Seo Hyun-jin’s fifth husband is Gong Yoo in new romance Trunk

Seo Hyun-jin, Gong Yoo

Netflix confirmed the very exciting news that Seo Hyun-jin (Why Her) and Gong Yoo (The Silent Sea) will be headlining their new romance Trunk. Adapted from a novel by the same title, the original is written by the acclaimed author Kim Ryeo-ryung, who is particularly well known for her early works – Punch and Thread of Lies – that were later made into films.

I initially thought the title was referring to a car trunk, but it sounds like we’re dealing with some kind of luggage trunk that is one day discovered by a lake. Said trunk then becomes our story’s catalyst, unraveling the secrets behind our main pair’s strange marriage as well as the covert operations of the NM company.

This company is where our heroine In-ji (Seo Hyun-jin) is employed. As a premium match-making service, they specialize in finding your perfect soulmate, with just a tiny amendment to the traditional wedding vows. Life is short as it is, so why wait until death do us part when you can sign a one-year contract instead. In-ji, for instance, has already ticked off four marriages on her list of life’s milestones and is now on number five with Jung-won (Gong Yoo).

With any new relationship, though, it takes time to get comfortable with each other and music producer Jung-won has his own emotional baggage to deal with as well. Owing to tragedies in his past, our hero struggles with anxiety and loneliness – in addition to still missing his former wife Seo-yeon. Ironically, Seo-yeon was the one who signed him up with NM, which is where Jung-won first meets In-ji.

Still in the planning stages, Netflix’s Trunk will be directed by PD Kim Kyu-tae (Our Blues, Live) with scripts penned by Park Eun-young (Hwarang).

Thank you so much - I love them!! There are many that stood out to me, but I like “Licking the surface of a watermelon” in particular (Meaning: superficially experiencing something without delving deeper or fully understanding it).

Now I’m curious about why your teacher chose GY’s characters in particular.

Please don’t worry about using your time to type up! I suppose the other part of my curiosity is around which ones stood out for you. I love idioms because they are like little stories that reveal something about a culture, or how people think, and they connect to a frame of reference.

These are amazing!! I’m loving this list. Thanks, @mellowarmadillo, for asking…and thanks @redfox for linking!

My favorite—there are many—but my favorite because it’s the near opposite of English (it would appear) is “twist my arm.” In English it means to be asked to do something that you secretly WANT to do, but according to this page, in Korean, it means to be wheedled into doing something you actually don’t want to do.

I love the casting, I'm skeptical about the plot.

Maybe married couple story will be the new trend. Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won will also star as married couple if I'm not mistaken.

But what’s this plot?? What can you possibly get in one year?

A luggage trunk found in a lake seems like your typical mystery chaebol revenge makjang corruption (anything alongside that kind of stuff) type of story.

It is from an acclaimed novel and the director of OUR BLUES and LIVE, both are spendid works of Noh Hee-Kyung
However, the same PD also created the disastrous MOON LOVERS and the script will be adapted by the writer of equally disastrous HWARANG ....

OMG, not Hwarang, yikes, that drama was so bad, but let's be hopeful.

My thoughts exactly! Hwarang took a (mostly) talented cast and interesting historical context and ruined it with the writing. Please get this one right!

Live, Our Blues and That’s Okay, That’s Love (which also by this director and No Hee Kyung) are my top dramas all the time. The director and Seo Hyun Jin is definitely a collab I have to watch but you are right, Hwarang was disappointing. The excitement for the director and casts is sky to the land compared to the writer.

Noh is the acclaimed writer. He does a decent job when he works with her.

Seo HY is an amazing actress so I’m really looking forward to this one! May it have a better writer than ‘Why her’. Shouldn’t be too hard.

They promise to find your perfect soulmate but none of her 4 one-year trial marriages ended up with renewal? Sounds like money wasted for me)))

Hah, very apt one! I like SHJ, but indifferent to GY, so it's a "wait and see" in my case. Wonder if producers are intended to have some cameo fun with the 4 discarded exes...

“trunk” made me think of a big old fashioned steamer trunk filled with body parts. Or cash? Or classified documents 😏
Wonder what will be inside!

My word association for 'trunk' is 'body' and that's what I'm going to assume is in the trunk until proven otherwise.

I share others' skepticism about the production team but the two leads sound like a dream.

Bruh. Two of my most favorite actors in kdramaland as OTP - where do I sign up? Though the plot seems dubious, I hope it will somehow pleasantly surprise us given that Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin are on board. (But then again, Why Her happened so now I'm not so sure anymore. 😅😥)
