Live Your Own Life: Episodes 8-9 (Drama Highlights)

What’s a weekend drama without the drama? This week’s episodes were quite over the top with screaming matches, hysterical dramatics, punches flying left and right, frustrated drunks acting out — you name it!

Tae-min’s dad, Chairman KANG JIN-BUM (Kim Kyu-cheol) returns home after his stint at the shoeshine shop, and he feels like a brand new character with the actor change. I actually did a double take when he got all violent with the golf club! But Chairman Kang soon returns to status quo, and he reveals his role in Halmeoni’s confinement to Tae-min — who continues to be one of the most interesting characters on the show. Tae-min is stuck between his good conscience and his family’s crazy and power-drunk antics. But not for long. Not with his father’s desperate plea for him to find Halmeoni before she does anything rash, so that they can survive in the company. And definitely not with Sook-hyang’s minion in his ear. Tae-ho also finds out where Halmeoni was confined and it’s bad enough that he doesn’t get to see her because she escaped. But it gets worse when Sook-hyang and her minion bring Tae-min onboard in the towing away of Tae-oh’s dead parents’ car. And this changes everything about the already-precarious relationship between the cousins.

As for the Lee family, we learn that Hyo-shim was a promising athlete, but she had to give up on her Olympics dream to shoulder familial responsibilities. Perhaps, she might not have had to do that if Mom wasn’t so fixated on her runaway husband — to the point of practically ignoring everything and everyone else. Tsk. Hyo-sung continues to get kicked around at work and at home. But he can understand his wife’s frustration stemming from having to give up her job at Taesan Group’s planning department (!) after having their kids. Hyo-do and Tae-hee also continue being a match made in immaturity heaven. As for our study unit couple-to-be, Hyo-joon’s exam prep is not going as smoothly as he’d like, and it must take special skill to be as terrible at acting as aspiring actress JUNG MI-RIM (Nam Bo-ra). In the meantime, I’m loving the cat and dog relationship between Halmeoni and Hoarder Granny at Uicheon Villa. I just have a feeling those two will end up as besties — if Hoarder Granny doesn’t start a pandemic of her own first.

All the positive characters in this show are clueless. HyoShim is clueless about what to do with her life and her family. Ditto for her oldest brother. The wannabe lawyer brother and the wannabe actress next door have no idea what they are doing. HyoDi and TaeHee are lost in their own world. The most clueless of all is TaeHo - both at work and his quest for the truth.

The evil aunt and TaeMin are doing the thinking for everyone. TaeMin's ways may be different from his mother but he feels he knows best and can make decisions for everyone. He is a lot like the HyoSeong's wife in that way.

So, after what happened at the end of Ep 9, I don't see TaeHo continuing to live in the family house. He isn't a strategist, and seems like he will lose a lot before he eventually gets to turn things around.

BTW, HyoSeong gets physically assaulted at work despite being at a reasonably good position, and his wife had to give up on her promising career after becoming a mother. I don't know if this is a true representation of corporate life in South Korea, but if it is then it's no surprise that more and more Koreans are choosing not to have kids.

the conflict between motherhood and career is not unique to Korea but may be at its most extreme there.

It is interesting to note that in Japan one of Prime Minister Kishida's two main goals is fighting the declining birthrate and at the heart of that is the need to make sure that women are able to have children without having to sacrifice their careers: This includes funding childcare at the same rates as Sweden (currently the highest in the world for government assistance in this area) and also enacting tough legal protections for working mothers. This is almost a man bites dog story given that the LDP was traditionally very paternalistic. But it also shows just how serious things have become in many countries, although in fact Korea is actually the worst in terms of low birthrates.

So, what we are seeing may be much truer than we would wish as far as the woman in the workplace in Korea.

On the other hand, I strongly suspect the physical abuse being meted out to Hyo-seong is not at all representative of life in Korea. In fact, in real life Koreans very much avoid such things- it is really something only seen in dramas. In real life a superior kicking someone would be out of a job very quickly. Verbal abuse on the other hand.....

Even in dramas just ask yourself how often you see someone raise their arm to strike another person and seem to start to do so and then suddenly hold up, pulling their punches as it were. That more accurately depicts Korean behavior- or so I have been told, and even that is not that common.

Good to know the physical abuse isn't the norm. Have seen bosses hitting their subordinates in so many Kdramas that it seems like a normal occurrence there.

More power to Korean women. They have it tough, similar to women here in India. But India's population is growing as fast as ever, and women's careers are the least priority of the govt.

I thought I was mistaken when I noticed that aspiring actress Jung Mi-rim can't actually act😅. I had to bottle my observation in cause I like how she dresses up Hyo-joon.

I understand what Hyo-sung's wife had to give up to take care of her family and how hard it must have been for her to give it all up. It doesn't make me calm with regards to the way she acts towards her husband. He dots his i's and crosses his t's in his caring for his family that I don't know if she wants his head on a platter before she knows he is giving his fullest measure.

Tae-min's shirt groomed in that manner as you captured in the screenshot was very relaxing to see. There's always something calming about wearing your shirt sleeves in manner and Tae-min embodies it - he needs some moments of freeing. Too sad that freeing might not have Hyo-shim in the picture. I love this Tae- cousin already even though I know he's not endgame.

Now that you mention it the fact that Hyo-shim's sister-in-law had to sacrifice her career to have children explains why she is pushing her daughter and her son so hard: It is to justify her sacrifice and make it worth the price that she paid.

Ru-bi has only shown a bad side. I hope she has a redemption. Probably too young for a romance . She needs some distraction other than obsessing on study

If the failing actress has some law knowledge, perhaps she’ll form a team with the study obsessed brother .

2

She is the product of her mom's upbringing.

2

I perfectly understand Hyo-sung's wife's projections. Nonetheless, some if not most of her actions are unwarranted, irrespective of the justifications. Putting the rest of the family in the smaller room while their daughter uses the main room; guilting her husband who wants to be filial to his parents; relegating the voices of everyone in the house as secondary, even hers as well. Their daughter's voice comes first. That's no justification at all. A synonym of justifiable is unwarranted. So irrespective of her sacrifices for her family, a large chunk of her actions are unwarranted.
Especially when the said daughter doesn't appreciate her parents sacrifices. Complaining about her parents not sending her to Europe for the holidays🤦🏽‍♂️. Like is she okay at all? Does she hear the arguments her father and mother have because of her? And all she knows how to do is complain about a thing that'll give her a status quo amongst her friends. Perhaps she should just ask to be adopted by any of her friend's parents.

It feels like the writer is taking a very measured pace when it comes to the plot. Most of the characters are still in the downslope of their character arcs — misery for everyone! — even as their connections deepen. I hope this means the writer has a firm grasp on how the 50 episodes will be filled out and there won’t be incoherent plot developments later on just to kill time. (No double amnesia! How about no amnesia at all?)

It was sad watching the cousins’ relationship fracture as the wrecked car was towed away. Was Taemin unaware of how badly Taeho was injured? Did he tacitly allow the beating/interference at the villa?

Second brother finally did something decent in bringing aspiring actress back to her room. Were the pinup-style posters on the walls of her? If so, she has a backstory I’m sure we’ll learn more about. It might explain why she desperately wants to be regarded as a serious actress.

Agree about the pace. The show is taking its time letting us into everyone's heads. And all the characters have their own arc, even HyoSeong's stuck-up daughter and fed-up son. The change will also happen gradually.

Somehow I felt that Mi Ran is a lawyer herself. Or was an academically respected professional. It was hinted earlier that she left a well paying job to pursue her acting dreams. She is staying in a study room instead of the usual places for actors (as HyoJoon commented) maybe because this is where she stayed when she was studying for her previous career.

ONCE AGAIN was and is a great weekender- and at Episode 9 things were definitely still falling apart. This is normal pacing.

Tae-min had no idea that Tae-ho had even found out about the villa when that happened- and may still not know- but may have intervened with instructions to let him in to see that the place was empty.

Towing the wrecked car did indeed seem to fracture their relationship- but Tae-min's family history makes him too sensitive to these things to understand Tae-ho's pain. He may have thought that the continued presence of the wreck was actually making Tae-ho sick- and after growing up watching his dad and grandfather he simply could not stand for that. It was not a logical response to be sure- Tae-min was himself reacting emotionally but he was also willing to take a punch from Tae-ho to do something about it.

As for the pin up posters in our Aspiring Actress's room: They are indeed of her and yes, there has to be a story there or why did Second Brother react as he did when he saw them? It was not just because when Mi-rim is dressed for it she is really hot.

The violence was already baked into the story- and given that the script where Tae-rim recounts his family past it was undoubtedly already written before the new actor joined it probably does not represent a change in direction. Do not forget that it was very early when we had Grandma dreaming about the car wreck where Tae-ho's parent's died, just as an example.

I don't know, I really sometimes got a feeling I was watching a different show... Well, the golf club smashing was ridiculous, especially with the plant hanging on the club afterwards, I had to laugh. But then we got Taeho being beaten and Oppa being kicked... and grandmas quarrelling... it was getting too much for me.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy Tae Min’s dad going postal on his mom. Scenes like that and Hyo Shim beating up her youngest oppa or where she finally figuratively whales on her mom are what keep me tied to this drama. 😂
Tae Min after that though, I seriously felt sorry for him.
Hyo Do wearing maids uniform over his sweats was still not cute enough for me to get over how much his sister is suffering because of him. He is an absolute low life that needs to shape up fast. And the maknae, who we were hoping would help him mature appears to be worse than him.
I enjoyed how direct Hyo Shim was with Tae Min when she asked him why he was calling and texting her. Just loved the communication between them. “Could you and Director Kang tone it down”

Loved how direct and without artifice she was.
It resulted in him sharing his life, and that moment was so perfect, I was about ready to ship them, ngl, until he turned on his cousin. Dick move.

I was thinking the 2 million Hyo Seong offered mom could’ve been used to pay off some of the debt? Why should Hyo Shim bear that burden by herself?
Sorry, in spite of the attempt at redemption, I feel no sympathy for Yang Hee Joo. Not even a tiny teeny bit

What was Tae Ho planning to achieve by going back repeatedly to the villa by himself and yelling? He seriously has no plan for anything and acts very rashly. Had a hard time watching him get beat up though.
I am glad I am not Ruby’s parent. I would’ve been arrested for child abuse by now. Lol
Looks like Tae Min is being manipulated by his mom and her little minions. Hope he wises up soon before his relationship with his cousin is ruined much further. Tae Ho appears to be too hot headed to face up to his evil aunt.

In all fairness Tae-ho does not really know the score yet- and Tae-min has only just found out part of it.

It sounds like their Grandfather may have been more than a little unbalanced while Taemin's father the Chairman is not only an alcoholic but completely off his rocker. Tae-min may literally fear for his cousin's mental health- which is why he had the wrecked car disposed of as something that simply was not good for his cousin's mental health. Tae-min properly sees his cousin at this point as a loose cannon (which is nothing short of a thing of unreasoning deadly danger).

Is Tae-min being manipulated? They are certainly trying but he will chart his own course. Of that I am certain.

Absolutely right, he clearly doesn’t understand the score, which is why he needs to think through his actions. To go back and try to jump over the gate after having been beaten up previously isn’t measured action. Tae-min is also trying to protect the rest of his family and the company as well. He is caught between a rock and a hard place. So there will be times when he may feel forced to take measures that are harmful to his cousin as well.

As for our Maknaes: They are both very immature, even childish and yes younger brother seriously needs to give his sister more thought. They both need to grow up- and the good news is that we are not being given that worn out trope where the smart girl fixes the hopeless (but good looking) guy. Unfortunately, we may get that with our ML and FL.

But maybe we will get something better with our youngsters. They are already communicating with each other and working together more than most of the married characters in this drama. With any luck the writer may give us a story where they learn together and grow up together as a result.

We shall see.

2

Episodes 8 and 9 were an eye opener. The Chairman is not just flawed but deeply disturbed: Evil Aunt taking him to task was enough for him to go berserk and smash up much of the furnishings and according to Tae-min this has happened before. Tae-min hurt his hand keeping his mother from being harmed. Until now Tae-min was kept out of the loop regarding Grandma’s disappearance but thanks to his father’s sudden stupid drunken confession he is now an accomplice. The parallel between Tae-min and Hyo-shim at this moment is quite striking: Both of them are burdened by families that expect them to solve the family’s problems. Tae-min has told Tae-ho that the company is in crisis and now I wonder if he is simply referring to the fact that his father has become the Chairman.

Given his past Tae-min’s attraction to Hyo-shim is actually much more reasonable than we first thought: He needs someone who would be supportive and in truth Hyo-shim fits that bill much more than TV Lady might. For all his wealth Tae-min may have actually had a worse childhood than Hyo-shim, and his father an even worse one still: It is interesting that the nastiest character in this drama is not one of the women but rather the deceased Grandfather who may or may not appear in flashback.

Meanwhile our Aspiring Actress bombed another audition- she was so bad she made a parody of the part- the panel had to try hard not to laugh. Then the next one she was a terrible zombie and got scolded. She and our middle brother may have a lot in common: Perhaps they both need a different profession. Are they destined to be together? Hint: We got the traditional man piggybacking the drunk woman trope in Episode 9.

It turns out that Grandma is a tough customer after all- she had a standoff with the Landlady- and won.

It does seem to me that middle brother actually knows the law backwards and forwards. Truthfully the reason most people fail the Bar Exam is not lack of knowledge but rather the inability to think and write in a coherent and organized fashion while under great pressure. As a professional examination the Bar exam unique in that is far more of a test of character than of knowledge.

But I was struck most of all in these episodes by the sheer stupidity of our ML. Making a literal frontal assault on the villa where Grandma used to be was pointless. It may surprise you that I have zero sympathy for him and am not mad at the security guys who at that point were just doing their jobs. Truthfully at this moment Tae-min looks a lot more worthy of our FL than Tae-ho does. But if Tae-min is going to save the company he will indeed need TV Lady. Tae-min is a truly tragic figure at this moment.

I was first happy that Taeho (as the proclaimed ML) showed some care about Hyoshim, but then we got so little of them and he was so stupid with the frontal gate attack, no wonder if Taemin starts thinking he is mentally unstable. Unit, thanks for the highlights.

A physical week. Tae-Ho goes from a sore back to a pair of beatings.
Hyo-do & Tae-hee are probably making the most progress relationship wise. He had his hand on her shoulder when they were retrieving the car.
Hyo-Shim tells Tae-min off, try’s to set some boundaries, then is kidnapped for lunch.
Send Chairman Kang back to the shoe shop, he’s drunk and swinging a golf club at home.
The Mystery of Mr. Lee. He took a bus trip ?
The casting directors choice of not hiring a younger actress for the flashback scenes of Mrs Lee , really stood out during the flashback of Hyo-shim and her mom at the bus station.
The bickering couple at the gym, they don’t add much to show.

The bickering couple add nothing to the show.

If there has been a sore point for me so far it is precisely the one you pointed out regarding the flashback scenes from the time when Hyo-shim's father left: Yoon Mi-ra, who plays Hyo-shim's mom, will turn 72 years old come this December 18th. She is playing the part of a woman who would be at least five years younger than that and her character would have been likely in her late thirties when Dear Old Dad left. This show has a great PD and child actors were supplied to portray Hyo-shim and her brothers in those scenes. What was the purpose of NOT bringing in a younger (but still somewhat mature) actress to play that role? What really struck me is how, in the last flashback scene you could actually tell that Yoon Mi-ra herself knew that she literally did not belong there and was quite uncomfortable in portraying her 'younger self'. Hypothesis: there was a younger actress lined up who dropped out at the literal last minute.

I know Tae Ho lost more this episode. He did not find his Halmeoni and lost the physical evidence to his parents death. When will he catch a break?
Tae Min stepping closer to the dark side may be attribited to familial obligations, survival or greed. We can just wait and see how far he will go. I find him hard to read at times and I am not sure if thats a good thing.

In a preview article for the drama, the director (producer? writer?) said that the Three Grandmothers would provide comedy with their interactions - I thought it implied that the threesome would eventually become a mutual support group that got into trouble, but perhaps I read too much into it.

But frankly, I think it would be a scream if Grandmother Chaebol got caught up in the craziness with the other two - she's playing the "demanding tenant" right now, but I hope it gradually changes as she learns how the "lower half" lives.

But it cannot be all at once either- or why do we need fifty episodes? A lot of people need to make a lot of changes before the mission is accomplished. This is why it makes sense that we have spent as much time with all those other characters beyond our leads (and even too little time with the 2FL- who at this point is not part of our FL's problems).

This is my first weekend drama. What you said is perfectly understandable. It will definitely take time for Hyo Shim and her family to resolve their issues. Same with Tae Ho and his. I admit it is testing my patience. I have to adjust my expectations when watching this.

The aspiring actress gave laugh as Jang Concubine 😂🤣 and she is pretty. I get it now acting dramatic is easier than acting subtle ha ha

Subtle is an "art", only extremely skilful actors can say something with the words while simultaneously conveying the opposite with their minute actions, expression or just eyes.

I have skipped from Episode 3 to 8 & 9, but from the recaps I have not missed much. It has been more piling on depressing elements on the characters. The whole series is (un)intentionally a mountain of depression (mental, alcoholic, work and family).

HS continues to get beaten down by her family's constant stupidity. It is not a fun watch for her to be buried by the burdens of responsibility when no one around her is accountable for their actions. Grandma chaebol is the only proper "mother figure" in the villa, who stands up for herself against bullying and breach of obligations. (Ironically, Park's young daughter is that way, too.) All of HyoShim’s siblings are trying to escape their mother’s whiny, depressing and bitter personality leaving her the sole caregiver. One can sacrifice so much before calling it quits.

The other parallel is that spoiled brat daughter of Eldest Son will probably turn into irresponsible Tae Hee. And the son who is being pushed around by his unhappy mother is on the road to becoming a weak, timid man like his father. If the lesson is the family environment shapes family members, it is being taught with a ruler to the student’s knuckles.

The new Chairman is an entirely new character: an alcoholic who blames his abusive parent for his trouble. The most troublesome story line is that Tae Min went to prison for financial crimes which should have been a huge hit to the company (guilt by association) but he is welcomed back as a savior because everyone knows he is the fall guy for his parents' wrongdoing. This makes no business sense. Like HyoShim, he has the constant burden of his irresponsible family. That is why he looks towards HS as a kindred spirit. But I did like HS telling TaeMin she has no time for his indirect dating nonsense. I do not think Tae Ho is a strong character or a proper fit for HS. He is impulsive, rude and trapped in the past to see any future. He is starting to come across as a stereotypical privileged Korean man-child.

I still do not know why shows do not have a basic fact checker assigned to scripts. Another blatant false hood is the loan shark stealing HyoDo's luxury vehicle and trying to sell it. The problem is he has no title to sell. The luxury car dealership would have a security interest in the vehicle since HyoDo had no credit history. Under Korean law, a retention of title sale is a sale in which the seller delivers the object to the purchaser but retains ownership over the object until payment for the object is made in full. The agreement will include a special provision that automatically transfers ownership to the purchaser when payment for the object is made in full. Retention of title agreements can be enforced by the seller terminating the sales agreement and demanding return of the object. Retention of title sales are often used in transactions that are paid in installments.

The show has not gotten to the point that viewing is like a dental drill into a cavity,...

but the narrative needs to change - - - show some real change and/or hope for HS.

Well we have been led to believe that the story is about her "independent life". How and when that is achieved during the 50 episodes is what we have to patiently await.

I really appreciate your precise analysis... your dental drill analogy is "painful". Ouch.

At Episode 9 of the wonderful Weekender ONCE AGAIN you could have said the same thing. Things must fall apart first before they can be re-assembled into something better.

You give me hope ... and patience.
After all if she started to live her "independent live" so soon into the drama what will we fill the other episodes with!!

Exactly right and a longer arc what really makes sense dramatically. Something like that does not happen over night.

Your point about the loan shark and the Benz is well taken: He could actually have gone to prison on a felony theft charge if Hyo-do had thought to report him. And equally glaring is the idea that our macknaes could simply sell the car to raise cash: The dealership or more likely the bank it sold the note to has a secured interest in that vehicle: Hyo-do cannot deliver a clear title either but at least for the moment he has legal possession of the vehicle.

I know that Tae-ho is supposed to be the ML in this story, but it is hard to believe it for all the reasons that you mentioned. The parallel situations of Hyo-shim and Tae-min are quite striking even though their problems are different. Although they both have the problem of utterly irresponsible parents even as that irresponsibility takes different forms.

I actually think that there is a major difference between Tae-hee and Hyo-shim's niece: Ru-bi is certainly a selfish demanding brat but she is in fact very motivated and works very hard to achieve the goal set for her by her mother, in part because of her very envy of the Tae-hees of her world. To that goal she is actually very responsible- but in a ruthless fashion that does not count the cost to others. She is definitely warped but it is by ambition. I dislike Ru-bi in part because she is becoming an ambitious monster but, fortunately so lacking in people skills that she may not be able to do much damage. It is difficult to see any way that there could be redemption for her.

The real difference is money. But still, the niece is getting used to having everything she wants so that is why I think they are on parallel tracks.
