Premiere Watch: Castaway Diva

Time slot: Saturday-Sunday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Romance, drama, coming-of-age, music
Episode count: 12

Reasons to watch: Can I get a drumroll, please? One of the most anticipated dramas of 2023 is finally here, and with it we get not only the next collab of writer Park Hye-ryun and PD Oh Chun-hwan (of While You Were Sleeping and Start Up fame), but Park Eun-bin’s first drama since her Daesang. And as if that weren’t enough, we have a healing drama with a female mentor/mentee friendship at its core (with the wonderful Kim Hyo-jin). And as if that weren’t enough, we also have Chae Jong-hyeop (a.k.a. Potato Boy) and Cha Hak-yeon as brothers who take our castaway diva under their wing(s). There is practically no chance on earth that this won’t be a wonderful smash hit, so get ready to press play, everyone!

TL;DR: It. is. finally. here.

I’m totally excited for the reason PEN and CJH are my bias and they are very talented actors and both are main leads (couldn’t ask for more, could I?), also I really like the writer of this drama. Pinocchio is still one of best drama I have ever watched. But I’m also kinda anxious after seeing the long trailer because I’ve seen long lost childhood friend story inside this one (which is the writer’s plot signature) that I hope it won’t feel overused or forced because the writer is really using that childhood fate story in almost every drama of hers. And I saw skeletons being found in the trailer so I suspect there will he sub murder plot in the story which I unexcited for. I just want pure fun drama filled with romance, comedy, friendship and touching moments without dark thing like murder.

I’m 10 minutes in and once again another Kdrama with the most toxic abusive parent.
Every single Kdrama (other than Moving) I’ve watched this year portrays parents in this manner. I’m tired of this trope.

The abusive father's made be contemplate dropping Castaway then and there. Good I stuck around but those inevitable flashbacks have me anxious and wary.

I think the child abuse was just a now typical Kdrama trope to induce childhood trauma. It’s done its job so that should be the end of the child abuse- that’s my hope and prediction. I think it’s just lazy writing. Hopefully, the writer was saving his/her brain cells to develop other parts of the plot.

I find it exceptionally lazy as it has been redone so many times and on this show it's not just one but two characters who are having to suffer the abuse.

@Lostpanda @MrsBuckwheat
I do hope this is the end of the "drama shorthand" for abuse. It is traumatic for us viewers too who have to endure alongwith our leads. Guess this is one trope that needs to be retired asap. 😀
Okay then, looking forward to happiness and healing "all the way through" for PEB and gang.

First impressions:
I didn’t flinch when overpowered folks in Moving beat the living daylights out of each other.
However, it was really hard for me to stomach the violence towards children that started off this show.

None of this matters though. Park Eun Bin shines. It’s only EP1 and we get a few precious minutes of PEB on the screen and that alone was intoxicating. She has a certain unique aura about her that no other actress has.
I have ridiculously high expectations for this stellelar cast and production.

I was amazed to learn CJH has epilepsy, yet still doesn't flinch from from acting - even physical scenes.

Wow, I wonder what sort of epilepsy as those camera flash lights could be hard to handle.

I've been consistently adding Kdramas to my plan-to-watch list, but aside from older dramas I've never seen or dramas I want to rewatch, nothing has actually drawn me back to the Kdrama scene. I'm very hopeful that Castaway Diva will change that. I loved Park Eun Bin in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and this premise sounds so fun and intriguing.

I was looking forward to this so much. And that was an amazing first episode. But color me surprised, it is not PEB I am thinking of right now (she did not have much to do this episode), but of Lee Re and Moon Woo-jin! This is the first time I have seen them, and WOW, those kids can act! This episode was disturbing, but hope for better things.

Moon Woo Jin has been in a few things--The King Eternal Monarch, Beauty Inside (drama)... He's a standout every time! Lee Re was in Hello, Me, and she's a surprisingly excellent match for the child version of Park Eun Bin.

Lee Re stole the entirety of Memories of the Alhambra for me. I have loved her ever since. She is such a little firecracker and I can’t wait to see where her career goes. She has an upcoming drama with Ra Mi-ran that sounds adorable and I am so excited for it!

She doesn’t have a big enough role in Alhambra for me to recommend watching it just for her, sadly. But definitely check out Hello Me!

I was hoping someone would bring that up! she will always be associated with Alhambra for me, she always lit up every scene she was in. I hope she's off to great things 'cause she did so well in this role too.

Lee Re: She does look a lot like a younger PEB, that was one of the things that was surprising. Moon Woo Jin: Ah, that little kid in Beauty inside, almost grown up now! Did not realize, thanks @rlg07!

The first episode was gut-wrenching but really made you root for the characters. The story feels like a fairy tale. I haven't been sucked into a drama like this for a long time.

I just finished the first ep, and Wow. What a strong first episode. This definitely doesn't have the tone I was expecting, but I'm not upset about that at all. I saw other's comments about the abuse, so maybe that made a difference, but I honestly don't think that would have harmed my viewing even if I had gone in not knowing. They made everything work and work really well. Can't wait for more episodes!

I mentioned Beauty and Horror on my Fan Wall post about E1, but I am referring to the beauty and horror of our human nature. This uniquely-human dichotomy is on full display here in the very first episode, and I found it riveting.

I am reminded of a line spoken by Jeff Bridges in the old movie "Starman", when he (as the alien visitor) tells the humans: "Shall I tell you what I admire about you the most? You are at your best when things are the worst." Those two brave kids running away from the island are the epitome of this statement.

Just popping in to say that I absolutely loved the first episode. I know some people feel like the writer of "Start-up" let them down with that drama, but I liked it and saw some of the same narrative strengths in "Diva." The storytelling just got me from start to finish, and the young actors were excellent.

Sorry, I couldn’t watch that child getting beaten up. Why did he need to sacrifice himself like that? It will take a lot to get me to watch this show again

For what it is worth, they don't dwell on the abuse aspect, but move on. The second episode is definitely way brighter. FF the disturbing bits and give it a go, maybe?

I struggled through the CA scenes but wow, this was an amazing first episode, just fantastic writing. It was rather long but I didn't even notice, I was glued to the screen. And can we talk about the acting from the teenage cast? Phenomenal!

The second ep was less fun imo but wow Park Eunbin can sing frfr

Most of us struggled through the "at home" scenes of the two teens. But it was great to persevere.
Hopefully the childhood traumas would not be re-visited extensively, best if they are resolved / shut down off-screen. But then who am I kidding - what is a K-drama without one or both leads with childhood trauma.

Minimal intervention by them will be most appreciated.
You're so correct - they will come when the leads are at their happiest.
Sigh, we know dramaland a bit too well. Still we fell bad or upset when this happens. 😂
