written (consistent) with interesting sub-plots and characters.

Maybe folks, whether Korean or not, just want to be entertained - I know I am.
