[Drama chat] Things dramas do I *wish* were real life

After a robust and totally entertaining conversation around things dramas do that remind us they are pure fiction, it’s time to ponder those same tropey things… and admit sometimes we wish they were real. This can range from the portrayals of romance and courtship, to the dressing tables replete with expensive skincare, to the fact that no matter how poor you are you always get a fantastic wardrobe.

The thing I always wish was real when I’m watching dramas is their portrayal of hospitals as warm, safe, and free of all the things that actually make hospitals hospitals. Instead, in dramas, they are places where you can stare longingly at your beloved in their cozy bed when they are sick but looking gorgeous, and where no one will enter the room to bother your moment (unless it’s your romantic rival). There are no nurses, doctors, or even pesky monitors around. No germs or bad smells. It’s just you, your love interest, and that delightful mist machine.

What’s one tropey thing dramas do that you wish (secretly or not-so-secretly) was actual reality?

It would make life a lot easier if one's unrequited (first) love from the past (or past life) suddenly comes across your path and falls unconditionally for you, flaws and all.

Don't want to sound like a party pooper, but in my case, it would be 'be careful what you wish for' because one such guy once turned up in my very married, kids-full life and badgered me until I changed my phone number and blocked him everywhere on social media and eventually moved. The worrying thing was he was married too, with a kid, and had found out about me through a friend of a friend of a friend.....very scary stuff.

Thank you Claire.

2

To offer thanks for your gif(t), I present to you
- a quote from Call It Love, and
- a poem in the drama dedicated to Kim Young-kwang.

a. "True lonely people are the ones who can’t even say they’re lonely."

b. "There was a poet who once said the following: That if you want to understand, if you want to forgive, and if you want to love someone, you should observe how they look from the back for a long while. That if you do just that, you don’t have to unnecessarily try to understand, forgive, or love them because their lonely shadow will have made you cry without you even knowing."

4

Thank you @Seeker for the beautiful poem and quote. It made me want to watch that show. I've always liked Lee Sung Kyung.

3

You will call Kim Young-kwang's name after you watch the drama. 😉

2

Nothing like an “are you 18” warning to start your day! 😉

I actually really enjoy most tropes, except, you know, the amnesia, TOD, bitter romantic rivals, etc. So, just as wish-fulfillment hypotheticals, I'd probably be pretty delighted to run across most of the positive tropes in real life, such as the umbrella save or sweeping out of the path of an oncoming bicycle or moped (*swoon*). What I most appreciate in dramas, though, is the confessions that precede asking someone out - just straightforward and honest, "I like you." I like that dramas let you see the world through rose-colored glasses.

I’ve actually had the umbrella save happen to me, tho it wasn’t romantic. Back during my undergrad I waited more than an hour in the library for the rain to stop, getting impatient I resigned myself to getting wet if it meant I could go home. While I made a run for it, a nice lady came to my rescue and shared her umbrella with me. It was super sweet of her. I’ve always wanted to pay it forward but I’m super shy irl 😅

I really like the confessions too. No ambiguity and unquestionably romantic. I'm a sucker for romance which is why I like Kdramas vs the USA show formula of meet jump into bed and wonder if that means they're in a relationship or not. ...except of course if the Kdrama type confession is interrupted by a large white truck.

Had a neighbour like that. Great woman, invited me on her birthday once. We used to have nice conversations, but she would often get tired of the too talkative me (the general pattern with all the older people I have been friends with. They loved me, just not for an extended period of time).

Express the interest and ask the questions. Older folks often have very interesting stories, too much free time and unfortunately, not enough people to talk to.

Time doesn't seem to flow linearly in dramas, like one hour is not always 60 min. A day at work sometimes is very short, but after you get off work, you have time to cook a huge meal and do a lot of other stuff before bedtime. If that was real life, I would end up going to bed at 2am. And when the whole table is waiting for you to go buy some more beers, you wander about the whole neighbourhood getting lost in thoughts, but when you come back, people are still waiting for your beers 😅

Yes. And the way time seems to have no effect on the character’s appearance or well-being - so much happens before work, and a whole day’s worth of activities happen after: a trip to the hospital, a minor scuffle at the police station, a little fun a the do-rae bang, some chicken and beer with your bffs, and there’s still time to lie dreamily on your bed to text your latest crush - are you sleeping?
And then wake up the next day ready to take on zombies.

Clearly I need dramaland supplements and skincare.

Yeah, they could be called vigilantes and criminals but the world sucks and is unfair so it would be nice if there were folks who could balances the scales and help though who can't be helped by normal venues.

Taxi Driver 2 should how someone/people could infiltrate and manipulate the system but overall, that would still be my pick.

I had a found family in my early 20's when I was living alone in a big city without family nearby. I worked for a lady who must have been a general in a previous life. She was really good at finding lost souls and gathering them together. We all ended up staying at her house at one time or another. At the time, I didn't think too much of it. But the older I get, the more I appreciate people like her because it's not easy to be someone like that and it's hard to find someone like that as well.

Have time for the simple things of life. Hangout with friends who share similar timeout activities with you.

Make the process to loving to not be a stress. I'm citing My Liberation Notes as an example to what I'm pointing exactly. Episode 5 where Mr. Gu asks for Mi-jung's number from Mr. Yeom. It was a simple ask. The air was tense asit should, but it wasn't toxic and filled with bad energy. IRL, you can't just approach the family member of someone you're like and ask for thier contact info without meeting some drama and the likes, even when your sincerity is not in doubt. My Liberation Notes made it all so easy and I wish it can be so in real life.

With the US health care system, how much easier and cheaper it is to get health care in kdrama hospitals is enviable. And you get to linger and nap there. Hospices and retirement communities also seem affordable.

Also, being able to just run into your true love and friends all the time. Seems like everyone in the same social circle are on the same schedule and live and work within in a 2 mile radius of each other. Kdrama life seems like the best parts of being on a college campus.

You go to the other side of town...same people. I can't escape any of my mistakes or find any new conversations!!" I shivered.

I totally forgot that the flip side of kdrama heroes or heroines being able to run into friends and romantic interests is also running into their enemies a lot too...so kdrama worlds are so small.

I was born and raised and am still living as a big city person - I do appreciate the anonymity and sense of privacy. No one needs to know it was me that had flung out a sanitary pad onto the table by the cash register at the cafe when I was taking out something else from my bag or the time when I didn't hold the door for someone because I was in a terrible mood.

Okay, being serious, I love to have the MC protection. Even if the main character is being stalked, or if they follow strangers, or if they're in a killer's death note, nothing really happens to them. I want that.

We always know that they won't die, we always know that someone is going to rescue them on time, we always know that things are gonna get better for them at one point. I want it, the main character protection.

The kind-hearted supportive sidekick friend who just wants the best for you and helps you out with everything, giving you a place to stay and helping you meet up with your male lead behind your disapproving mom's back. The supportive friend never covets your hot man for herself, nor does she suddenly turn into the female lead and you find yourself demoted to second lead. Sorry if this sounds a little antsy, but I had the best supportive sidekick friend who ended up becoming a romantic competition, it was a miserable and humbling love triangle. Ah, young love.

OMG, that is the WORST kind of love triangle ever....t-e-r-r-i-b-l-e!!!
Demoted to second lead....sorry, I know it's awful but that cracked me up. I hope you are well and over - you are better off without anyone from that not-so-romantic love triangle.

I don't know if we should get excited about the speed, tho.
Unless it's an alternate universe, this is probably just temporary happiness. 😆

Fingers crossed, first time in weeks I've been able to read and comment here without timing out every other minute!!

I'd like to be able to make sudden u-turns whenever I feel like it. Wouldn't want everyone else doing it, though.

I'd love to be like the average, normal FLs who live ordinary (?) boring (?) lives and suddenly something extraordinary happens: someone you cross puts the Holo glasses into your bag, you inherit a manon with a handsome vampire included for free, you make friends with a time traveler, you are given a cat which turns into a young man...

Apart from that, I would like my hair and face skin to look like theirs in dramas. I can't complain about mine, though. But I wish I had their willpower to do skincare routines...

How about the guy that is sweet and kind and nice and not an a&&hole? When guys complain that we girls should not expect a man like that it makes me sad because men really set the bar low for themselves, don't they?
Can I just be *twirled* at least once? I don't mind being saved every now and then. Umbrella optional.
I would love to be carried piggyback but I think I'm too heavy for that (unless we're talking about The Rock) :(
I would love it if someone's eomma or halmoni invited me in for a meal when I'm sad.

Sadly the only trope I have in my real life is eating at Subway.

I have a completely opposite view of Korean hospitals than @missvictrix . I would constantly worry about being smothered with a pillow, having poison injected into my IV line, having critical life support turned off, or being kidnapped. Even if guards were stationed outside my room to keep me safe, they could easily be fooled into leaving their posts.

When it comes to medical services, I would love to have doctors as caring, patient, and skilled as Kim Sabu or Hospital Playlist’s Fab Five!

kdrama hospitals aren't big on patient confidentiality, either. They'll talk about your brain cancer or early Alzheimer's to anyone who asks.

And it seems that anyone can claim to be a patient’s guardian without having to show any proof.

what I would give if someone gave me shoes!!! not that I cannot afford it but with a size 35 foot they are troublesome to find. sometimes it takes me 3 months of visits to shops. please give me shoes. yes I´ll run but only 8km and back with a round.
